Los Pepes Farm; Indang, Cavite — Stingless bee farming, like any other business, is not for everybody. But if you've lost your livelihood and the opportunity presents itself, you've got to give it a go. That's what happened to Mac Bergonio when he lost his job at sea.
Fast forward to today, Mac raises stingless bees (lukot) and sells different bee products made from honey, pollen and propolis. Some days suck. But in general, the stingless bee farming business is good. It helps him a lot that the beehives are low maintenance. And with the right kind of flowers and trees around his yard that keep the little creatures thriving, keeping up with the bees is made simpler.
Keep watching and enjoy this inspiring story of resilience and hard work.

00:00Hello, OG! I'm Mac Bergogno. Welcome to Los Pepers Farm.
00:05Come, join me in our journey.
00:16I used to be a seaman before I started fishing.
00:21I've been fishing for 8 to 9 years.
00:25One day, I had a problem with my ears so I couldn't go back to fishing.
00:32I went to take care of the buffaloes.
00:35At that time, I wasn't making any money.
00:38My wife introduced me to taking care of the stingless bees.
00:42At Los Pepers Farm, we can see different kinds of plants.
00:46There are chickens and cubs.
00:48Our beloved buffalo, Lucot, is also here.
00:52Because of Lucot, we were able to build our dream house.
00:56It's not finished yet, but we are slowly claiming that the day will come when we will be able to finish it.
01:05I mentioned earlier that Lucot is here in the farm.
01:08It's a kind of native buffalo here in the Philippines and it's a stingless bee.
01:12If you look at it, it's not common to other buffaloes.
01:16Many people think it's a kind of pest.
01:19The buffaloes here in the farm are what we call Lucot.
01:24The scientific name is Tetragonula Viroi and Tetragonula Sapien.
01:29Our term there is sometimes called Mungo-Mungo.
01:32The difference between them and regular buffaloes is that the stingless bees don't have a sting.
01:38They can bite, but they don't sting.
01:40The best thing about them is that they are the ones who can get the nectar or pollen from the flowers.
01:49They are the ones who can get the most nutrients.
01:56When it comes to maintaining them, we don't have to be strict with them because we don't have to take care of them.
02:04Because we don't have to feed them.
02:07All we have to do is give them a nice house.
02:10That's all we have to give them.
02:13We also have to plant different kinds of plants so that they can get forage.
02:24Here are the different types of buffalo houses.
02:27Here in the farm, we have an estimated 200 colonies.
02:31Here in Los Pepes Farm, we don't spend much and we become resourceful.
02:35Like these trees, we got them from the wild.
02:39The one on my left is a bag of recycled materials.
02:43Speaking of recycled materials, we have a chair here that was also used by the Locot family.
02:49It used to be my son's chair.
02:51As you can see, it looks old and dirty.
02:54This serves as protection for his invaders.
02:57If you're curious about what he was looking at in the beginning, here it is.
03:05This is what we call mungo-mungo.
03:08Mungo-mungo because it looks like a mungo seed.
03:13It's not as aggressive compared to the type of plants we grow here in the farm.
03:20This is pollen.
03:22It's placed in a pot called a pollen pot.
03:26Here we are on the other side of the farm where you can see the pyral colonies that came from the wild.
03:32This is what it looks like when we got it from the jungle before we moved it and it looks like this.
03:43We used to experience this before.
03:46We used to get it from the jungle.
03:49I experienced how hard it is to carry the big logs that the Locot family carries.
03:54It was a challenge for me when it rained.
03:56We used to look for pyral colonies in the wild.
03:59It's not easy to get them because they tend to die or they won't continue when we move them to the box.
04:07During the pandemic, I can say that our business got better.
04:11People became health conscious.
04:13That's why our business really boomed.
04:15In fact, because of that, we were able to build a house.
04:19We were able to fulfill our dreams that we didn't have before.
04:24We were able to fulfill our dreams that we didn't have before.
04:29We were able to fulfill our dreams that we didn't have before.
04:34We were able to fulfill our dreams that we didn't have before.
04:38In terms of income, it's not the same.
04:41Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad.
04:44It depends on the buyer and the buyers.
04:46Sometimes, if we're lucky, it can reach six digits.
04:50It's a coincidence that sometimes we don't earn anything.
04:53But all in all, I can say that this is a good business.
04:57We've already visited our farm.
04:59From what we saw, we were able to produce different products.
05:05This is our pollen.
05:07100 grams of this is around P300.
05:11It serves as multivitamins or strengthens our immune system.
05:16Another product that we can get in Lucot is propolis.
05:20We can make massage oil, throat spray, lip balm, mosquito balm, and ointment.
05:27This is our honey.
05:28It's pure.
05:29Let's taste it.
05:34It's sweet and sour.
05:36It's delicious.
05:37For those who want to ask and try our products,
05:40you can look for us and message us on our Facebook page.
05:43Just look for Las Pepes Farm.
05:45I hope you enjoyed and learned a lot while visiting Las Pepes Farm.
