00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studios.
00:35Extraordinary report floating around at the moment that says that the planet's wildernesses
00:40could actually disappear over the next century.
00:44I guess I'm not talking about the deserts and the great sort of areas of Antarctica and the Arctic,
00:49but more about the sort of great areas in Brazil and South America, perhaps,
00:55that are being cleared of trees for the cattle farms.
00:59You've travelled, I think, in Brazil quite a lot.
01:02Did you see any evidence of anything that's being done to stop the deforestation
01:06or to, you know, preserve the environment down there?
01:09Yeah, actually, the place I stayed is my favourite place on Earth and it was a huge cattle ranch
01:13and the person that owned it designated quite a large portion of the land
01:17as a government special ring-fenced area so that even when he passed it through his generations
01:22you weren't allowed to build on it, so it's specifically for wildlife.
01:25And he's invited the Hyacinth Macaw Project onto there to do their work and their research
01:31as well as Oncafari, which is a jaguar conservation project.
01:35Ah, OK.
01:36But there are just Hyacinth Macaws everywhere. It was just fabulous.
01:39As soon as you showed up, and they're the biggest type of parrot,
01:42I think they're over a metre long, bright blue, they mate at about seven years old maybe
01:47and then they stay with their partner for life.
01:49And they're doing all kinds of research and learning things that they just had no idea about
01:53from this project.
01:54Extraordinary.
01:55And they're flourishing.
01:56And it's great that, yeah, even when he passes it on to his kids or wherever it goes
01:59it's always going to be designated as an area for nature.
02:02Well, good for him because apparently according to this report
02:041.3 million square miles of wilderness has disappeared in the last 25 years.
02:09We've got to sort of slow these things down, I guess.
02:12Yeah, so nice for people that have got the opportunity, got the money
02:15to actually protect something and give something back.
02:18Absolutely right.
02:19Great.
02:20Absolutely right.
02:21Elliot Mack is back, administrative assistant from Reigate.
02:25Got a great 103 points in his first win.
02:28Well done.
02:29Good luck to you today, Elliot Mack.
02:31You're joined by Daniel Webster, a part-time DJ from Birmingham.
02:35Loves playing bingo, plays four times a week.
02:38Yes, I've done quite well out of it.
02:40I've had a flurry of a couple of wins over the years, a couple of hundred here and there
02:43but I'm still chasing the big jackpot.
02:45Oh, let's hope for you.
02:46When singing Sister Act at karaoke...
02:49Yeah.
02:50..you decided to be dressed as a nun.
02:52Yeah, when I go on stage I like to attire different, like, outfits
02:57and the stage collapsed on me and I broke my leg whilst performing.
03:01All the fun of the family.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Well, big round of applause then for Sister Act and Elliot Mack.
03:08Daniel Webster.
03:11And over the corner, Susie, of course, and we're so glad he's here
03:15because he's a knockout guest.
03:16He truly is a knockout guest.

08:26He charges at the entrance, he hopes to get in without a ticket.
08:39APPLAUSE
08:46Warm welcome back.
08:48After the clue, he charges at the entrance,
08:50he hopes to get in without a ticket.
08:52And the answer to that one is that he gatecrashes it.
08:56Gatecrash.
08:57He's a gatecrasher.
08:59So, it's 22-22.

10:30To disabuse.
10:31So, I disabused him of his notions.
10:33Yeah.
10:34That is to persuade somebody that they're mistaken.
10:36Disabuse. Well done.
10:42Well done, guys. Well done.
10:4429 plays 22.
10:45Daniel's leapt to a seven-point lead.

