00:00More than 50 ships and 20 planes have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle since the middle of the 19th century.
00:07This region isn't put on any paper map and is not an official region of the Atlantic.
00:13This massive water area is located not far from the southeastern coast of the U.S. and still scares many sailors.
00:20But you aren't afraid and want to prove that there is nothing special in this place.
00:25You sail to the center of the Bermuda Triangle on a small fishing boat.
00:29You turn off the engine and wait.
00:34Several hours pass. The sun goes below the horizon. Night comes.
00:39You're about to return to the shore, but suddenly it becomes too quiet.
00:44Then you hear a splash of water. You look overboard and see hundreds of fish swimming to the surface.
00:51Something big scared them away. Something that comes straight from the depths.
00:57The next second, you notice big sparkling eyes and long tentacles reaching for the boat.
01:03It seems that one of the most terrible myths about the Bermuda Triangle turned out to be true.
01:08A huge squid dragging ships to the bottom.
01:12Stories about these squids appeared long before the emergence of the Bermuda Triangle myths.
01:17For centuries, sailors from Norway and Greenland told stories about a scary sea monster, the Kraken.
01:24In those stories, the Kraken broke the decks of ships with its giant tentacles and dragged them to the bottom.
01:30The approach of this creature is impossible to see since it's coming to you not from the side, but from below.
01:37But all these were just stories.
01:39Only in the 19th century, scientific evidence of the existing of these monsters appeared.
01:44A beak of an unknown squid was found on the coast of Denmark.
01:48The size of the find was about 3 inches in diameter, which is about the size of a human palm.
01:54Then, it became clear that the Kraken was real, and it's just one variety of giant squid.
02:00Since then, more than 21 species of giant squid have been described.
02:04But the first video with this monster was recorded in 2004 in the waters of North Atlantic.
02:10Not far from the Bermuda Triangle, marine biologists used a lure to draw the squid out of the depths.
02:16The huge monster was about 30 feet long, which is about half a subway car.
02:21It suddenly appeared out of the ocean darkness and quickly attacked the lure, squeezing it with its tentacles.
02:27After that, many cases of squid have been recorded on photos and video.
02:32Huge squids were washed up on the shore, swam past ships.
02:36According to some records, the largest monster ever found was 59 feet long and weighed almost a ton.
02:43This is the size of a big bus.
02:45Some scientists believe that giant squids can reach 150 feet in length, which is almost twice the size of a basketball court.
02:53But the big size is not enough to sink a ship.
02:56The first thing that helps squids do this is the surprise effect.
02:59Squids come from the depths, which mean they can be seen from the deck.
03:03But the monster can see a boat from afar.
03:06It has the biggest eyes in the world.
03:08One eye is about the size of a basketball.
03:11The eyesight of a giant squid allows them to see prey in the black sea depths and from a big distance.
03:17Most sea creatures on the planet can't see in such conditions.
03:20So, the squid notices your ship and decides that it's food.
03:24It quickly approaches the boat and attacks with its tentacles.
03:28The squid has eight limbs and two extra longer tentacles the monster uses to bring food to the beak-shaped mouth.
03:34The others are covered with dozens of suction cups filled with sharp teeth.
03:38Nothing can escape if the squid grabs it.
03:41The squid wraps its tentacles around your boat.
03:44With the teeth on each arm, it bites the deck.
03:47Two long tentacles can grab you while you're running around in panic.
03:50The squid can rock the ship from side to side until one of its parts sinks in the water.
03:55You fight off two long tentacles and fall off your feet.
03:59The squid's eight arms are squeezing stronger.
04:02You can hear the boat's hull cracking.
04:04The squid is big, but still can't sink a large metal object.
04:08Possibly, it couldn't have sunk huge ships that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
04:13You see how the squid swims away into the depths.
04:16You're lucky this time, but you definitely wouldn't handle two such monsters.
04:21The existence of giant squids was proven more than 150 years ago.
04:25But people still don't know anything about them.
04:28The fact is that they are some of the most elusive creatures on Earth.
