Ano nga ba ang nutrition deficiency at paano maiiwasan ang pagkakaroon ng mababang nutrisyon?

Transcript
00:00Let's talk about one of the biggest problems in our society.
00:03This is Nutrition Deficiency or Malnutrition.
00:06But before that, let's watch this first.
00:10According to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund or UNICEF,
00:15this year, almost every day, more than 75 children die in the Philippines
00:22because of malnutrition.
00:24Because in many communities, especially in rural and depressed areas,
00:29the amount of food that they eat is often not enough
00:34which results in incomplete intake of important vitamins and minerals
00:39that our body and health needs.
00:43The occurrence of Nutrition Deficiency or Malnutrition
00:47can be the cause of various types of diseases and complications.
00:51So let's find out how we can maintain
00:55enough nutrition in our body here in CINEDOC.
01:01And to give us free telemedicine,
01:04we will talk to the Medical Nutrition Specialist,
01:08Dr. Maricar Esculto-Khanna.
01:10Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines, Doc.
01:14Hello, good morning to everyone.
01:17And also happy Nutrition Month.
01:19July is Nutrition Month.
01:20So our topic for this morning is just right.
01:23Happy Nutrition Month, Doctora.
01:25This is Prof. Fie together with Audrey.
01:27For those who are familiar with our RSP,
01:30what is Nutrition Deficiency?
01:35Okay, so Prof. Fie, when we say Nutrition Deficiency,
01:39basically, what this means is the lack of what we call nutrients.
01:44So that includes both the micronutrients,
01:47where vitamins and minerals are included,
01:50and also the macronutrients,
01:53our carbohydrates, protein, and fat,
01:56which are both important for the health of our body.
02:00So when you say malnutrition,
02:02actually, it is more of a general term.
02:04Malnutrition includes both excess nutrition and deficiency.
02:12So malnutrition also includes obesity and overweight.
02:17But if we are just talking about deficiency,
02:20it includes undernutrition, specific micronutrients,
02:24or electrolyte deficiency.
02:27Well, nowadays, Prof. Fie, there are a lot of resources,
02:30a lot of work.
02:32We can't imagine that there are still cases like this.
02:34But in some cases, in remote areas or provinces,
02:39what are the different types of Nutrition Deficiency, Doctora?
02:45So one of the most common,
02:47if you are talking about deficiencies,
02:49is undernutrition.
02:50So it includes energy deficiency,
02:56or what we call calories,
02:57and it can also be protein deficiency.
03:00Or they can both exist at the same time.
03:03So that is what we call protein energy malnutrition.
03:08So maybe when we are studying,
03:09you are familiar with the terms
03:11quassar core and merasmus.
03:14So those are the severe manifestations
03:16of protein energy malnutrition.
03:18Those are the ones you can see in the representation,
03:21the skinny kids, old man facies.
03:24Then there are also those who are on the rise
03:26because they lack protein.
03:29Then there are also specific vitamins
03:32and micronutrient deficiencies.
03:33So that includes iron deficiency
03:36and other types of vitamin deficiency.
03:39There.
03:40To limit it, from a layman's perspective,
03:44when we say malnutrition,
03:45it's like, this is the skinny kid,
03:47so he's skinny, but when it comes to him, he's big.
03:50Others, they get sick really quickly.
03:54So doc, what are the main symptoms
03:57of malnutrition that our RSPs should monitor?
04:04When it comes to macronutrient or protein deficiency,
04:06you can see it right away.
04:08It's visible.
04:09So you can see that there is a loss of muscles.
04:13But when it comes to micronutrient deficiency,
04:18their presentation is more general,
04:22non-specific.
04:22Examples of these symptoms are
04:26simple weakening,
04:27so the wounding of the mouth and tongue.
04:30So sometimes, for example,
04:32vitamin C deficiency,
04:34the gums bleed.
04:35There are also others,
04:37the hair falls off,
04:38it becomes bald for iron deficiency.
04:41Then there are general B-complex
04:43vitamin deficiency manifestations,
04:45like headaches,
04:46like in the wrists or in the feet.
04:49However, as I have said,
04:51these manifestations are not specific.
04:55So it doesn't mean that you experienced
04:58these symptoms.
04:59Automatically, it's a nutrition deficiency
05:01or vitamin deficiency that's happening to you.
05:04So it's still important to
05:06consult a specialist
05:09to know if the cause of your symptoms
05:15is related to nutrition deficiency
05:17or maybe later,
05:18it's already starting to hurt.
05:20Well, the other day, Prof.
05:22Doctor,
05:24malnutrition is really related to starvation.
05:26But there are cases now
05:28where there is a normal income
05:30of a household,
05:32but the children there
05:34are still experiencing malnutrition.
05:37What are the possible causes of malnutrition, Doc?
05:42Usually, even if food is available,
05:47you can still see signs of deficiency.
05:50So what is the problem?
05:52Sometimes, if there is a lack of nutrients
05:54in the food,
05:56especially in children,
05:59most often,
06:01it's because of micronutrient deficiency.
06:04But if, for example,
06:07there are a lot of available foods at home,
06:09but there is an imbalance
06:11in the nutrients provided,
06:14it's usually carbohydrates,
06:17sugary drinks,
06:18more of what we're feeding them is focused on that.
06:21There is a lack of protein.
06:22So what can also happen is
06:24the child looks big or fat,
06:27but it's the lack of protein in his body.
06:30The muscle is not fully developed.
06:33They say it's because of the wind.
06:35Yes, yes.
06:36It's still a form of malnutrition.
06:38Yes.
06:39Doc, what foods should we eat
06:42to strengthen our resistance
06:44against malnutrition?
06:47Okay, so what we always say
06:50for the layman is the concept of
06:53go, grow, and glow foods.
06:55So the go foods are the ones
06:59that give energy.
07:01Still, in our recommendation,
07:04carbohydrates are still the general source
07:07of our energy.
07:08So maybe around 50% to 60% of the energy
07:12should come from carbohydrates.
07:14So what are the different kinds of those?
07:15And rice is included there
07:17because we are an Asian country.
07:19So bread, pasta, and root crops are also included there.
07:23So for the grow foods,
07:25you're referring to your protein sources.
07:28So those are also varied sources.
07:29Lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy.
07:33There are also vegetables
07:34that we call plant-based protein sources.
07:38Those are rich, like beans or nuts.
07:40Then for the glow foods,
07:43these are the ones that give us
07:44nutrients, vitamins.
07:47Rich in vitamins.
07:48Those are where our vegetables and fruits are counted.
07:52So our daily diet should be targeted
07:56to cover all the go, grow,
07:59and glow foods.
08:02So that we can feed our family.
08:06Okay, doctor, you mentioned earlier
08:07that it's Nutrition Month.
08:09To spread awareness,
08:10what are the programs
08:12that are prepared for this month?
08:14Okay, actually, the theme of Nutrition Month
08:17is the so-called PIPAN
08:20or the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition,
08:22which aims to advocate
08:25proper nutrition for everyone.
08:27So that means,
08:28from a child who is still breastfeeding
08:31until the elderly,
08:33our entire lifespan.
08:35So in Makati Med,
08:37actually, we will conduct various activities.
08:41We will have a series of lectures,
08:43and also information promotion
08:45among our hospital staff
08:47with regards to proper nutrition.
08:50Alright, on that note,
08:51thank you so much, doctor,
08:53for the time that you gave us
08:54here in our free telemedia
08:56about nutrition deficiency.
08:58This is malnutrition.
09:00Dr. Maricar Escultocan,
09:02a medical nutrition specialist.
09:04Moli, thank you so much.
09:05Thank you so much, doctor.