12:11Very good. Well done.
12:12We're back level-pegging at 29.
12:14Now, then, Barry.
12:15Barry's looking quite pleased with himself.
12:17What have you got there?
12:18Yeah.
12:19Bodies, as in chip bodies.
12:21Or bacon buddies, even better.
12:23Bacon buddies is right, yeah.
12:24Brilliant. Perfect. Bacon buddy.
12:2629 apiece.
12:27Daniel, your numbers game.
12:29OK. Can I have one from the top and five little ones, please?
12:31You can. Thank you, Daniel. One large, five little.
12:34See if this can break the deadlock between you two.
12:36The five small ones are nine, six, ten, three and ten.
12:44And the big one, 25.
12:47And the target to reach, 399.
12:49399.
12:51CLOCK TICKS
13:00CLOCK TICKS
13:21Now, then, Daniel.
13:23399.
13:25399, Elliot?
13:27399.
13:28399, Daniel?
13:30Yeah, ten plus six is 16.
13:32Yep.
13:33Times 25 is 400.
13:35Yep.
13:36Ten minus nine is one.
13:37Yep.
13:38And take that away from the 400.
13:39Lovely.
13:40Very briskly done.
13:41And, Elliot?
13:42Exactly the same way.
13:43There we go. Just check that.
13:45Well done.
13:46APPLAUSE
13:48So, clinging on to each other,
13:513,900 apiece as we turn to Barry.
13:54Barry, last time we spoke about your film career back in the 90s.
13:58But you haven't finished with films.
14:00No, you tend to attract people who want to do boxing movies.
14:05And we've just recently finished a movie with a guy called Johnny Harris,
14:09a small arthouse movie.
14:11It's a sad story, as most boxing stories are.
14:14And we've just finished it, and it's coming out very shortly.
14:18And Johnny trained for a year, and he's part of our camp.
14:21He's come to all our fights.
14:23But he was an ABA champion back in the 80s himself.
14:27What was your role then?
14:28You were training him, or...?
14:30Yeah, well, I didn't train as much.
14:32The boys trained him.
14:33What I did was I oversaw the choreography to make it look real
14:38and look at the edits and make sure the edits are good.
14:42And if they're not, we just make them better.
14:44Because you'd normally do several sort of takes of one sequence of punches,
14:49so you have several options to pick from.
14:52And that's a very important job.
14:53Doing the editing is crucial.
14:56What you do is you'll have a sequence of punches,
14:59and it's slipping, coming back with a left hook or a right hand,
15:02or rolling and coming back with a right hand, left hook, or whatever.
15:07And so that all has to be done absolutely meticulously,
15:11or somebody gets hit with a good punch.
15:14But it was great, and there was lots of punches that sunk in
15:18that shouldn't have sunk in.
15:19So that invariably happens when you're under pressure for time.
15:22It's certainly exciting. It's called, what, Jawbone?
15:24Jawbone, yeah.
15:25Well, we look forward to it, and I hope it does a storm for you.
15:28So do I.
15:29Brilliant stuff. Lovely.
15:34Well done.
15:3539 apiece, and it's Elliot's letters game. Elliot.
15:38Thank you.
15:39A consonant, please, Rachel.
15:41Thank you, Elliot. R.
15:43And a vowel, please.
15:45B.
15:46And a consonant, please.
15:48D.
15:50And another vowel.
