00:00:00We're here in Seattle. An AOS matchup on the show. It's the Houston Astros taking on the
00:00:18Seattle Mariners. Alongside Chris Singleton, I'm John Schaumbi, singing a guy who could
00:00:23change this game with one swing of the bat, Edgar Martinez. He of course leads their team
00:00:28in home runs. Yeah, Boog, he's been such a force at the plate and it seems like every
00:00:33time he connects, the ball is traveling out of the ballpark. So when you have such a threat
00:00:37like that, other guys in the lineup should get good pitches to hit because they're trying
00:00:41to get those outs instead of having to face him in a big situation. Very dominant his
00:00:46last time out, picked up the win, only allowed one run. These guys would love to see him
00:00:52back on his game in this one. Okay, all set to go. And here's the rookie center fielder
00:01:01Jose. The pitch. And first offering is fouled off. And the pitch. Check swing, but he went
00:01:26too far. And it's 0-2. And that's outside. The 1-2. Tapped at the plate, but it's a foul
00:01:47ball. Here's a 1-2. Out to short. Throws across the diamond. 1-up, 1-down. Now we check out
00:02:09the Astros lineup. And a big factor for them in recent games, Carlos Correa. Coming up
00:02:16on 100 RBIs, which is really exciting for everybody to see a guy get to that number.
00:02:21I mean, this is a guy that's able to slow the game down. You see him at times step out,
00:02:26take a deep breath when he's got runners on base. Just seemed to be able to lock in, really
00:02:30have a good focus and drive in those runs in big spots. Craig Biggio up next for the
00:02:36Astros. Biggio hitting better against right-handers this year. So some reverse splits there. The
00:02:54other way. And he takes it himself for the out. To out, space is empty. And here's the
00:03:10veteran outfielder, Luis Gonzalez. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average.
00:03:17But one of the things in today's game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties
00:03:22and lefties. They're so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris. And it's huge when you don't
00:03:27have to sit a guy or platoon him. When you can hit both sides in terms of pitcher's arms,
00:03:32you're a guy that it's hard to take out of the lineup. And I think it's very important today
00:03:36when everything is under the microscope. So a foul ball makes it one and two.
00:03:46No score just getting started top of the first. And a swing and a miss down on strikes. And that's
00:04:00the third out. Astros go down one, two, three. So now the Mariners offense gets to go to work
00:04:07for the first time. We've got no score. You're watching Major League Baseball on the show.
00:04:17We go to the bottom of the first. And on the mound now, Mike Scott. What should we keep an eye on
00:04:22here? Well, last time out picked up the win. Didn't allow a run. Pitched extremely well.
00:04:28It doesn't have to be perfect, but if he can give another performance like last time out,
00:04:32his team will be happy. Bottom of the first. And now here's a speed threat. Outfielder, Ichiro
00:04:39Suzuki. Here comes a pinch.
00:04:46Drops one down in front of the plate. And there's one away.
00:04:54And now we check out the Mariners lineup.
00:05:10And here is number 29.
00:05:29And he swings and misses and it's nothing you'd want. Belly threw that fastball right by him.
00:05:34Gives him a little bit of confidence. But in the back of your mind, you got to think,
00:05:37is he trying to set me up for later in this at bat?
00:05:43The wind of the pitch. Strike two.
00:05:53Righty delivers. Stays alive.
00:05:58Here's the 0-2. Foul ball there.
00:06:13One down. Base is empty.
00:06:17That misses the zone. 2-2.
00:06:26Had a good eye there.
00:06:30That misses the zone, 2 and 2.
00:06:38Had a good eye there.
00:06:46Really good take, especially with two strikes.
00:06:49Righty to the plate.
00:06:59The 3-2 is off the outside edge and that is ball four.
00:07:03Great back and forth and that is bad.
00:07:06He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there.
00:07:12I'll tell you right now, I couldn't have done it.
00:07:14And now, Ken Griffey Jr.
00:07:16First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:07:32At the belt, the five.
00:07:36Two will count, great hitter at the dish.
00:07:38If you're going to miss, you're going to miss outside the zone.
00:07:41You miss inside the strike zone, you'll be asking the umpire for a baseball.
00:07:462-0.
00:07:49Down to Paul here, rolls foul.
00:08:01And a 2-1 all the way.
00:08:04And a 2-1 all the way.
00:08:21That clips a corner.
00:08:23Griffey was an instant sensation when he burst out of the Major League scene back in 1989.
