00:00The police blitz kicked off in January and ran through till the start of June, ending
00:06just over a month ago, prompting just so many arrests.
00:092,700 people arrested in that period.
00:13Those people charged with 7,500 offences relating to family and domestic violence incidents.
00:20The blitz focused on a large area across southeast Melbourne, the local government areas of Casey,
00:26Frankston, Greater Dandenong and the Mornington Peninsula, and Cardinia as well.
00:30Police say those areas have some of the highest rates of family violence offending in the
00:35state.
00:36Casey, the local government area, right at the top of the list.
00:40Police say the blitz involved dedicated police operations in that area, as well as proactive
00:45opportunities to reach out to known offenders and known victims to ensure there wasn't repeat
00:51offending going undetected.
00:53Unfortunately, many people arrested were breaching intervention orders taken out against them.
01:00Several horrific stories coming out from the blitz, including one man who allegedly threatened
01:05his partner with a machete, assaulting her, injuring her hand.
01:10He's been arrested and charged with a number of offences, including breaching an intervention
01:15order multiple times.
01:17He's now in remand and due to face court later this year.
01:20Police say there's been a 3% rise in alleged family violence incidents across Victoria
01:25over the past year, police responding to 96,000 incidents.
01:30They're certainly encouraging anyone at risk to reach out for help if they can.
01:34There's support services available, and also support services available to people who might
01:38be worried about their own behaviour, as police try to curb what is such a serious issue.
