00:33Burglars and car thieves were the biggest target, with 1,650 arrests carried out.
00:39And of them, more than 65 per cent were for children aged between 10 and 17.
00:43We're seeing people steal cars and then they're speeding at excessive speeds up the freeway.
00:49Just last night in the city's outer west, officers were led on a high-speed chase that
00:54started in Berwick after a 16-year-old boy allegedly stole a car from a home.
00:59He was spotted by police travelling at 200 kilometres an hour on the Princess Highway
01:03in Narre Warren, before almost crashing into another car.
01:08Officers deployed tyre spikes, but the car continued to race up the Monash Freeway, again
01:12at high speed, before being dumped in Dandenong North.
01:16Members of the dog squad found the 16-year-old hiding nearby.
01:20A 16-year-old criminal with no driving experience, hooning down the highway with complete disregard
01:26and reckless abandon in relation to any consideration for everyone else.
01:30It's just disgraceful.
01:31The 16-year-old has been charged with multiple offences, including theft of a motor vehicle
01:36and reckless conduct endangering life.
01:39This afternoon, he was granted bail and he'll face a children's court at a later date.
