The counting of votes for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 began today at 8 am. All eyes are on whether the exit poll predictions will hold ground and Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comes back to power with a historic third straight term. A party or a coalition needs to win at least 272 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats to be in power at the centre. With one seat, Surat already decided in NDA's kitty unopposed, votes for 542 seats will be counted today. Narendra Modi will be the first Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to win three straight terms, if the NDA emerges victorious under his leadership in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

On exit polls, Congress MP & candidate from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor says, "...Expectations were set on 26th April because once people have cast their votes and the boxes are sealed in the strong room then there is no further room for any argument or debate...There was no cross-voting in the previous elections. We have neither benefited from cross-voting in the past nor do we expect to see any cross-voting this time...We will win on our merit or we will fail but my view is that we are winning..."

00:00Settle down in front of the TV and watch like all the rest of you.
00:03Were there expectations on the founding day?
00:06Yeah, I have no doubt. The expectations were set on the 26th of April, not today.
00:10Because the fact is that once people have cast their votes and the boxes are sealed in the strong rooms,
00:15there is frankly no further room for any argument or debate, right? I mean, this has happened, it's happened.
00:20So people have voted. All we have been doing is waiting six weeks to find out how they voted then.
00:25So whatever has been said since then, including the exit polls, can have no bearing on the outcome
00:30because the outcome was established on the 26th of April.
00:33There is always an analysis that cross-voting helped you in the previous elections.
00:38No, no. I definitely do not buy that theory. I know for a fact that there was no cross-voting in the last election.
00:46Mr. Diwakaran had a very, very strong belief that he was going to do well and I think the left rallied behind him very solidly.
00:54I don't think there was any cross-voting at all. In any case, neither have we benefited from cross-voting in the past,
01:01nor did we expect to see any cross-voting this time. We will win on our own merits or we will fail.
01:06But my own view is we are winning.
01:08So are you concerned about the majority that they are going to represent?
01:10How does it matter? How does it matter? I have served in Parliament twice with a 1 lakh majority and once with a 15,700 majority.
01:17It made no difference. Once you are there, you have earned the right to represent your people.
01:22And as far as they are concerned, whether you go there with a 10 vote majority or a 10,000 vote majority or a lakh majority,
01:27you are still their representative. And I have always taken the view that once I have been elected,
01:32I am the representative of all, whether they voted for me or not. And I will work in that same spirit in future.
