00:00Because I have limited capability and I'm too old to do anything now but this

00:06is something that I can, the small way I can do to pay back to the society.

00:1272 year old retiree Tam Tin Yin, fondly known as Uncle Tam, has been

00:17volunteering at Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Mega for the

00:22past 18 years. Eight months ago this professional engineer began to invent a

00:28series of custom-made apparatus to assist those with disabilities.

00:35Actually I've been thinking to invent things to help the handicapped people

00:41since many years ago, right. I was helping those people, elderly people

00:50living alone. So I designed some gadgets on the emergency switches, putting in

00:57install in the house. So that was about ten years ago I started but I don't

01:03have a opportunity to promote it, right. So I think now is the time when I'm

01:11free now, I will retire so I can bring back all this invention and then I can

01:18help the people. All Uncle Tam's inventions are designed to give the

01:25disabled more freedom of movement, whether it's a hoisting platform to

01:30lift themselves up from a seated position or a tricycle for those who

01:35have no legs. Uncle Tam designs his inventions while his friend helps build

01:41them. The passion is to help people, right. I don't care who but anybody who if I can

01:48help I feel very happy. Anybody need help I will design something.

01:52However the father of three met with some resistance when he presented 19

01:58year old Win Lee with a wheelchair cum bicycle he designed. At first she

02:06looked at the bicycle, she was thinking this is very difficult, right. And then

02:11she was very reluctant. Then I carry this bicycle to the park. I take her to the

02:16park, to the Thessa park and then she enjoy. Then later on she changed her mind,

02:21okay, with this I can follow Uncle Tam go to many places. So she start learning.

02:29Uncle Tam's innovations have gained online attention with many disabled

02:34people reaching out to him for help. After I put on the social media there are

02:40a lot of people come back to me, you know, say Uncle Tam, my son got this problem

02:45you know but different type of problem. Can you help me how to design something,

02:51right. I've got a few people ask me. Ultimately Uncle Tam's goal is to

02:58promote independent living for the disabled. When these children, the

03:03handicapped children, when they reach adulthood they should not stay in the

03:09institute like this anymore because they need to live their own life and we have

03:17to make them independent. What's his advice for others like him who want to

03:23help the disabled? We can come together and we design more things to help the

03:29people and then we form a proper setup to help the public.
