Shadow Communication Minister David Coleman on Opposition’s decision to ditch 2030 climate target

The federal Opposition has confirmed it would dump Australia’s 2030 emissions reduction target if elected. It argues the target can't possibly be reached and says it would scrap it while pursuing an energy policy more reliant on gas and nuclear power. Shadow Communications Minister David Coleman spoke with David Speers on Insiders, saying the coalition will release information about its targets closer to the election.

00:00 The 2030 target's not going to be met.
00:04 It's not going to happen.
00:05 And so what Peter Dutton is saying is the truth.
00:10 If you look at the actual emissions under Labor, David,
00:14 they have not declined.
00:16 When the government came to office in June 2022,
00:20 108 million tonnes of emissions in that quarter.
00:24 March 2024, 108 million tonnes of emissions.
00:29 They're not on target to meet this forecast.
00:32 And of course, this is the same guy, Chris Bowen,
00:35 who forecast that electricity prices would come down
00:38 by $275 per family.
00:42 And so we're not going to just blindly accept a forecast.
00:44 That's obviously wrong.
00:45 We will make all of our policies very clear
00:48 in relation to emissions.
00:49 We are absolutely committed to the net zero target by 2050.
00:54 We are absolutely committed to the Paris Agreement.
00:56 But we're not going to maintain a Chris Bowen fantasy
00:59 when it's plainly not going to happen.
01:01 The question on the 2030 target is really one for Chris Bowen.
01:04 He's the one who's parading around a target
01:07 that is not going to happen.
01:09 There have been basically no emissions reductions
01:12 in the two years that Labor has been in office,
01:14 which I would have thought was a pretty pertinent fact
01:17 if we're talking about emissions reductions.
01:19 -All right. I'll move on.
01:20 But just to be clear,
01:21 you reckon you can stay in the Paris Agreement
01:24 maybe without a 2030 target?
01:26 -We're committed to the Paris Agreement.
01:28 We're committed to net zero by 2050,
01:30 and we'll have more to say about targets
01:32 well in advance of the election.
