00:00 Four days of voting across the EU's 27 member states sees major gains for the far right.
00:12 Exit polls show Giorgio Maloney's Brothers of Italy party on track to secure victory
00:16 in the European elections.
00:20 Germany's unpopular governing party sank to feeble results while the far right made gains
00:25 in the vote for the new European Parliament.
00:30 Spain's leading opposition Conservatives pulled ahead of the governing socialists in the European
00:35 Union's Parliament elections.
00:49 Far right parties made major gains in the EU elections on Sunday, dealing stunning defeats
00:54 to two of the bloc's most important leaders, French President Emmanuel Macron and German
00:59 Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
01:02 Overall across the bloc, two mainstream and pro-European groups, the Christian Democrats
01:06 and the Socialists remained the dominant forces.
01:10 The gains of the far right came at the expense of the Greens, who were expected to lose about
01:14 20 seats.
01:18 Let me start by thanking the European voters who have participated in the European Parliamentary
01:26 elections for their trust.
01:29 Today is a good day for the European People's Party.
01:34 We won the European elections.
01:38 We are by far the strongest party.
01:42 We are the anchor of stability.
01:45 And voters recognised our leadership during the last five years.
01:51 Emmanuel Macron's pro-business Renaissance group also lost big.
01:55 It is clear that for us, we are open to a strong cooperation with all democratic forces
02:05 in this Parliament.
02:08 We have said it at the beginning and we continue saying it.
02:14 The four days of voting across the EU's 27 member states is the world's second biggest
02:19 exercise in democracy behind India's elections.
02:28 Giorgia Maloney is on track to become one of the most influential figures in the European
02:33 Union.
02:34 An exit poll released by the Italian national broadcaster Rai shows her Brothers of Italy
02:39 party almost certain to secure victory in the European elections.
02:44 They are currently polling at almost 30%.
02:47 I am proud that this nation is represented in G7 in Europe with the strongest government
02:59 of all.
03:00 This is something that has not happened in the past, it has happened today.
03:10 It is a satisfaction and a great responsibility.
03:11 We must be aware of this responsibility.
03:17 Maloney has been touted as kingmaker as both European Commission President Ursula von der
03:22 Leyen of the centre-right European People's Party and France's far-right Marine Le Pen
03:26 have courted her for support.
03:29 Le Pen needs Maloney to unite the EU's far-right parties.
03:34 In the parliament, they are currently split between Identity and Democracy, which Le Pen's
03:38 national rally is part of, and Maloney's European Conservatives and Reformists.
03:44 Meanwhile von der Leyen needs Maloney's backing to secure her second term as President of
03:49 the European Commission.
03:51 Throughout the campaign, the Commission Chief reiterated her trust in Maloney as a credible
03:55 partner in Brussels.
04:00 Exit polls have Maloney's Brothers of Italy finishing at almost 28%, with the Democratic
04:06 Party coming in second with 23%.
04:10 The populist Five Star Movement is in third place with just over 11%.
04:16 Early results put Brothers of Italy at nearly 30%, confirming Giorgio Maloney's party as
04:23 Italy's leading political force.
04:25 The other main takeaway from these elections is the increased support for Italy's main
04:30 opposition party, the PD party.
04:33 Now if Brothers of Italy's share of vote is going to be validated by official results
04:38 to be announced later on, well this is going to be a significant achievement for Italy's
04:45 Prime Minister, bolstering her leadership both in Italy and within right-wing political
04:50 forces in Europe.
04:52 Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
04:56 Germany's unpopular governing parties sank to feeble results while the far right made
05:05 gains in the vote for the new European Parliament.
05:08 The centre-right union bloc won 30.9% of the vote, though this is underwhelming by its
05:15 historical standards.
05:17 Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrat parties received around 14% of the
05:23 vote, less than they managed in 2019.
05:27 Alternative for Germany won just over 14% of the vote for a third place finish.
05:33 While better than they did in 2019, it's still quite a bit shorter than their poll
05:38 ratings at the beginning of the year.
05:40 It follows the party suffering a string of setbacks, including scandals surrounding two
05:45 of its lead candidates for the European Parliament.
05:48 This European election attracted a record 65% of voters and delivered unsurprising results.
05:58 Whilst the far right party Alternative for Germany managed to make major gains, they
06:03 didn't quite manage to win as high as they had hoped.