04:31They swim fast, spending most of their time at depths of 1,300 to 3,000 feet.
04:36To descend there, people need sturdy submarines and bulky equipment that create a lot of noise.
04:41The squid will notice them much earlier and swim away.
04:45Hmm, can we estimate how many ships and airplanes were lost in the Bermuda Triangle?
04:50Have their disappearances resulted from human error or weather phenomena?
04:54Let's try to find out.
04:56We have a curious story of the SS Cotopaxi.
04:59This ship vanished in 1925, traveling from Charleston, South Carolina, to Havana, Cuba.
05:06It never reached its destination.
05:09Years later, in the 1980s, a wreck was found 40 miles off St. Augustine, Florida.
05:15Since specialists could not precisely determine what and where it came from, they nicknamed it Bear Wreck.
05:22It took many additional years of work, done mainly by marine biologists,
05:27to identify that this ship was indeed the missing SS Cotopaxi.
05:32This was confirmed in January 2020.
05:35How did the ship just reappear?
05:38And how did it get there, since this mysterious shipwreck isn't even in the Bermuda Triangle?
05:44Now, let's see who came up with this term, Bermuda Triangle.
05:48Can you actually pinpoint the triangle on a map?
05:51No, it's not an officially recognized location either.
05:55The Bermuda Triangle does not appear on any world map.
05:59Nobody has agreed on its exact boundaries.
06:02There are only assumptions with approximations of the entire area,
06:06ranging between 500,000 and 1.5 million square miles.
06:11By all approximations, the region has a vaguely triangular shape.
06:16In 1964, an American author named Vincent Hayes Gaddis
06:21first came up with the idea when writing an article for Argosy magazine.
06:26He used the Bermuda Triangle to describe a triangular region
06:30that has destroyed hundreds of ships and planes without a trace.
06:35It is pretty hard to get the number of lost ships and planes
06:38because some ships and aircraft have gone missing without leaving a trace.
06:43Their wreckage in the region has not been recovered.
06:46But the recorded story should help us.
06:49Legends about the Bermuda Triangle date back to the 15th century,
06:53like that of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.
06:57When sailing through the Atlantic waters, he passed by this location in the late 1400s.
07:02In what we now know as the Bermuda Triangle,
07:05he saw a huge flame that seemed to just crash into the ocean.
07:10Later, he saw an unusual light flashing in the distance at the exact location.
07:15Like many other sailors since then, his compass had severe malfunctions.
07:20Flight 19, a Navy plane on a routine schedule back in 1945,
07:25also started the Bermuda Triangle legend.
07:28It was commanded by Lieutenant Charles Taylor,
07:31and it's recorded that he just got lost in the triangle for no reason.
07:35Since pilots had no GPS back then, they had to trust their compasses
07:40and keep track of how long they'd been flying in a specific direction and their speed.
07:45Shortly after completing the task, both of the compasses on board stopped working correctly.
07:51Records found after the plane's disappearance
07:54also indicate that Taylor didn't have a watch on that particular day.
07:58The initial report stated that pilot error was to blame for this unfortunate event.
08:04However, because people weren't satisfied with this outcome,
08:08it was changed to causes or reasons unknown after several reviews.
08:14One surviving pilot named Bruce Guerin suggested he went through an electronic fog
08:19while passing above the triangle, making him travel through time.
08:24In 1970, when this incident happened, he was flying his aircraft
08:29when it was surrounded by two huge clouds that formed a whirlpool and spiraled.
08:34Like many others before him, he noticed that his navigation devices were malfunctioning.
08:39When he eventually made it out of those clouds,
08:42he discovered that his flight had only taken 35 minutes.
08:46It should have taken 75 in total.
08:49Since he had no other reasonable explanation for what he went through,
08:53he believed he must have been pushed forward in time.
08:57If you draw up a map, trace a line connecting the island of Bermuda,
09:01Puerto Rico, Miami, and back to Bermuda, what do you get?
