00:00Luke's new friend. The Blue Mountain Quarry is a loud and lively place, full of big, booming machines.
00:12And explosive blasts.
00:18It was nearly the end of the day, but the narrow-gauge engines of the quarry were still working hard.
00:29Going down! Next stop, the very bottom.
00:37Brace you to the crushing shed, Luke. Whoever gets down first, gets to take the first load of gravel.
00:43You're on!
00:44What was that?
01:03I'm not sure. It just ran out in front of me. It was a deer.
01:07That's right. And a young'un, too, by the look of it.
01:11Well, whatever it was, it doesn't belong down here in the quarry. It gave me a fright.
01:16You were frightened? Of a small animal?
01:20It leapt out of nowhere.
01:22Come on, everybody. It's time to wind things down. This will be the last load of the day.
01:28Oh!
01:30Don't worry, Luke. There's plenty more to do tomorrow.
01:34All this gravel needs to be taken up to Ulfstead Castle. We should all go and get a good night's rest.
01:41All the busy engines and noisy machinery at the Blue Mountain Quarry settled down for the night.
01:48But young Luke was excited about the busy day ahead. He didn't feel sleepy at all.
01:59Which was why Luke was the only one to see...
02:02The deer!
02:08Hey, come back. I won't hurt you.
02:15Hello, little fella.
02:31Luke was sad to see the young deer go, but he was very glad to have seen him up close.
02:38He didn't expect to see the deer again.
02:45So the next day, Luke was surprised to find his new friend was still around.
02:52Good morning, friend.
02:54Morning, Luke.
02:56Shh, Rudeus. Don't frighten my new friend.
03:01Honestly, Luke, the quarry is no place for an animal.
03:06Nonsense. I'm sure that once he meets everyone and sees how great it is here in the quarry, he'll love it just as much as I do.
03:15Well, I don't think that's being really useful.
03:22But Luke felt sure he could look after his new friend and still be really useful.
03:35Luke puffed as quietly as he could, but every loud noise from the work in the quarry...
03:49...made the young deer cower and crouch further down inside Luke's camp, until...
03:59Oh!
04:00The deer scampered away once more.
04:05Come back, little friend.
04:10I like your new friend, Luke. He's fun.
04:14Where are you, friend?
04:21Going down?
04:30Phew!
04:32I'm not sure the quarry is the right place for him.
04:36I think it might be a bit too noisy.
04:40All right, Owen. There's only one thing for it.
04:44We're all going to have to work more quietly.
04:48Oh, dear.
04:52The other engines were happy when they saw Luke and his new friend back together again.
04:59They wanted to help, so they all moved slowly and steadily, lifting heavy stones and shifting dusty gravel.
05:09Without making any loud noises, until...
05:15Peter Sam was trying so hard to work quietly that he wasn't watching where he was going.
05:23And then there was trouble.
05:32Sorry, Luke, but there's no way we can do our jobs properly if we're trying to be quiet.
05:38He's right, I'm afraid.
05:40It's harder to work slowly and quietly than it is to work quickly and noisily.
05:46But what about my friend?
05:48Face it, Luke. You can't be really useful and look after your friend.
05:54That deer does not belong here.
05:57He does belong here. It just takes a little while to fit in, that's all.
06:03He'll soon get used to it, just like I did.
06:08Luke, why don't you take this load of gravel to the castle?
06:12Your new friend might enjoy the journey through the park.
06:16And taking the gravel will be really useful.
06:22So Luke was hooked up to Skarloey's loaded wagons of gravel.
06:27Luke found his new friend, and together they set off, slowly, on the narrow gauge line to Ulfstead Castle.
06:37The park around the castle was very different to the Blue Mountain Quarry.
06:42The air was clear and fresh.
06:45The colours were bright and cheerful.
06:48But most of all, it was so, so quiet.
06:56The young deer loved it.
06:58The further away from the quarry Luke chuffed, the happier the deer seemed to be.
07:11Oh, look, friend. That animal looks just like you.
07:16Hey, come back.
07:19Oh, I see.
07:27That's okay, friend. Off you go.
07:39Luke was sad to say goodbye to his new friend.
07:43But he knew that the deer would be happy to see him again.
07:47But he knew that the deer would be much happier here.
07:59Look who's here. Welcome back.
08:03But where's your friend?
08:05Where he really belongs. In the park at Ulfstead Castle.
08:10Well done, Luke.
08:12You can always go back and visit him with the next load of gravel.
08:16So, you'd better get that stone moved up to the gravel crusher.
08:21Right away, Skarloey.
08:23Luke was happy that his new friend found a better place to live.
08:28And he was happy to be back with his old friends in the Blue Mountain Quarry.
08:34Making lots of noise and being really useful.
08:40The End
