00:02:35Welcome to Melbourne. I bring you General MacArthur's compliments.
00:03:00Thank you, sir.
00:03:01I am Colonel Mason. These gentlemen are Major Arthur and Captain
00:03:04Lawrence. How do you do?
00:03:05How do you do? I'm Lieutenant Schwartz. These are Lieutenants Armstrong, Leonard, O'Doole,
00:03:14Bocelli, Bollenbacher, and Emerson.
00:03:22I'm very happy to know you all, and thank God you're here.
00:03:25We're sorry we haven't a big welcoming committee, but we're trying to avoid calling attention
00:03:29to your arrival since we haven't heard from the other girls yet.
00:03:32Not even the girls on the other plane?
00:03:33No word as yet.
00:03:34Did any of the others get off?
00:03:36We were told there were ten more by submarine, but we haven't heard from them since they
00:03:39left.
00:03:40Aren't there any more? They said everyone was to be ordered off.
00:03:43Everyone was ordered off, but we could only get about twenty before it was too late.
00:03:49The rest of the girls are in the hands of those filthy...
00:03:51Then we should have stayed.
00:03:52You were carrying out your orders, and your further orders are to proceed immediately
00:03:56to the hotel, where the Red Cross has warm baths and clean clothes for you.
00:04:01And my further, though unofficial, orders are, you are to have your heart's desire.
00:04:06Anything you want.
00:04:08And what do you want most in the world?
00:04:10A tomato. A nice, big, red, cold, round, juicy tomato.
00:04:17Colonel, do you happen to know when we're supposed to go home?
00:04:23On the very next transport.
00:04:26I thought there were eight of you.
00:04:28I mean, Lieutenant Davidson. He's just being brought off.
00:04:59I wore a 6A before, and I'm gonna...
00:05:14Say, what do you know? I've forgotten how to walk in these things.
00:05:23You better sit down before you break your neck, or else get a bigger size.
00:05:26High heels. The things we do to trap men.
00:05:30Boy, this is sure a relief.
00:05:32I know people mean well, but it's nice to be by ourselves again.
00:05:36Yeah, it gets embarrassing being called a heroine all the time.
00:05:40What is a heroine, anyway?
00:05:42I don't know. Somebody who's still alive, I guess.
00:05:45If anybody calls me a heroine again, I'm gonna let them have a tomato right in the puss.
00:05:53Ethel, you'll bust if you eat another one.
00:05:55I've lost 35 pounds in this campaign, and I gotta get it back.
00:05:58Keep them coming every 15 minutes, if it's not too much trouble.
00:06:01No trouble at all. It's an honor and a privilege to be serving a group of heroines like you.
00:06:05No, you can't.
00:06:24This will do right here, nurse.
00:06:25Yes, sir.
00:06:39How is she, Patrick?
00:06:45The closer we get to home, the worse she gets.
00:06:47What do you think's wrong?
00:06:49It's simple.
00:06:51When people don't want to live, they die.
00:06:53Oh, no.
00:06:54I know we did the wrong thing.
00:06:56She didn't want to go. She wanted to stay.
00:06:58And when we got her on the plane, she just collapsed.
00:07:00If it were a mere physical collapse, I'd know what to do.
00:07:05Frankly, I'm desperate.
00:07:13I wonder...
00:07:16I wonder, perhaps, if you can help me.
00:07:20We'll do anything, doctor. Anything.
00:07:22It's not going to be easy.
00:07:25I hate to ask you, even.
00:07:27I know how much you all want to forget what you've been through.
00:07:31But I only have one hope left.
00:07:35This letter is addressed to her.
00:07:37Came through on the last plane from Indanao.
00:07:39Who's the letter from, Major?
00:07:41Signed by somebody called John.
00:07:43Oh, Vess?
00:07:44Just a moment, please.
00:07:48I want you to tell me everything you can remember.
00:07:52Things that might not even concern her.
00:07:55You never know.
00:07:57Might have its place in the pattern.
00:08:01Well, the first time I met Lieutenant Davidson was last November.
00:08:05We were all ordered to embark from San Francisco.
00:08:08I remember it was cold and drizzly,
00:08:11and I had been staying with Rosemary Larson.
00:08:15It was her hometown,
00:08:16and her family had come down with the dock to see us off.
00:08:19Goodbye, Mrs. Larson, and thanks for a wonderful time.
00:08:22I don't know when I've had better.
00:08:23You should have stayed around a little longer.
00:08:25I'd have made a real hep cat out of you.
00:08:27I don't know about the hep.
00:08:29Look, Mama, why don't you go? You'll catch cold.
00:08:32No, I won't. I want to see you go.
00:08:34Let Mama stay, Rosalie.
00:08:36I think I was going away for good.
00:08:41Davy, I'm sorry.
00:08:43Can I see you for a moment?
00:08:44This is Lieutenant O'Doole.
00:08:46All present and accounted for now, sir.
00:08:48Thank you.
00:08:50Are orchids regulation now, Lieutenant?
00:08:52Oh, they're not mine. A friend of mine gave them to me.
00:08:55Oh, I see.
00:08:57Well, good luck, Lieutenant, and bon voyage.
00:08:59Thank you, sir.
00:09:00Davy, you've got to help me. I'm in a terrible jam.
00:09:02What's the matter?
00:09:03Two of my fiancés came down to the dock.
00:09:05Two?
00:09:06Well, you know how hard it is for me to say no
00:09:08when somebody asks me to marry him.
00:09:10I thought it would be easy for you to say no by now.
00:09:12Oh, golly, it's all in fun.
00:09:14But if these two Irishmen ever meet up with each other,
00:09:16I parked one of them over at the gate.
00:09:18There you are, darling.
00:09:20I've been looking all over for you, Joan.
00:09:22Well, I've been looking all over for you, too, dear.
00:09:24You wait here. I'll be right back.
00:09:27Don't forget to write, dear.
00:09:30What does she mean, don't forget to write?
00:09:32Letters, you know, from the post office.
00:09:34Well, she's not leaving yet.
00:09:35Oh, Captain, Captain, will you hold this for me just for a second?
00:09:38And this, here.
00:09:39But we haven't had a chance to say goodbye yet.
00:09:41Oh, there's lots of time to say goodbye.
00:09:44Say, who wrote that?
00:09:45Who wrote what?
00:09:46Uh, whenever a snowflake leaves the sky,
00:09:49it turns and turns to say goodbye.
00:09:52Kind of the faintest idea.
00:09:54Oh, do you know the rest of it?
00:09:56The rest of what?
00:09:57The poem.
00:09:58Oh, no, never did.
00:10:00Well, it goes, uh, whenever a snowflake leaves the sky,
00:10:03it turns and turns to say goodbye.
00:10:05Goodbye.
00:10:06No, no, no, Captain, no. I remember the rest.
00:10:08It, uh, uh, goodbye, dear clouds so cool and gray.
00:10:13And it goes, uh, something and something on its way.
00:10:17What does?
00:10:19The snowflake.
00:10:21How's that look?
00:10:22Oh, it looks great. You're pretty.
00:10:23Thanks.
00:10:24Davey, I want you to meet my mother and dad and my brother, Georgie.
00:10:26Hold these, Georgie.
00:10:27Bye, snowflake.
00:10:28Thanks.
00:10:29Mother, this is Lieutenant Davidson, our senior officer.
00:10:31How do you do, Mrs. Larson?
00:10:32How do you do?
00:10:34I think we'd better be going.
00:10:38Please, please.
00:10:39This is her first time away.
00:10:41Take care of my baby.
00:10:42Now, there's nothing to worry about, Mrs. Larson.
00:10:44I will worry.
00:10:45Is it not so?
00:10:46A mother must worry.
00:10:48Yes, I suppose so.
00:10:49The days will be lonesome now.
00:10:51Oh, the two years will go like wildfire.
00:10:54Yes, the years are short.
00:10:56It's the days that are so long.
00:10:58Now, don't you worry.
00:10:59I'll take care of Rosemary.
00:11:00She'll be all right.
00:11:02May God save you and keep you kindly
00:11:05and stand between you and her.
00:11:08Thank you.
00:11:10Thanks again, Mrs. Larson.
00:11:12Oh, I like you.
00:11:13You eat so much.
00:11:15Oh, come on.
00:11:18Goodbye, Mom.
00:11:20Oh, where's my cake?
00:11:21What have you done with my cake?
00:11:22How did you get Frederica cake?
00:11:24Oh, I haven't had.
00:11:26Oh, Rosalie.
00:11:28Rosalie.
00:11:29Oh, you've got me crying.
00:11:31You look amazing.
00:11:32Well, darling, I did look all over for you.
00:11:34Joan.
00:11:36Where did you go?
00:11:37Well, I...
00:11:38Captain O'Rourke, I want you to meet Captain O'Brien.
00:11:40You two should know each other.
00:11:44Oh, there you are, Captain.
00:11:46I just remembered the end.
00:11:47The end of what?
00:11:48Well, you know, the snowflake.
00:11:49Oh, fine.
00:11:50Goodbye, dear cloud, so cool and great,
00:11:52then lightly travels on its way.
00:11:54Yes.
00:11:55Well, come on, darling.
00:11:56Goodbye, darling.
00:11:57Goodbye.
00:11:58Goodbye, dear.
00:11:59Goodbye.
00:12:00Goodbye.
00:12:01Goodbye.
00:12:04Thanks, pal.
00:12:05I don't know whoever said the flesh was weak.
00:12:07I find it very strong.
00:12:12Say, you catch cold, Leatherneck.
00:12:14Who, me?
00:12:16Never had a cold in my life.
00:12:18We were to be stationed at Honolulu,
00:12:20and although the boat was a slow one,
00:12:22we enjoyed every minute of it.
00:12:24It was hard to believe it was December,
00:12:26what with the tropical sea, blue water, and flying fish.
00:12:37Oh, dear.
00:12:38Oh, dear.
00:12:39Oh, dear.
00:12:40Oh, dear.
00:12:41Oh, dear.
00:12:42Oh, dear.
00:12:43Oh, dear.
00:12:44Oh, dear.
00:12:45Oh, dear.
00:12:46Oh, dear.
00:12:51Hiya.
00:12:53How's your cold, Leatherneck?
00:12:55Oh, it's not a cold.
00:12:56It's just a ruddy doze.
00:12:59You better not take too much of this tropical sun.
00:13:01You'll get burned.
00:13:02Who, me?
00:13:03I'd have a burn
00:13:05best tassel you ever seen.
00:13:13Whoo-whoo.
00:13:14Whoo-whoo.
00:13:16Don't you ever get tired of writing letters?
00:13:23Uh-uh.
00:13:24All doctors.
00:13:25Uh-huh.
00:13:26What's the date?
00:13:27It's Sunday.
00:13:28We had chapel.
00:13:29Sunday the what?
00:13:30Sunday the, uh, seventh.
00:13:31Thanks.
00:13:32I'll just head at 18 shopping days until Christmas.
00:13:33Maybe he'll take the hint.
00:13:34Pearl Harbor.
00:13:35Most of us didn't even know what it was, let alone where it was.
00:13:46So instead of landing at Hawaii, we were ordered to join a convoy somewhere in the Pacific.
00:13:50None of us realized what the whole thing meant.
00:14:18I'll open for two.
00:14:19Or three.
00:14:20I'll see you.
00:14:21I'll stay.
00:14:22I'll pass.
00:14:23Go ahead, bet.
00:14:24Well, I would.
00:14:25You should see.
00:14:26But you're not playing, Elsie.
00:14:27Two, please.
00:14:28I know it's not much of a convoy, but somehow those other ships make me feel more comfortable.
00:14:39It would be awful to be out here on the ocean all alone.
00:14:42These will do.
00:14:45I'll have three, please.
00:14:47Do you think Pearl Harbor could have been very much, Captain?
00:14:49Well, there's no official word yet.
00:14:51Still has to be proved that an airplane can sink a battleship, from my dough.
00:14:54Yeah, we probably won't see very much of the Jap fleet.
00:14:58Is that Marine trying to get your attention?
00:15:00Hmm?
00:15:01Oh, him?
00:15:02Oh, he's just a friend of mine from Kansas who wants to show me his clippings.
00:15:05He used to play football, I gathered.
00:15:07Football?
00:15:08Who is he?
00:15:09I really don't know.
00:15:10Let's find out, shall we?
00:15:12Hey, Kansas!
00:15:15Come on in!
00:15:27This is Captain Saunders, Captain Lawrence.
00:15:29How you doing?
00:15:30They thought they'd like to see your scrapbook.
00:15:32Read it to us.
00:15:33Here with them?
00:15:34Uh-huh.
00:15:35Yes.
00:15:36Go ahead.
00:15:37Yes, ma'am.
00:15:38Read about your greatest single personal exploit.
00:15:41Oh, well...
00:15:42What position did you play, Kansas?
00:15:44Oh, I sort of flew around fullback.
00:15:47I used to play...
00:15:48Carry on.
00:15:50Yes, sir.
00:15:53Won one of the most thrilling gridiron battles of the year,
00:15:56when a light, underestimated Kansas team defeated Notre Dame.
00:16:00Notre Dame?
00:16:01I thought Kansas played only high schools.
00:16:03No, sir.
00:16:04Played colleges.
00:16:07Go ahead.
00:16:08Yes, sir.
00:16:09Yes, sir.
00:16:10Though at the end of the first half,
00:16:12Notre Dame held a comfortable 14-0 margin...
