00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're getting real black and white, no grey at all.
00:14These are the 20 best games where you are the bad guy.
00:18Obviously it's not always the easiest to define good and bad, but if a solid argument can
00:21be made we're going to discuss it.
00:24Let's go.
00:25Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:29the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:33Kain
00:42The far more popular game in the Legacy of Kain series would be Soul Reaver, with many
00:46fans of the game not even realising Soul Reaver was the second in the series.
00:50The evil antagonist and final boss of Soul Reaver is none other than Kain, the vampire
00:55king who casts our protagonist to his death at the beginning of the game.
00:59Wait a minute, wasn't Kain the protagonist of the first game?
01:03Correct!
01:04In Blood Omen Legacy of Kain you play as the soon to be antagonist as he fights through
01:08the land of Nozgoth to find the cure to his vampire curse and seek revenge on those who
01:13murdered him at the beginning of the game.
01:15Wait a minute, trauma cycles!
01:22The Killer
01:30Unlike Legacy of Kain, you'd struggle to find a moral compass for the protagonist of
01:34the party hard series.
01:35From publisher Tiny Build, the game is small, simple and straightforward.
01:39Make your way to a party packed wall to wall with victims and try and murder everybody
01:43without being caught.
01:44The game is brutal, aggressive and actually loads of fun as you find clever ways to turn
01:48the party into a gravesite.
01:51Superman
01:58Throughout the main storyline of the game Injustice 2, Superman's sanity gradually
02:02deteriorates.
02:03He fully and totally loses his marbles, and he's way up there on my list of people who
02:07I'd want to keep their sanity.
02:09However, players have the opportunity to align with him at the climax of the game.
02:13Opting for Superman over Batman and emerging victorious in the ensuing battle leads to
02:17the undesirable outcome where Superman manipulates other characters to serve his agenda.
02:22I miss the old Superman, not this spooky bitch.
02:31Creature
02:32When it comes to arcade games, Rampage stands out as one of the few where players can flex
02:39their villainous muscles.
02:40Whether you're controlling a colossal mutated lizard, gorilla or wolf, you can let your
02:45rage out however you'd like.
02:47Of course, it's understandable they're enraged after enduring countless experiments, but
02:50an argument for a bad guys can still quite easily be made by the innocent civilian who
02:55just became a puddle.
02:57The game lets you devour innocent people found amidst the wreckage of skyscrapers, and I
03:01think that makes it a 10 out of 10 in my opinion.
03:03Alex Mercer
03:12Prototype grants players the ability to unleash their extraordinary abilities upon the unsuspecting
03:18New York City well before the ending's revelation lets you know you're a bad boy, so I think
03:22even without the twist, you're still not a good guy.
03:25Alex Mercer serves as the protagonist in the initial prototype installment, wielding shapeshifting
03:30powers that render him incredibly powerful.
03:33Initially, Alex believes he fights on the side of righteousness, combating the virus
03:37ravaging the city.
03:38That is until he and the player confront the truth.
03:41Alex inadvertently unleashed the virus, making him the game's true antagonist.
03:45Naughty naughty Alex, the Overlord.
04:01In the Overlord series, players assume control of the titular Overlord and his horde of minions
04:05in their quest for world domination.
04:07We've attempted to steer clear of games on this list that give you the choice to be good
04:10or bad, and focused instead on games where you have to be bad, and although there is
04:14still a choice system in Overlord, these games veer towards a spectrum from bad to
04:18downright sadistic.
04:20Admittedly, the most recent installment, Overlord Fellowship of Evil, falls short of expectation,
04:25but the initial entries stand out as amazing games where you are the bad guy.
04:30Vito Scaletta.
04:31In Mafia 2, Vito, a former soldier, now pursues the path of an aspiring gangster, aiming to
04:48ascend the hierarchy within the Falcone crime syndicate.
04:52To achieve his ambitions, Vito employs the standard tactics of a mobster, like intimidation,
04:56violence, and frequently straight up moida.
04:59Any Mafia game could be included on this list, really.