06:07 Liv Stroud in Berlin for Euronews.
06:13 Spain's leading opposition Conservatives pulled ahead of the governing Socialists in the European
06:18 Union's Parliament elections, with the far right making significant gains.
06:23 The right-wing Popular Party received around a third of the votes.
06:44 Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's Socialist Party had just over 30% of the vote, which
06:50 was a dip from the last election.
06:52 The results were a significant improvement for Conservatives, who had likened this vote
06:57 to a referendum on Sánchez's administration.
07:00 However, the biggest gains were on the far right.
07:03 The far right Vox party could almost double their MPs after receiving about 10% of the
07:09 vote.
07:10 The Conservative People's Party may have won the European elections here in Spain,
07:14 but if they wanted this election to be some kind of a referendum on Pedro Sánchez's
07:19 government, their victory is not that resounding.
07:22 The Socialist Party has managed to hold ground and keep almost all the support from its electorate.
07:29 We will see in the coming days a battle over the narrative between the Socialist Party
07:33 and the People's Party.
07:35 What will be the impact of this election in the national politics?
07:38 We will have to wait for Pedro Sánchez's next move.
07:41 In Madrid, Jaime Velasquez, Euronews.
07:47 Polish Prime Minister Tusk came out on top as his party beat the far right Law and Justice
07:53 Party in the European elections.
07:56 The elections had largely been framed as a test for Tusk's party, who had only recently
08:02 come out on top in elections.
08:04 The right-wing Populist Law and Justice Party came in second place with a result of 33.9%.
08:11 Tusk aimed to establish himself and his party as a dominant force in Polish politics.
08:17 He framed the vote as a choice between safety in the EU and a risky future outside of it.
08:24 The European elections were also kind of a test for Donald Tusk, who is returning to
08:28 Polish politics from Brussels and the government he is forming.
08:31 The Civic Platform passed this test.
08:34 Tusk's party won the most votes.
08:36 On the other hand, the government coalition parties, the Third Way and the Left, received
08:41 little support, which can be read as a warning sign.
08:45 Also entering the top three was Nationalist Party Confederacja, which will sit in the
08:49 European Parliament for the first time and very likely will threaten the right-wing factions.

09:06 What inspires you?
09:08 Everything.
09:10 There is nothing like before.
09:12 Nothing, absolutely nothing.
09:14 From my own conception as a person to the way of dealing with things,
09:18 I change everything.
09:20 There is nothing like before.
09:22 Eight months ago I was a totally different person.
09:24 I am not me anymore.
09:26 I am another version of me.
09:28 The drastic change that it generates in the person and in their environment.
09:34 It is very different.
09:36 Laura, who is a doctor, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
09:40 She has had three operations, as well as chemo and radiotherapy.
09:44 Meanwhile, at 62, Pedro has survived lung cancer, but he is paying a heavy price for it.
09:50 The consequences of the chemotherapy I had were the broken nails.
09:59 I can't open my bags, I can't open anything.
10:02 I can't feel anything.
10:04 Everything is smooth for me now.
10:06 I always carry my hands as if they were wet.
10:11 I take them out of the shower.
10:13 Then I have burns from the sun.
10:18 Within the European Union project Ulysses,
10:22 researchers are working on a nanoparticle-based treatment.
10:25 So far tested against pancreatic cancer,
10:28 one of the deadliest forms of cancer,
10:30 it is aimed at triggering the rejection of the tumor by the human body
10:34 in a kind of a vaccine effect.
10:36 The idea is to activate the immune system.
10:41 To do this, we will have to introduce specific molecules in the tumor
10:46 that can generate this immune response.
10:51 Crucial for this is the delivery of genetic material to the tumor cells,
10:55 a role played by nanoparticles,
10:57 similar to those used for the COVID-19 vaccines,
11:01 which are being developed in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology
11:04 of the Oncology Institute of Valencia.
11:07 If this vaccine is effective against pancreatic cancer,
11:10 it could open up a new therapeutic opportunity for other types of tumors
11:15 that are also causing mortality and currently have no treatment options.
11:22 If the treatment works,
11:24 it alone would be a milestone for science and research, Lopez Guerrero says.
11:28 And as only the tumor cells would be targeted by the immune response,
11:32 the side effects of current treatments such as chemo and radiotherapy
11:36 would be greatly reduced.
