00:02 Five people, including two lawyers, have been remanded for three days
00:05 to assist in an investigation into several law firms in Melaka
00:09 that allegedly took RM316,000 in bribes from 2018 to 2022.
00:15 The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the remand order was issued to four men and one woman
00:19 who are lawyers, law firm managers and a bank officer, aged between 37 to 53.
00:25 In a statement, Melaka MACC Director Adi Supian Shafi confirmed that the five suspects
00:29 were detained between 2pm and 4pm yesterday, Pernama reported.
00:33 He said the suspects were believed to have received bribes for referring property buyers to these firms
00:38 to secure documentation to apply for loans.
00:40 Adi said the investigation is being conducted under Section 16AA of the MACC Act 2009.
00:47 If found guilty, the defendants could be fined up to five times the value of the bribe, or RM10,000,
00:53 whichever is higher, and sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
