00:57:59So let's start there.
00:57:59We got some football questions, but let's start with golf.
00:58:03What are we thinking going into this?
00:58:05Are we thinking you're going to win it?
00:58:07Oh, I like, I'd love a guarantee right now,
00:58:09but how is your golf game shaping up for this tournament?
00:58:11Well, unfortunately I can't, I can't give a guarantee.
00:58:15You know, three young kids at the house
00:58:16makes it a little difficult to give a guarantee,
00:58:18but I will say I'm never going into that tournament
00:58:21thinking I'm not going to try to go win it.
00:58:22So I'm going to do everything I can.
00:58:25I got to simulate the house.
00:58:26I'm grinding away on that.
00:58:28I'm getting, sneaking out a few rounds here and there
00:58:30to get prepared, but it's the best week of the year.
00:58:33I'm glad you guys are going.
00:58:34It's something special there in Tahoe.
00:58:36Not only is Tahoe special, obviously,
00:58:38but then you add in the golf tournament,
00:58:40American Century does a great job
00:58:42just hosting a phenomenal event,
00:58:44not only for the celebrities, but for the fans.
00:58:45I mean, there's really no other fan experience
00:58:48like it in my opinion.
00:58:49Yeah, we're, we're so pumped.
00:58:50This is one of those events that we've like circled
00:58:52for many years being like, why aren't we out there?
00:58:55And finally we're going to go out there.
00:58:56So we're pumped.
00:58:57What's your, what's your handicap right now?
00:58:59So I'm a one right now.
00:59:00I started the season as a zero
00:59:02because I usually grinded down to about a zero
00:59:05going into Tahoe.
00:59:07And then I played maybe one round after Tahoe
00:59:09and then it's like, boom, training camp.
00:59:11Don't touch a club for six months.
00:59:12And then I'm like, now I'm like grinding
00:59:15just to kind of bring it back to a zero,
00:59:17but yeah, I'm a one right now.
00:59:18So you actually could win this thing.
00:59:20Who would you say is your biggest competition?
00:59:22So there's like 10 guys probably,
00:59:24maybe a few more that have legitimately
00:59:26have a chance to win it.
00:59:27You know, I think every year it's pretty much Marty Fish,
00:59:32you know, Mark Mulder, Smoltz, you know, Pavelski.
00:59:37I mean, there's, there's, there's more guys,
00:59:38but those are the guys that kind of usually win it
00:59:40or are right there at the end.
00:59:42I mean, obviously Curry won it last year.
00:59:43He won't be there, but, but he's always a guy
00:59:46that's, that's in the top 10.
00:59:47So like I said, there's about 10 to 15 guys or females,
00:59:51you know, on a cup that really have
00:59:53a legitimate chance to win it.
00:59:54So it all depends on how hot of a start you get
00:59:56and then how consistent you can play.
00:59:58Do you have any holes in one?
00:59:59I have zero, wild.
01:00:00I've played a lot of golf in my life.
01:00:02Started when I was like three years old, zero hole in ones.
01:00:04My dad who'd played, started playing
01:00:06when he was like 55 years old
01:00:08and really didn't start playing until he retired last year,
01:00:11like a lot of golf.
01:00:12He already has like three hole in one.
01:00:13So I'm like, what is going on?
01:00:15And he probably averages a hundred, a hundred a round.
01:00:19So it's crazy how that works out, but yeah, hopefully,
01:00:22hopefully I'll get it on 17 in Tahoe this year.
01:00:25And then I'll sprint in there.
01:00:27I'll dive into the, into the lake,
01:00:28try to catch football in the process.
01:00:30And, and then I probably won't finish.
01:00:32Do you think maybe your dad's lying to you?
01:00:34Maybe he's just jealous that you're so good at golf.
01:00:36So he just tells you that he gets all these holes in one.
01:00:38So that way just, it pisses you off.
01:00:40Well, that's a good point
01:00:41because every time I play with him, he thinks like,
01:00:43you know, I, my probably the strongest part of my game
01:00:45is I hit the ball a long ways.
01:00:46I always said that since I was little,
01:00:47even when I was 150 pounds soaking wet in high school.
01:00:51And so my dad, whenever he plays with me,
01:00:53he thinks that he's going to like,
01:00:54try to like hit it as far as me.
01:00:57And so he's swinging out of his shoes.
01:00:58He's like basically falling over when he's swinging.
01:01:00So yeah, maybe that's a good point.
01:01:02Maybe he's just like, all right,
01:01:03well, this is what I got on you.
01:01:04So I'm going to, I'm going to make it up
01:01:06and say that I got these hole in one
01:01:07just so I have something on me.
01:01:08Yeah. Yeah.
01:01:09All right. Dumb question.
01:01:11It might not be a dumb question,
01:01:12but last year wasn't the best for the Panthers.
01:01:17How much did it suck?
01:01:18Yeah, it was brutal.
01:01:19It was brutal.
