00:00Authorities are now looking for evidence for the alleged activity of China
00:06in the widespread destruction of coral reefs in the West Philippine Sea.
00:09Like in Escoda Shoal, where almost all the corals were killed.
00:14Darlene Cai was there.
00:21Almost 100% of the corals were killed.
00:25And some of the corals were chopped off.
00:29Experts from the University of the Philippines, Escoda Shoal, or Sabina Shoal,
00:35were involved in marine scientific research.
00:37It was done on a Tuesday, even though the China Coast Guard was on alert.
00:41You can see that when they cut off the bottom,
00:43the white, broken corals will come out.
00:46It was said that the cutting was deep, so it was not part of the natural process.
00:51It is possible that they were taken from there to be examined.
00:54It was not done by the PCG. They have been doing it for months.
00:58And we also know that just recently, the Chinese were diving all around Escoda.
01:03So we can sort of infer that they did it.
01:06It is said that additional evidence needs to be found
01:09to say that the Chinese ships were the ones who cut off and destroyed
01:13the marine life in Escoda Shoal and other parts of the West Philippine Sea.
01:18According to Dr. Jonathan Anticamara of UP,
01:21global warming and climate change may be the reason for the widespread death of corals,
01:26but China's activities still have a role to play.
01:29If China continues to block all our activities, research, conservation, management,
01:35then these ecosystems will continue to die.
01:39Supported by maritime law expert Atty. J. Batumbacalang,
01:43the case build-up came to talk about environmental damage.
01:47We should be careful with our evidence.
01:50We should be able to distinguish which is natural and which is artificial.
01:53And Anya, this issue should be brought to the United Nations General Assembly
01:59and United Nations Security Council.
02:01Of course, we know that since China has veto power in the UN Security Council,
02:06it may not move forward.
02:09But the mere fact that you bring the issue to the international community
02:13so that they will know what is happening and what is the truth,
02:16that's already an important step for me.
02:18We are continuing to try to get the statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
02:22The Chinese Embassy still has no answer,
02:25even though they have always insisted that their activities and rights are legal
02:30in the territories that are in our Exclusive Economic Zone.
