12:05The white sand on the beaches
12:07of the famous Sentosa Island in Singapore
12:09turned black.
12:12That's the result of the oil spill
12:14from the nearby shipping terminal.
12:16A dredger hit an anchored bunker
12:18yesterday afternoon.
12:20The beaches were closed
12:22to be cleaned immediately.
12:23Water activities were also prohibited.
12:28Today, the Chinese began
12:30to arrest the non-Chinese
12:32who entered their so-called territory
12:34in the West Philippine Sea.
12:36At the same time,
12:37the Philippines asked the United Nations
12:39to expand our continental shelf
12:41in the West Philippine Sea.
12:42Jonathan Andal has the story.
12:47Until now,
12:49the Philippine continental shelf
12:51in the West Philippine Sea
12:52is 200 nautical miles
12:54from the coastline.
12:55But now, the government wants
12:57to expand it.
12:58That's why yesterday,
12:59the Philippines registered
13:01to the United Nations Commission
13:03on the Limits of the Continental Shelf
13:05or UNCLCS
13:07its request for entitlement
13:09to the extended continental shelf
13:11in the West Philippine Sea.
13:12The DFA or Department of Foreign Affairs
13:14did not say
13:15how far the extension
13:17that the Philippines wants.
13:18But according to article 76
13:20of the UNCLOS
13:21or United Nations Convention
13:22on the Law of the Sea,
13:24coastal countries like the Philippines
13:26are allowed to expand
13:28their continental shelf
13:29beyond 200 nautical miles.
13:31But it should not exceed
13:33350 nautical miles
13:34from the baseline or coastline.
13:36The DFA said
13:37that this step by the government
13:39is important
13:40to ensure the sovereignty
13:41and maritime jurisdiction
13:42of the Philippines
13:43in the West Philippine Sea.
13:44Especially, the country is holding
13:46the 2016 Arbitration Award
13:49that confirms the right of the Philippines
13:51in the disputed part of the sea.
13:53The government said
13:54that it was done
13:55to ensure the future of the country.
13:57The DFA said
13:58that they have been preparing
13:59this for a decade and a half.
14:01In 2009,
14:02the government said
14:03that it intends
14:04to expand its territory
14:05in the West Philippine Sea.
14:06Today,
14:07it is expected
14:08that China will start
14:09to catch up
14:10to the non-Chinese
14:11who are entering
14:12their so-called territory
14:14in the West Philippine Sea.
14:15But the fishermen in Zambales
14:17even though they are busy,
14:18they are still spreading the news.
14:20The government is watching everyone
14:22because they are waiting.
14:24They are trying to avoid it.
14:27If they can escape,
14:28we are calling
14:29the Portable Radio
14:31so that we can
14:32pass on the information safely.
14:34The President told us
14:36that no fisherman should be affected.
14:41The Philippine Coast Guard
14:43and the Armed Forces of the Philippines,
14:46the Bureau of Fisheries,
14:47we are all working together
14:49to protect all the fishermen.
14:52For GMA Integrated News,
14:54Jonathan Andal,
14:55for 24 Hours.
14:58The Department of Health
14:59continues to monitor
15:00the cases of dengue
15:02that have increased
15:03in some regions.
15:04For Katrina Son,
15:05for 24 Hours.
15:10Now that it's raining,
15:11the poringador
15:12should be more careful
15:14so that his family
15:15won't be flooded by dengue.
15:17Of course, I'm afraid
15:18that I'll die.
15:19There are many people
15:20who die from dengue.
15:21Later on,
15:22I'll die,
15:23my God.
15:24And I'll just pray to God.
15:27Bebyan Baranda
15:29also cleans every day,
15:30especially her neighbors
15:32who had dengue for a year.
15:34First is cleaning.
15:36Second,
15:37the wheels
15:38on the roof of the house
15:39or anywhere around us
15:41where there's water,
15:42we need to remove it.
15:43And let's not get stuck
15:44in water that's polluted.
15:46In different regions,
15:48dengue cases are increasing.
15:50Like in Western Visayas
15:51or Region 6.
15:53According to the Department
15:54of Health Region 6,
15:55there were 61 cases
15:57from May 26 to June 1.
15:59From January to May,
16:01more than 3,000 cases were reported.
16:04Dengue attack rates
16:05in Aklan, Antique,
16:07Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras
16:09increased.
16:10While the dengue clustering
16:12in 23 barangays in the region
16:14increased.
16:16Dengue cases also increased
16:17in Zamboanga Peninsula
16:19according to DOH Region 9.
16:21In one statement,
16:22the DOH said
16:23that they are continuously
16:24monitoring dengue cases
16:26in the country,
16:27especially from the low
16:28levels.