01:01:20You know, losing in any, you know, sport obviously,
01:01:23or anything you do, losing is never fun,
01:01:25especially when you're a competitor.
01:01:27And especially when you put so much into it, right?
01:01:29Like we got these OTAs,
01:01:30we got all the awesome training that we do on our own.
01:01:33You know, you go through training camp
01:01:34and like the grind is only worth it
01:01:36if you like have like a good year,
01:01:39and so it was definitely tough.
01:01:41There was a lot of adversity throughout it.
01:01:43A lot of kind of stuff that people
01:01:46will probably never know that happened.
01:01:47It's just, you know, that you can't make up.
01:01:50But at the end of the day,
01:01:51I believe not only was it probably the best thing
01:01:53that ever happened to me,
01:01:54just learning how to deal with adversity,
01:01:56learning how to be a leader through major storms.
01:02:01But I think for, you know, Bryce,
01:02:03a lot of the young guys,
01:02:04maybe some of the coaches that we still have around,
01:02:07like all of our defensive staff,
01:02:08I think it's probably the best thing
01:02:09that ever happened to us.
01:02:10Cause it really teaches you a lot.
01:02:11When you're winning and everything is great,
01:02:14you're not really learning a lot.
01:02:15You know, the most, you know,
01:02:18I think the most, you know,
01:02:21things that you get better at the most
01:02:23are when things aren't good.
01:02:24Yeah.
01:02:25And so we were able to get a lot of that last year.
01:02:27Yeah.
01:02:28Like, and obviously it's kind of a jokey question,
01:02:30but I'm more like,
01:02:32cause we're obviously sports fans,
01:02:34we're watching all the games,
01:02:35and when you have a team that's losing,
01:02:37the jokes get made.
01:02:38But I would imagine just like having to show up
01:02:41and do your job every day
01:02:42has to take a little bit of a mental toll in that season
01:02:45where it's like, we're doing the process
01:02:48and then we're not getting the results.
01:02:50Yeah, 100%.
01:02:51And then on top of that, like,
01:02:53you know, to be a good leader,
01:02:55it's not what you're doing when you're winning.
01:02:57It's what you're doing when you're losing.
01:02:58So every day, it was kind of like
01:03:00a little bit of a pep talk as I'm going to the facility.
01:03:02Like, hey, like,
01:03:03I don't really care what's going on in this season.
01:03:06I got to put a smile on my face.
01:03:08I got to have energy.
01:03:09I got to have excitement to go to work every day.
01:03:11And there was a lot of blessings in it,
01:03:13you know, through this year
01:03:14for my family outside of football
01:03:17and even in the building,
01:03:19just like the joy that I had coming to work every day
01:03:21was still there.
01:03:22You know, like, obviously it's like,
01:03:24we've already talked about it,
01:03:25it's stunt losing, it's the worst.
01:03:28As a team, you know, as coming together, it's the worst,
01:03:30but there was a lot of joy.
01:03:32For me, it made me realize how much I love the game,
01:03:35how much I love being around people,
01:03:36how much I love sacrificing things to try to have success.
01:03:40So there was a lot of blessings in it.
01:03:41Yeah.
01:03:42Is there something that you're working on this off season?
01:03:43Because NBA players are always like, you know,
01:03:44I'm going to add this element, this wrinkle to my game.
01:03:46You've been in the league for a long time.
01:03:48You're a pretty good route runner already,
01:03:50but is there something that you're trying to work on
01:03:52to improve on even at this stage in your career?
01:03:55Yeah, for sure.
01:03:55I, and people are probably going to laugh at this,
01:03:58I just saw a thing that came out saying
01:04:00that I'm the oldest active wide receiver in the NFL,
01:04:02which is wild, but I don't feel that way.
01:04:05But in that being said,
01:04:06I want to be the fastest I've ever been.
01:04:09So my goal is to lean out,
01:04:11to be as fast as I've ever been,
01:04:12top end speed, change the direction.
01:04:15And I truly, I think I can do it.
01:04:17I feel great right now.
01:04:18I'm excited to go into training camp
01:04:20to kind of these next four or five weeks
01:04:22and really train and push the tempo,
01:04:24get in the best shape of my life.
01:04:26And just to be a complete receivers.
01:04:28You know, I think a lot of times as you get older
01:04:30as a receiver, like, oh, you got to put him in the slot
01:04:32and he's slowing down.
01:04:33But I truly believe that where I'm best
01:04:36is being outside, playing against one-on-one coverage,
01:04:39beating man coverage and going and making plays.
01:04:42So my goal is to be as fast and explosive
01:04:45as I possibly can.
01:04:46Yeah.
01:04:46It's crazy to say that because you're,
01:04:48it's not like you're 36, 37, you're 33.
01:04:51And that's going to be the oldest receiver in the NFL.
01:04:54That's kind of wild to think about.
01:04:55And when you came out of college,
01:04:57so you were undrafted and having to grind
01:05:00to make the Vikings.