00:16:15Very comfortable, I'd say.
00:16:20Margin.
00:16:21Nonetheless, in the second half,
00:16:24when the highly-touted Weeping Wolochek,
00:16:26despite an injury, was sent into the game,
00:16:28the Kansas Cyclones scored three touchdowns in ten minutes
00:16:32on runs of...
00:16:33Say, I remember that game.
00:16:35That was a terrific upset.
00:16:36Did you play on the same team with Weeping Wolochek?
00:16:38Well, uh...
00:16:40He's me.
00:16:41Well, why didn't you tell us who he was?
00:16:44I still don't know who he was.
00:16:46Weeping Wolochek.
00:16:47Yes, I know, but why Weeping Wolochek?
00:16:49Well, just sort of a habit, I guess.
00:16:51Everybody knew that until he got good and mad and started to cry,
00:16:53he couldn't play.
00:16:54Then Zowie touched down.
00:16:56Oh, yeah.
00:16:58Come on, let's get on with the game.
00:16:59Just a minute, Joan. I want to...
00:17:00Where's that Army game?
00:17:02It's right over here. I'll find it for you.
00:17:04Weeping Wolochek, what do you know?
00:17:08The card game.
00:17:09Just a minute, Joan. Be with you just a minute.
00:17:11Hey, here it is.
00:17:12I remember that game. Boy, what a game.
00:17:14Boy, did you wreck the Army.
00:17:16Yeah, well, it was just after that game
00:17:18that I sort of figured I'd better join the Marines.
00:17:20Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:17:23Uh...
00:17:27Take a right, the best.
00:17:28Sorry.
00:17:39Uh, what's the matter with me?
00:17:41Have I got dandruff or something?
00:17:43I really can't tell out here in the dark.
00:17:46That's not what I mean.
00:17:47I know what you mean.
00:17:48Mm-hmm.
00:17:50Look, why won't you ever let me see you?
00:17:52Officers are not supposed to fraternize with enlisted men.
00:17:56I don't want to fraternize. I just want to see you.
00:17:59And pass the time of day.
00:18:01Well, it would be better than nothing.
00:18:02Yes.
00:18:05Sunbed.
00:18:06We'll just stop your maneuvers
00:18:07before you make contact with the main body.
00:18:10Uh, don't you like me?
00:18:12Mm-hmm, I like you.
00:18:13That's just sort of, uh...
00:18:15So what, huh?
00:18:16That's right.
00:18:20Uh...
00:18:21Look, Lieutenant,
00:18:23if it's something I've done or if I just plain annoy you,
00:18:25I'm sorry.
00:18:26I won't bother you anymore.
00:18:28Well, don't go.
00:18:30I'm just being childish.
00:18:33I sure would like to meet one guy, though.
00:18:35It doesn't make a pass.
00:18:36Well, when you do, you better begin to worry.
00:18:39You're not so dumb.
00:18:41I just talk dumb.
00:18:42But why can't men and women be pals?
00:18:45Because only men and men are pals.
00:18:48All right, come on, get it over with.
00:18:51Better.
00:18:52Incidentally, I'm, uh, warning you, Kansas,
00:18:54I melt at a very low temperature.
00:18:56Well, then I'll try to be pals.
00:18:58Okay, and when you can't stand it any longer,
00:19:00from time to time, I'll let you kiss me.
00:19:03This, uh, one of those times?
00:19:05Nope.
00:19:07Okay.
00:19:08Let me know.
00:19:11Got him bad.
00:19:16Sucks, I guess.
00:19:32Whoa!
00:19:34Whoa!
00:19:36Whoa!
00:19:38Whoa!
00:19:39Whoa!
00:19:41Whoa!
00:19:42Whoa!
00:19:43Whoa!
00:19:44Whoa!
00:19:47Whoa!
00:19:49Whoa!
00:19:50Whoa!
00:19:51Whoa!
00:19:52Whoa!
00:19:53Whoa!
00:19:54Whoa!
00:19:57We've picked up a number of survivors
00:19:59from the torpedo ships who are suffering from shock
00:20:01and burns from the oil in the water.
00:20:03They were pitifully few,
00:20:05but more than we could accommodate in sick bay,
00:20:07so we turned the salon into a temporary hospital.
00:20:10For a while, we were so busy,
00:20:11it kind of took our minds off the war.
00:20:13One of the survivors, only slightly burned,
00:20:15was a nurse from the other ship.
00:20:17Her name was Olivia.
00:20:19We tried to be friendly,
00:20:20but she didn't want any part of us,
00:20:22so we didn't want any part of her.
00:20:24There you are, Olivia.
00:20:26I'm glad it was no more serious than that.
00:20:28Happy to see you up and about again.
00:20:30Thank you.
00:20:32Oh, Olivia.
00:20:34I'm glad to see your bandage off.
00:20:36Let's see.
00:20:37It's fine.
00:20:39You're a very lucky girl.
00:20:41Lucky?
00:20:42Well, yes.
00:20:43We didn't get many survivors.
00:20:44That's one way of looking at it.
00:20:47Why did that boat leave after Pearl Harbor?
00:20:50I realize we need supplies in the Philippines, but...
00:20:52I don't know, and I don't ask a lot of questions.
00:20:55Well, I don't know, either.
00:20:57I don't know.
00:20:58I see.
00:20:59Incidentally, your orders came through.
00:21:01You're to join our unit.
00:21:02Here are a couple of extra caps.
00:21:04I've sent your new issue to room 10 on C deck.
00:21:07You'll bunk in with Miss Bocelli.
00:21:09She's already mentioned it to me.
00:21:11She doesn't want me to.
00:21:13Oh.
00:21:15All right, I'll talk to her.
00:21:18Let me have your scissors, Bocelli.
00:21:20Tony, what's this about Olivia?
00:21:23I don't know.
00:21:25Tony, what's this about Olivia?
00:21:28I just don't want her around.
00:21:29But why?
00:21:30What's the matter?
00:21:31Oversupply of gall.
00:21:32Her gallbladder needs draining.
00:21:34What she needs is a permanent anesthetic.
00:21:37Of course, if it's an order, she can come in with me.
00:21:40Never mind.
00:21:41I'll get someone else.
00:21:44Oh, Joan.
00:21:45Joan, do you mind Olivia bunking in with you?
00:21:47What did I do to get punished?
00:21:49Well, I'd do it myself.
00:21:50Only Rosemary's still a little homesick and frightened.
00:21:52That Olivia, I'd like to give her an injection
00:21:54and leave the needle in.
00:21:55But OK, if I'm the victim, of course.
00:21:57I don't know why I'm so nice.
00:22:01Look, I'm perfectly all right.
00:22:02When do I get up?
00:22:03When you're told.
00:22:04Now, take your shirt off.
00:22:05Nice boy.
00:22:06What for?
00:22:07Because I've got some brand new diapers for you.
00:22:09Oh, beautiful.
00:22:10Tell me, do you think I can get my initials
00:22:12embroidered on those?
00:22:13Sure.
00:22:14What are your initials?
00:22:15D-O-P-E?
00:22:16Here.
00:22:17Great.
00:22:18This is going to be fine.
00:22:20Uh, what's that for?
00:22:21A bath.
00:22:22I'm going to give you a bath.
00:22:23Oh, no.
00:22:24No female's going to bathe me.
00:22:25Oh, one of those.
00:22:27Miss Davidson.
00:22:28Miss Davidson.
00:22:34The patient's supposed to have a bath
00:22:35and refuses to let me give it to him.
00:22:37Oh, all right, Miss O'Doom.
00:22:39Thank you, nurse, eh?
00:22:45Lieutenant John Summers.
00:22:46Mm-hmm.
00:22:47With the medical unit.
00:22:48Mm-hmm.
00:22:49Fine.
00:22:50You're a doctor, and you won't let a nurse wash you.
00:22:52I'm not a doctor.
00:22:53I'm a technician.
00:22:54I was associate professor of chemistry at Hawaii.
00:22:57Oh, I see.
00:22:58A professor.
00:22:59Well, that explains it.
00:23:00What are you doing?
00:23:01You're going to have a bath, and don't be coy.
00:23:04I don't care how dirty I may be.
00:23:06You reek.
00:23:07I can still smell that oil you were swimming in.
00:23:09No female's going to bathe me.
00:23:11Your mother did.
00:23:12Only until I was big enough to knock her down.
00:23:14Mm-hmm.
00:23:16All right, now.
00:23:17Which is it to be?
00:23:18The sheet or your arm?
00:23:24Angels of mercy, huh?
00:23:26You're a bunch of wrestlers.
00:23:31What's the matter?
00:23:32My head.
00:23:34Feel dizzy?
00:23:35Yes.
00:23:36No feeling in your hands and feet?
00:23:38Yes, that's right.
00:23:39You're a liar.
00:23:57See, when people get to know you awfully well,
00:23:59what do they call you?
00:24:01Lieutenant.
00:24:02Oh.
00:24:03All right, turn over and get your back done.
00:24:13This isn't as humiliating as I thought.
00:24:19That's nice.
00:24:20Do it again.
00:24:21Get down.
00:24:23Since you like this so much, I'm going to let you do it every day.
00:24:26Oh, that'll be such fun.
00:24:29Now, turn over.
00:24:35Here.
00:24:40Most of the patients were up and about by Christmas Eve.
00:24:43We'd been on the high seas for almost a month,
00:24:46and the people were getting kind of jittery.
00:24:48So the chaplain arranged with the captain to have a little Christmas party.
00:24:52Joan, I think you were with Janet that evening.
00:24:55Maybe you could tell what happened better than I.
00:24:57Well, I remember we all decided to dress up.
00:25:00I wanted to make an impression on Kansas,
00:25:02and the only snaky thing I had was a black nightgown,
00:25:05which, with a few trimmings, did for me.
00:25:10Hey, Rosemary, give me a hand, will you?
00:25:12Sure.
00:25:13Davey, aren't you dressing for the party?
00:25:15Oh, I don't think so, dear.
00:25:17How about you?
00:25:18Sorry.
00:25:22This is for Lieutenant Davidson.
00:25:23Thank you.
00:25:27Doesn't Rosemary look nice?
00:25:28Yes.
00:25:29Where'd you get the red sash?
00:25:30It was just part of an old surgical gown I dyed with mercurochrome.
00:25:33It's nice.
00:25:50And he's never seen you out of uniform.
00:25:53Who?
00:25:55What do you think?
00:25:56Oh, you mean Lieutenant Summers?
00:25:58Oh, it's still formal with you two.
00:26:00You better get informal with him, or other people will.
00:26:03He's a pretty cute guy, you know.
00:26:07Mm, pretty soigneur.
00:26:08How does he look, Rosemary?
00:26:09Haven't you got anything simpler?
00:26:11Simpler?
00:26:12Well, I have some other things in my musette bag.
00:26:14I don't know if you'd call them simple.
00:26:16Come on in.
00:26:17It's over there someplace.
00:26:25This ought to be about right.
00:26:26The locket.
00:26:27Oh, that isn't mine.
00:26:28It must be Olivia's.
00:26:29Let's see.
00:26:30I don't think she'd mind.
00:26:31I'll lock it.
00:26:35Hello, Olivia.
00:26:37Take that off.
00:26:39Well, I only want to wear it tonight.
00:26:40I said take that off.
00:26:42What do you mean snooping around in my things?
00:26:44She didn't.
00:26:45I found it.
00:26:46Say, who do you think you are?
00:26:48Oh, you want to play rough.
00:26:50Baby!
00:26:51Baby!
00:26:52Stop it.
00:26:53Stop it.
00:26:54He started it, and I don't get slugged by him.
00:26:55Stop it.
00:26:56Now, I ordered you to stop it.
00:26:58What are you, a couple of children?
00:27:00Now, what's up?
00:27:01Sorry, Davy.
00:27:02It was my fault, Davy.
00:27:03By mistake, I opened Olivia's musette bag.
00:27:05She had no right to open it.
00:27:06She said it was a mistake.
00:27:07Now, I don't care whose fault it was.
00:27:09You were both wrong.
00:27:10You realize that, don't you?
00:27:11I don't want to have to take any official action.
00:27:13Now, look, I know we're all nervous and jittery on a boat,
00:27:16going nowhere, getting nowhere.
00:27:17But we've just got to hang on a little longer, that's all.
00:27:21I don't want this to go outside this cabin.
00:27:24Now, forget it and shake hands.
00:27:25Sorry, Olivia.
00:27:29All right, Joan.
00:27:38Joan's just impulsive.
00:27:39She didn't really mean any harm.
00:27:42Come on.
00:27:43Why don't you go up with me, hmm?
00:27:45Maybe our last party in a long time.
00:27:47Leave me alone, can't you?
00:27:54Silent night, holy night.
00:28:05All is calm, all is bright.
00:28:16Round yon virgin, mother and child.
00:28:26Holy infant, so tender and mild.
00:28:38Sleep in heavenly peace.
00:28:49Sleep in heavenly peace.
00:29:05Merry Christmas.
00:29:08Merry Christmas.
00:29:12May I have your attention, please?
00:29:15Thank you.
00:29:16I'm sure we're going to have a lot of fun here tonight.
00:29:18Now, uh, before we begin,
00:29:21I personally want to thank the chaplain
00:29:23for producing this seagoing Christmas tree.
00:29:29All right, Reverend, it's your party.
00:29:32Oh, thanks.
00:29:34Uh, before we get on with it,
00:29:38there is something in my heart that I would like to say to you.
