Johnny Hodges & His Orchestra

"Burgundy Walk"

1954

On the record label, young John Coltrane (who takes no solo) is identified as "Johnny" Coltrane.

Coltrane rarely gave interviews. But he did talk to journalists at times, and to said to one or two that he looked back at his time with Hodges as valuable.

Coltrane told Down Beat magazine in 1960 that Earl Bostic "showed me a lot of things on my horn. He has fabulous technical facilities on his instrument and knows many a trick."

Next, Coltrane talked about "one of my first loves, Johnny Hodges. I really enjoyed that job. I liked every tune in the book. Nothing was superficial. It all had meaning, and it all swung. And the confidence with which Rabbit plays! I wish I could play with the confidence that he does."