01:05:01We've talked to our good friend, Will Compton.
01:05:03He's kind of given us a peek behind the scenes
01:05:06about what it's like being an undrafted guy
01:05:08and having to prove yourself,
01:05:09all the extra stuff you have to do,
01:05:11especially that first year.
01:05:13What was the process like of you trying out for the Vikings?
01:05:16And when did you realize I can do this?
01:05:19Like I'm good enough to play in the NFL.
01:05:21Yeah. So it was, it's crazy being undrafted.
01:05:24Obviously now that I like look back at it,
01:05:26it probably makes me more anxious or anxiety
01:05:28or like nervous looking back at it
01:05:31than I was in the moment.
01:05:32In the moment, I was just like going to work,
01:05:34playing football, having fun,
01:05:35not even really thinking about getting cut
01:05:37or what that looks like as an undrafted guy, especially.
01:05:40But yeah, it's a wild process.
01:05:43I think for me, I got very little reps in preseason.
01:05:47I think I got like three reps my first preseason.
01:05:50I go back to training camp and like,
01:05:52I felt like I was making plays and I'm like,
01:05:54you know, in rookie camp, obviously it was making plays
01:05:56because I was not even signed at the moment.
01:05:59And then, you know, after rookie camp, I was signed
01:06:01and given an opportunity to go to training camp
01:06:03and see what happened.
01:06:03But in preseason games, I was getting zero reps, zero.
01:06:07So it was hard to really prove myself to other teams.
01:06:10So I'm thinking like, man, if I get released
01:06:12and not on practice squad, like I'm probably,
01:06:14this is probably it.
01:06:15But thankfully the Vikings saw something in me,
01:06:18put me on practice squad.
01:06:19And that's when I really knew that I could do this
01:06:22at a high level because during that first year
01:06:25of being on practice squad,
01:06:26I was able to go against the starters every single day.
01:06:29And it was my goal to make them as mad as possible
01:06:32every single day.
01:06:33And so when I started beating the starters day in,
01:06:36day out consistently, didn't matter if it was in the field
01:06:39or in the red zone, it didn't matter.
01:06:40Like I was going out there with a mission to show them like,
01:06:43I'm going to whoop you every single day
01:06:45and show that I can play at a high level.
01:06:46When I started doing that on a consistent basis,
01:06:48I knew I could play at a high level.
01:06:49It was just now it's like, all right,
01:06:51like how do I get an opportunity?
01:06:53Going into the next year I go and same kind of type of deal.
01:06:57I'm like, you know, playing some special teams,
01:07:00you're like maybe the seventh, eighth receiver.
01:07:03Thankfully got an opportunity to make the active roster
01:07:07and basically just play special teams.
01:07:09And I, again, I made it my mission
01:07:11that I was going to dominate my role.
01:07:14I was going to go out there
01:07:15and every single time I stepped on that field,
01:07:16I was going to be noticed on tape.
01:07:18And I kind of kept doing that and doing that
01:07:19until I got an opportunity to play a receiver
01:07:22and made the most of it and the rest is history.
01:07:24Yeah, I mean, it's an incredible story.
01:07:26I also love the fact that you weren't invited to the combine
01:07:28and then you did the regional combine
01:07:31and you finished with like top 20 times.
01:07:34That had to feel good and being like,
01:07:36hey, you were in a 4-4-5,
01:07:38which I don't know how you're going to get faster than that.
01:07:40That's a crazy statement.
01:07:41Maybe you will.
01:07:42But that had to feel at least a moment where like,
01:07:45I belong here.
01:07:46You guys didn't invite me to the combine
01:07:48and I went and I showed out.
01:07:49And if I had been invited to the combine,
01:07:51I would have been a top 20 guy in terms of metrics.
01:07:54Yeah, it's wild because I don't think people even know
01:07:57that those are my times.
01:07:58Right.
01:07:59And like some of the numbers that stack up
01:08:00against the guys that were in the draft.
01:08:02And so at the time when I got those results back,
01:08:05I'm like, oh heck, like I might get drafted.
01:08:08Like late rounds, like there was never a question
01:08:11about my tape.
01:08:12Like, could I run routes?
01:08:13Could I catch the football?
01:08:14Like there was never a question about that.
01:08:15It was more like, oh, he's a D2 guy.
01:08:17Like can he run?
01:08:19You know, competition wasn't great.
01:08:21So when I started putting those numbers up, I'm like,
01:08:24well, they don't really have anything to say that I can't do.
01:08:27And obviously that's not how they think about it.
01:08:31They didn't, I don't think a lot of people
01:08:32still even knew who I was.
01:08:34I still remember the day that I went
01:08:36to that super regional combine in Dallas
01:08:39and at the stadium there.
01:08:41And I kind of, you know, like I said,
01:08:45I put those numbers up.
01:08:46So you're getting some scouts coming up to you,
01:08:47talking to you.