00:29:42This is the night before Christmas,
00:29:44and because it is, you must forgive me for being sentimental.
00:29:47We're a sentimental people, and I think we're proud of it.
00:29:51Despite the fact that our enemies deride us for it,
00:29:55it makes us the stronger.
00:29:57It is ironic even to try to talk about the spirit of Christmas
00:30:02when war is flaming throughout the globe.
00:30:05But we believe in this great truth.
00:30:09And so all I want to say in the tragedy all about us
00:30:15is have faith, not a blind faith,
00:30:21but faith in those things in which we believe.
00:30:25We must have such faith in those things,
00:30:28such faith in ourselves, such faith in mankind,
00:30:32that we are tough about the things we believe in,
00:30:36so tough that we will fight to the death
00:30:40to make those tender and sentimental beliefs
00:30:45like Christmas a reality forever.
00:30:52Now, God bless us, everyone.
00:30:59And let me wish you a merry Christmas.
00:31:03How about some music?
00:31:05Hey, Cat, why don't you come on in?
00:31:09All the rules are off tonight. It's Christmas.
00:31:32Why did you bring that?
00:31:34Here, a fine Christmas. No mistletoe.
00:31:38All right, if it means that much to you here.
00:31:48Merry Christmas.
00:31:51See? What did I tell you?
00:31:58Here's my present.
00:31:59Oh, yes, thank you.
00:32:01Well, what's mine to return?
00:32:04My thanks.
00:32:06I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with just that.
00:32:11You realize this is the first time you've been in my arms?
00:32:14Oh, I've been in lots of arms.
00:32:16Yes, but these are mine. I want you to get used to them.
00:32:22Say, Kansas, you know we've never danced together.
00:32:25Oh, wanna?
00:32:27Well, can you?
00:32:29Sure, I used to fool around a little bit.
00:32:33Hey, don't waste that.
00:32:35Pretty hot stuff.
00:32:50What's the matter with you, Davey?
00:32:52Why?
00:32:53You seem to be smiling all over.
00:32:57Good heavens. Aren't you in bed yet?
00:33:00Believe it or not, I was on the top deck with Kansas singing Christmas carols.
00:33:04Can I bunk in here, Davey?
00:33:06Oh, did you have another row with Olivia?
00:33:08No, but she's scary. She just lies there and stares and never goes to sleep.
00:33:12It's like sleeping in a graveyard.
00:33:14Okay, you take my bet.
00:33:16I'll try it for the night anyway.
00:33:18Thanks, pal.
00:33:19Has she ever opened up?
00:33:21Ever give you a hint of what's wrong?
00:33:23There's nothing wrong. She's just naturally a frozen-faced ghoul.
00:33:31Are you asleep, Olivia?
00:33:33No.
00:33:35Do you mind if I turn on the light?
00:33:37No.
00:33:40Is it all right if I bunk in here?
00:33:42Yes.
00:33:47What's the matter, Olivia?
00:33:49Something's hurt you. Why don't you talk about it?
00:33:51Get it off your chest.
00:33:53I can't.
00:33:54You can't?
00:33:55No, I can't.
00:33:57Something's hurt you. Why don't you talk about it?
00:33:59Get it off your chest.
00:34:01You can forget I'm your superior officer.
00:34:03It's none of your business, so don't forget you are my superior officer.
00:34:09Maybe if I knew what was eating you, I could help.
00:34:12Nobody can. I don't want anybody to try.
00:34:15I can do it myself.
00:34:21Why did you lose your temper when Joan...
00:34:23Put that down.
00:34:24Do I go through your things?
00:34:27I don't think we'd better talk anymore. I'm beginning to get pretty sore.
00:34:30All right, so you're beginning to get sore. Enjoy it.
00:34:32But stop prying into things that don't concern you.
00:34:35Maybe it does concern me.
00:34:37It concerns me that the morale of this group remains high.
00:34:40Until you joined up, it was.
00:34:42But you're just a troublemaker.
00:34:44Look, I don't really care what's bothering you at all.
00:34:47I don't like you any more than the rest of the girls do.
00:34:49I'm supposed to be a nurse, and that's all.
00:34:51No. There's more than that now that we're at war.
00:34:54Maybe you don't know what's up.
00:34:56Maybe you don't know what we're doing here.
00:34:58You think I don't know.
00:35:00All right, I'll tell you.
00:35:02I know what I'm doing. I know why I'm here.
00:35:04I know what I'm going to do. I'm going to kill Japs.
00:35:07Every blood-stained one I can get my hands on.
00:35:09Olivia.
00:35:10That doesn't sound nice coming from a nurse, does it?
00:35:12We're supposed to be angels of mercy.
00:35:14We're supposed to tend to the wounded and take care of the sick.
00:35:16We're supposed to be kind and tender and serve humanity in the name of humanity.
00:35:20What humanity? Jap humanity?
00:35:22Olivia, be quiet.
00:35:23No, you asked me. You wanted to know.
00:35:25You pried into things that didn't concern you.
00:35:27You wanted to know what this is.
00:35:29Look. Look at that.
00:35:31Do you know what it is?
00:35:33I'll tell you. It's a boy.
00:35:35Come in, both of you. You wanted to know too.
00:35:38Today is Christmas, isn't it?
00:35:40The time for cheer and good fellowship and for peace.
00:35:43Well, today's my wedding day.
00:35:45You see that?
00:35:47He and I were to be married today in St. Louis.
00:35:49And why weren't we?
00:35:51Because he's dead.
00:35:52He died that first morning.
00:35:54They killed him. I saw him.
00:35:56He was running across the field to his plane, and they killed him.
00:35:59Sixty bullets. Sixty.
00:36:02By the time I got to him, he was dead.
00:36:04His face was gone. I couldn't see him anymore.
00:36:07Just blood. Blood all over.
00:36:12Olivia.
00:36:14Don't.
00:36:15Let me go. Let me go.
00:36:17They must be punished, and I'm going to punish them.
00:36:19Yes, dear.
00:36:20He was dead. It was ended for him.
00:36:23Oh, Olivia, dear.
00:36:26I wanted him. He was all I had.
00:36:29Yes, dear.
00:36:31I loved him so much.
00:36:35The next few days, we really began to get jittery.
00:36:38The Japs kept jamming our radio, so we never knew what was going on.
00:36:42And the rumor factory was going full blast.
00:36:46All over Los Angeles.
00:36:48Shh. Quiet. Listen.
00:36:51Well, it seems Honolulu itself...
00:36:53Well, maybe it is so.
00:36:55Say, baby, we just heard on the radio we lost Honolulu.
00:36:57Now, how could you hear that? I heard it, too.
00:36:59All it said was, blah, blah, blah, Honolulu.
00:37:01San Francisco's in flames. I know that.
00:37:03Tony, turn that thing down.
00:37:05You talk like a bunch of old women. You know what I think?
00:37:08I think you better all give up thinking for the duration.
00:37:11We haven't lost Honolulu, and there's been no fire.
00:37:14We haven't lost Honolulu, and there's been no bombing...
00:37:16either in Los Angeles or San Francisco.
00:37:18Who said so? I just read the communique the captain got.
00:37:21The truth is, Manila's been declared an open city.
00:37:24What does that mean?
00:37:26It means we can't land there.
00:37:28Well, then, are we going back home?
00:37:30We can't go back. The army needs what supplies we've got on board.
00:37:33We've been ordered to a place called Bataan.
00:37:35Bataan Peninsula. It's in command of General MacArthur.
00:37:38Well, if it's good enough for General, it's good enough for me...
00:37:40as long as they've got plenty to eat.
00:37:42I've got a decent beauty parlor. My hair's a mess.
00:37:53Oh, hello.
00:37:54Well, hello. Have you been trying to avoid me?
00:37:57Frankly, I have.
00:37:59Why?
00:38:00Oh, because... because I've been trying to avoid you.
00:38:03Well, let's get away from here. The noise of these engines...
00:38:06I find the noise very reassuring.
00:38:08Oh, come on.
00:38:12Now, I don't want to seem impetuous.
00:38:14You don't?
00:38:15All right, I do want to seem impetuous, then.
00:38:17But the point is, anything can happen.
00:38:19Such as?
00:38:20The boat might sink.
00:38:21Oh, it might.
00:38:23If it does, we might never see each other again.
00:38:27That's possible.
00:38:28Perhaps someplace in the hereafter.
00:38:31But then I wouldn't have my body.
00:38:33What's more important, you wouldn't have yours either.
00:38:37That might be very interesting.
00:38:39Well, I'll see you there sometime.
00:38:41I haven't made my point yet.
00:38:43After all, I'm not so bad-looking.
00:38:45I'm supposed to be very intelligent, in fact.
00:38:47I work hard. I make $5,000 a year.
00:38:49Oh, you make $166 a month now.
00:38:52Please, I mean this.
00:38:54I'm in love with you, Lieutenant.
00:38:57If only we'd met somewhere else before.
00:38:59You'd have had a wonderful time, would you?
00:39:02I think so.
00:39:03I'm positive. I'd have really been foolish.
00:39:06I feel foolish enough now, but then I would have...
00:39:08spent sleepless nights, bought flowers to lay at your feet.
00:39:11Flowers I couldn't possibly have afforded.
00:39:13I'd have been over-meticulous with you in taxi cabs,
00:39:16knowing, of course, you're not that kind of girl.
00:39:18At first, I think my dog-like devotion would have made you pity me a little.
00:39:22And then my fatal charm would have snuck up on you,
00:39:25and before you knew it, you'd be mine.
00:39:27In some dingy little French restaurant,
00:39:30where the wine wasn't too bad.
00:39:32But with all that's happening,
00:39:34I don't have to be ridiculous for you to love me.
00:39:36There's no time.
00:39:37Out there, the second a torpedo may be spinning its way toward us.
00:39:40And you've no time either.
00:39:42I think when you knew me, you'd love me.
00:39:44But there's no time.
00:39:45Don't you see we haven't got a second to waste?
00:39:47You're right.
00:39:49There's no time.
00:39:51No time for anything personal.
00:39:53Thanks for everything you said.
00:39:56Maybe everything you say is true,
00:39:58and maybe you wouldn't have had to do all those things.
00:40:01I'd have stopped you the moment I knew.
00:40:03You know now, don't you?
00:40:04No, please, John, don't make it difficult.
00:40:06I've been trying to avoid you.
00:40:07That ought to tell you something.
00:40:09I can't love you.
00:40:10I won't permit myself to.
00:40:11Why not?
00:40:12Because I've got a job to do.
00:40:14What's that got to do with it?
00:40:15We've all got jobs to do.
00:40:16I know, but our responsibilities are greater now.
00:40:18Nothing can stand in the way.
00:40:24You do look a little foolish.
00:40:27I wish we had met somewhere in a dingy little French restaurant.
00:40:31But maybe we will.
00:40:33Good night.
00:40:34Let me kiss you goodbye now?
00:40:35No.
00:40:36Just once?
00:40:41Oh, no, please.
00:40:42Please.
00:40:52What's the matter?
00:40:54Listen, the engines have stopped.
00:40:56Your life preserver.
00:40:58Where's your life preserver?
00:40:59I left it in the cabin.
00:41:00Here, take mine.
00:41:01Take it.
00:41:03Darling, before anything happens, tell me, do you love me?
00:41:05No.
00:41:06You're lying.
00:41:07You do love me.
00:41:08Yes.
00:41:09Well, say it then.
00:41:10I love you.
00:41:11You better get down to your stations.
00:41:12What are the engines stopped for?
00:41:13They run up the cabin.
00:41:14I'm sure he'd be delighted to tell you over a scotch and soda.
00:41:16It's one of ours?
00:41:17Sounds like it.
00:41:22It is.
00:41:23It's a PBY.
00:41:30Bataan can't be so very far away.
00:41:37We landed at Mariveles, a small, snug harbor on Bataan Peninsula,
00:41:41which the Navy used as an emergency supply base.
00:41:55Lieutenant Davidson?
00:41:56Yes, sir.
00:41:57The CO wants to see you immediately.
00:41:58Yes, sir.
00:41:59This is Mr. Ling Chi.
00:42:00How do you do?
00:42:01How do you do?
00:42:02He's going to drive you to your destination.
00:42:03You leave right away.
00:42:04Mr. Ling will take you to the CO.
00:42:05Thank you.
00:42:11It's good to be on land again.
00:42:13Have you been in the Army long, Mr. Ling?
00:42:15No, I was editor of the Chinese Advertiser.
00:42:17And I'm happy to say, like Abu Ben Adam,
00:42:20my name led all the rest on the Japanese blacklist.
00:42:23Girls, this is Mr. Ling Chi,
00:42:25who's going to be with us for the rest of the trip.
00:42:27Each one found her own duffel bag.
00:42:29Heat big war.
00:42:30Him near here, savvy.
00:42:32I'm a Chinese lieutenant, not an Indian.
00:42:35The war is just beyond the mountains.
00:42:45Sir, Lieutenant Davidson.
00:42:48Colonel White.
00:42:49I thought it might be you when I saw the name.
00:42:52My goodness, you've grown into a beautiful woman.
00:42:54Oh, thank you.
00:42:55Where was it?
00:42:56Shanghai.
00:42:57Oh, I remember now.
00:42:58It was just after you lost your dad.
00:43:01Well, welcome to Bataan.
00:43:02Thank you, sir.
00:43:03And you're in the Army, too?
00:43:04Yes, and very happy.
00:43:05Happier still that you're our CO.