09:06The infamous triangle, known for swallowing thousands of ships and aircraft over the centuries.
09:13But there's a new mystery to this already enigmatic place.
09:17Something's lurking deep in the waters below, and it's leaving bizarre clues of its existence.
09:24Splash! Your submarine hits the water's surface.
09:28You descend 100, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 feet.
09:33It's getting darker. The sub's walls creak as the pressure grows.
09:38Over 1,400 psi, it's like the weight of a grand piano squeezing every square inch of your body from all sides.
09:47You've made it to your destination. All that's left is to spot the beast.
09:54Just in time. Among the black void, you see a bright green glow off in the distance.
10:00It's getting closer. As it approaches, it gets bigger.
10:04This is it! The creature that's been leaving strange circular markings on fish, dolphins, whales, and even other sharks.
10:13Behold! The cookie-cutter shark!
10:16Don't let its size fool you. It may be no longer than a bowling pin, but this creature is a parasite.
10:23It attaches itself to other marine animals using its neatly arranged serrated teeth.
10:29With one bite, it fills its belly, detaches, and goes on about its day.
10:35Its mobile snack also swims away with its life.
10:40The only evidence of this rendezvous, a cookie-shaped mark on its body.
10:46Don't assume you're safe in your submarine. These bold little guys have been known to go after subs, too.
10:53You decide not to risk the shark punching a hole in the only thing keeping you from being squished to a pulp by the surrounding water.
11:01You journey on to meet other bizarre creatures lurking in the Bermuda Triangle.
11:07At twice the depth, you'll find the dragonfish.
11:11Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, these things produce light in the infrared range.
11:17Blue and green is what other fish stick to.
11:20This gives the dragonfish a huge advantage.
11:24It provides itself with light that other marine dwellers just can't perceive.
11:29Things that want to eat the dragonfish can't detect this light, as well as the critters the dragonfish likes to feed on.
11:37A truly unique deep-sea dweller is the vampire squid.
11:41Neither vampire nor squid, or octopus, this thing is a unique species of its own.
11:48It has the largest eyes compared to body size of any animal on the entire planet.
11:54When the vampire squid feels threatened, it curls its arms up and around its body.
12:00Essentially, the thing turns itself inside out.
12:04Another animal to avoid down here is the terrifying bobbit worm.
12:09It buries itself in the seafloor, leaving a small part of its body out.
12:14It waits for dinner time with its pincer-like mouth parts open.
12:19What's on the menu? Other worms and fish that can be seven times bigger than the bobbit.
12:25It uses its five antennas to sense when lunch is close enough to snap.
12:31In an instant, the worm launches forward and grabs its lunch with its mouth parts.
12:37It's not done yet.
12:39Once it's got its jaws locked onto its lunch, the worm injects it with venom and pulls it down into the burrow to feast.
12:47One of the deepest trenches in the Bermuda Triangle is the Tongue of the Ocean.
12:52This is also the secret breeding grounds of tiger sharks.
12:56You'll instantly recognize them thanks to those darker gray tiger stripes on their sides.
13:02They're the second largest predatory shark species after the great white.
13:06And with a big size comes a big appetite.
13:10Marine mammals, smaller sharks, stingrays, and green turtles are all on the menu.
13:17If you ever come face-to-face with a tiger shark, hopefully not, remember this.
13:22You can tell the fish's age by looking at its stripes.
13:26They fade over time, so the younger the shark, the more pronounced its stripes.
13:31More than 50 ships and 20 planes have disappeared here since the middle of the 19th century.
13:37You won't find this place using an ordinary paper map since it's not an official region of the Atlantic Ocean.
13:43It's just a small area of water in the shape of a triangle located not far from the southeastern coast of the U.S.
13:51In the 20th century, this place became a legend.
13:54Some believe it's home to a secret base.
13:57Others are positive it's a time portal.
13:59Ships get caught in a strong storm and move to the past or the future.
14:04There's also a theory that the city of Atlantis is located right under the Bermuda Triangle.