00:08:29Oh, they got him leaning, he's out.
00:08:34Unless you're really thinking about stealing second base, you should not get picked off by a right-handed pitcher right there.
00:08:51And in his rookie year, it was already clear that Ken Griffey Jr. was a generational talent.
00:08:57He was a bona fide five-pool player, and every one of those five tools was elite.
00:09:07Kicks and fires.
00:09:11And a swing and a miss.
00:09:12And that's that.
00:09:15Scoreless after one.
00:09:30Back at T-Mobile Park, here's the veteran first baseman, Jeff Bagwell.
00:09:36That term five-tool guy gets thrown around lightly sometimes, but with Jr., it applies 100%.
00:09:43There's nothing this guy can do on the diamond.
00:09:46And there's the strike.
00:09:50A wide pitch.
00:09:55Ricky Holliday, our umpire behind the dish, knows pretty fair umpire for both hitters and pitchers.
00:10:00Yeah, I think that's right.
00:10:02There is a little inconsistency on the corners of the plate.
00:10:05You can't always be sure how it's going to go with those borderline pitches as the game progresses.
00:10:11Up the middle.
00:10:12Base hit.
00:10:13That was smoked through the infield.
00:10:20Number 17 up next for the Astros.
00:10:26And he swings and misses at the initial offering.
00:10:39Pickoff moved to first.
00:10:41Bagwell back in on a dive.
00:10:50You're one.
00:10:53He's really working him away in his sit-bat.
00:10:55Sometimes take a little bit off velocity.
00:10:57Try to get a rollover.
00:10:58Something on the ground.
00:11:00Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield.
00:11:12And the righty deals.
00:11:14Clips the corner.
00:11:15And a count.
00:11:16One and two.
00:11:22On the ground.
00:11:23Could be two.
00:11:24Fires to second for one.
00:11:26And that's two.
00:11:40So next up for Houston, Ken Caminiti.
00:11:43This splits between April and May there.
00:12:00Oh, now this one's high and deep.
00:12:03Way back there.
00:12:04On its way.
00:12:05Gone.
00:12:09He powers one out to right field.
00:12:12His seventh home run of the season.
00:12:14It's one-nothing.
00:12:15That was blasted.
00:12:17Absolutely.
00:12:18No doubt off the bat.
00:12:29Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate,
00:12:32but he was ready to turn on the inside fastball.
00:12:35So direct to the pitch.
00:12:38Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark.
00:12:46Two outs.
00:12:47Nobody on.
00:12:48Here's the former MVP, Jose Altuve.
00:12:55First offering misses badly for ball one.
00:13:08But why the kick to pitch?
00:13:11Good eye right there.
00:13:13When you get ahead in the count,
00:13:14there's no doubt that the success rate goes up.
00:13:16And that's what he's been doing.
00:13:18It's made a big impact for him in recent games.
00:13:23Altuve is in for a strike.
00:13:28And he deals.
00:13:31This one chopped on the ground, but fouled.
00:13:402-2 now.
00:13:44Swing and a miss.
00:13:45Struck him out.
00:13:46And that will end the inning.
00:13:48But they're off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot.
00:13:52And the home team down a run.
00:14:09Back in Seattle, now the third baseman, Edgar Martinez.
00:14:17Scott back to work.
00:14:21Just off the outside part of the plate.
00:14:37And a 1-0.
00:14:41Swings through that one.
00:14:42Now there's a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see.
00:14:46And he guessed wrong right there.
00:14:48Crazy slider with just terrific bite at the end.
00:15:03That one the other way.
00:15:04Pulls it in for the out.
00:15:15And the batter now.
00:15:17This guy has turned into a beast.
00:15:29In there for strike one.
00:15:35The wind of the pitch.
00:15:38And a foul ball.
00:15:47And a pitch.
00:15:52Line drive to short and caught.
00:15:56Batting six.
00:15:58The left fielder.
00:15:59Jay.
00:16:02The next to hit.
00:16:16In there and it's on one.
00:16:18Man, 91 on the slider right there.
00:16:21That's a hard one.
00:16:22Slow and fastball for some guys.
00:16:32Swung on, belted.
00:16:33That one's got a chance.
00:16:35Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:16:38Mariners go down quietly there.
00:16:40They trail here.
00:16:411-0.
00:16:51And here comes Carlos Correa.
00:16:53Struggling on the road this season.
00:16:55Better results at home.
