Biden, Trump hold first presidential debate

Donald Trump’s backers declared victory in the first presidential debate of the 2024 presidential race, after Joe Biden's shaky, halting performance on June 27, 2024. Speaking in the media ‘spin room’ after the debate concluded in Atlanta, Georgia, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said that Biden, the Democratic candidate, had been incoherent at times and that he wondered who was making decisions in the White House. Biden’s backers, meanwhile, said that he had won on issues of substance in the debate, and that Trump had shown himself to be dishonest. Mary Trump, the former president’s niece, told reporters it would be an 'unthinkable tragedy' if Trump was re-elected. During the course of the debate, the two candidates traded barbs on abortion, immigration, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, their handling of the economy and even their golf games as they each sought to shake up what opinion polls show has been a virtually tied race for months.

00:00This is an overwhelming win on the debate stage, but most importantly, President Trump is focused on not only winning this November,
00:07but bringing success to the American people, returning to the effective policies that we saw under President Trump's first term,
00:13securing the border, unleashing American energy independence, standing up for hardworking families who have been crushed by Joe Biden's inflation
00:20from the trillions of dollars of reckless spending.
00:23When it came to anything having to do with ordinary people, he reminded us that this man wants to do the only thing that he's ever done,
00:31and that's focus on people like himself.
00:33That's why he passed a tax cut that went to the richest of the rich on the backs of ordinary working class poor people, middle class people.
00:44We passed a tax cut, the largest tax cut for middle and working class people in American history.
00:50He's trying to divide us, and we've got to make sure that we stand up as a nation, stand up for the American covenant.
00:58He pulled us out of many, one, and we should always be afraid of somebody who's telling us to be afraid of each other.
01:06To be frank, there were times I couldn't understand what he was saying.
01:13Thank God we had that closed caption.
01:15I don't know how those guys did it, but there were times I couldn't understand what he was saying, to be fair.
01:19Maybe he was saying something brilliant and very astute, but I couldn't understand it.
01:25I think that was a problem.
01:26Look, I think voters saw it.
01:27I don't think there's any spinning out of it.
01:29Again, I think it's a dangerous thing for our country, but I want to go back to the core.
01:34The core of this is the country was better off when Trump was president.
01:37Whether you like everything he says or not, that's the bottom line.
01:40That's how most Americans are going to end up voting is who are they better off on.
01:43I also worry about who's actually calling the shots in the White House.
01:47It's hard to believe that the man I saw on stage tonight—look, I didn't serve with Joe Biden in the Senate,
01:52but I was around when he was vice president.
01:54I even watched a video today of four years ago to today.
01:57It's just painfully obvious.
01:59Again, I don't want to be cruel about it.
02:00It's just the reality, but I do worry that our adversaries will read into it, that they can make decisions.
02:06You have to ask yourself, who's actually making decisions on a daily basis in the White House?
02:10Because I don't think the person we saw tonight could be involved in the details of governing at this point from what I saw.
02:16The substance of the issue is simple.
02:19We have somebody that is bragging about the fact that he took Roe v. Wade away from us,
02:25whereas we know the next step.
02:28They've gone after Mephistopheles.
02:29They want to go after contraception, and unfortunately in the state of Texas,
02:33they're talking about instituting the death penalty.
02:36What the American people have to decide is that they're going to choose themselves.
02:40This election isn't about all of the lies that Trump is selling you.
02:45What it's about is the facts.
02:47The facts are that he took that right away from us, and he wants to take more rights away from us.
02:57I think there are probably 10 to 15 percent of American voters who have not made up their mind.
03:04If you were watching this debate, you're voting for Donald Trump.
03:07It's one of the greatest contrasts between two politicians I've ever seen in my life.
03:13The dominance of Donald Trump was undeniable.
03:17That's why the Joe Biden camp started putting out that he had a cult.
03:20They're looking for a way to cover the tracks before the debate was over.
03:24That is a telltale sign, undeniably.
03:27If we are unfortunate enough to put him in the White House again in 2024,
03:32it would be an unthinkable tragedy.
03:35This man has one policy position, and it's to keep himself out of prison.
03:40We saw tonight that he does nothing but lie.
03:43Do not let the fact that he lies loudly and with impunity blind you to the fact
03:49that he is a traitor to this country.
03:53We have seen him betray this country,
03:56and we know that the people who know him best cannot support him because of that.
04:04I've known Donald Trump all of my life.
04:07He's the same man now as he was when I was a child.
04:11He's incapable of changing, and if we let him anywhere near the levers of power again,
04:21that would be one of the worst mistakes this country could ever make,
04:25and I believe at that point the American experiment would be over.
04:29We must re-elect President Joe Biden.
