M'sia-Taiwan crosstalk show brings joy

On the opening night of the Malaysia-Taiwan Crosstalk show at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur on July 2, waves of laughters and cheers erupted across a packed hall as several comedians took turns performing on stage.  Similar to Western stand-up comedy, crosstalk also known as xiangsheng or comic dialogue is a traditional Chinese comedic performance art, where performers partake in comedic banter rich in puns and allusions. 00:35MCA President Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Kha Siong, who launched the event, said

00:40comedy was an important form of Chinese culture

00:44and efforts must be made to preserve and pass on the culture.

00:48From what we have seen today,

00:52you can see that xiangsheng is a form of Chinese culture.

01:01We must promote xiangsheng even more.

01:06I think we are not alone in promoting Chinese culture all the way.

01:16MCA Vice-President Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Kha Siong also said

01:20MCA is committed towards efforts to promote Chinese culture

01:23in broader multicultural Malaysian society.

01:26Malaysia is a multicultural country.

01:31It is very important for all ethnicities to be united.

01:45The crosstalk program was a five-day event starting July 2,

01:49featuring comedy shows at five locations in Selangor and Johor.