00:17:08The pitch.
00:17:11Swings through that one for strike one.
00:17:27Takes low for ball one.
00:17:29Well, he's so great about hitting the ball the other way.
00:17:31He gets those arms extended.
00:17:33So right there, just trying to straighten him up a little bit
00:17:36so he doesn't have as much outside plate coverage.
00:17:39Gets it to first.
00:17:40That takes care of Correa.
00:17:43Batting nine.
00:17:44The catcher.
00:17:45Number 15.
00:17:49And next to hit for Houston.
00:17:51Number 15.
00:17:53This is a guy who's in the line of first and foremost because of what he
00:17:57contributes defensively, Chris.
00:17:59And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored,
00:18:02this guy is a big contributor.
00:18:05That one's in there.
00:18:060-1.
00:18:20The 0-1.
00:18:23Late with the swing there.
00:18:24Ooh, by a.
00:18:26You got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner.
00:18:32And a pinch.
00:18:35Slow roller to third.
00:18:37And he picks it up in foul territory.
00:18:45Deal two.
00:18:48Swing and a miss.
00:18:49And he struck him out.
00:18:51Now two out.
00:18:52Man, that slider, bearing it in your hands like that,
00:18:55it's just so tough to fight off.
00:18:56It's kind of like a cutter.
00:18:58It just can eat you off, saw you off.
00:19:00Tell you what, hitters have nightmares about that pitch.
00:19:03Perfectly executed out there in the mouth.
00:19:13Now here is Jose Cruz.
00:19:16Good contact guy, good defender.
00:19:20First offering, misses the mark.
00:19:36They see a win.
00:19:46The 1-1.
00:19:49Just missed.
00:19:58The other way.
00:19:59Brings it in for the third out.
00:20:02Astros are down quietly.
00:20:04But they're on top, 1-0.
00:20:18Back here at the ballpark.
00:20:19Now number 13.
00:20:21You talk about elite defensive players,
00:20:23especially in the middle of the diamond.
00:20:25And this guy is at the top of the list.
00:20:28Scott back to work.
00:20:32Just missed.
00:20:34And you played behind guys,
00:20:35and they love having your speed out there defensively.
00:20:38One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having
00:20:42those elite defenders behind them.
00:20:44He's got it up barehanded.
00:20:52The next pitch misses, and it's 2-1.
00:20:55Boogan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump,
00:20:58and defense shouldn't either.
00:21:00Hitting-wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics,
00:21:03but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great
00:21:07defense if you're talented in that way.
00:21:09And this is what this guy does.
00:21:18And that's ball four.
00:21:22Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot.
00:21:25Hit or didn't offer at it.
00:21:26Now he has somebody to worry about over at first.
00:21:29Number five.
00:21:30Number five.
00:21:31Up next for the Mariners.
00:21:50That's pitch downstairs.
00:21:52And that's ball one.
00:22:02Right-hander kicks, deals.
00:22:04That one missing inside.
00:22:21Nice hit.
00:22:22Left-center field.
00:22:24Throw back in quickly.
00:22:26First and second down with nobody out.
00:22:28Well, the last ten games or so have been anything but fun at the plate for him,
00:22:32so that one has to feel good.
00:22:34Anytime you rip a line drive the other way,
00:22:36you feel really good about what you did at the plate.
00:22:39You trusted your hands, you let the ball travel,
00:22:42and you took the barrel straight to it.
00:22:44That's great work right there.
00:22:45Number two.
00:22:46Takes one off the outside here.
00:23:01And here it comes.
00:23:03He was late there.
00:23:05Strike one.
00:23:06Boog, if you're that baserunner at second base,
00:23:08you want to be quiet out there.
00:23:09Not bouncing around.
00:23:11Not distracting your teammate, the hitter.
00:23:14Make sure that he can clearly focus on that pitcher and that release point.
00:23:20And the right-hander deals.
00:23:22That's in there.
00:23:24And they count one and two.
00:23:25Love how vocal the umpire is today.
00:23:28No doubt in the hitter's mind, catcher's mind, and even the pitcher's mind
00:23:33as to the conviction in the call.
00:23:35Got him.
00:23:37And one out now.
00:23:39Just beautiful placement of the splitter right there.
00:23:41Exactly where you want it with two strikes to get that swing and miss.
00:23:45And he's worked very hard to be able to command that pitch.
00:23:48It's a tough pitch to get a grip on,
00:23:50but he's one of the best at throwing it where he wants to.
