00:00 European elections are just around the corner and millions are getting ready to vote.
00:06 Among them, islanders in Greece.
00:09 In the island of Mylos, locals say that not many people really care about the elections
00:15 because they are not aware of how it can impact their daily life.
00:19 People are not concerned about the elections because they don't understand what they mean.
00:26 They don't understand that most of the decisions are made by the EU and concern all member states.
00:37 So, they don't think that it is important to participate or to be represented.
00:46 Voters that care are disappointed and they say that the EU must take action to help the islanders.
00:54 The EU can and must do a lot for the islanders.
00:58 I don't mean that it is a must, but we feel disappointed and we feel second-class
01:09 when it comes to our taxes, the transportation costs and the cost of the products and transportation.
01:18 Fishermen worry about the fish and stocks, their livelihood and are asking the EU to take measures.
01:25 There is a problem with the taxation, but they don't take any measures to fix it.
01:37 Farmers, on the other hand, demand action and European policies that will allow them to have profits.
01:44 In the past, we used to plant seeds and we had a lot of land, so we were able to grow them.
01:52 Now, we are reducing the production and we have the plants that grow in the thermos, the stone plants.
01:59 Hope and disappointment. These two feelings express the Greek islanders in the face of the European elections.
02:09 On the one hand, they hope that the EU will help them to overcome their problems, such as the poverty and the difficulties of life on the island.
02:19 On the other hand, they believe that Europe has forgotten them.
02:23 Many even say that they consider them to be second-class citizens.
