00:00Why would you do that?
00:01Who's sending a flat bottle of champagne?
00:03Do you know what I mean?
00:04That's...
00:06Welcome to Common Courtesy with Town & Country.
00:10Today we will be assessing your etiquette.
00:13I have a little edge to me,
00:14a little wickedness that possibly the Queen and I share,
00:17but good manners are important because
00:20respect for our fellow man is important,
00:22respect for our community and respect for ourself is important.
00:26A Bridgerton fan approaches you during dinner and asks for a selfie.
00:33Do you oblige or ask them to return after you've finished your meal?
00:38Interesting because sometimes I do oblige,
00:41but sometimes that can open the floodgates to other people in the restaurant who come along
00:46and decide that they would like to intrude on your personal evening with your wife.
00:51So it's a balancing act, I think.
00:54The Queen's reaction would be one of delight, one of inquisitiveness.
01:02That's if you got her on a good day.
01:04If you didn't get her on a good day, then off with your head.
01:08My opinion on season three is I'm so happy that these two amazing artists,
01:16Luke and Nicola, have got their time in the spotlight.
01:21I think the Queen...
01:22There's a wonderful scene in season three where she sees Penelope Featherington at a ball
01:30and she asks Lady Danbury,
01:32Who's that?
01:34And I think that's a really wonderful moment of the tide turning
01:39and the Queen having a world being opened up to her,
01:42the world of Penelope Featherington and beyond.
01:47You see your favourite celebrity at an exclusive industry party.
01:53Do you ask for a photo?
01:55Yes, absolutely.
01:56I am one of those people.
01:57I was at a thing last night.
01:59One of my favourite artists was there, Mariska Harkitay,
02:02and I am kicking myself that I didn't ask her for a selfie.
02:05So yes, I am that person.
02:07The Queen, I think...
02:09She secretly found girls after Whistledown.
02:12I think there's a huge respect there for Whistledown.
02:16And I think that's why she is desperate to find out.
02:20She feels that there's an alignment, I think, with her and Whistledown.
02:25A friend requests you pass along a script they've written.
02:29But upon reviewing, you determine it is terrible.
02:33What do you tell them?
02:35It's a very tricky situation, isn't it?
02:37Because you don't want to hurt the person's feelings.
02:39Although I am honest and upfront,
02:42I think birthing a child that you love and having that criticised
02:47is a very difficult, tentative road that you have to take.
02:50My wife is a playwright,
02:52so I understand the effort that goes into creating a piece of art.
02:57So I think tread carefully would be my advice and what I would do.
03:02In terms of the Queen,
03:04oh, I think she would rip it up and tear it and throw it in the bin
03:08if she didn't think it was very good.
03:09I think she's quite harsh like that.
03:11She doesn't do favours.
03:13Halfway through a delightful dinner party,
03:16you realise your neighbour has been calling you Charlotte
03:20instead of your own name.
03:22Do you correct them?
03:23It depends whether I want to be wicked or not,
03:26whether I want to have a bit of fun for myself.
03:29If I am in that mood, then I would not correct.
03:32I think knowing someone's name is really important.
03:35In terms of the Queen, I think she would correct the person.
03:40An American colleague asks you to run lines,
03:44but their British accent is abysmal.
03:48Do you say anything?
03:49Yes, I do.
03:51I would probably slip the number of a dialect coach
03:55that I thought was very good.
03:57Portraying the Queen's accent and personality comes naturally to me.
04:02My family are very, I suppose, posh is the right word to use.
04:07So that etiquette is very ingrained in me.
04:10I'm not quite sure what you believe I am to do about it.
04:14I can slip into it very easily.
04:16I know it very, very well.
04:18You're on stage and notice an audience member is texting during your show.
04:23The same person asks you for an autograph afterwards.
04:27What do you tell them?
04:29So I would be very gracious and say,
04:32did you enjoy the show?
04:34If they said, yes, I loved the show,
04:36which were your best bits of the show?
04:38Then I would ask them, who were you texting during the show?
04:42I'd do it all with a smile.
04:44In the world of Bridgerton, what would be the rude equivalent of texting?
04:49Slurping your tea or not bringing the cup to your lips.
04:56That is not acceptable.
04:59Is not acceptable.
05:00This is acceptable.
05:03A house guest you've invited decides to extend their stay without asking,
05:09which conflicts with plans of your own.
05:12How do you respond without hurting the friendship?
05:15They're not staying for another night.
05:18I mean, that's like rude.
05:21No, I would pack their bags and leave them out on the sidewalk,
05:27the front lawn or wherever.
05:28I would probably be, oh yeah,
05:30Angela Bassett in Waiting to Exhale.
05:33Get your s*** out of here.
05:38You're making casual conversation with a cocktail party guest
05:43only to realise that they are a royal.
05:46How do you recover?
05:47I don't recover.
05:48I keep going.
05:50Yes, I keep going with the chit chat.
05:52Why not?
05:53They're human beings, the same as us.
05:55I would have loved to have met the Queen.
05:58She was an icon.
05:59She was an icon in her own right.
06:01And I did actually play, I think it was called Party in the Park,
06:04when I was in We Will Rock You, the musical.
06:08Brian May played his guitar on top of the palace
06:12and there was this huge party and the Queen came and watched.
06:16The party was performed in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.
06:20I never met her then, but yeah, I think the Queen,
06:22I would have loved to have met.
06:24You're out to dinner and the restaurant sends over
06:27a very nice bottle of champagne, but it's flat.
06:31Oh.
06:31Do you still drink it?
06:33No. Why would you do that?
06:35Who's sending a flat bottle of champagne?
06:37You know what I mean?
06:38That's...
06:40No, I would send it back and ask for another.
06:43Your good friend wants to cast you in a movie and you excitedly agree.
06:47However, upon reviewing the script, you realise it is awful.
06:53How would you get out of that commitment?
06:55Oh God.
06:56I hand that over to agents and managers.
06:59That's what I pay them for.
07:00Yeah, that would be something that, yeah, would be gently done by other people.
07:06Thank you for watching me on Town & Country.
07:08Bridgerton is streaming on Netflix.