16:29It has already started
16:30to plateau.
16:31Their indication
16:32is an increase
16:33in dengue cases.
16:34According to the DOH,
16:36the number of cases
16:37in the last 3 to 4 weeks
16:39is steady
16:40at more than 5,000.
16:42Dengue cases increased
16:44in Cordillera,
16:46Ilocos,
16:47Zamboanga Peninsula,
16:49Cagayan Valley,
16:50Caraga,
16:51Mimaropa,
16:52and Northern Mindanao.
16:53According to the DOH,
16:54the increase in female Aedes aegypti
16:56has a major effect
16:57on the temperature.
16:59It is one of the species
17:00of plants
17:01with dengue.
17:02Based on studies,
17:03dengue-carrying mosquitoes
17:04breed faster
17:06at a temperature
17:07of 26 to 35 degrees Celsius.
17:10Therefore,
17:11even in Europe,
17:12where the temperature
17:13is expected to rise,
17:14dengue cases increased
17:15to 130 in 2023
17:17compared to 71 cases
17:19in 2022
17:21according to the European
17:22Center for Disease
17:23Prevention and Control.
17:25For Jimmy Integrated News,
17:27Katrina Son,
17:29for Tutok,
17:3024 hours.
17:33Even though the season
17:34is long,
17:35many of our countrymen
17:36have one question.
17:37Why is the weather
17:38still hot?
17:39The explanation
17:40of Pag-Asa
17:41in Tutok
17:42by Niko Wahe.
17:45Since the announcement
17:46of Pag-Asa
17:47on May 29,
17:48when it rained,
17:49many are asking
17:50why is it still hot?
17:53The e-trike driver,
17:54Efren,
17:55even though
17:56the car is open,
17:57the weather
17:58is still hot.
17:59It's still hot,
18:00especially
18:01when we're traveling.
18:02It's still hot
18:03even though
18:04the wind is blowing.
18:05You can't feel the cold.
18:07Even Junjun,
18:08noticed that
18:09his ice candy
18:10is still selling well.
18:12The weather
18:13is still hot.
18:14As you can see,
18:15there are only a few
18:16sellers.
18:17Some are saying
18:18that it's hot
18:19so they need
18:20ice candy
18:21when it's hot.
18:22The explanation
18:23of Pag-Asa,
18:24although it rains
18:25in different parts
18:26of the country,
18:27the wind
18:28that comes in
18:29is weak.
18:30When the season
18:31is long,
18:32you need to have
18:33a trigger.
18:34You need to have
18:35a frontal system
18:36on top
18:37of Taiwan
18:38or if there is
18:39a typhoon
18:40in the east
18:41of the Philippines
18:42to enhance
18:43the southwest
18:44monsoon or
18:45habagat.
18:46If there is
18:47no trigger,
18:48when the
18:49habagat is
18:50weak,
18:51sometimes
18:52the so-called
18:53Easter Leaves
18:54come in.

26:43Ang pampalasang bawang
26:44hindi lang bida sa pusina,
26:46It can also be used at home.
26:49Yes, this is a garlic of a kind.
26:52It was projected by Bernadette Reyes.
26:58In cooking, garlic is a must.
27:01And its peel is just thrown away.
27:04But UP Cebu Fine Arts student, Clint, has a bright idea
27:08for the garlic peel to give a new appeal.
27:11So my thesis, I was tasked to explore on materials
27:17that can potentially be developed into products.
27:20There are a lot of garlic peels at the carbon market of Cebu City.
27:24Garlic peel is rich in fiber.
27:27So I was thinking, maybe I can turn this into sheets.
27:30After a long process, the peeled garlic became like thin paper.
27:36It was first used to make table lamps, tables, and tiles.
27:42But since garlic peel is also like onion peel,
27:45it was discarded to make it stronger.
27:49I had to mix it with 20-25% of avocado in order to stabilize the sheets.
27:56But for Clint, this is not just a thesis project.
28:00According to the 2024 Food Waste Index Report of the UN Environment Programme,
28:05the Philippine household food waste is more than 2.95 million tons per year.
28:10That's why his project is time-consuming.
28:13Not only does it reduce the garbage that is destroyed in the environment,
28:17making home decorations with garlic peels
28:20can also provide livelihood and income.
28:23For GMA Integrated News, Bernadette Reyes,
28:27for 24 Hours.
28:30It's beautiful, right?
28:31Super.
28:32The result is very classic.
28:34That's all the news for this Saturday.
28:36For a bigger mission and wider service to the country, I'm Ivan Meirina.
28:40I'm Connie Sison from GMA Integrated News, the news authority of the Philippines.
28:45We have a newsflash, 24 Hours.