01:08:49And so I'm like, man, like this is a real opportunity
01:08:51to get drafted here.
01:08:52And before that, I'm like, there's no way
01:08:53I'll get drafted.
01:08:54I just need an opportunity.
01:08:56But yeah, it's crazy that still didn't really
01:08:58get any interest at all after that.
01:09:00Yeah.
01:09:00I want to go back to like halfway through your career
01:09:04for the Vikings when Teddy Bridgewater was the quarterback
01:09:08and he gets injured.
01:09:09Did you throw up?
01:09:10Well, I was, I didn't throw up, but man,
01:09:13I have a vivid memory of that.
01:09:15I was as close to Teddy as you probably could be.
01:09:19I wasn't in on the play, but I was like right behind
01:09:21where the quarterback stands on that play.
01:09:23I believe if I remember right,
01:09:25I believe it was just like a jog through.
01:09:26We were like going into week one.
01:09:28We were just finished up all of our preseason games.
01:09:31And so it was kind of like a jog through practice
01:09:33right before they make all the cuts going into week one.
01:09:36And he just was taking a three quarter speed drop
01:09:40and stumbled and tripped a little bit and stepped wrong.
01:09:43And I will never forget what that looked like.
01:09:46And then just the pain and what just happened ensued
01:09:51after that with no one really, everybody in shock,
01:09:54but I mean, unbelievable job by the training staff
01:09:56and those guys, the medical staff to really save Teddy
01:09:59and give him another chance at, you know,
01:10:02save his leg and give him another chance
01:10:03at playing at a high level.
01:10:05And going into that game, it's kind of wild
01:10:07because we just had played a preseason game.
01:10:09I believe it was against the Chargers at home.
01:10:12And going into that, we were like going into that week one,
01:10:15we're like, man, like this is our year.
01:10:17Like Teddy's lights out right now.
01:10:19He's taking this like crazy leadership role
01:10:22and just flourishing in that, like so confident.
01:10:26And if any of you guys have been around Teddy,
01:10:29like he is one of the most fun people to be around
01:10:31because he has this really cool ability
01:10:33to relate to everybody and have fun
01:10:36but also be serious at the same time.
01:10:38So like there was a lot of expectations there.
01:10:41And when that happened, everybody was just kind of like
01:10:44in shock and didn't know how to feel.
01:10:45So we were in a Vegas airport on a flight to Minnesota
01:10:51to come to your facility to interview Teddy
01:10:53and Zimmer and like everyone.
01:10:56And we were literally sitting, waiting for our flight
01:10:58when we saw the news, we still came,
01:11:00but the Vikings stashed us in like a basement
01:11:03and like didn't, it was crazy.
01:11:05We showed up the next day and the facility,
01:11:08like we saw it firsthand, everyone in shock.
01:11:11So we're always linked to Teddy Bridgewater being like,
01:11:13man, we were this close to interviewing all the guys
01:11:15and that happened.
01:11:17Did someone throw up?
01:11:18Oh man, that's, I can't confirm or deny that.
01:11:21Okay, someone did, yeah.
01:11:23Yeah, someone did.
01:11:24Probably, I mean, honestly, like I'm telling you,
01:11:26I'm still like, I'm in shock from that moment.
01:11:29Like still to this day, like it was just,
01:11:31you can't explain it.
01:11:32You can't explain the feeling.
01:11:34You can't explain anything because everyone was like,
01:11:37no one knew what to do.
01:11:38And no one knew what was gonna happen.
01:11:41No one was going with Teddy.
01:11:42Like it was crazy and something
01:11:46that I'll never forget, obviously.
01:11:47Yeah, it must've been a wild day.
01:11:50Also, during your tenure with the Vikings, this was 2015,
01:11:54a very important contract dispute went down.
01:11:57I'm curious to hear kind of like what happened
01:12:00behind the scenes, if you guys had any strong thoughts
01:12:02about it.
01:12:03Your unofficial mascot, Ragnar the Viking.
01:12:06You remember Ragnar?
01:12:07You used to drive the motorcycle out onto the field.
01:12:11This is where I think the Vikings
01:12:12really took a big misstep here.
01:12:14He held out and he demanded a 10-year contract
01:12:18for $1.6 million.
01:12:21And the Vikings said, no, we don't need you
01:12:23to drive the motorcycle on the field anymore.
01:12:25This negotiation is over.
01:12:27And they kind of washed their hands of Ragnar.
01:12:30Were you trying to support Ragnar behind the scenes
01:12:32like we were?
01:12:33Did you advocate like, hey, you got to pay your best guys.
01:12:37Let's get Ragnar paid here so we can keep
01:12:38the good vibes going?
01:12:39Or were you in favor of the team line at that point
01:12:44and say, you know what?
01:12:45That's money that could be used on facilities.
01:12:47Well, I'll say this, I have a different perspective
01:12:49because I grew up going to Vikings games as a kid
01:12:52and seeing it.
