00:00 You were a recruit that had interest from Washington,
00:02 longstanding interest from Washington,
00:04 going back to the Cailin and Bourdais.
00:06 What would you say was the difference between the two
00:09 staffs?
00:09 And what was it about this staff that
00:11 made you feel confident that, OK,
00:12 I have the interest in the other staff and this staff.
00:15 I love school.
00:15 But I know these guys can also develop me on the field.
00:18 Yeah, so first off, the first thing that really just stood
00:21 out to me so much about the old staff at Washington.
00:23 So the first coach I talked to was Coach Sheridan.
00:26 And he came down there.
00:26 And he was talking to one of my teammates, Alec Marshall,
00:28 because obviously he's the tight end's coach.
00:30 So he wants to get an idea from him.
00:31 But just his attitude and personality
00:33 just immediately just took me by, like, wow,
00:35 this guy is really something.
00:37 And so I went up there, got to talk
00:39 to some of the other coaches up there.
00:41 Really, really liked Coach Schmitt.
00:42 I think he's a great guy.
00:43 And then Coach DeBoer, whether that was watching him
00:46 in the games or being there to witness it myself,
00:48 he's just got this certain aura to him
00:50 that he just gets his guys pumped up.
00:51 And I remember just watching that and being like, man,
00:54 I want to play for a guy like that.
00:55 And so then, obviously, when I saw
00:56 the whole coaching change at DeBoer left for Alabama,
00:58 I was kind of worried at first, because I'm like, OK, well,
01:00 who's going to really fit his shoes
01:02 and really inspire this program and this community
01:05 as did Coach DeBoer and some of the other people there as well?
01:07 And so at first, I was a little bit hesitant
01:09 to start appreciating Coach Schmitt,
01:11 because I'm like, oh, who's this guy?
01:12 What's he going to do?
01:13 And then as I was starting to talk to some of the people
01:15 there, and then obviously my teammate Suwaneh,
01:18 and then getting some opinion from the other players,
01:20 and it really seems that this new group of coaches,
01:23 they're doing a lot more deliberate intent
01:26 to really help these guys, not just on the field,
01:27 but outside of it, whether that's
01:29 improving the nutrition that they've got there,
01:31 whether that's improving the facilities,
01:33 and even just giving more attention to just all
01:35 the players.
01:36 Because it did kind of seem like if you weren't really
01:37 a starter, then you just kind of felt a little bit left out,
01:40 even though there's this really great tight-knit community
01:43 amongst the players.
01:44 And that was a big thing that my dad noticed
01:46 when he was talking to some of the guys.
01:47 They'd been there through almost three different head coaches.
01:50 And so why did they say?
01:51 And for them, it was just that tight-knit kind of culture
01:54 within the players in their locker room
01:56 that I really, really like seeing.