00:43:07I'm a terribly strict disciplinarian, Janet.
00:43:10Now, these are your orders.
00:43:12You proceed immediately to Lamai,
00:43:14our number one base hospital.
00:43:18Now, here's Lamai.
00:43:20This is where you landed at Mariveles.
00:43:22And over there is Corregidor.
00:43:24And up there beyond Lamai,
00:43:25about 40 kilometers of the front lines.
00:43:27Thank you, sir.
00:43:30Pardon me, Colonel White.
00:43:32Where is the fourth medical unit?
00:43:34Fourth unit? Let me see.
00:43:35They were the first ones off.
00:43:36They disembarked early this afternoon.
00:43:38Oh, they've gone.
00:43:39To what base, sir?
00:43:40Base?
00:43:41They're based on the front lines.
00:43:43They're probably there by now.
00:43:46The technicians, too?
00:43:47Well, there's nothing for them to get technical with,
00:43:50except maybe a stretcher.
00:43:52Thank you, sir.
00:44:00Hey, Jim!
00:44:06Hi, Kansas.
00:44:07Gosh, you've been looking all over for me.
00:44:09I just wanted to say so long.
00:44:11No, well, I'll be seeing you.
00:44:13Kansas, are you scared, too?
00:44:15You mean it feels as if you've suddenly lost your belly?
00:44:19Yeah.
00:44:20Me, too.
00:44:21But that's just like in a football game.
00:44:24You stand there and wait for the whistle to blow,
00:44:27and all of a sudden your knees get like water
00:44:29and you feel like you're throwing up.
00:44:32Then all of a sudden it toots.
00:44:34Oh, don't do that.
00:44:36Then the first thing you know, you're in there
00:44:38and you're not scared anymore.
00:44:40I hope so.
00:44:42So long, Kansas.
00:44:43And don't get lost.
00:44:45Who, me?
00:44:46How could I get lost?
00:44:48Hey, your gang went in the other direction.
00:44:50Well, uh...
00:44:53Thank you.
00:44:54Don't let anything happen to you.
00:44:56Who, me?
00:44:57How could anything happen to me?
00:45:10Look, don't say anything else except goodbye.
00:45:14Goodbye.
00:45:17Here's some gum.
00:45:19A little farewell present for the girls.
00:45:21Thank you.
00:45:22So long.
00:45:23So long, girls.
00:45:24So long.
00:45:25Good luck.
00:45:36We arrived at Lamai late that night.
00:45:38It was a dusty little village where the army
00:45:40had established a small supply base.
00:45:42But with a sudden change in plans,
00:45:44the warehouses became hospitals and headquarters
00:45:46for the nurses.
00:45:47This was to be our home.
00:45:49We were glad to be there,
00:45:51and glad mostly at the thought of a night's sleep
00:45:53on solid earth.
00:45:55Oh, I wasn't glad to see you.
00:45:58Nope.
00:45:59Well, the old hawk still hasn't changed a bit.
00:46:02Easy now.
00:46:03One at a time.
00:46:09Captain McGregor?
00:46:10Yes.
00:46:11Lieutenant Davidson reporting.
00:46:12Well, you finally got here.
00:46:13Hello, Ma.
00:46:14Oh, Jewel, isn't it?
00:46:15Yes, Fort Sam Houston.
00:46:16We used to call her Ma at Fort Sam.
00:46:18Her bite's much worse than her bark.
00:46:19But I bark, too.
00:46:20Now, you better all dive into your whites.
00:46:22I'll get you some GI tomorrow.
00:46:23You can't wear whites here.
00:46:24The nearest laundry is in Manila.
00:46:26We need you right away.
00:46:28Some of our girls have forgotten what the word sleep means.
00:46:31Chi, show them to nurses' quarters.
00:46:34I'll get a move on with you.
00:46:35I'm glad you're here.
00:46:36Thank you.
00:46:38Captain?
00:46:39Yes?
00:46:40Do you have any Japanese wounded here?
00:46:42A few.
00:46:43I'd like to handle them.
00:46:44You know their language?
00:46:45No, but I'm anxious to learn.
00:46:48Well, I guess you can be accommodated.
00:46:50I'll put you down for Ward 11.
00:46:52Thank you, Captain.
00:46:53The name is D'Arcy.
00:47:00And be careful of the fire.
00:47:02It's a dangerous place.
00:47:05And be careful of the foxholes.
00:47:07Where are they?
00:47:08They're all over.
00:47:09Well, can't you see them?
00:47:10No.
00:47:11Well, then, how do you know where they are?
00:47:13If you fall in one, you'll know.
00:47:16Uh, this is Ward 7.
00:47:18That's me.
00:47:19Next to it is the children's ward.
00:47:21Oh, that's for me.
00:47:22See you later, kids.
00:47:23Bye.
00:47:24And this is the surgery.
00:47:26Come on, Rosemary.
00:47:27You go with me.
00:47:28Good night, girls.
00:47:29Good night.
00:47:30Over there is Number 3.
00:47:32Number 3, that's me.
00:47:34This is Ward Number 11.
00:47:36This is where we keep the prisoners.
00:47:38Why aren't the numbers in order?
00:47:39Oh, well, we'll mix them up
00:47:40so as to confuse the Japs and ourselves.
00:47:43Well, they certainly aren't confusing me.
00:47:45I'd like to know.
00:48:03Oh, I'm Darcy.
00:48:20Patterson.
00:48:21Oh, I'm so glad you're here.
00:48:23I'm sorry, but they all need their dressings changed
00:48:25when you get around to it.
00:48:27Run along.
00:48:28I'll take over.
00:48:29Thanks.
00:48:30Good night.
00:48:32Good night.
00:48:33Good night.
00:48:34Good night.
00:48:35Good night.
00:48:36Good night.
00:48:37Good night.
00:48:38Good night.
00:48:39Good night.
00:48:40Good night.
00:48:41Good night.
00:48:42Good night.
00:48:43Good night.
00:48:44Good night.
00:48:45Good night.
00:48:46Good night.
00:48:47Good night.
00:48:48Good night.
00:48:49Good night.
00:48:50Good night.
00:48:51Good night.
00:48:52Good night.
00:48:53Good night.
00:48:54Good night.
00:48:55Good night.
00:48:56Good night.
00:48:57Good night.
00:48:58Good night.
00:48:59Good night.
00:49:00Good night.
00:49:01Good night.
00:49:02Good night.
00:49:03Good night.
00:49:04Good night.
00:49:05We look like ants.
00:49:06Yes, finish.
00:49:07That's just exhaustion.
00:49:08That poor kid.
00:49:09Get him to bed.
00:49:10We'll take over.
00:49:11Where are your surgery masks?
00:49:12Masks?
00:49:13We used them all up, long ago.
00:49:15You go on in.
00:49:16I'll have to scrub again.
00:49:22I'm sorry.
00:49:23I can't understand you.
00:49:24I'm sorry.
00:49:25I tore my glove.
00:49:26Help me with the new one, please.
00:49:29I have a peacetime practice, as well as a wartime practice.
00:49:33My name is Jose Padilla,
00:49:35University of Philippines and Johns Hopkins.
00:49:38I'm Miss Larson.
00:49:39Those are good hands for surgery.
00:49:41We can use them here.
00:49:42All right, Miss Larson.
00:49:45You must forgive me if I talk while I'm operating.
00:49:48I'm so used to lecturing to my students.
00:49:51I'm sorry.
00:49:53I'm sorry.
00:49:54I'm sorry.
00:49:55I'm sorry.
00:49:56I'm sorry.
00:49:57I'm so used to lecturing to my students.
00:50:00Sponge, sometimes I thank my stars
00:50:04for my scientific education.
00:50:06It makes me objective.
00:50:08Broken bone.
00:50:09Let's set it.
00:50:10You know what to do.
00:50:11A baby to be born.
00:50:13Breach delivery.
00:50:14Porceps.
00:50:16Only three out of five live.
00:50:18Live for what?
00:50:20Don't people die fast enough without destroying each other?
00:50:24Is life too long?
00:50:26No.
00:50:27We mustn't ask that.
00:50:29That's not scientific.
00:50:31I wonder how scientific those still heaps out there
00:50:34on the battlefield feel.
00:50:36Guns, machines, men.
00:50:38So much rubbish.
00:50:41What was it my student asked?
00:50:43Chemically, a man is worth $0.97.
00:50:46Probably $1.05.
00:50:48What with the shortage of bats and monopoly now,
00:50:51the dead have risen in value.
00:50:54Two for $1.98 on dollar day.
00:50:57Doctor, the patient.
00:50:59We have done all we can for her.
00:51:01She will die soon of a bullet wound
00:51:03she received two days ago.
00:51:05When the baby started to come, it was too much for her.
00:51:08Tie.
00:51:12Now where were we in the lecture?
00:51:15This little fellow we're about to introduce to the world tonight.
00:51:19What bore him?
00:51:21I don't know.
00:51:22He forgot to teach me about spirits somewhere.
00:51:26$0.97 worth of body but a priceless spirit.
00:51:30Let's go.
00:51:52May he be born to live in freedom.
00:51:56Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!
00:51:59Superman with one hand held a streamliner and with the other one tore down the bridge and thus saved the life of his sweetheart.
00:52:06Now, Superman is holding the streamliner of a ship.
00:52:10My translator.
00:52:11If he's so good, why doesn't he have a chariot?
00:52:15She wants to know if Superman is so good, why isn't he here?
00:52:18She would. Tell her he just landed with the marines. We call him Kansas.
00:52:24Oh, Miss Danson.
00:52:25Yes?
00:52:26Here's your list.
00:52:27I've assigned all your girls. I'll see you in the morning.
00:52:28Darcy with the Japanese wounded!
00:52:30What is it?
00:52:41Olivia!
00:52:43Olivia!
00:52:46It's all right. I couldn't do it.
00:52:49I didn't have the guts to, I suppose.
00:52:52I couldn't kill even a wounded rat.
00:52:56There's no reason to worry. I was just a little silly.
00:52:58Don't you think it would be better if I took over?
00:53:00No, not at all. There's nothing wrong here.
00:53:03Is there, Olivia?
00:53:05No.
00:53:06You don't want anyone to leave you now?
00:53:08No.
00:53:09Right. I'll see you later.
00:53:17We soon found out how right McGregor was about wearing whites.
00:53:20The next day, the quartermaster gave us some men's coveralls, as well as their shoes and underwear.
00:53:25It seemed as if no man in the army wore anything smaller than size 46.
00:53:30The next couple of weeks were misleading,
00:53:32as the pressure from the enemy got to be routine to us,
00:53:35and the wounded kept pouring in from the daily engagements.
00:53:38But the most terrible thing was our medical supplies were beginning to run low,
00:53:42and we didn't know what to do.
00:53:44We had no idea what to do.
00:53:46We didn't know what to do.
00:53:48We didn't know what to do.
00:53:50We didn't know what to do.
00:53:52We didn't know what to do.
00:53:54We didn't know what to do.
00:53:56The most terrible thing was our medical supplies were beginning to run low,
00:54:00and the same food over and over.
00:54:03Carabao meat, tea, and a bit of rice.
00:54:06Occasionally, we got a mule steak.
00:54:08It was so stubborn, it stuck in your throat.
00:54:11Most of us slept in GI underwear,
00:54:14except Joan, who had clung desperately to her black silk nightgown.
00:54:19Good morning, sunshine.
00:54:21Good morning, Joan.
00:54:23Hello.
00:54:24Hi.
00:54:26You know, she's going to wear that black nightgown right up to the pearly gates.
00:54:30She says it keeps her morale up, and it does.
00:54:33You tired?
00:54:35No.
00:54:37And do my feet hurt?
00:54:39If I didn't see mine from time to time, I wouldn't know I had them.
00:54:43You know, that little Filipino scout with the abdomen wound's going to be all right.
00:54:47Swell.
00:54:49You're doing a grand job, Livvy.
00:54:51Who isn't?
00:54:53Thanks, baby.
00:54:55For what?
00:54:57I can't say it exactly, but for what you did.
00:55:01Setting me straight, I mean.
00:55:03You set yourself straight.
00:55:05You were so right in letting me fight it out for myself.
00:55:09I guess if you work long enough and hard enough, you do forget.
00:55:13Almost.
00:55:16You want to talk about him?
00:55:18No. No point.
00:55:20At least I don't want to die anymore.
00:55:22I have too much to do.
00:55:24You never did, really.
00:55:25Yes, I did.
00:55:27There didn't seem to be anything left.
00:55:31I think I know how you feel.
00:55:35Worried about your lieutenant?
00:55:38I haven't heard a thing since we left the boat.
00:55:44Out, everybody. Out. Emergency.
00:55:47Wait.
00:55:49I'll call you later.
00:55:50Come on, girls.
00:55:51Emergency, Jones.
00:55:52What's up?
00:55:54Looks like another convoy of wounded.
00:55:56Come out to surgery.
00:55:57Right.
00:56:04I've got an emergency of my own.
00:56:08There's no use, Colonel.
00:56:09I can't take any more wounded.
00:56:11I'm sure we have no more beds.
00:56:12You've got to do something, Ma.
00:56:14I'll run over to the jungle hospital tomorrow.
00:56:16Maybe I can steal some there.
00:56:17Hello, Colonel White.
00:56:18Hello, Janet.
00:56:19How many empty beds have we?
00:56:20We have none.
00:56:21Schwartz, you better get over to surgery.
00:56:23Yes, Captain McGregor.