01:12:53And one of the coolest things, you're in the Metrodome,
01:12:55like loud environment, the noises are echoing in there.
01:12:59And then you got the Ragnar and the motorcycle
01:13:02ramping it up, brings him out of the tunnel.
01:13:05One of the coolest things ever in my opinion.
01:13:08And then like for that to happen,
01:13:10obviously I'm a big Ragnar fan.
01:13:12I'd love to have him back.
01:13:13In fact, I think, why not bring him back now?
01:13:16I think, you know, get him out.
01:13:18I think he's like a high school principal
01:13:19or he was at the time, that was his story.
01:13:22And he demanded the raise and they said no.
01:13:26So tough negotiations there,
01:13:29but I think they bring him back.
01:13:30I think that's a reasonable request.
01:13:32$1.6 million, eight home games a season, 10 years.
01:13:35He wanted to be a Viking for life.
01:13:36He wanted to be locked up at that point.
01:13:38You gotta take care of your guys.
01:13:40You gotta pay Ragnar.
01:13:40Yeah, gotta lock a guy up like that.
01:13:43Yeah, just a big time vibes guy.
01:13:44Was that hard for you since, you know,
01:13:46you grew up in Minnesota, you're a Vikings fan,
01:13:49you play football in college at Minnesota,
01:13:51you go to the Vikings.
01:13:52Was it hard for you to leave?
01:13:55Did you, would you ever see a world where you're like,
01:13:57yeah, I am going to test free agency.
01:13:59Yeah, I'll go play somewhere else.
01:14:02How did that process go down?
01:14:03Well, I was about to say, you know,
01:14:04Ragnar wanted to be a Viking for life.
01:14:06So did I, and it didn't work out for either of us.
01:14:08So yeah, no, it was tough.
01:14:11It was tough.
01:14:12It was a weird thing.
01:14:14You know, once you get into like year 10 with the team,
01:14:16you're kind of thinking like, man,
01:14:17like getting close to the end,
01:14:19like hopefully you can just finish it out.
01:14:21And obviously what a story, like grew up a Vikings fan,
01:14:27never left the state of Minnesota, high school, college,
01:14:30and then the NFL, you know,
01:14:32was able to be a part of some awesome teams.
01:14:34And I'm like, man, this is like storybook ending, right?
01:14:36Like I got to watch Chad Greenway come out of the tunnel
01:14:39the last time, like knew he was retiring.
01:14:42One of the coolest moments, like chills down your body.
01:14:44I always thought that would be me someday.
01:14:47And then for that to kind of end the way it did was,
01:14:49it was a real bummer, obviously.
01:14:51But at the end of the day, it's a business.
01:14:54And like, if I put myself in their shoes,
01:14:57I probably would have felt like doing the same thing.
01:15:00You know, like old receiver, you know,
01:15:03coming out of his prime, you know,
01:15:05they got some young guys coming up.
01:15:07I totally understand where they were coming from.
01:15:09And at the same time, I felt like,
01:15:11hey, like I can still play at a high level
01:15:14and I don't want to retire yet.
01:15:15So yeah, I get it.
01:15:18I got no hard feelings.
01:15:19I love the Minnesota Vikings organization.
01:15:21I love everybody in that building.
01:15:23I still have such a great connection
01:15:25with so many people in that building.
01:15:27So that probably makes it even harder.
01:15:28Cause I'm like, man, I'm in Minnesota right now
01:15:31for a little month break.
01:15:32I just want to go over to the building
01:15:33and say what's up to everybody.
01:15:35But it's just a little bit different.
01:15:36But when I'm done playing and stuff,
01:15:38obviously I'll be back there and, you know,
01:15:41can't wait to be able to reunite with a lot of those guys.
01:15:44That's awesome.
01:15:45So the beef was squashed with the Vikings.
01:15:48What about your beef with Belichick?
01:15:50Still going on?
01:15:51That's not squashed.
01:15:52I was hoping to be.
01:15:53Yeah.
01:15:54Tell your side of the story.
01:15:55I was going to get the roast at the roast with Tom Brady.
01:15:57So I could, you know, roast Belichick.
01:16:00But no, no, there's no hard feelings there.
01:16:03Obviously so much respect for that guy, man,
01:16:05playing against his defenses.
01:16:08Wow. That was, that was not fun.
01:16:09Especially when, when you were making plays and stuff,
01:16:12he's just going to take you out of the game
01:16:13any way possible.
01:16:15But yeah, I was, I was a little frustrated at the time.
01:16:17Yeah. So what exactly happened?
01:16:18It was, it was a injury that he then was able to use
01:16:22to challenge a play.
01:16:23And then afterwards he did a blow by on the handshakes.
01:16:26Yeah. So, so I didn't, I felt like there was a little bit
01:16:29of a, I don't want to say cheating,
01:16:31but there's a little bit of like stretching the rules.
01:16:34And we were like losing at them at the time.