00:23:54Ichiro Suzuki up next for the Mariners.
00:23:58Second in the American League in hitting.
00:24:02And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:24:20And a strike.
00:24:23Runners at first and second with one gone.
00:24:33The next offering misses, and it's two and one.
00:24:48Left-hand batter waits.
00:24:50Swing and a miss, and now two and two.
00:24:53That's a really big swing right there.
00:24:55He's got to remember, with this speed,
00:24:57a walk or a single can turn into extra bases by stealing a base or two.
00:25:05And there's a foul ball.
00:25:11One out.
00:25:12Runners at first and second.
00:25:20On the ground, two ball.
00:25:22Over to Correa for one.
00:25:23Return throw to first.
00:25:25Got him.
00:25:26And that'll do it.
00:25:27On to inning number four.
00:25:29It's the Astros' one and the Mariners' nothing.
00:25:42As we go to the top of the fourth,
00:25:44now the number two hitter, Craig Biggio.
00:25:50And the right-hander back to work.
00:25:53It's good speed at the top of the order here.
00:25:55You want to get it on.
00:25:56See if you can get a stolen base.
00:25:57Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run.
00:26:01And now it's even up.
00:26:03Cold night tonight, Boogie.
00:26:04That's a pretty firm fastball right there.
00:26:07I tell you what, memories of getting jammed,
00:26:09they're creeping into my mind right now.
00:26:18In the air, out towards left center.
00:26:23Junior right there to make the grab.
00:26:25What a way.
00:26:29The left fielder, number 20, Luis Gonzalez.
00:26:34Luis Gonzalez up next for the Astros.
00:26:38He's got the power, but great contact skills.
00:26:41One of the best contact hitters in the game.
00:26:46First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:26:53And that one upstairs.
00:26:56See how the catcher wanted that pitch up and in,
00:26:58wanted to try to tie him up.
00:26:59That's the one thing we're seeing, that high fastball.
00:27:02You have to get it up there because of how hitters have
00:27:04changed their swings.
00:27:12And that's a good one.
00:27:13That's the one thing we're seeing, that high fastball.
00:27:15You have to get it up there because of how hitters have
00:27:17changed their swings.
00:27:24Left field, and it's caught for the out.
00:27:34The first baseman, number five, Jeff Bagwell.
00:27:39And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Jeff Bagwell.
00:27:43This guy makes great contact.
00:27:45One of the best in the game at putting bat on ball.
00:27:48He's got such quick hands, and he's gaining pitch recognition.
00:27:51That keeps him square to the plate.
00:27:53There's a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time,
00:27:56and that produces solid contact consistently.
00:28:05Next offering is in for a strike.
00:28:07Good pitch to hit on a tee up in the zone.
00:28:10I think he was looking for something else right there.
00:28:13So now one and two.
00:28:15Clearly he was sitting on a fastball right there.
00:28:17It just ended up out in front of the slider.
00:28:19Hey, you can't fault him for his commit.
00:28:21Swing and a miss.
00:28:22Struck him out, and that is that.
00:28:25Nothing doing there for Houston.
00:28:27They lead it one-nothing.
00:28:41Bottom of the fourth, and stepping in for the Mariners, number 29.
00:28:53The pitch.
00:28:57That's in for a strike.
00:29:03The pitch.
00:29:06That one hooked foul.
00:29:11That's in for a strike.
00:29:19Kicks and deals.
00:29:23That one out to right.
00:29:25Number 17 under it.
00:29:27Puts the squeeze on that one, and there's one down.
00:29:34The batman.
00:29:36The center fielder.
00:29:38Down for Seattle, Ken Griffey Jr.
00:29:40This guy with big-time power and an elite defender.
00:29:50With Jr. probably one of the sweetest swings we have ever seen,
00:29:55and certainly as signature a swing as any player has ever had.
00:30:05Next offering is downstairs.
00:30:09The pitch.
00:30:13And that one missing low.
00:30:15The whole setup for Jr., the way he waggled the bat,
00:30:18the way he was able to just effortlessly move that swing through the zone,
00:30:22just a pretty thing from start to finish.
00:30:25Let's see if he gives him anything to hit here.
00:30:28Sanker catches the zone at the knees.
00:30:31And even though he was on the big stage playing in front of thousands of people,
00:30:36you always remember the hat backwards, big smile on his face.
00:30:39He kept this game that can have a lot of stress in it fun, just like he was a kid.