05:02It's tough to be a good guy in the Mafia, so we're just going with Mafia 2 because of
05:05one simple reason.
05:07LOOK OVER THERE, SOMETHING SHINY.
05:20Martin Walker.
05:21Spec Ops The Line is one of the most criminally forgotten narratives in modern gaming.
05:25The story is gripping, and a lot of that has to do with Martin Walker.
05:30As the game's storyline unfolds, Walker's stability deteriorates progressively, his mental
05:34state noticeably altered from the beginning of the game.
05:37His deeds shift from heroic to malevolent, prompting players to doubt the version of
05:41Walker we're initially shown.
05:43Ultimately, it becomes apparent that Walker is not who he seems, and revelations expose
05:47him as the mastermind behind the tyranny gripping Dubai.
05:51It's a twist we never saw coming, and it breaks our hearts to this day.
06:05Jack Garland.
06:07In Strangers of Paradise, Jack Garland, the main protagonist, initially appears to be
06:11a typical hero, seeking to defeat the villain and restore balance to the world.
06:15It's Final Fantasy, this ain't nothing new.
06:17However, as the story progresses, Jack's motivations become more ambiguous, and his
06:21actions blur the lines between heroism and villainy.
06:24And while he may not be inherently evil, Jack's relentless pursuit of chaos and his willingness
06:28to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals raise questions about his morality.
06:33At the end of the day, interpretation is a big part of this entry, and I'm writing the
06:37script so I'm saying Jack is a massive poo.
06:41Stubbs.
06:53Similar to an actual zombie horde, the flood of zombie-themed games, movies and TV shows
06:57in the early 2000s was ceaseless.
06:59However, Stubbs, the zombie and rebel without a pulse, distinguishes itself by allowing
07:03players to take control of one of the flesh-hungry creatures, rather than endlessly battling
07:08against them.
07:09Stubbs is lovable, but at the end of the day, and I hate to repeat myself, he is a flesh-hungry
07:13creature who wants to eat flesh from a person.
07:16Once they're dead.
07:17Bad dude.
07:26Goose
07:34This is genuinely my game of the year for 2019.
07:37Representing Melbourne, these Aussie boys created one of the most satisfying evil protagonists
07:41of all time, a goose.
07:44For those seeking a brief yet satisfying experience, Untitled Goose Game offers the ideal outlet
07:49for a cathartic adventure.
07:51While you're not aiming to unleash global havoc like in some of the other entries, you
07:54do embody a goose with a penchant for mischief, and perform small tasks that annoy, scare
07:59and upset the locals.
08:01It's a bloody good blast.
08:08Wanda
08:22Imagine walking into someone else's house, killing everyone there, and then when the
08:26police arrive, you say, no no no, I thought that by doing that, I could bring back my
08:30girlfriend.
08:31You'd be locked up for life.
08:33While one could argue that Wanda's desire to aid Dormin stems from his deep affection
08:37for Mono, rather than inherent malice, his deliberate disregard for the potential repercussions
08:42of his choices go well beyond selfishness, and definitely enters bad territory.
08:47Despite any justifications he and the player may offer, Wanda wipes every single one of
08:52the colossi off the face of the earth, even the ones who seem completely docile until
08:56provoked.
08:57Booker DeWitt
09:04In Bioshock Infinite, Booker DeWitt's role as the protagonist is complex and subject
09:09to interpretation.
09:11Initially presenting as a morally ambiguous figure, Booker is tasked with rescuing Elizabeth
09:15from the floating city of Columbia.
09:17However, as the narrative unfolds, it becomes apparent that Booker has a troubled past,
09:21leading involvement in violent conflicts and questionable decisions.
09:25Ultimately, Booker's actions and choices throughout the game contribute to the destabilization
09:29of Columbia, and the suffering of its inhabitants.
09:32The twist ending reveals that, although our version of Booker isn't technically Comstock,
09:37he does have those qualities within him, raising more concerns for his morality.
09:41Abby, Joel, and Ellie
10:12The first game spends less time exploring the idea of good and bad, but it does end
10:17with Joel brutally murdering an entire group of innocent civilians, arguably some of humanity's
10:23best.