15:52U.
15:54And another consonant, please.
15:56W.
15:58And another vowel, please.
16:01I.
16:03Another consonant, please.
16:05C.
16:07And a consonant.
16:09N.
16:11And a final consonant, please.
16:14And lastly, Q.
16:16Stand by.
16:47Elliot.
16:49Six.
16:50Daniel.
16:51Just a six on that one.
16:53All right. Elliot.
16:55Winced.
16:56Winced and Daniel.
16:58I've got a winder.
16:59A winder? Why not?
17:01Absolutely fine.
17:02Winced.
17:04I bet old Barry's winced to get all people winced from time to time.
17:08Indeed I did.
17:09What else have we got?
17:11Unwired.
17:12Yes.
17:13Yep.
17:14That would give me a seven.
17:16And an alternative six would be quired.
17:19So that's used of medieval manuscripts that are made up of quires.
17:23That's sheets of paper folded together to make eight leaves.
17:26Sure.
17:27Thank you.
17:28So 45 apiece.
17:30Daniel, your letters game.
17:32Thank you very much.
17:33Can I have a consonant, please?
17:35Thank you, Daniel. R.
17:37I'll have a vowel, please.
17:39U.
17:40A consonant.
17:42T.
17:43A consonant.
17:45D.
17:47Another consonant, please.
17:49X.
17:51A vowel.
17:53E.
17:55Another vowel.
17:57A.
17:59A consonant.
18:01M.
18:02And another consonant, please.
18:04And the last one. T.
18:06Dumbo.
18:14BUZZER
18:38Yes, Daniel?
18:39Just a six on that one.
18:41A six and...?
18:42And a seven. Daniel?
18:43Yeah, a matter on that one.
18:45Thank you.
18:46Matured.
18:47And matured.
18:49Anything else?
18:50Mutated.
18:51Yeah. That gives you another seven.
18:53Mutated. Very good.
18:5452 plays 45 and that gives Elliot his breakaway
18:59as we turn now to numbers.
19:02Numbers and Elliot again.
19:04One large and five small again, please.
19:06Thank you, Elliot. One large one, five little ones.
19:09And this time around they are four.
19:12One, two.
19:14Another one, five.
19:16And a large one, 25.
19:18And the target, 381.
19:20381.
19:40BUZZER
19:53Yes, Elliot?
19:55384.
19:57Three away. How about Daniel?
19:59I'm going to try 380.
20:01380. OK. Try it.
20:03Two plus one is three.
20:05Yep.
20:06Times five is 15.
20:07It is indeed.
20:0825.
20:09375.
20:10Add on the four and the one.
20:12And the other one. Perfect for your one away, yeah.
20:14380.
20:15Well done, Daniel. Well done.
20:17But still one away.
20:19381, Rachel. How tricky is that?
20:21It was there. If you say 25 times five.
20:25One, two, five.
20:27Add two for one, two, seven.
20:29And then four minus one is three and times them together.
20:33Well done. Very good.
20:35APPLAUSE
20:38Thank you very much. We're back here to a neck-and-neck job.
20:4152 plays 52 as we turn to our second tea-time teaser,
20:45which is a mend mild.
20:48And the clue, if you go straight to the head, you can cut him out.
20:52If you go straight to the head, you can cut him out.
20:55BELL
21:04APPLAUSE
21:09Welcome back, welcome back.
21:11I left with the clue, if you go straight to the head,
21:14you can cut him out.
21:16And the answer to that, of course, is middleman.
21:19Cut out the middleman.
21:2152 apiece and it's Daniel's letters game. Daniel?
21:24Yeah, consonant, please.
21:25Thank you, Daniel.

