Hazaribagh, a small town in Jharkhand, is known for its Ramnavami celebrations. This is the city where the first Ramnavami processon was taken out by a few Hindus. However, with the time, it became a matter of political contention. In 1989 for the first time the situation blew out of proportion leading to one of the most heinous riots in the city. Since then the streets of the city witnessed consecutive conflicts during Ramnavami celebrations. But people say the first flag of Ramnavami was designed by a Muslim tailor. Was there a history of communal harmony in Ramnavami in the early days ? What did actually change the situation ? This is the story of Hazaribagh’s Ramanavami, a history through the people’s lens.

00:00The first flag of Ram Navami was made by a Muslim from Pilawal, Hazaribagh.
00:09Later, it became the flag of Ram Navami.
00:13Ram Navami of Hazaribagh has been going on for the last 106 years.
00:19Ram Navami Jalus has been made by 5 people.
00:22Today, lakhs of people participate in this Ram Navami.
00:27But, in a special event, people participated in Ram Navami
00:35to prove their politics and vote.
00:41They misused Ram Navami in their politics.
00:49Hi, we are now at Jama Masjid Road in Hazaribagh.
00:53This is the space over which the battle of Ram Navami is actually dependent.
01:00It was in 1989 when the Hindu and Muslim civil societies came together
01:06and decided that Muslims won't pass through their Muharram procession in the Panchmandir Road
01:12and Hindus would not cross their procession through this Jama Masjid Road.
01:18But certainly, this never happened.
01:21While Muslims say that Muharram procession never crossed Panchmandir Road ever since they clinched the deal.
01:29But in case of Ram Navami procession, we know, we have seen that Jama Masjid Road has become the center of it
01:37and people go through it in numbers.
01:40When Ram Navami passes through Jama Masjid Road,
01:44even today, thousands of Muslims, Sikhs and Christians
01:50welcome this Ram Navami procession with great respect.
01:55In 2023, Hazaribagh again witnessed violence during Ram Navami.
02:02It was near Inderpuri where a Masjid had been allegedly attacked by a violent mob.
02:09They pelted stones, they tried to hit the people inside and there was a chaos.
02:39There were four magistrates and all four of them ran away.
02:42The rioters kept on doing their job and the police kept on watching.
02:47When we got to know about this, we went to the magistrate and asked him
02:52whether he was here on duty.
02:54We asked him what happened and how it happened.
02:56He started shivering with fear and was not in a position to tell us.
02:59We made him sit comfortably and asked him everything.
03:03We saw broken mirrors, the door of the mosque was broken.
03:08We asked him how it happened.
03:11He could not tell us anything.
03:13But we came to know that this was being prepared in advance
03:18to attack this mosque.
03:21When Ram Navami passes through the whole of India,
03:24Ram Navami ends everywhere.
03:26But Hazaribagh's unique Ram Navami ends at Ekadasi.
03:32It ends at Manigarh and Barvi.
03:34Ram Navami does not end here.
03:37Ram Navami starts at 4 in the morning and ends at 12 at night.
03:45For two or three days, the Muslims of Jammu Masjid Road, Khansama Gali,
03:50Malbiya Road and Buchatoli Chowk live a life of captivity.
03:57They are completely captive.
03:59The first thing is that there is a lot of business effect here.
04:02There is a lot of business effect on this road.
04:05On this road, the entry of a big vehicle is closed.
04:09The locals have to travel on foot to get anything.
04:15Because the area we are telling you, Jammu Masjid, Buchatoli, Paschimandir,
04:20the entrance is packed.
04:25We cannot get out of anywhere.
04:27We have been making halayak since 1990.
04:30Before that?
04:31Before that, our father used to make it.
04:34We learned it from him.
04:36You learned it from him?
04:38Yes.
04:39So, you made this flag, your father made it, you are making it.
04:44Your son is also making it.
04:46Yes, my son is also making it.
04:48So, you make this flag of Ram Navami the most?
04:53Yes, we make it the most.
04:55It is not that much.
04:57But there are a few people who do something.
05:02We have been here for 35 years.
05:04This whole area belongs to Hindus.
05:06We live alone.
05:07We work till midnight.
05:09We are not afraid of anyone.
05:12I want to tell you that Ram Navami was a symbol of cultural prosperity yesterday.
05:20It is a symbol of cultural prosperity today.
05:23And it will be a symbol of cultural prosperity tomorrow as well.