00:56:24Davidson, take over in my office with him.
00:56:26Did I hear the name Davidson?
00:56:27Yes.
00:56:28Oh, Janet, this is my son, Flight Lieutenant Archie McGregor.
00:56:31How do you do?
00:56:32Flying with the infantry now.
00:56:33Oh, how did that happen?
00:56:34We just got caught with our planes down.
00:56:36I've heard quite a lot about you from John Somers.
00:56:39John?
00:56:40Well, where is he?
00:56:41In the mess hall.
00:56:42Oh, thank you.
00:56:46John!
00:57:01Hiya, Davy.
00:57:03Hello, darling.
00:57:05Oh, say, it feels better without the whiskers.
00:57:08You finished?
00:57:09Yes.
00:57:10Did you get some sleep?
00:57:11Best I've ever had.
00:57:12You're a perfect sedative.
00:57:13Well, let's call a taxi.
00:57:14Where's the nearest nightclub?
00:57:15No, you're going for a walk.
00:57:17A walk I've taken so many times, talking to you even though you weren't there.
00:57:21No taxis tonight.
00:57:27Have you seen Miss Davidson?
00:57:29Well, she finished her duty about 15 minutes ago and then said she was...
00:57:32Oh, no, that wasn't her.
00:57:33We haven't seen her at all.
00:57:34If you see her, tell her I want her to report to me immediately.
00:57:37Yes, Mama.
00:57:39Oh, this.
00:57:40Keeps up my morale.
00:57:46This is it.
00:57:48The Bataan River.
00:57:51You wouldn't even know there's a war going on here.
00:57:54That was the idea.
00:57:59Darling, was it terrible up there?
00:58:01It wasn't pretty.
00:58:03We're so outnumbered.
00:58:04Sometimes the Jap losses were 300 to 1.
00:58:06Still, they kept pouring them in.
00:58:08That dive bomb was ever the worst.
00:58:10Up and down every road, all blue.
00:58:12That dive bomb was ever the worst.
00:58:14Up and down every road, all day, all night.
00:58:16Those Filipino scouts.
00:58:18Our poor guys sleeping on their rifles and machine guns.
00:58:21The bravest men I've ever even heard of.
00:58:24They must be.
00:58:26They don't give quarter and they don't ask for any.
00:58:28I can't figure it out.
00:58:30Figure what?
00:58:31Why they do it.
00:58:32There's something other than just fighting against the Japs.
00:58:35These fellows aren't a bit afraid to die.
00:58:40That's our air raid signal.
00:58:41Come on, there's a trench over there.
00:58:55It's the only nice thing the Japs have done so far this war.
00:58:59Oh, look.
00:59:03You see, we have nothing but the best.
00:59:06You know, sometimes I thought you might forget me.
00:59:08I tried to.
00:59:10You did? What for?
00:59:12Because you trouble me so much.
00:59:14I'm sorry.
00:59:16You know, everything that happens, everything I do...
00:59:19You're part of it.
00:59:21I think I can't get you out of my mind.
00:59:23Don't try.
00:59:25I'm not going to anymore.
00:59:31It's the reconnaissance, I guess.
00:59:36Why are you looking at me like that for?
00:59:39I want to remember exactly how you look.
00:59:42You know, sometimes I couldn't even remember the color of your eyes.
00:59:45Your whole face was hazy.
00:59:47That's when I look my best.
00:59:49Thank God I had you to think about out there.
00:59:52I still don't think you should go back.
00:59:54Yeah, you know better than that.
00:59:58I have a feeling that if you go back, I'll never see you again.
01:00:01Don't worry. Believe me, I'll take care of myself for you.
01:00:04I promise you won't worry.
01:00:07I promise.
01:00:09But I'll worry.
01:00:15That's the all clear.
01:00:18Well, I guess we better get back.
01:01:07Damn it!
01:01:08Well, what's up?
01:01:09We've got orders to evacuate.
01:01:10Are they that close?
01:01:11I don't know. We've just been told to clear out of here.
01:01:15Captain McGregor, how close are they?
01:01:17Where have you been? I told you to report.
01:01:19I wasn't able to get back, but what I want to know...
01:01:21Davidson, I discovered you went out with Lieutenant Sumner's.
01:01:24I'm warning you, if there's a repetition of anything like this,
01:01:27I shall order you to pack up and leave.
01:01:29I don't want to go back.
01:01:31I don't want to go back.
01:01:33If there's a repetition of anything like this,
01:01:35I shall order you to pack up and recommend a dishonorable discharge.
01:01:39As a girl whose people have been in the army all their lives,
01:01:42you wouldn't want that to happen.
01:01:44No, I wouldn't.
01:01:46Thank you, Captain.
01:01:47Okay, then we'll forget the whole incident.
01:01:49Now, I have orders here to evacuate the hospital.
01:01:51We've got to be out by tonight so we can destroy the base.
01:01:54The demolition squad will be here in about eight hours,
01:01:56so that's how much time we've got.
01:01:58After the patients have been evacuated, you'd better get the surgery out.
01:02:02Hey, what are you doing out here?
01:02:04Come on, look out.
01:02:10Don't.
01:02:11They were out in the street.
01:02:12Here, take her.
01:02:14Listen, I'm going to beat your brains out if you don't stay around here.
01:02:17I don't care what she has to do.
01:02:19You stay here.
01:02:20Now, mind.
01:02:24What's the matter with you?
01:02:25Do you want to kill us all?
01:02:26I've got some passengers for you.
01:02:27But I'm in a hurry.
01:02:28They're in a hurry, too.
01:02:30Here.
01:02:31Now, you take care of your sister.
01:02:32Take care of her, Stevie.
01:02:34Is this Superman?
01:02:35He'd better be.
01:02:36Go on.
01:02:37On your way, toots.
01:02:38On your way.
01:02:43We've been ordered to evacuate.
01:02:44We've got to get the surgery to Little Bagheel.
01:02:46They can't leave yet.
01:02:47There are more cases.
01:02:48I know I can save.
01:02:49But we've been ordered.
01:02:50I know, but I must have a little more time.
01:02:53Just a minute.
01:02:58All right, we're ready.
01:03:02Hey, kids, see you at the other side.
01:03:06I think we'd better be getting along, Lieutenant.
01:03:08I guess this is about it.
01:03:09We've heard some rifle fire not so very far back.
01:03:11The demolition squad isn't even here.
01:03:13I'm going to get you.
01:03:14I'm going to get you.
01:03:15I'm going to get you.
01:03:16I'm going to get you.
01:03:17I'm going to get you.
01:03:18I'm going to get you.
01:03:19I'm going to get you.
01:03:20I'm going to get you.
01:03:22Sounds like a Jap patrol has infiltrated through.
01:03:24Come on, girls, get in.
01:03:25Hurry up.
01:03:26I forgot something.
01:03:27I'll be right back.
01:03:28No, Joan, come back here.
01:03:29You haven't time.
01:03:30Let's get started.
01:03:31She'll be back in a minute.
01:03:32Joan!
01:03:36Joan!
01:03:38Come on, Joan, hurry it up.
01:03:40We've got to get going.
01:03:41Come on.
01:03:49Get in the house.
01:03:50Come on.
01:03:51Get in the house.
01:03:52Hurry up.
01:03:53Come on.
01:04:01Let him in.
01:04:02Close the door and put the light out.
01:04:07I'm sorry.
01:04:08Never mind that.
01:04:09Now get down low all of you.
01:04:14He's dead.
01:04:18Do you think they'll miss us?
01:04:19Do you think they'll send someone for us?
01:04:20Of course they will.
01:04:21What are we going to do?
01:04:22We'll get out of this somehow.
01:04:23I know what I'm going to do.
01:04:25If somebody doesn't come, we'd better all kill ourselves.
01:04:28But why?
01:04:29Somebody's coming.
01:04:30Davey said somebody's coming.
01:04:31I was in Nanking.
01:04:32I saw what happened to the women there.
01:04:34Keep quiet.
01:04:35When the Red Cross protested, the Japanese
01:04:37called it the privilege of serving
01:04:38his imperial majesty's troops.
01:04:40It's an honor, an honor you die from.
01:04:42Stop that nonsense, do you hear?
01:04:44I've seen them fight over a woman like dogs.
01:04:46Stop it.
01:04:50Here's a grenade.
01:04:51Maybe we could get them if we...
01:04:53Here, give me that.
01:04:54If we threw a grenade in the mist,
01:04:55it would mean sure death for all of us.
01:04:57We might kill one...
01:04:58Stop talking about killing.
01:04:59Look, I want you all to stay here.
01:05:02I'm going out to start that truck.
01:05:04As soon as you hear the motor running, make a dash for it.
01:05:06It's our only chance.
01:05:11Now don't be frightened.
01:05:12I'm going to throw this grenade in the opposite direction
01:05:14and try to divert their attention.
01:05:16Don't go, Davy, don't go.
01:05:17Go on.
01:05:30One, two, three, four.
01:05:32One, two, three, four.
01:06:03One, two, three, four.
01:06:29Libby, Libby, come back here.
01:06:31Libby, Libby.
01:06:41Olivia.
01:06:46Come on, Davy.
01:06:47Thanks for everything.
01:06:49Get back in the surgery.
01:06:51No, it's our only chance.
01:06:53We can't get through.
01:06:55It's one of us or all of us.
01:06:58Throw it away.
01:07:00It's too late.
01:07:02Goodbye, Davy.
01:07:06Oh, no.
01:07:07Olivia.
01:07:11Olivia.
01:07:12Olivia.
01:07:30Get away.
01:07:56Out, everybody out.
01:07:57Hurry.
01:08:00trip through the jungle, we arrived at our new base, the Jungle Hospital, which
01:08:04was officially known as Hospital Kilometer 163.5. But it was no hospital
01:08:10at all, it was just jungle. The beds were placed under canvases which kept the sun
01:08:15off the more serious cases, but it was so overcrowded that many of the beds were
01:08:19just placed out under the trees, which at least kept them hidden from the jack
01:08:23planes. Nineteen wards were set up in this way. Each ward had a capacity of two
01:08:29or three hundred patients, and this was increased until we had between five and
01:08:33eight thousand of them. Most of the patients began to be not wounded, but men
01:08:39coming down with malaria and dysentery. A little one-cylinder engine provided the
01:08:44electricity for the main operating room, which was just a tent, and we sterilized
01:08:48our instruments in three large garbage cans, one with soapy water and two with
01:08:52boiling water. We kept washing and re-washing the dressings after they'd
01:08:56been used. In our flight from Lamai, Rosemary had received a nasty gash on
01:09:01the forehead, but under the healing hands of Jose, she escaped with only a slight
01:09:06scar. And as the weeks went by, we were so busy we had no time to think about what
01:09:12happened to Olivia, and even Joan seemed to be convinced eventually that it
01:09:16wasn't her fault. We were among the first to use powdered sulfanilamide on open
01:09:21wounds. It worked wonders. We called ourselves the battling orphans of Bataan.
01:09:26No father, no mother, no Uncle Sam, as we wondered where the reinforcements were.
01:09:31But even so, we continued to hope. Some of us got malaria too, fevers of 104 and 105,
01:09:38but there was no time for coddling. The soldiers were the patients.
01:09:42How are you, Irma? I'm all right. Here, take your quinine.
01:09:48There isn't time. Take time. Come on.
01:09:56Here, take some water.
01:10:01Guess I better take some too. I don't know which is the worst.
01:10:10Davy was in charge of the jungle hospital as McGregor had her headquarters at Little Baggio,
01:10:14which was another base about four kilometers away. She had thrown herself
01:10:18into her work with John constantly on her mind, although one never would have
01:10:22known it. The only contact between them was a little monkey John had sent one
01:10:26day by a wounded soldier. He quickly became the pet of the company.
01:10:36We called him Tojo because they look so much alike.
01:10:44Hey, did you hear the news? Supplies and reinforcements. There's a big convoy on the way.
01:10:52Friends, I want you to meet my own private little army. These guys' names are Joe.
01:10:57Me, Joe, too. Me, Joe, too. Incidentally, these babies are the sweetest little fighters you've ever seen in action.
01:11:03Me, Joe, too. Him, Joe, too. Me, Joe, too. Me, Joe, too.
01:11:09Up and out of Cebu and I got some mail for all of you.
01:11:17Hey, look what I got. It's a box for you, Rosemary.
01:11:23Oh, I bet it's the cake. Remember the cake we had in the boat?
01:11:26You're the only one that remembers that you're the only one that ate it.
01:11:29I'm not having it. I'm not having it.
01:11:32I'm not having it. I'm not having it.
01:11:34I'm not having it. I'm not having it.
01:11:38Okay, Joe, see if you can find yourself some chow. Pronto.
01:11:44Hello. Hi.
01:11:46You big bum. You always say what I expect.
01:11:49Isn't that nice? Yes.
01:11:51Say, what are you doing here, anyway? Oh, I got some mail for you.
01:11:54Oh, thanks, pal.
01:11:57They're open.
01:11:59I guess those censors must have run out of glue.
01:12:02Hans, have you been reading my mail?
01:12:04Well, I had to read myself to sleep, didn't I?
01:12:07You don't want to deprive me of my sleep, do you?
01:12:09Anyway, I didn't read all of them.
01:12:11Very dull, most of them. Very dull.
01:12:14Oh, I'm terribly sorry.
01:12:16Except this, uh, Dr. O'Leary.
01:12:19He's rather a cute guy, ain't he? He is.