14:10Its technologies create bursts of energy and destroy ships.
14:14Even airplanes have a chance to disappear in this area.
14:18All this has gone so far that if something strange happens in the ocean,
14:22everyone thinks it's somehow connected with the Bermuda Triangle.
14:26The fear of the triangle has been made popular through books and movies.
14:30Directors, writers, and journalists like to use this theme.
14:34But in their works, you only see a few correct answers.
14:39You can find the truth about this place yourself if you look closely.
14:43But first, let's refute the weakest theories.
14:47Space objects, Atlantis, time travel.
14:50All these myths appeared in the middle of the 20th century.
14:53There weren't any records about mysterious phenomena before this time.
14:57People just noted that a lot of ships were sinking here.
15:00But then, one author wrote a book about Atlantis lying in the waters of the triangle.
15:05The author didn't provide any evidence, but he described this hypothesis very convincingly.
15:11People read it and liked it.
15:13The human psyche likes to read something secret.
15:17When you learn something that no one knows about, it makes you feel special.
15:21And of course, you begin to believe in this secret.
15:24So, this was one reason why the Bermuda Triangle book has become so popular.
15:29It brought the author a lot of money.
15:31And other people also wanted to enrich themselves the same way.
15:35Some other fantastic theories about time travel and secret bases have appeared since then.
15:41After that, people started making documentaries.
15:44All those works devoted to the mystical nature of the triangle were based not on real facts, but on theories from other books.
15:52It's impossible to find the truth in this chaos.
15:55Some people like to learn secrets, even if they're fake.
15:59But you can always find the truth if you really want.
16:02Just take any myth and try to find sources proving its reality.
16:06Most likely, you'll find nothing but non-scientific books and movies.
16:11There are also more realistic things about the triangle, but they are no less interesting.
16:16One hypothesis says that ships disappear there because of methane.
16:20Deposits of this gas are under the seabed of this region.
16:24Sometimes it releases from there and rises to the surface.
16:27As soon as methane comes into contact with water, it takes the form of giant bubbles.
16:33Then these bubbles foam the water and create large waves that flip the ships.
16:38This theory is quite real, and such a natural phenomenon exists, but not in the Bermuda Triangle.
16:45None of the numerous studies have confirmed the presence of an increased concentration of this gas here.
16:51The last methane eruption occurred here about 15,000 years ago.
16:56Another realistic theory is rogue waves.
16:59They form without storms and winds.
17:02The calm water's surface can transform into a big wave the height of a five-story building in three seconds.
17:09It sinks the ship and then quickly disappears.
17:12The sea is calm again, as if there were no waves at all.
17:16Some scientists believe a surface sea current colliding with a strong headwind creates this phenomenon.
17:22But some recorded cases involved no wind.
17:25Another version says the wave is born thanks to the collision of warm and cold currents.
17:31But the most exciting theory talks about kinetic vampirism that forms the waves.
17:37Under certain natural conditions, waves get the ability to exchange kinetic energy.
17:42And among all the waves, there will be the biggest, the vampire one.
17:47It absorbs the energy from all the others.
17:50When the power is accumulated, the vampire wave splashes it out.
17:54This explains the force of the impact and its sudden disappearance.
17:58All theories seem logical, but scientists still can't figure out the nature of this phenomenon.
18:04Yes, rogue waves can carry ships underwater, but not only in the Bermuda Triangle.
18:10They rarely appear in all the waters of the world's oceans.
18:14So let's move on to the next theory.
18:17Some of those who sailed through this place reported their navigation devices had become unstable.
18:23The compass and electronics broke down.
18:25The signal and radio communications were lost.
18:28We need to look at the triangle from space to find out the reason.
18:32If you use special sensors and devices, you'll see that the Earth's magnetic field is weakened above the Bermuda Triangle.
18:39This field is a shield that protects us from solar radiation.
18:43The ISS astronauts said that the triangle gets more of the sun's particles than any other part of the planet.
18:50Therefore, electronics are unstable in this area.
18:54That's it for today.