01:16:37I was frustrated.
01:16:38They were double teaming me.
01:16:39I wasn't getting to be able to do my thing.
01:16:43And I'm a little bit of hot headed.
01:16:45I've had to work on over my career.
01:16:46So I saw him kind of look at a player,
01:16:50player takes the knees, not even injured,
01:16:51but he takes a knee, gives them time.
01:16:53Like we, they had given us the first down.
01:16:56We were finally starting to get a little momentum.
01:16:57And then, you know, he was able to challenge the play
01:16:59and I was, I wasn't too happy.
01:17:01So I just kind of let him know like that.
01:17:02I didn't, I didn't feel like that was the right thing to do,
01:17:06but it is what it is.
01:17:08Yeah. Yeah. So, but everything's okay now.

01:17:10I mean, he's not coaching anymore.

01:17:32So, so it must've, it must've been like a good impression.
01:17:35He must've liked that, that kind of tenacity
01:17:38or competitiveness, I guess.

01:17:41What, what, so Kirk Cousins gets talked about a lot
01:17:44in the media.
01:17:45He's had a really good career.
01:17:47Obviously your teammate for a long time.
01:17:49What does the media get wrong about Kirk?
01:17:51Well, I think, I think just like the type of person he is.
01:17:54I mean, again, like as NFL athletes
01:17:57or athletes in general, right?
01:17:58Like people only see what they see on Sundays for us,
01:18:02you know, Sundays, Mondays, whatever.
01:18:03And they don't see the work that gets put in to get there.
01:18:07And that guy is the most process driven person
01:18:10I've ever been around in my life.
01:18:11It's unbelievable.
01:18:13He does not leave any stone unturned.
01:18:15He does not, he, I mean,
01:18:16he will never not be prepared for a game.
01:18:19And when you're on that team, you, you can't,
01:18:23you can't do anything but appreciate that
01:18:25and to really trust it and to buy into it.
01:18:27So I think what people get wrong is, is like,
01:18:31yeah, he's made a lot of money and no Super Bowls
01:18:34and all that, but like,
01:18:36he's putting everything he possibly can.
01:18:38He's getting paid that money
01:18:40and he's not stealing from them.
01:18:41He is putting every ounce of time, effort, money
01:18:47into having the most success as a team and as an individual.
01:18:50So when you see that day in and day out, you're like,
01:18:52you know what?
01:18:53Like, I'm good with it.
01:18:55Like pay him as much as you got to,
01:18:56because he's going to give you as a team,
01:18:59a great opportunity to win games
01:19:00just because of his process.
01:19:01Yeah. Has he ever cooked, grilled for you?
01:19:04Where he put a steak on tinfoil?
01:19:06So I saw the pictures.
01:19:07I feel like this was like maybe four or five years ago
01:19:10when he posted on and I texted him immediately.
01:19:12I'm like, what, what is that?
01:19:14And you know, he didn't like that.
01:19:16You know, he was kind of like, what do you mean?
01:19:17It's just, you know, it's a steak, like,
01:19:20but it looked terrible.
01:19:21So I'm actually going out there this summer
01:19:24to his place on Michigan and going to visit him for a day.
01:19:28So we'll see how his food grilling ability is
01:19:31and if it's any good.
01:19:32Yeah. What were his,
01:19:34his aux cord privileges like in the weight room?
01:19:36Cause I know he's a big Creed guy.
01:19:38He likes to blast Creed and Nickelback, I think.

01:19:52the O-line couldn't have been more on board on that.
01:19:56So, so they took over the aux cord
01:19:58and like 90% of the team hated it.
01:20:02But, but the O-line, like, what are you going to do?
01:20:04Like, you're not going to say anything to the O-linemen.
01:20:06Like they, they just kind of, you know, it is what it is.
01:20:08They got their own little fraternity.
01:20:10It's kind of funny.
01:20:11Like when you think about the O-linemen in the NFL,
01:20:13it's like pretty much every room I've ever been in
01:20:16or every team I've ever been on that has like,
01:20:18the O-line is kind of like this little fraternity.
01:20:20Like they're like the boys, like they hang out together
01:20:23all the time outside the building.
01:20:24Like they always have each other's backs.
01:20:26And so that was kind of what it was.
01:20:28And they just took over the aux cord
01:20:29and Kirk was all for it,
01:20:31which was kind of a cool little bit there.
01:20:34I like how quarterbacks always get their offensive linemen.
01:20:36They usually get them like golf carts, Yeti coolers,
01:20:40maybe some like fishing gear,
01:20:41a nice present at the end of the year.
01:20:43Do you, as wide receivers,
01:20:44do you ever buy presents for the quarterbacks
01:20:46if you have a great year?
01:20:47So, so that's always an interesting thing
01:20:49because I feel like that, that whole bit
01:20:51has gotten like way overblown
01:20:53and now has made it like super awkward for the quarterbacks
01:20:56because now I feel like the O-linemen are like
01:20:59expecting like this, like grand prize
01:21:02and like this big show, like walk out into the field.
