00:00Starting as a player manager at St John's, we won promotion in my first full season and I'd started to get a wee bit of interest from other clubs and I'd knocked back a couple of opportunities at other clubs.
00:13When Rupert Birtwood de Mateo got the job, I was close to it then, I think, well I thought I was, I got interviewed for it and I think the feeling then was maybe I was still a bit young in my tenure but they still gave it to a younger manager.
00:30But never at any other time, I mean I had eight years in a row, I had four second place finishes at Aberdeen, we qualified for Europe every year, we'd done a lot of good work and every time it'd come up I'd never get an interview or never get asked down.
00:49I've applied for it often enough and I always thought it was going to be a natural situation but you need a lot of things to fall for and sometimes just because you've played for a club it doesn't mean you're the best candidate and the clubs go out and pick the best candidate.
01:05I always thought that when I first started out and things were going quite well for me as a manager that the natural destination for me, the only one that really grabbed me in England was West Brom.
