The Great Black-Backed Gull is a big seabird you might spot along the UK coast. It's the largest gull in the world, with adults growing up to 75 cm long. These birds have a white head and body, with dark grey wings and back. Their big yellow beak has a red spot on it.
These gulls are clever and will eat almost anything. They hunt fish, grab other birds' chicks, and even pinch food from people! They're not fussy eaters and will scavenge at rubbish dumps too.
You'll often see them near the sea, but they also visit lakes and fields inland. They make their nests on cliffs or islands, laying 2-3 eggs each year.
Great Black-Backed Gulls can live for over 20 years. They're found all around the UK, but more common in the north and west. While their numbers have gone up since the 1800s, some places have seen fewer of them lately.