01:21:05I was like, Oh, brand new ATV.
01:21:07Like, it's almost like it's like the person right
01:21:09or something.
01:21:10And I don't know.
01:21:11I just feel like it's been overblown.
01:21:13Like, yeah.
01:21:14Is it nice to like, yeah.
01:21:15Hey man, like you're doing a great job.
01:21:17You're protecting me, keeping healthy.
01:21:18That's awesome.
01:21:19But long story short, no,
01:21:20I have not boughten a quarterback a gift.
01:21:25Maybe, maybe I should, but, but yeah,
01:21:28it's, it's kind of a weird, awkward thing.
01:21:30Usually you try to take care of the people in the building.
01:21:32Right.
01:21:33That like, are not like making millions of dollars
01:21:36and are grinding away.
01:21:37I mean, you think about,
01:21:38you go into this, this NFL building.
01:21:41I mean, you got so many employees
01:21:43that absolutely give everything they have
01:21:45into that organization and want to win
01:21:47probably worse than most of the players
01:21:49because they've been a part of this organization
01:21:51for so long.
01:21:52I mean, our equipment guy, Dennis Ryan
01:21:54in Minnesota had been there for forever.
01:21:56I think like 40 some years,
01:21:58and I'm probably wrong on the number,
01:21:59but it was unbelievably just retired.
01:22:01Now they named the equipment room after him,
01:22:03but there's so many of that in Carolina.
01:22:05Donnie, he's the same thing.
01:22:06He's been there forever.
01:22:07Been a part of all this history.
01:22:09And, you know, those are the guys
01:22:11you usually want to take care of
01:22:12and you want to, you know,
01:22:13get them a nice Christmas gift just because,
01:22:17you know, of all the work they put in.
01:22:18Yeah. All right.
01:22:19So this has been awesome.
01:22:20I got a couple last questions.
01:22:22The first one is the Minneapolis miracle.
01:22:24I know this is, you know, you know,
01:22:27it happened whatever, six, seven years ago,
01:22:29but just take me back real quick to the locker room after,
01:22:32because I would imagine that was the coolest locker room
01:22:35to ever be in after Stefan Diggs makes that catch
01:22:39and you guys win with no time left on the clock.
01:22:41I've never, I've never hugged so many people
01:22:43in my entire life.
01:22:44I mean, it was like, you didn't even know the people.
01:22:46You're like, yeah, giving a big hug,
01:22:48dabbing them up.
01:22:49You're like, I have no idea who you are.
01:22:50I don't even know if you're part of the team,
01:22:52but like, let's go.
01:22:52Like you're giving bear hugs to everybody.
01:22:56It was, it was crazy.
01:22:57I mean, again, like you put so much effort
01:23:00and time and energy and sacrifice into this.
01:23:06And like, that's your goal, right?
01:23:07Like you're doing it all with the end goal,
01:23:09like get to the Superbowl, get to the NFC championship game
01:23:11to give you an opportunity to go to the Superbowl
01:23:13and like to win the way we did,
01:23:15like the year we were having.
01:23:17And like the Saints was always like this crazy rival.
01:23:20We always faced them and it was always a tough matchup.
01:23:23And then like that game, like the ups and downs,
01:23:25like the emotions, like, oh, we're going to win this
01:23:27for sure.
01:23:28Oh, wait, now we're going to lose this for sure.
01:23:29Oh, now we're going to win it.
01:23:30Like, it was like four times that you were like,
01:23:32oh, like this is guaranteed, like either win or loss.
01:23:35And for it to end the way it did,
01:23:37like it was the coolest experience of my life.
01:23:40I'll never get tired of talking about the miracle.
01:23:43People every single day pretty much will come up to me
01:23:46and ask me about that game.
01:23:47So pretty cool.
01:23:49A lot of memories from that game.
01:23:51Obviously disappointed the next week very quickly
01:23:54because had our chance to go to a Superbowl.
01:23:57It was in Minnesota.
01:23:58First team ever to play in a Superbowl in their own state.
01:24:03So that would have been pretty cool.
01:24:04But yeah, really cool memory.
01:24:07Yeah, it's an all-time sports moment
01:24:09and it's why we watch sports as fans.

01:24:47Again, that's always been my strength.
01:24:51But the issue is I start to get a little bit of confidence
01:24:54and then I'm like, and I'm a meathead.
01:24:56So I'm like, oh, I'm gonna hit driver
01:24:59even though I shouldn't.
01:25:00There's like a 20 yard gap, right?
01:25:02And there's like out of bounds on the right,
01:25:04water on the left.
01:25:05I'm like, I'm gonna hit driver.
01:25:06I'm gonna bomb it.
01:25:07And so that gets me into a lot of trouble.