01:12:21He writes with that real literary style.
01:12:25What's he to you?
01:12:27Well, since you read them, dear, you ought to know.
01:12:31Give me a touch.
01:12:35If it's a cake, I hope it's chocolate.
01:12:39Oh, a hat. Oh, boy.
01:12:41Who can eat a hat?
01:12:43I don't care. It looks good enough to eat.
01:12:45Say, is there any mail for me?
01:12:47Davy, isn't it wonderful?
01:12:49Well, it's pretty cute. A little impractical.
01:12:51No, I mean the news. What news?
01:12:53There's a convoy, Davy.
01:12:56Are you sure? Who told you?
01:12:58Yes, it just came back from Cebu with the news.
01:13:00Yeah, and that hat. We're gonna celebrate.
01:13:02Davy, may I speak to you for a minute?
01:13:08I thought you'd like to know.
01:13:09Mom McGregor's son's been wounded.
01:13:11He's here.
01:13:12Serious?
01:13:13I haven't seen him. I was just told he was here.
01:13:15Thanks.
01:13:16It's tough on the old battle-axe only boy, isn't he?
01:13:18Yeah, I think I'd better phone her.
01:13:29Davy. Davy.
01:13:36I told you I'd be back.
01:13:38Oh, for a minute I thought I was hearing voices.
01:13:42How long are you going to be here?
01:13:44Till morning. How are you, darling?
01:13:46I'm all right.
01:13:48You look pretty tired.
01:13:50I'm sort of glad there aren't 25 hours in the day.
01:13:53The news is wonderful, though, isn't it?
01:13:55Wonderful.
01:13:56I came over with Mom. How's the boy?
01:14:00His legs have been amputated.
01:14:02Both of them?
01:14:04There's nothing else they could do.
01:14:07Here she is.
01:14:10He's been calling for you.
01:14:12How is he?
01:14:26Hello, son.
01:14:30Hello, Mother.
01:14:32How do you feel?
01:14:34I'm going to be all right.
01:14:36A fine thing to waste an $18,000 pilot
01:14:39getting wounded with the infantry.
01:14:43A pain.
01:14:45I'm going to be all right.
01:14:47I'm going to be all right.
01:14:49I'm going to be all right.
01:14:51I'm going to be all right.
01:14:53A pain.
01:14:55In my toes.
01:14:57I got a terrible cramp, I guess.
01:15:02No, not that one, Mother. The other one.
01:15:04Oh, darling.
01:15:07What's the matter?
01:15:09Hey, what's the matter, Ma?
01:15:11Lie down, dear. Lie down.
01:15:13No, I want to see. I want to...
01:15:15Ma, my legs.
01:15:17Where's my legs?
01:15:19Ma, they promised me.
01:15:21Get away my legs.
01:15:23No, no, no.
01:15:37You all right?
01:15:39Yes.
01:15:41For a minute I thought I was going to be sick.
01:15:44Hold me, hold me close.
01:15:51I'm horrible, I know that.
01:15:53All the time I just kept thinking of you.
01:15:55Hey, take it easy.
01:15:57Nothing's going to happen to me.
01:16:21Nurse, Miss Davidson.
01:16:52Oh, sovereign Lord,
01:16:55who desireth not the death of a sinner,
01:16:59we beseech thee to loose the spirit of this, thy servant,
01:17:04and set him free from all evil,
01:17:09that he may rest with all thy saints
01:17:13in the eternal habitations.
01:17:16Do you want a drink of water?
01:17:18No, thank you, Davey.
01:17:20Oh, lie down for a moment.
01:17:22You know, it's all over.
01:17:26He never saw his father,
01:17:28and his son will never see him.
01:17:32He has a child?
01:17:34Three months old.
01:17:36It's a pattern that will go on, I suppose,
01:17:39till we do make the world a decent place to live in.
01:17:50Well, I guess we can go now.
01:17:53Thank you, Davey.
01:17:55I'm glad you called me so I could be here.
01:17:58I can't say anything, Ma.
01:18:00But can you say, what can I say?
01:18:04I bore a son and he's dead.
01:18:07I bore a son, a healthy, muscular child,
01:18:10who was a good son.
01:18:12It used to break my heart just to look at him.
01:18:14He was so beautiful.
01:18:16The handsomest son in the world.
01:18:19And now I have no heart to break.
01:18:23Like his father, he died for what he knew was right.
01:18:26He was right.
01:18:28My son and his father.
01:18:30And this time,
01:18:32if we don't make it right,
01:18:34my son and his father and all are dead
01:18:37will rise up and destroy us.
01:18:49I'm sending McGregor to Corregidor.
01:18:52So I want you and your staff
01:18:54to report to little Baggio in the morning.
01:18:56Take over in her place.
01:18:58Yes, sir.
01:19:00Do you know if there are any nurses coming on the convoy?
01:19:03What convoy?
01:19:05What convoy?
01:19:07The one we've been celebrating all day.
01:19:09There isn't any convoy.
01:19:11It's been sunk.
01:19:13It's been sunk.
01:19:15There have been desperate measures taken to get others through to us.
01:19:18But only a few small vessels have succeeded.
01:19:21Not enough to mean much.
01:19:25Is it as bad as all that?
01:19:29MacArthur left tonight.
01:19:33Left Bataan?
01:19:35He was ordered off. He's gone to Australia.
01:19:37But why?
01:19:39Because he's needed more than he needs.
01:19:42But why?
01:19:44Because he's needed more there than he is here, I guess.
01:19:47He didn't want to go.
01:19:51Maybe I'd better tell the others.
01:19:53No. Don't do anything about it.
01:19:57A good evening of relaxation might help.
01:20:00What they don't know won't hurt them.
01:20:04No, I suppose not.
01:20:06Especially when what they do now does.
01:20:10Good night, Janet.
01:20:12Good night, sir.
01:20:25Little Baggio, which was another hospital base,
01:20:28was high up in the Maravelis Mountains.
01:20:30It had been bombed some days before we arrived.
01:20:33The emperor himself apologized for the bombing.
01:20:36So sorry.
01:20:39When we got there, Davy made us make a huge cross
01:20:42with tarpaulins in front of the wards.
01:20:44She gave them the benefit of the doubt,
01:20:46though even she didn't doubt.
01:20:48Do you think this will do any good, Davy?
01:20:50I don't know.
01:20:51Perhaps we're only providing them with an easier target.
01:20:55I don't know whether that's an air raid warning or a mess.
01:20:58Either way, it's a warning.
01:21:00Come on, kids. Let's go eat our swaps.
01:21:03What's the matter, Ethel?
01:21:05I'm all right.
01:21:07Too much rich food, I guess.
01:21:09But who's in the children's ward?
01:21:11Joan. She said she didn't mind doing my shit.
01:21:14Come on. You need some rest.
01:21:16I'll take care of her.
01:21:18Thanks, Paris.
01:21:20I don't know how she does it.
01:21:22Who?
01:21:23Joan. She doesn't ever seem to get any sleep.
01:21:26I've never seen anybody do so much.
01:21:29I'm worried about her.
01:21:30Something seems to be driving her on.
01:21:32Go over and give her a hand, will you, Sadie?
01:21:34I'll relieve you later.
01:21:42That's really hitting below the belt.
01:21:50Davy! Davy!
01:22:00What happened to her?
01:22:01She made it.
01:22:02Oh, I warned her.
01:22:04Joan! Joan!
01:22:09No, no, no, no. You stay down there now.
01:22:11Sadie will take over.
01:22:13Nobody's going to take over for me. I feel fine now.
01:22:15Oh, Joan, don't.
01:22:17What you need is some sleep. That's what's wrong with you.
01:22:19I can't sleep.
01:22:20Well, maybe you can try.
01:22:22I can't. I don't want to sleep.
01:22:24I don't want to sleep.
01:22:26Well, maybe you can try.
01:22:28I can't. I don't want to sleep.
01:22:30All I do is dream about living.
01:22:33Now, Joan, you must forget that.
01:22:35That wasn't your fault.
01:22:36I know it was nobody's fault, but that's not it.
01:22:38Don't you understand? I've got to do what she'd have done, too.
01:22:41But that's not the point.
01:22:43I know what the point is.
01:22:45When we joined the Army, I don't know about the rest of you,
01:22:47but I had a feeling that we might be in a war,
01:22:49and I don't want to feel when this is over that maybe I could have done more.
01:22:52You're just trying to do too much.
01:22:54I told you when we joined the Red Cross, do you remember?
01:22:56I solemnly pledged myself before God that I'll devote myself
01:22:59to the welfare of those committed to my care,
01:23:02and I didn't say how many or how much.
01:23:05Joan, that's the way we all feel.
01:23:07Maybe we do a lot of grousing sometimes,
01:23:09but that's one of the privileges we're fighting for.
01:23:12Now, all I ask you to do is lie down for an hour or so,
01:23:16and then you can do whatever you want.
01:23:18Thanks. That's all I want in my own way.
01:23:21Come on.
01:23:24Come on now. You lie down here for a little while.
01:23:26Oh, thanks, Davy. I feel better.
01:23:32You know, that's the first time in my life I've ever fainted.
01:23:35Before the war, many's the time I could have used a good faint,
01:23:38but the guys I know would have thought it was a phony I wasn't taking any chances.
01:23:42Uh-oh. There's my dream hero.
01:23:44Davy, don't say anything. No, I won't.
01:23:46Now, what are you doing down here again?
01:23:49Kansas, what's wrong?
01:23:54We're getting the Panspeed office.
01:23:56You're not quitting Kansas.
01:23:58No, we're just making what's known as a strategic withdrawal.
01:24:02Well, Kansas, how bad is it?
01:24:06The whole front line's collapsed.
01:24:08Oh.
01:24:13That bandage is filthy. Come on in, Kansas. I'll change it for you.
01:24:19I know how short you must be, but have you got anything to eat?
01:24:23Yes, I've got some nice southern fried monkey for you.
01:24:26With ketchup?
01:24:28No, with chili sauce.
01:24:35I'm sorry to interrupt, Colonel.
01:24:37What is it, Janet?
01:24:39I just heard that the front line's collapsed.
01:24:41Well, you know there are lots of rumors. Thousands of them going around.
01:24:44I don't think this is a rumor.
01:24:48Well, what do you want?
01:24:50You've got to get those girls out.
01:24:52There's to be no evacuation in Bataan.
01:24:54But you've got to. They're sick, every one of them.
01:24:57They're only going through the motions.
01:25:00Give them a rest so they can work.
01:25:02You're doing more for morale than anything else in this sector.
01:25:04Just seeing you girls around is almost enough.
01:25:06If I were to evacuate you now, can't you understand the panic that would develop?
01:25:09I know, Colonel.
01:25:10It's the very thing the Japs would want.
01:25:12If you leave, the civilians would leave.
01:25:14Women and children would clog the roads, and there's a desperate battle going on.
01:25:18I'm sorry. Of course you're right.
01:25:20Don't worry, Janet.
01:25:22When the time comes, I'll get you out.
01:25:24Otherwise, I'd never be able to look my wife or any other woman in the face again.
01:25:30I don't envy you, Colonel.
01:25:46Look at me!
01:25:51Look at me!
01:26:05Put them down! Get them under the bed!
01:26:16Now, myself, say, tell me where the children's head is!
01:26:19Spudge.
01:26:24Rosemary, take cover. I can do this all right.
01:26:27I'm not frightened any longer, Jose.
01:26:49Come on!
01:27:10Come on! Come over here!
01:27:19Come on!
01:27:32Come on!
01:27:34Come on!
01:27:36Let her bearers!
01:27:41Get me to the floor!
01:27:49Come on!
01:27:58What is it?
01:27:59It's a leg wound, Lieutenant Summers.
01:28:03I'll tell Davy.
01:28:08Lieutenant Summers has been wounded.
01:28:10What is it?
01:28:11A leg wound.
01:28:12Thank you, Chief.
01:28:19The machine gunner! They're strafing!
01:28:21Beast of slimy beasts!
01:28:34Joplin!
01:28:40Ah, they've finished the operation for me.
01:28:43Rosemary!
01:28:48Rosemary!
01:28:50Rosemary!
01:29:00It's the surgery.
01:29:02Rosemary, here, take this.
01:29:06Come back!
01:29:08Rosemary!
01:29:14Oh!
01:29:25Rosemary!
01:29:26Don't go in there!
01:29:29Let it burn!
01:29:35Oh, your hand, Davy!
01:29:37Your hand!
01:29:44How is he, Chief?
01:29:45His temperature is rising and the wound looks bad.
01:29:47The fragment should be removed immediately.
01:29:50There isn't time. We've been ordered off.
01:29:52Ordered off?
01:29:53To Corregidor.
01:29:55Chief, get him into a truck.
01:29:56I have to report to the Colonel, but I'll be right back.
01:29:58Yes, Davy.
01:30:00Litter!
01:30:13I got everyone, sir. We're ready to leave.
01:30:15Good.
01:30:17Goodbye, Janet.
01:30:18Aren't you coming?
01:30:19No, I'm not.
01:30:20But your orders!
01:30:21Your orders have just come through.
01:30:24Have we surrendered?
01:30:26We'll surrender at nine in the morning.
01:30:27Oh, no.
01:30:29They haven't got us off yet!
01:30:30No, I think it's the demolition squads blowing up our dumps.
01:30:33Come on, you'd better go.
01:30:39Joan, have you seen Chief?
01:30:40No, I haven't. I don't think he's left yet.