21:53And lastly, R.
21:55Stand by.
22:07BELL
22:28Daniel?
22:29I'll try a nine.
22:31Mm-hm. Elliot?
22:33I'll try a nine as well.
22:35Yeah, ordainers.
22:37And...? Ordainers.
22:39Now, let's speak to the, er...
22:42..the Delphic Oracle over there.
22:44The guru.
22:46Well, the dictionary's the guru and the dictionary says yes.
22:48Well done.
22:54Two very good players.
22:56And your nine, Susie and Barry?
22:59Yes, Susie's got it again. Reordains.
23:01Oh, you've got one. Reordains. Brilliant.
23:04Well done, indeed. Thank you.
23:07Now, what we've got here are two very good players.
23:10Look, 70 apiece, they're clinging on to each other
23:13and it's Elliot's letters game now. Elliot.
23:16Consonant, please, Rachel.
23:18Thank you, Elliot. T

24:28Thank you. And...
24:29Photon.
24:30Photon.
24:32Yes, photon, you will find.
24:35It is a particle representing a quantum of light
24:39or other electromagnetic radiation.
24:41Photon.
24:42Very good.
24:43Now, what else have we got in the corner there, Barry and Susie?
24:47We have footman.
24:49Yes.
24:50Seven.
24:51And phenom.
24:53Yes.
24:54Phenom.
24:55Phenom, yeah. Short for phenomenon
24:58and fits Barry perfectly.
25:00A person who is outstandingly talented or admired.
25:03Indeed.
25:04Phenom.
25:0576 to 70.
25:07See Elliot springing into a lead again.
25:10Susie, give them a rest
25:12while you deliver your brilliant origins of words.
25:16Well, I'm going to get a bit exotic today,
25:19and you might not think so, because I'm going to talk about algebra
25:22and algorithms and chemistry,
25:25which we don't particularly see as being, well, particularly glamorous.
25:29But if you look back to ancient history,
25:31they were, in a way, because they both were all, I should say,
25:34started as Arabic words.
25:36Algebra, for example, was algebra.
25:38Alchemia was chemistry.
25:41And they all came from the Arab civilisation
25:44in what's now modern-day Iraq.
25:46Their roots actually began with the prefix al-
25:49which is the only definite article in Arabic,
25:51simply meaning the.
25:53So almanac, for example, comes from the Arabic al-manak,
25:57which simply means the calendar.
25:59And alcohol comes, one of my favourite etymologies,
26:03comes from al-khol.
26:05Al-khol was a black metallic powder that was used as an eyeliner.
26:09Of course, we still keep that second part, khol, today.
26:13But it was obtained via a process called sublimation,
26:16which was the basis of alchemy,
26:18and that's when a powder or a solid is heated.
26:21And the word evolved to mean anything obtained by this method of sublimation,
26:26and it was known as a quintessence.
26:28And the quintessence of wine was al-khol, alcohol.
26:32And by the 18th century,
26:34alcohol itself had come to mean that intoxicating component of strong liquor.
26:39But I'll just finish with another favourite,
26:41and that is the word alcatraz, famous, of course, for other things,
26:45but that's from the Spanish and Portuguese word for pelican,
26:48straight from the Arabic al-qaduz.
26:50And that refers to the bucket of water, or a bucket, really,
26:54and it was in an irrigation wheel,
26:56so the water-raising part of an irrigation wheel.
26:58And it was said to refer to the way that a pelican scoops water into its beak
27:03in order to transport the water to its young in the desert.
27:06I absolutely love that. So alcatraz simply means pelican.
27:09Oh, brilliant. Well done.
27:15Very good. You can see it, can't you, scooping it up?
27:17Yeah. Thank you.
27:19Very good. And it's Daniel's letters game. Daniel?

30:08I think I've got a six.
30:10A six. Nervin, Daniel?
30:12Just a four. That's four.
30:14Elliot? Latino?
30:16I think that would be there with a small L,
30:19just there with a capital letter, I'm afraid,
30:21which means we can't allow it.
30:23Sorry about that.
30:25Wow, that changes things.
30:27Over in the corner?
30:29Hot link.
30:31Hot link. Yes.
30:33Hot link in computing terms.
30:35So, yeah, links between documents.
30:37That would give you a seven.
30:39Very good indeed. All right, so we're moving into the final numbers game
30:43with a crucial conundrum grinning at us from the distance.
30:46Daniel?
30:48I'll have one from the top and five small ones, please.
30:50Thank you, Daniel. One large, five small.
30:52And a possible... Another crucial conundrum for Elliot.
30:55Let's see. The last number in this game of the day is six,
30:58eight, nine,
31:00four, another eight,
31:02and 100.
31:04And the target...

31:43I'm nowhere near.
31:45No? No. Sorry.
31:47Wow.
31:49All right, Daniel.
31:51Four times eight is 32.
31:54Four eights 32.
31:56Six times 100 is 600.
31:59Yep.
32:01Then add on from the 32 the nine and the eight on the top there.
32:04So 32... Yep.
32:06..plus eight, plus nine...
32:08..is 49. 49, yep.
32:10And one away, 551.
32:12So, Rach, we turn to you. 550?
32:14Yeah, one way you could have said
32:16eight plus eight, 16,
32:18plus six, 22,
32:20times by 100,
32:22for 2,200,
32:24and then divide it by four.
32:26Well done indeed.
32:31So, Elliot, that was a bit of a slip, but you're still in the game.
32:3582 plays 87, five points in it.
32:38That means that we come into a crucial countdown conundrum.
32:41Fingers on buzzers.
32:43What is today's crucial countdown conundrum?
33:01Elliot?
33:03Memorised.
33:05Memorised.
33:07Memorised. Whoa!
33:16What's it with you and crucial countdown conundrums, young man?
33:20I'm trying to avoid them.
33:22Well, this one's done you a lot of good.
33:24Look, Daniel was all over you, really, at the very end.
33:27But there he is.
33:2992 to 87, you win the day.
33:32Daniel, back to Birmingham... Back to Birmingham.

34:04It certainly was. It certainly was.
34:06All right, see you next time. See you then.
34:08Join us then, you'll be sure of it.
34:10And a very good afternoon to you all.
34:29So what happens if you let Johnny Vegas loose on Countdown
34:32before you go to Ten Cats? Well, you can find out tonight at nine.
34:35And then straight after at ten, David Tennant doesn't need a TARDIS,
34:38just a sofa, as the first guest in the brand-new series of The Last Leg.
34:42Next, though, slogging it out for a new life in the sun.