01:25:10But so what I would say is playing like actual smart golf,
01:25:13like thinking through the golf course,
01:25:15like Tiger says it in a lot of his stuff, books,
01:25:18and you can read about it.
01:25:19You can hear interviews.
01:25:20He talks about it like,
01:25:22he's not gonna like overpower you in a lot of ways.
01:25:25He's gonna outthink you.
01:25:26He's gonna play the course
01:25:28how the course is supposed to be played.
01:25:30And not a lot of people can do that.
01:25:32So I think that's what I gotta do.
01:25:34I also got it out there.
01:25:35It's all about the wedges.
01:25:36Like, can you hit those 60 to 120 yard shots,
01:25:42which you think would be the easiest shots.
01:25:44But when you get a little pressure,
01:25:45greens are tough and you get,
01:25:49it's just those shots become tough.
01:25:51So I'm gonna be grinding on those 60 to 120 yard shots
01:25:55and try to give myself a chance at,
01:25:57you know, going and winning that thing.
01:25:58Have you thought about wearing the arm sleeve,
01:26:00the compression sleeve on your left arm
01:26:02like you do during games?
01:26:03Like maybe wear that on the course.
01:26:05That's a great point because I've never gone a game
01:26:08without the arm sleeve in my entire career or a visor.
01:26:12So maybe I should wear like some sort of a visor
01:26:15and an arm sleeve and that could maybe help me out.
01:26:18Yeah, I think that's a smart move.
01:26:20I noticed that early when you were talking
01:26:22about the biggest threats,
01:26:22I don't think you said Patrick Mahomes.
01:26:24That's interesting.
01:26:26I don't think Patrick Mahomes
01:26:26is the biggest threat on the golf course.
01:26:28All the football obviously is the biggest,
01:26:30but golf course, I think a little different.
01:26:32This is how you motivate a man like that.
01:26:33Yeah, he's gonna win another Super Bowl.
01:26:34He's gonna hear this.
01:26:35Yeah.
01:26:37I know he does have like a real golf hole in his backyard.
01:26:40So maybe he's been grinding away
01:26:42and he's gonna completely surprise me.
01:26:43And he does get better every year.
01:26:45He's got a great swing.
01:26:46I just, I don't see him winning it.
01:26:50But again, like I said, I probably just motivated him.
01:26:52He's probably gonna blow my butt.
01:26:53Do you have a caddy for this?
01:26:55Yeah, so my brother-in-law,
01:26:56he's caddy for me the last few years
01:26:58and we have a great time, very similar type of people.
01:27:00So he loves the game of golf.
01:27:02So he's been my caddy.
01:27:04We've kind of switched caddies over the years,
01:27:06but always like a close friend, a buddy.
01:27:10And so just try to go out there and have fun.
01:27:12But also I tend to get a little too competitive.
01:27:15So having somebody that knows how to calm me down
01:27:18a little bit and bring me back to reality
01:27:20that my real job is football and not golf.
01:27:23I tend to forget that pretty quickly
01:27:25when I get out to Tahoe.
01:27:26It's interesting,
01:27:27because the old saying is Minnesota nice.
01:27:29I don't think you're Minnesota nice, are you?
01:27:31I'm not Minnesota nice,
01:27:32but I do have this, and my wife hates it,
01:27:35probably the worst quality that I have for her.
01:27:38But I have this ability to be a people pleaser a little bit
01:27:41where I just, I have a tough time being the bad guy.
01:27:46But when the competitive juices flow,
01:27:49I always say, whenever I get a chance to talk to the team,
01:27:52talk to the receivers, whatever,
01:27:54I always say, when you get in between those lines,
01:27:56you can't be Mr. Nice Guy.
01:27:58You can't be the same guy you are every day
01:28:01that you should be, right?
01:28:02The way you treat people in the building,
01:28:04the way you treat your coaches,
01:28:05the way that you handle your business
01:28:08and do things the right way.
01:28:10Yeah, you should do those things, obviously.
01:28:12But when you step in between those lines,
01:28:14you can't be that guy,
01:28:15because you will not be that dog,
01:28:17that different type of player that you want to be
01:28:21if you don't, hey, I remember playing on special teams,
01:28:24it probably helped me with that mindset,
01:28:25is if you go out there and just think
01:28:27you're just gonna go out there and do your job,
01:28:29you are gonna get destroyed.
01:28:31So you gotta somehow flip this switch to,
01:28:34no, I'm a dog.
01:28:35I'm gonna go out there and murder someone,
01:28:37even though I'm unmatched, I'm not matched up to that.
01:28:40When I was playing special teams, I was 195 pounds,
01:28:43usually having to walk a 230-pound linebacker
01:28:47that was running a 4-4.
01:28:49And so I'm unmatched here,
01:28:50but I'm just gonna turn this brain off
01:28:52and flip a switch and just be a dog.
01:28:55And yeah, that's kind of where it comes from.
01:28:58Minnesota Nasty, that's what I call it.
01:28:59Love that.