01:30:42You haven't time, Janet!
01:30:44Janet, do one thing for me.
01:30:45See that those girls get through to the rock.
01:30:47Yes, sir. We'll get through.
01:30:49So long.
01:30:50Good luck.
01:30:58But before we reached the main road, everybody heard the news.
01:31:01Panic developed and the roads were jammed.
01:31:04Normally, it took two hours to get to Maravelis.
01:31:07That day, it took eight.
01:31:08And the Jap reconnaissance saw what was happening,
01:31:11so by the time we got there,
01:31:12it was being bombed and shelled without mercy.
01:31:29Hurry up! Get into the tunnel!
01:31:31Amy!
01:31:32Oh, thank God you got through.
01:31:34Did you pass T on the road?
01:31:35No.
01:31:36Where are the children?
01:31:37Kansas found a shelter for them.
01:31:38Get down!
01:31:41Get down!
01:31:48Come on!
01:32:01Listen, we still have a few minutes.
01:32:02Keep undercover.
01:32:04If I'm not back,
01:32:05get down to the wharf as soon as you hear the boat whistle.
01:32:11Ming-Chi!
01:32:13Ming-Chi!
01:32:15Ming-Chi!
01:32:19Ming-Chi!
01:32:27Oh, I have to get some sleep.
01:32:28I'm so happy.
01:32:29Nothing else matters.
01:32:33Stay here.
01:32:34But I thought you said I could have one shot.
01:32:36Later on.
01:32:37You've been detailed to watch over your little sister.
01:32:42Hello.
01:32:43Hi, Kansas.
01:32:44I can't believe it.
01:32:45I just can't believe it.
01:32:47What?
01:32:48The Marines.
01:32:49They've landed.
01:32:50They've been ordered off.
01:32:52Oh, but it's not permanent.
01:32:53It's not the end of the fight.
01:32:54Yeah, but imagine having to us, Americans.
01:32:57All right.
01:32:58All out, everybody.
01:32:59Oh, we've been out on our feet before.
01:33:01Remember Valley Forge?
01:33:02That was no strawberry festival.
01:33:04Come on, kids.
01:33:05Let's go.
01:33:12So long.
01:33:13What do you mean, so long?
01:33:14I've got to get the other kids.
01:33:15Well, I'll have two then.
01:33:28How soon are you pulling out?
01:33:29Now.
01:33:30Well, I'll get the next boat.
01:33:31There isn't going to be any next boat.
01:33:32Well, go ahead then.
01:33:33Come on.
01:33:42Do you have John?
01:33:43Yes, in the tunnel.
01:33:44I have a doctor.
01:33:49John.
01:33:53Where are the others?
01:33:54You better go.
01:33:55There's plenty of time.
01:33:57All right, I'm running.
01:34:12You have to go in for that bomb fragment.
01:34:14It may become infected.
01:34:16That's not likely.
01:34:17It's probably a piece of good American steel.
01:34:20Hm.
01:34:21All right, nurse.
01:34:23Oh.
01:34:24Will you help?
01:34:25If I can.
01:34:28Sorry we have no anesthetic here, eh?
01:34:31No anesthetic.
01:34:32No anesthetic.
01:34:33No anesthetic.
01:34:34No anesthetic.
01:34:35No anesthetic.
01:34:36No anesthetic.
01:34:37No anesthetic.
01:34:38No anesthetic.
01:34:39No anesthetic.
01:34:40No anesthetic here, eh?
01:34:42Is it out of order if we hold hands?
01:34:44No.
01:34:45Go ahead.
01:34:56It's all right, darling.
01:34:57It's all right.
01:34:59I think I've located it.
01:35:01I'll have another try.
01:35:02Now, this may hurt.
01:35:04Sounds just like a dentist.
01:35:06Tell him no matter what happens, promise me you won't let me.
01:35:09I know I won't, dear.
01:35:12Just hold on, Lieutenant.
01:35:14Try to think of something else.
01:35:16I am.
01:35:17Ham and eggs.
01:35:19Hotcakes.
01:35:21White bread.
01:35:23Coffee.
01:35:25Here it comes now.
01:35:26Hold on.
01:35:33It's all right, Doctor.
01:35:34Go right ahead.
01:35:35He's fainted.
01:35:40Get in.
01:35:41Go ahead.
01:35:42He's up front.
01:35:43Go ahead.
01:35:44Hurry up.
01:35:45They can't understand a word you're saying.
01:35:46I know, but they know what I'm feeling.
01:35:49Well, so long.
01:35:50What do you mean, so long?
01:35:51Aren't you coming?
01:35:52No.
01:35:53Oh, you're going to be a hero.
01:35:54Yeah.
01:35:55OK, you win.
01:35:56Shut your eyes.
01:35:57What for?
01:35:58Because I'm going to kiss you goodbye.
01:35:59Oh.
01:36:10Oh.
01:36:33I have a boat hidden right here.
01:36:40Oh.
01:36:41Oh.
01:36:42No.
01:36:43Oh.
01:36:44Oh.
01:36:45No.
01:36:46Oh.
01:36:47No.
01:36:55Hey, Tove.
01:36:56Yes.
01:36:57Hurry up.
01:36:58Get in.
01:36:59Hey.
01:37:00Is there any room?
01:37:01Sorry, soldier, but one more would swamp us.
01:37:03Can you swim?
01:37:04A bit.
01:37:05Well, hang on and kick.
01:37:06Thanks, ladies.
01:37:09Are you holding on, soldier?
01:37:24Still, ma'am.
01:37:29You're still with us, soldier?
01:37:44Might as well take one minute's rest.
01:37:53No, I can use it too.
01:38:03Look at those lights.
01:38:04It's so regular, it seems like a message.
01:38:09It is a message.
01:38:11Three dots.
01:38:12Three dashes.
01:38:13Three dots.
01:38:16That's so it.
01:38:18That's so it.
01:38:31And then Corregidor.
01:38:33It spells safety for us because everyone called it the Gibraltar of the Pacific.
01:38:38Especially so since the Army engineers had dug a series of tunnels down under 400 feet of solid rock.
01:38:44The main tunnel was called Malinta.
01:38:47This was about 1,000 feet long.
01:38:49And in peacetime, trolleys ran through it.
01:38:52There were about 40 laterals off the main tunnel.
01:38:55The one in which we were to spend most of our time was called the hospital lateral.
01:38:59Here, the wounded were piled up in double and triple-decker beds.
01:39:04Another was our quarters.
01:39:06There were about 25 nurses there when we arrived.
01:39:09With us, the total came to 88 Americans plus many more Filipino nurses.
01:39:14Here, for the first time in months, we had a chance to wash the geps out of our hair.
01:39:19For a few days, we were even able to get outside the hospital tunnel for a little fresh air.
01:39:28And then they started.
01:39:30They plastered us but good, constantly.
01:39:35As they stepped up their tempo, things got tougher and tougher.
01:39:38The thunder of the dive bombers was incessant.
01:39:41The noise almost split our eardrums.
01:39:44The old story, too little food, dwindling ammunition, too many people and too many wounded.
01:39:51Gradually, Corregidor felt like and became a prison.
01:39:56And though everything else was giving out, we thanked God for the blood plasma the Red Cross had supplied us with.
01:40:03Occasionally, between bombings, we went outside and took our chances on a shell rather than suffocation.
01:40:09We listened hopefully for news of home.
01:40:11But the geps jammed everything except the commercials advertising food.
01:40:15Delicious salad with whatever you have at hand.
01:40:17Pineapples, strawberries or any of the plentiful fruits about us.
01:40:21Cooled deliciously in your icebox, it will bring sunny California to your home.
01:40:26Shut that thing off.
01:40:30What, no dive bombers?
01:40:32Oh, it's not time. They're still out to lunch.
01:40:36There's no quinine left.
01:40:39Well, what are we going to do?
01:40:41Nurse, what do you think we're going to do?
01:40:43They can take us off. Why are we here anyway?
01:40:46Why? Why isn't there any quinine? Why isn't there any food? Why aren't there any supplies?
01:40:52Why are we waiting here like rats in a cage waiting for the man to come and pour scalding water over us?
01:40:58Why was nothing done? Why?
01:41:00Take it easy, Dee.
01:41:02I'll tell you why. It's our own fault.
01:41:04Our fault? What did we do?
01:41:06Because we believed we were the world.
01:41:08That the United States of America was the whole world.
01:41:11Those outlandish places.
01:41:13Bataan, Corregidor, Mindanao.
01:41:16Those aren't American names.
01:41:18No, they're just American graveyards.
01:41:21Well, why don't they get us off?
01:41:23They can't get us off.
01:41:25We've become what they call a delaying action.
01:41:28That's what those 50,000 men over there were.
01:41:30They were merely saving time.
01:41:33I hope to God the people back home aren't losing it for us.
01:41:36Do you remember what the chaplain once told us?
01:41:39It's our present. We're giving them time.
01:41:44Well, they're always on time anyway.
01:41:48Everybody in the house!
01:41:59Oh!
01:42:03I can't stand it anymore!
01:42:05I can't! I want to get out of here!
01:42:19Feeling better, Tony?
01:42:21Much thanks. I'm sorry I blew up yesterday.
01:42:23Guess I had a case of the heebie-jeebies.
01:42:25Don't worry about it.
01:42:27You know, the showers are about the only cold showers we get around here.
01:42:30Maybe you could use one.
01:42:32What do you think I was doing yesterday when I shot my mouth off?
01:42:35I feel better, too.
01:42:38Hello, Mom.
01:42:40What you got there?
01:42:42My grandson.
01:42:44Oh, he's cute.
01:42:46He looks just like...
01:42:48Yes, he does. Particularly at that age.
01:42:53That's what I have to live for.
01:42:55Oh, Janet, can I speak to you a minute?
01:42:57What are you doing down here? We discharged you a week ago.
01:43:00I thought you knew I was your permanent patient.
01:43:02What is it, darling?
01:43:04I just wanted to say goodbye for a few days.
01:43:06What are you talking about?
01:43:08Well, we sort of made up a little party,
01:43:10and we're going down around Mindanao to see if we can find some quinine.
01:43:13You can't go.
01:43:15Why not?
01:43:17Your leg. You're still too weak.
01:43:19I'm no weaker than the rest.
01:43:21John, you're not well yet.
01:43:23It's a lot worse if we don't get some supplies.
01:43:29When do you have to go?
01:43:31We leave at 5 in the morning.
01:43:33That's nine long hours from now.
01:43:41Mom, I want you to know I'm going to break a regulation.
01:43:45Is that something new with you?
01:43:50But I'm really going to smash one this time.
01:43:52I'm going to get married.
01:43:56To him?
01:44:02I'll get Chaplain Frank. Can we get married here, Ma?
01:44:04No, I don't know about this officially.
01:44:06Better not in the tunnels.
01:44:08I know the bakery.
01:44:10It's still standing, and they've light there.
01:44:12In the meantime, I'll get dressed.
01:44:14Dressed into what?
01:44:16Maybe we can fix up one of your skirts.
01:44:18Just so the whole thing isn't too confusing.
01:44:23Dear God,
01:44:25we have none of the things which are usually used
01:44:28to solemnize marriage in this one,
01:44:31except the thing that you prize most,
01:44:34sincerity of heart,
01:44:36amid all the boiling hatred,
01:44:39both righteous and unrighteous.
01:44:44Two of your servants, Lord, have found love
01:44:47and desire to be wed in thine eyes.
01:44:50Help me, O Lord, to consecrate this marriage.
01:44:59And now,
01:45:01John,
01:45:03wilt thou have this woman to thy wedded wife
01:45:06to have and to hold?
01:45:08Wilt thou love her, honor her,
01:45:10comfort her in sickness and in health,
01:45:14and, forsaking all others,
01:45:17keep her till death do you part?
01:45:20I will.
01:45:24Janet,
01:45:27wilt thou have this man to thy wedded husband
01:45:32to have and to hold?
01:45:39I will.
01:45:43I will.
01:45:47I then pronounce you man and wife.
01:45:50God bless you both.
01:45:55That's... that's where you kiss, kid.
01:46:01Okay, break it up.
01:46:05Here's your wedding present. It's the best I could do.
01:46:08A bottle of wine.
01:46:10Where did you get that?
01:46:12The general. I told him I needed to get drunk,
01:46:14and he was so surprised he gave it to me.
01:46:16And peanut butter and bread.
01:46:18What a wonderful present.
01:46:21This bit of jade.
01:46:23It's some 2,000 years old.
01:46:25Keep it,
01:46:27for there are three wishes that go with it.
01:46:30Good luck, long life,
01:46:33and an abundance of children.
01:46:36Thank you, Chief. Thanks for everything.
01:46:38I have nothing to offer except a bit of gum.
01:46:41We'll take it.
01:46:43Now go ahead and have your honeymoon.
01:46:46Thank you. Thank you, Chaplain.
01:46:48God bless you both. Good night.
01:46:51Peanut butter. I wonder if...
01:46:54No, leave them alone.
01:46:56Come with me, and I'll see if I can dig some up for you.
01:46:58Good.
01:47:05I'm not going to eat any more. I'm going to save some.
01:47:07Not me. This isn't the kind of wedding cake
01:47:09you put under your pillow and sleep on.
01:47:13The stars look like streetlights.
01:47:15They are.
01:47:17Haven't you ever been to the Rainbow Room before?
01:47:19That's the street below us.
01:47:21Oh. Oh.
