Amazon's Gurugram Warehouse Ordeal: Long Shifts & Heatwave

Outlook’s Md Asghar Khan spoke with workers at Amazon’s Gurugram warehouse about their conditions. They endure 10-hour shifts with no seating, walk 20 kilometres daily, and face high targets while earning below the minimum wage. Strict monitoring extends even to toilet breaks. Heatwaves exacerbate issues, with indoor temperatures often unsafe. Injuries and illnesses are ignored, and women workers face harsher treatment.

00:31We have to stand up and work.
00:34We don't have chairs or anything in the company.
00:38The target of our work is very high.
00:43We have to process 600 items in an hour.

01:24When it's hot, we have to walk 20 km continuously.
01:39Even if we stop for a minute to drink water,
01:42the P.S. comes from behind and says,
01:44why are you standing? Your idol is coming.
01:46What idol is coming?

01:48There is a time limit between picking up one item and picking up another item.
01:52There is an idol in between.

01:58For example, if a 100-meter item comes from here,
02:01you have to pick it up in 10 seconds.
02:03You have to run and go.
02:04It is not allowed to run.
02:06The idol counts time in between.
02:09Based on this, a feedback is generated at the shift end that
02:13you have kept the idol for 10 hours.
02:16If you go to drink water, it also counts as an idol.
