BUD Club Derry, inspiring youth group for young people with disabilities.
Transcript
00:00Bud Clubs was set up seven years ago and it came from consulting with young people with
00:13disabilities within Arden O'Shea School and what we soon realised is that there was a
00:17lack of or limited youth provisions for young people with disabilities and our complex needs
00:23to engage them.
00:25We decided to set up a youth provision for them.
00:29Over the years Bud has grown from always working from 15 plus until now we actually launched
00:34Bud Juniors as well where we help young people with disabilities aged 11 to 14 can come together
00:39to foster positive relationships, have the opportunity to socialise like everyone else
00:44their same age in a safe and secure environment.
00:59Within Bud Club we offer a variety of services to our members that includes Bud Juniors,
01:18Bud Club, Bud Fitness, our Weekender Club and in addition to that we also offer a body
01:24where we recruit young people of the age of 15 to 18 year olds and train them or put them
01:29through a bespoke training program that includes first aid, disability and equality training,
01:35visual awareness training, body skills and practice and it provides them then with hands
01:41on experience of coming into Bud Club and working as a volunteer or body to a young
01:46person with a disability.
01:49We engage with our young people and consult with them in order to learn about the different
01:53types of activities that they would like to do when accessing our service.
01:57This may include our health and wellbeing program where young people are provided with
02:01a choice in order to express themselves through dance or in order to access a weekly exercise
02:07or book camp class.
02:10Our young people are supported to access mainstream clubs within the city and district so we will
02:15have relationships within Long Tower Youth Club as well as OurSpace, the city centre
02:20youth provider whilst being there is also breaking down barriers for their youth clubs
02:25and promoting inclusion for all.
02:27It's about challenging our young people, challenging them to do better, challenging them to learn,
02:32to stimulate them to make sure that they're getting an enjoyable service when they're
02:36at Bud and to make sure that it's their service, it's their youth club, it's their provision
02:43and that's why we're here to do is to support them in order to live a fulfilled life with
02:49their friends.
