00:00Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
00:05Last week I joined the all-veteran group to raise awareness and draw attention to my bill,
00:09the Fair Maps Act, by skydiving from 14,000 feet in Cumberland County, North Carolina,
00:16just outside of Fort Liberty.
00:17I was proud to elevate the issue of partisan gerrymandering to new heights and call out
00:23the need for fair maps in North Carolina and across the country.
00:28My bill, the Fair Maps Act, combats partisan gerrymandering by establishing independent,
00:34nonpartisan redistricting commissions in every state.
00:37The Fair Maps Act has the potential to double the number of competitive House seats if signed
00:42into law.
00:43That is a big deal.
00:45In North Carolina and across the country, partisan gerrymandering has been used as a
00:50tool by politicians to manipulate the outcomes with surgical precision.
00:56Gerrymandering disenfranchises voters and leads to hyper-partisanship.
01:00It's the main reason we are on track to be the least productive Congress in our nation's
01:04history.
01:05Listen, folks, it's simple.
01:07Voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around.
01:10While my name won't be on the ballot this year, I'm not giving up or going out quietly.
01:14I'm going to do everything I can to fight for fair maps, end partisan gerrymandering,
01:18and protect the right to vote for every single North Carolinian.