00:30:45And the pitch.
00:30:49Now a screamer into the outfield.
00:30:52Cruz racing over to make the catch.
00:30:54Man, that's one of those at-bats where you have to remind yourself it's about the process.
00:30:59He did everything right right there, nothing to show for it.
00:31:02But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at-bat.
00:31:07So now it's the Mariner cleanup hitter, Edgar Martinez.
00:31:11He's 0 for 1.
00:31:16In there for strike one.
00:31:21Two down, nobody on.
00:31:33And a count one and two.
00:31:47And the one-two misses to even the count.
00:31:53The two-two.
00:31:57That's hard hit of the line.
00:32:02He climbs the ladder and makes the catch.
00:32:05They typically put the best athletes up the middle,
00:32:08and this center fielder makes an excellent leaping catch to end the inning.
00:32:19And welcome back. We go to the top of the fifth.
00:32:22Digging in is the switch inning outfielder, number 17.
00:32:26Number 17.
00:32:33The wind of the pitch.
00:32:37And there's a ball.
00:32:43Righty to the plate.
00:32:46Misses off the inside.
00:32:48Two balls, no strikes.
00:32:52The pitch.
00:32:55Inside corner for a strike.
00:32:57Now two balls and a strike.
00:32:59And the pitch.
00:33:03Tied him up inside with that one.
00:33:05Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands.
00:33:07If I'm out there on the ball, I'm going right back in there.
00:33:12Next offering misses.
00:33:14Counts full three and two.
00:33:17Rolled slowly to first.
00:33:19And he picks it up, and he'll put it in his pocket.
00:33:27Here comes the pitch.
00:33:31That one ripped left field.
00:33:33Way back in the middle.
00:33:35And he's got it.
00:33:37He's got it.
00:33:39He's got it.
00:33:41He's got it.
00:33:43That one ripped left field.
00:33:45Way back there.
00:33:47Leaps at the wall, but can't haul it in.
00:33:51And that's a leadoff double.
00:33:55Well, a swing like that can help you come out of this struggle.
00:33:58We saw the numbers coming into the ball game.
00:34:01But all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win.
00:34:05And now it's switch hitting third baseman Ken Kamenitty.
00:34:12Swings through that one.
00:34:140-1.
00:34:28Righty to left field.
00:34:31Righty delivers.
00:34:33And that's outside.
00:34:36No outs.
00:34:38Runner on second.
00:34:45That one pushed to the left and foul.
00:34:57And the righty deals.
00:35:01And a foul ball. He stays alive.
00:35:11Runner leads away at second.
00:35:13Stays alive.
00:35:25Kicks and fires.
00:35:27That one missed.
00:35:30Still just the second batter of the inning.
00:35:32And on the mound.
00:35:34He's already thrown 13 pitches.
00:35:36They got him working hard out there.
00:35:44That one ran inside.
00:35:46Almost got him.
00:35:563-2 now.
00:35:58And he walked him.
00:36:01Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there.
00:36:04But with first base open, walk not a bad thing.
00:36:06He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball.
00:36:11Jose Altuve up to hit here.
00:36:13He's got a history of coming through in the big spots.
00:36:16I know I like to talk about I'm not sure where the clutch actually exists.
00:36:20But you look at the numbers.
00:36:22And this guy always seems to deliver in those spots.
00:36:29First pitch.
00:36:31And he just misses.
00:36:33Well, I think it's the ability to assess the situation.
00:36:36Understanding what the pitcher has.
00:36:38What he's trying to get people out on.
00:36:40And then being able to use the entire field.
00:36:42Next pitch is downstairs.
00:36:49Look out.
00:36:51Almost got him upstairs.
00:36:53If you're a guy that can only hit to one field.
00:36:55Then you're really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations.
00:36:58Because pitchers are going to adjust.
00:37:00But because he's able to use the entire field.
00:37:02That's why he's so successful in these situations.
00:37:05Next pitch in for a strike.
00:37:073-1.
00:37:15He swings and fouls one off.
00:37:21First and second here.
00:37:23No outs.
00:37:29Rips that one to right.
00:37:31Makes the catch.
00:37:33Runner tags it second.
00:37:35To third.
00:37:37Not in time.
00:37:39And it's runners at the corners with one gone.
00:37:41Man, he smoked that fastball.
00:37:43He's all over it.
00:37:45It's just frustrating when you can't get it to fall.
