At 84-years-old, William Cashore is the oldest living champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. He won in the competition in 1954.

00:16 And most of the time when I learned the word,
00:18 I would also learn what it meant.
00:20 I would learn the definition.
00:23 My high school classmates called me Speller.
00:26 And I did used to help them with their spelling
00:30 and their written work.
00:32 But they called me Speller.
00:34 Years later, I became one of the people
00:38 who would proofread my colleagues' medical papers
00:42 to make sure that the spelling and the grammar were correct.
00:45 I think the competition is more professional.
00:49 I think there are more kids who have coaches and tutors
00:51 and all.
00:52 And I think it helps a great deal, especially
00:54 with modern English.