10:24The second game, however, really explores the idea of good and bad, as no matter who
10:27you play as, you're always somebody's bad guy.
10:31The game aims to set up Abby as the villain, but after you're eventually put into her shoes,
10:35it's hard not to argue that things aren't exactly even.
10:39Joel kills Abby's dad and the remaining Fireflies, Abby kills Joel.
10:43Things should have stopped there, but Ellie decided to take it upon herself to murder
10:47everyone that Abby has ever stood next to.
10:50Not exactly a good guy move.
11:06Unknown
11:07In Endemic Creations Plague Inc, the identity of the entity controlled by the player remains
11:12ambiguous.
11:13However, one thing is certain, they embody the role of the antagonist.
11:16I mean, the game is called Plague Inc for god's sakes.
11:19I doubt it ends with everyone gaining superhuman powers and creating a new and better human
11:23race.
11:24Their objective is to engineer a virus with the sole purpose of maximizing casualties,
11:29a concept that, while undeniably grim, has garnered significant popularity among gamers.
11:34You know, because we're sick in the head.
11:37The monster.
11:45While many horror games rely on terrifying enemies and jump scares to evoke fear, Carrion
11:50takes a unique approach, with players themselves becoming the jump scarer.
11:54Controlling the monster throughout the game, they witness its terrifying evolution and
11:58prowess in causing death and chaos, by doing it themselves.
12:03And trust me, it's loads of fun.
12:05As the game unfolds, the creature's menace intensifies, with its potential escape from
12:09the confines of the lab posing a grave threat to humanity.
12:12In Carrion, there's no ambiguity, just straight up monster doing straight up hardcore murdering.
12:18Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
12:26Honestly we could have picked any GTA game, I don't think there's a single protagonist
12:29in the series who doesn't commit the worst that humanity can.
12:33Obviously Niko is avenging fallen comrades and CJ is trying to piece his community back
12:37together, but that doesn't justify running down a row of prostitutes in your car.
12:42The trio of GTA 5 goes to extreme measures to amass wealth and safeguard their interests,
12:47frequently disregarding the lives and welfare of others, even family members.
12:51It's precisely this morally ambiguous behaviour that renders Michael, Trevor and Franklin
12:56captivating characters.
12:58Players gain profound insight into their motivations and inner workings, adding depth to their
13:02personas.
13:04Crypto
13:08What are the chances that in a game titled Destroy All Humans, we would be saving humanity?
13:13Pretty minimal.
13:14Crypto, a Furon warrior, relishes in wreaking havoc and inflicting suffering upon Earth's
13:19inhabitants.
13:20The game's comedic undertone somewhat mitigates the gravity of such destruction, resulting
13:24in a uniquely enjoyable and entertaining experience, but for the sake of this entry, let's forget
13:30that we really like Crypto and focus instead on the fact that he's trying to kill each
13:34and every one of us.
13:36Not very nice Crypto, I expected more mate.
13:49Bowser
13:57Super Mario has many variations of games, but beyond sports, kart racing, fighting and
14:02party games, Super Mario RPG stands out as a notable example of how this series just
14:07never fails.
14:08Initially cast in his familiar role of kidnapping Princess Peach, Bowser surprisingly transitions
14:14into a key ally within the player's party.
14:16You could argue he's not a bad guy at this moment, but Bowser retains his status as the
14:21series' primary antagonist, despite his temporary alignment with Red and Green.
14:26Tim
14:27Featuring remarkable time manipulation mechanics, Braid emerged as one of the most innovative
14:32games of the early 21st century, and alongside games like Limbo, it significantly bolstered
14:37the legitimacy of indie games.
14:39Initially presented as a tale about Tim, a man capable of bending time, striving to rescue
14:44a princess from an evil knight, the game unravels a complex narrative.
14:49Surprisingly it's revealed that Tim is the antagonist, with the princess fleeing from
14:53him throughout the adventure.
14:54Braid's narrative twists subvert player expectation and removes all grey from the equation, leaving
15:00us feeling a little bit awful for what we've done.