00:37:47Maybe next time off he'll find a hole.
00:37:54Correa in the box now.
00:37:56As he looks at ball one.
00:37:58Second played appearance of the day for him.
00:38:05The pitch.
00:38:09Runners are at the corners.
00:38:11One away.
00:38:13Just a submit mixer slider right there.
00:38:15It's a great pitch to hit.
00:38:17If you can recognize it early and jump on it.
00:38:19This one in the year center field.
00:38:21Makes the grab.
00:38:23Runner tags from third.
00:38:25The tag gets him.
00:38:27And it's a double play to end the inning.
00:38:29So the Astros lead one.
00:38:31But they hold a 1-0 lead.
00:38:33I don't judge, but you're fake.
00:38:35Case closed, and I ain't got a law degree.
00:38:37Can't understand why they all on me.
00:38:39I'm crazy, don't get involved with me.
00:38:41I drop the top and feel this autumn breeze.
00:38:43You need gas, so we can be all on E.
00:38:45Oh, I get it, spend it all on me.
00:38:47You don't see yourself good, I hit the target.
00:38:49Welcome back.
00:38:51John Chaubey with my buddy Chris Singleton.
00:38:53It's set to get us started.
00:38:55Bottom five.
00:38:57Mike Cameron.
00:38:59Let's go.
00:39:11The wind of the pitch.
00:39:13There's a strike.
00:39:23Comes up empty.
00:39:25That's strike two.
00:39:27That nasty splitter.
00:39:29Bottom falls out of it.
00:39:31You don't see a lot of guys throw that these days,
00:39:33but I tell you what, he's got a good one.
00:39:37And a swing and a miss.
00:39:39And the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth.
00:39:41Tell you what, those are the types of guys
00:39:43pitchers really like to punch out
00:39:45when they're on the mound.
00:39:47Because if they get on, just the distraction
00:39:49that they create with all that speed
00:39:51over on the base pass, it can take away
00:39:53your focus from the next hitter.
00:39:55So what you want to do is serve up a pitch
00:39:57that a guy hits over the fence,
00:39:59and it's a multi-run home run.
00:40:01And now Jay Buhner.
00:40:03And that's in there for strike one.
00:40:19Swings and misses
00:40:21at one down below the zone.
00:40:23From a pitcher's perspective,
00:40:25that's a beautiful splitter right there.
00:40:27As a hitter, you don't like it,
00:40:29but he's commanded his fastball
00:40:31and out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes
00:40:33and the bottom just falls out of it.
00:40:35And the pitch.
00:40:39That one blasted deep to right.
00:40:41Way back.
00:40:43And that one is gone
00:40:45over the right field wall.
00:40:47A solo shot.
00:40:49Home run number five on the season.
00:40:51It's tied at one.
00:41:07I'm sure he wanted that pitch down below
00:41:09the zone. It stayed up a little bit.
00:41:11He paid a dear price for it.
00:41:13Just a great swing to the ball,
00:41:15through the ball, and a nice round triple.
00:41:21So it's all tied up,
00:41:23thanks to the home run.
00:41:25And up next for Seattle, number 13.
00:41:29And he swings and misses and it's nothing at one.
00:41:47Swing and a line drive, base hit
00:41:49out of the center field.
00:41:51Just kind of sliced that one into center.
00:41:53Back to back base hits.
00:41:55Let that pitch get pretty deep on him.
00:41:57So I think he was looking to go the other way.
00:41:59It was off speed and inside though.
00:42:01So a good adjustment to
00:42:03shoot it back up the middle.
00:42:05And now they've got some speed on first.
00:42:07So we'll see if they try to get him into motion.
00:42:09And stepping in for the Mariners, number five.
00:42:13Good speed on the base pass.
00:42:15He handles the bat very well.
00:42:17I wouldn't be surprised if the skipper
00:42:19puts on some type of hit and run
00:42:21or run and hit.
00:42:29The 1-0.
00:42:31Breaking ball in there for a strike.
00:42:41And he deals.
00:42:43That one inside, 2-1.
00:42:47That's out to center field.
00:42:59Cruz makes the catch.
00:43:01And there's two down.
00:43:07Now that's number two.
00:43:11And now the catcher comes up to him.
00:43:13Number two.
00:43:15This guy who is very highly regarded
00:43:17defensively. Fun to watch him
00:43:19control stuff behind the plate.
00:43:21Good game caller. Good at framing.