01:47:24I guess marrying you has changed my perspective completely.
01:47:27It's probably the wine.
01:47:30I thought you were going to take me to a dingy little French restaurant.
01:47:33This is pretty classy.
01:47:35We can't. You remember everything I say.
01:47:39I take you very seriously.
01:47:45What is it, darling?
01:47:49Did I ever tell you about my place in the country?
01:47:51No.
01:47:54No, I don't know anything about you, really.
01:47:58I don't even know if you have a middle name.
01:48:00I have.
01:48:02It's Mattathias.
01:48:04Oh. Why?
01:48:06An uncle. He left me this little farm I was telling you about.
01:48:08It's quite worth it.
01:48:10Is it?
01:48:12Yes, and you'll love it.
01:48:15Time will come when you and I will go out on a summer evening
01:48:18and the grass is fresh,
01:48:20the clouds white as if they'd just been washed,
01:48:23the earth's warm and still,
01:48:26time passes quietly.
01:48:29Everything's simple.
01:48:31Just you and me and the kids.
01:48:33Sons?
01:48:35Daughters. They're more decorative.
01:48:37Let's get out of here and go home.
01:48:40Home.
01:48:47I remember a poet somewhere.
01:48:49He said home is the place where,
01:48:52when you have to go there, they have to take you in.
01:48:57You want to know something?
01:48:59What?
01:49:01I'm not afraid any longer.
01:49:19Darling.
01:49:21Darling.
01:49:23It's time to get up.
01:49:25It's time to get up and go to work.
01:49:27It's time to get up and go to work.
01:49:31You've only got five minutes.
01:49:38Fine time to go to sleep on our honeymoon.
01:49:41It was a wonderful honeymoon.
01:49:45Here, finish that up.
01:49:46No, you.
01:49:47Go ahead.
01:49:49As my grandmother used to say, it'll warm your stomach up.
01:49:51You, honey.
01:49:58To us.
01:50:11Here's your breakfast.
01:50:13Thank you.
01:50:21Lieutenant Summers.
01:50:23Yes, sir.
01:50:25Yes, sir.
01:50:27I just want to wish you good luck.
01:50:28Thank you, sir.
01:50:34So long, Lieutenant.
01:50:36So long, Lieutenant.
01:50:39So long, Davy.
01:50:41Good luck, G.
01:50:43We'll take care of you.
01:50:44Don't worry, I will.
01:50:48Wait for me here. I'll be back.
01:50:51I'll be right here.
01:50:55I'll be right here.
01:51:25I'll be right here.
01:51:40What are you doing?
01:51:42This radio is on the blink again.
01:51:46What would you like better than anything else in the world?
01:51:49A tomato. I'd give my left knee for a tomato.
01:51:52Tomato and some flying fortresses.
01:51:54Wouldn't that make a lovely salad?
01:51:56Yeah.
01:51:57Why did you ask me, Kansas?
01:51:59Well, I got something for you.
01:52:01Oh.
01:52:02Chocolate.
01:52:03Oh, gee, Kansas, that's swell of you.
01:52:07Where'd you get it?
01:52:09Well, a raiding pie of Japs tried to land last night, and I got me a couple of them.
01:52:13And on one of them was...
01:52:16Kansas, how could you do a thing like that to me?
01:52:20I can't figure you dames out.
01:52:22Chocolate? It's chocolate.
01:52:24You're positively disgusting.
01:52:27And don't fiddle with that, you'll get a shock.
01:52:29Who, me? I never get shocked.
01:52:34Look, don't you ever say don't to me again.
01:52:40There, see?
01:52:41Attention, you fools on Krakatoa.
01:52:43This is the son of heaven's birthday, our Emperor Hirohito.
01:52:47We wish you to help us celebrate.
01:52:49You will not object, I am sure, for you are the objector of bonsai.
01:52:57Terrorists! Terrorists!
01:53:00The brutal moment.
01:53:02This is like living on a bullseye.
01:53:05That was the worst pasting we ever got.
01:53:08I think they must have hit every inch of the island that day.
01:53:11Then suddenly, like magic, late in the afternoon, it stopped.
01:53:15When they all went off to get drunk,
01:53:17to celebrate their god, Hirohito.
01:53:20This quiet.
01:53:22It's like the tropics you read about in romance magazines.
01:53:25They'll celebrate all night long.
01:53:27I hope they have the biggest hangover the world has ever known.
01:53:30$4,100, $400,000.
01:53:34I guess this is what they call hard money.
01:53:36$4,020, $80,000.
01:53:40Say, what goes on here?
01:53:42They're destroying money.
01:53:44That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.
01:53:46We ought to notify the authorities or something.
01:53:48They are the authorities. They're from the finance department.
01:53:51First time I ever even saw enough money to burn.
01:53:54All the nurses are wanted in the mess hall.
01:53:56Not for food? Don't tell me.
01:53:58No, right away.
01:53:59$4,020, $80,000.
01:54:03Attention, everybody, please.
01:54:07Colonel Clark has something to tell you.
01:54:09Thank you, Captain. At ease.
01:54:15This is a very serious occasion.
01:54:18It is not known how much longer Corregidor can hold out.
01:54:23I'm afraid so, Captain.
01:54:25I'm afraid so, Captain.
01:54:27I'm afraid so, Captain.
01:54:29It is not known how much longer Corregidor can hold out.
01:54:35I have here orders from headquarters.
01:54:38You nurses are to be evacuated tonight to Australia.
01:54:42You'll meet in front of the main hospital tunnel at 9 o'clock tonight.
01:54:46These orders are secret.
01:54:50I want you to know that in the name of General Wainwright and myself...
01:54:54there are no words high enough to praise you all.
01:54:59Good luck.
01:55:07Captain.
01:55:11Oh, look, Ma, couldn't another one of the girls go in my place?
01:55:13I haven't any family in it. Doesn't matter.
01:55:15Ma, I just assumed...
01:55:16These are official orders.
01:55:19I know what you're all thinking.
01:55:21But the entire nurse corps has been ordered off.
01:55:24You girls just happen to be the first.
01:55:26You can pack one handbag or your musette. That's all.
01:55:29There's just one other thing.
01:55:31These orders must be kept secret.
01:55:33You're to tell no one.
01:55:35I'll see you later.
01:55:44What are you doing?
01:55:45Oh, nothing. Just cleaning house.
01:55:48Oh.
01:55:57Irma.
01:55:58Yeah?
01:56:00Do you know anybody that could take a letter out to the States?
01:56:03It was to my mother.
01:56:05Yes, I think I know someone.
01:56:08I'll give it to him.
01:56:10Thanks, pal.
01:56:26Hi.
01:56:44I've got to get some fresh air out.
01:56:46See you kids around.
01:56:57Here, George.
01:56:58I found another fountain pen, so you can have this one.
01:57:01Thanks, Joanie.
01:57:07Here, Joe.
01:57:08You've had your eye on this for some time.
01:57:11Okay, Joe.
01:57:12Okay, Joe.
01:57:16I know we're short of things to read here,
01:57:18and I found some old love letters of mine.
01:57:21I'll just put them here,
01:57:23so you have a kind of circulating library.
01:57:26They're pretty funny.
01:57:27Maybe they'll give you some laughs.
01:57:37Who's that?
01:57:38It's me, Kansas.
01:57:40Hiya, kid.
01:57:44Can I talk to you for a minute?
01:57:46Sure.
01:57:47Keep your mind on the gun, Chuck.
01:57:49Okay.
01:57:54We've been ordered off, Kansas.
01:57:56I know.
01:57:57It's all over the rock already.
01:58:00Well, I came to say goodbye.
01:58:04Well, I'm glad you did.
01:58:07Goodbye.
01:58:09If you don't wait for me, I'll break your neck.
01:58:12I'll be sure you don't break yours.
01:58:15Goodbye.
01:58:16Goodbye.
01:58:17Goodbye.
01:58:18Goodbye.
01:58:19Goodbye.
01:58:20Goodbye.
01:58:21That must be your bottle.
01:58:23Yourotto is undrinkable,
01:58:24but it's gone, Hansom.
01:58:27It must be yours.
01:58:30Give me a Loney handkerchief, will you?
01:58:33And stop your sniffling.
01:58:34No, why don't you?
01:58:36You know I can't help it.
01:58:37It's a habit with me.
01:58:38Well, I can't either.
01:58:42When you get back, you should get some real ones.
01:58:44I used to get mine for five and dimes,
01:58:48big red ones, remember?
01:58:50You might send me a dozen of them when you get back.
01:58:53Where, Kansas?
01:58:55Here? What do you think?
01:58:57I'll be here till Tokyo freezes over.
01:59:00I suppose if we were to surrender that you'd be dumb enough not to.
01:59:05Yeah, I'd be dumb that way.
01:59:08Oh, Kansas.
01:59:15We should have been doing more of this in the campaign.
01:59:18You and your wanting to be pals.
01:59:21I thought you were just another guy on the make.
01:59:23I was.
01:59:29Jim, glad I met her for the Kansas.
01:59:32Glad it's been all mine.
01:59:37You big blimp.
01:59:42Well, so long, kid.
01:59:45I'll be seeing you.
01:59:47Goodbye, and be careful. Don't get killed.
01:59:50Who, me?
01:59:52I never get killed.
02:00:12Well, there you are, Odoo.
02:00:17Well, I guess that's everybody.
02:00:20Good luck to you children. All of you.
02:00:25Goodbye, David. I'm not going.
02:00:27You're not what?
02:00:29I'm not going. I never intended to.
02:00:31You heard the orders. Now, I don't want any funny business. Get in that boat.
02:00:34No. Do you realize every moment of stalling here means that those planes in the harbor are in danger?
02:00:39That's not our artillery.
02:00:41I can't go. I promised I'd be here when he got back. He asked me to.
02:00:44There's no reason why. I order you to go.
02:00:46I won't take orders. I'm not in the army anymore.
02:00:49When I married, I broke regulations. It meant I was out.
02:00:52You can't make me go.
02:00:54Stop talking like a hysterical schoolgirl.
02:00:56I'm going to be right here when he gets back.
02:00:59He won't be back.
02:01:01How do you know? Tell me, how do you know?
02:01:04There's been no word at all. They considered them officially lost for a week.
02:01:07You're lying. You know you're lying. You're just saying...
02:01:10Would I lie about that, David? Would I?
02:01:13I know he's still alive. He's out there somewhere. I can't go. I can't.
02:01:17Janet, if he's alive, he'll find you.
02:01:19Let me go. I'm not going. Don't.
02:01:29David.
02:01:31Was she hit?
02:01:32No, she's just stunned. Get her in the boat.
02:01:44But she wasn't like the rest of us. She never gave way.
02:01:47But now everything snapped at once.
02:01:50When we got her on board the plane, she never spoke again.
02:01:54Maybe we should have left her on Corregidor.
02:01:57What's happened would have happened some way or another.
02:02:00Thank you. Thank you all very much.
02:02:06Now I think maybe I can try to make her speak.
02:02:09To hear, at least.
02:02:12To hear, at least.
02:02:21Miss Davidson, we're almost home.
02:02:23You hear me? We're almost home.
02:02:30Cherners.
02:02:33I have a letter for you.
02:02:42My darling.
02:02:44I'm writing this from Mindanao.
02:02:46We leave in the morning for an unknown destination.
02:02:49I write with no so-called premonitions.
02:02:52As a matter of fact, I'm writing this in a pleasant little bar on the outskirts.
02:02:56I've ordered two daiquiris.
02:02:59One for you and one for me.
02:03:04I miss you.
02:03:06I miss you all the time.
02:03:08I miss you.
02:03:10I miss you all the time.
02:03:12It was such a short time, wasn't it?
02:03:15And yet I remember every second of it.
02:03:18From the moment you washed my back and I could use a good bath right now...
02:03:22...till your face faded from view in the darkness when I left.
02:03:30I think about you all the time and wish things were different.
02:03:34Things will be different.
02:03:36I know that now because there is good in this war much as I hate it.
02:03:41This is not just a war of soldiers.
02:03:44You weren't soldiers in the strict sense.
02:03:47You were just kids from all walks of life.
02:03:50All kinds of people.
02:03:52There's something new in this war.
02:03:55Something good.
02:03:57You could see it, this new thing, even in their tired, hungry faces...
02:04:01...as they took courage one from another.
02:04:04This is not a people's war because civilians also get killed.
02:04:08It's the people's war because they have taken it over now...
02:04:11...and are going to win it and end it with a purpose.
02:04:14To live like men with dignity and freedom.
02:04:17This is the good I've found.
02:04:20There's a small voice whispering around the earth...
02:04:23...and the people are beginning to talk across their boundaries.
02:04:26This voice will grow in volume until it thunders all over the world.
02:04:30It's what you said and what Jose said and what Rosemary felt and Olivia.
02:04:35It's the rage that made Kansas cry.
02:04:37It says, this is our war now and this time it'll be our peace.
02:04:45I'm proud. Proud to have known you.
02:04:48Proud to have received your love.
02:04:51Already I've had a complete, rich life in three short months.
02:04:57I'm enclosing a deed at that little farm I told you about.
02:05:00It's now in your name.
02:05:03I'll wait for you there.
02:05:05Or if you're there first, wait for me.
02:05:09Thank you. Thank you, my darling, for my life.
02:05:13Thank you for everything.
02:05:16You're devoted.
02:05:18And this is the first time I've ever written it.
02:05:21You're a devoted husband.
02:05:24John.
