00:00And that is thanks in no small part to the leadership of our chairman, Pete Aguilar.
00:10Thank you so much, Whip Clark, and to Representative Sewell for your leadership and for bringing
00:16us all together to honor the legacy of our late great friend, John Lewis.
00:22We know that the fight for voting rights is as urgent as ever.
00:27In the 11 years since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, Republican extremists
00:31have only ramped up their attacks on our democracy.
00:36States across the country have repeatedly undermined our democratic process by deliberately
00:40passing hundreds of voter suppression laws across our communities that make it harder
00:46to vote, especially for communities of color, including Latinos.
00:52The bottom line is that House Democrats believe that every citizen, regardless of where they
00:56live, what their zip code is, or what their background is, deserves the right to vote
01:01without fear or discrimination.
01:04Heroes like John Lewis risked their lives for the basic ideas, and their memory reminds
01:10us that the right to vote is the most powerful, nonviolent tool that we have to keep democracy
01:17alive.
01:18So today, House Democrats recommit ourselves to making sure that every single American
01:22has equal access to the ballot box by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
01:29Not only does this bill work to protect the sacred right to vote, but it restores the
01:34critical protections from the Voting Rights Act that block discriminatory anti-voter laws
01:39from going into effect.
01:41Voting rights should not be a partisan issue, as Representative Sewell said.
01:45All we need now is a few Republicans who believe in democracy and who believe in the promise
01:51of America to join us.
01:53With that, I'll yield back.