00:43:23But it's that big arm that really stands out.
00:43:27You come into the game knowing that
00:43:29unless the ball is in the dirt or gets by him,
00:43:31we're probably not going to steal anything today.
00:43:33So that's where you want to get a little more aggressive
00:43:35on your secondary lead and hope that
00:43:37some base hits, some slogs,
00:43:39some home runs can come into play.
00:43:45And a 1-0.
00:44:05And that's outside.
00:44:07I'll say this as a former position player
00:44:09and base stealer.
00:44:11When you come into a game and you've got a guy like this
00:44:13behind the dish with a big arm,
00:44:15you really have to change your approach.
00:44:17Can't try to steal because you'll get thrown out.
00:44:19Maybe get a little bigger lead,
00:44:21be aggressive on the secondary.
00:44:23But this type of guy shuts the running game down.
00:44:25And a 3-0 finds the zone.
00:44:33At the belt and fires.
00:44:35Blinded to right.
00:44:37And makes the play.
00:44:39And that's out number three.
00:44:41The Mariners pick up a run
00:44:43thanks to this solo homer.
00:44:45All even at one apiece.
00:44:53Back in Seattle,
00:44:55top of the sixth inning.
00:44:57Here's the catcher, number 15.
00:44:59The catcher, number 15.
00:45:03And a pitch.
00:45:07Good eye right there.
00:45:09The 1-0.
00:45:15This game has been so tight.
00:45:17Feels like the next team to score will win it.
00:45:33Line drive.
00:45:35Makes the catch for the out.
00:45:37Now batting,
00:45:39the center fielder,
00:45:41Jose.
00:45:43So the Houston lineup turns over.
00:45:45And stepping in for the Astros,
00:45:47Jose,
00:45:49a guy who makes an impact not just at the plate
00:45:51but also in the field.
00:45:55And the first offering is not close.
00:46:01And here it comes.
00:46:03And here it comes.
00:46:07Pitch misses.
00:46:09And that's ball two.
00:46:11Last couple of pitches breaking balls away.
00:46:13I think he's going to have to come firm inside
00:46:15to be able to open up that location
00:46:17if he wants to go back there later in this count.
00:46:21And now 2-1.
00:46:232-1.
00:46:31Yeah, that skips in the dirt.
00:46:33Well, these guys have had a hard time scoring
00:46:35in this one. The guy out there on the mound
00:46:37wants to keep attacking, make sure
00:46:39that they don't get any confidence.
00:46:433-1, and he couldn't come up with it.
00:46:47That's a really dangerous base runner to put on first,
00:46:49especially in a tie game.
00:46:51Now there might be some consequences
00:46:53coming from that mistake.
00:46:55Craig Biggio up next for the Astros.
00:46:57And in the back of his mind,
00:46:59he's got to be thinking about
00:47:01home run number 300.
00:47:03He's sitting on 299 right now.
00:47:05First pitch, not close.
00:47:07This is one of those situations
00:47:09the infielders have to pre-plan
00:47:11and understand that the ball's
00:47:13going to be hit extremely hard right at them
00:47:15if they're going to have a chance to go for a double play.
00:47:21Next offering is down low.
00:47:23Chris with that distraction
00:47:25and the speedy guy at first,
00:47:27he's in a favorable hitter's count.
00:47:29Swing and blast one
00:47:31down the line.
00:47:33It's gone if it's fair,
00:47:35but it hooks foul.
00:47:37Well, he's ready for that fastball right there.
00:47:39Really turned on it, hit it hard,
00:47:41had the distance,
00:47:43but just too much hook to it.
00:47:45So might want to make a little bit of an adjustment,
00:47:47let it travel a little more,
00:47:49and see if you can keep that thing fair.
00:47:59And the pitch.
00:48:01Got him.
00:48:03That's the second out.
00:48:05Just excellent location on that inside fastball.
00:48:07Really locked him up.
00:48:09As a hitter, it's not typically what you're looking for.
00:48:11You're trying to protect away
00:48:13and then in, so you can be a little bit
00:48:15tardy with two strikes.
00:48:17Hard to tell if he was fooled
00:48:19or if he thought it would be called a ball,
00:48:21but either way, that's a really nice pitch.
00:48:23Gonzalez in the box with two gone
00:48:25and takes a look at a called strike.
00:48:35The 0-1
00:48:37and ball one.
00:48:39That's where you want it. It's a good miss.
00:48:47The 1-1.
00:48:49Good eye in that spot.
00:48:59Two outs
00:49:01and it goes
00:49:03just foul.
00:49:05The 1-2.
00:49:15The pitch.
00:49:17And a foul ball.
00:49:19He stays alive.
00:49:29That misses
00:49:31and it's 3-2.
00:49:33Just got to stay focused on the pitch.
00:49:35The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap
00:49:37should definitely score it.
00:49:41Hernandez
00:49:43picks the first. Cruz
00:49:45gets back easily.
00:49:55Left hand hitter waits.
00:49:57Leiter snagged it
00:49:59first. Top of the order
00:50:01two up in the home half of the sixth.
00:50:03All tied, 1-1.
00:50:13We go bottom six. Digging in,
00:50:15it's the speedy outfielder Ichiro
00:50:17Suzuki.
00:50:19You've got to appreciate a guy who's this good
00:50:21defensively. I mean, watching him
00:50:23track balls on the outfield, it is beautiful.
00:50:25That pitch
00:50:27in for a strike.
00:50:291-1.
00:50:31And I would say that most
00:50:33great defensive outfielders,
00:50:35it's kind of natural. There is some
00:50:37work that you can do to it
00:50:39to improve your game, but ultimately
00:50:41you either have it or you don't.
00:50:47Next offering
00:50:49is in for a strike.
00:50:55Ball one there.
00:50:57There's one guy that I can think about, Boog,
00:50:59who started as a third baseman,
00:51:01Alex Gordon, and then became
00:51:03an elite perennial
00:51:05gold-glover out in left field
00:51:07for the Kansas City Royals. But he's
00:51:09a guy, when you watch him play,
00:51:11you would imagine that that's all he ever
00:51:13played in his life, was the outfield.
00:51:15On the ground.
00:51:19Sends it across to first,
00:51:21and that's one out as they get the leadoff.
00:51:23And that's one out as they get the leadoff,
00:51:25hitter in the sixth.
00:51:33And now for Seattle,
00:51:35number 29.
00:51:37Yeah, some guys
00:51:39just have instincts, right?
00:51:41I mean, that's the way it goes. We talk about
00:51:43Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his
00:51:45instinct on the bases, despite the
00:51:47fact that he didn't play a ton of baseball
00:51:49as a kid.
00:51:51The pitch.
00:51:55Strike two.
00:51:57Remember Mark Katze, he was a real good
00:51:59defensive outfielder. Good instincts,
00:52:01not great speed.
00:52:05Next offering is
00:52:07in the dirt.
00:52:11The wide kick to pitch.
00:52:21Line to second,
00:52:23snagged on the bounce.
00:52:25Over to first,
00:52:27two up, two down.
00:52:37And up next for Seattle,
00:52:39Ken Griffey Jr.
00:52:51You heard X touchdown
00:52:53at the airport. He had 50 cars,
00:52:55100 trucks.
00:53:01First pitch, just misses.
00:53:03Well, a mistake right here could
00:53:05untie this ball game. If you're the pitcher
00:53:07out there, you just want to be a little more cautious.
00:53:13And that one
00:53:15is lifted in the air.
00:53:17Cruz
00:53:19makes the catch, and that'll
00:53:21do it. Mariners down in order.
00:53:23Score remains deadlocked
00:53:25at one.
00:53:33Back here at the ballpark, we go to
00:53:35the top of the seventh, and here's the first
00:53:37baseman, Jeff Bagwell.
00:53:39He's a big strong guy, can
00:53:41untie this game with one
00:53:43swing.
00:53:45Hernandez, back to work.
00:53:47That
00:53:49misses off the outside edge.
00:53:51Well, he's back out there to begin the seventh.
00:53:53That surprise you at all, Chris?
00:53:55Yeah, a little bit. It was a little rough
00:53:57sixth inning there, but his skippers got
00:53:59a lot of confidence in him. But, trust
00:54:01me, they will keep a close eye
00:54:03on how he does in this one.
00:54:09Next offering
00:54:11into dirt, and now 3-0.
00:54:17The
00:54:19pitch
00:54:23clips the outside
00:54:25corner, and the count is 3-1.
00:54:31And there's
00:54:33ball four.
00:54:35His ability to draw
00:54:37walks has been something that's
00:54:39been part of his career since day one.
00:54:41No outs, runner
00:54:43at first. Now it's the right
00:54:45fielder, number 17.
00:54:55First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:54:57Action in the bullpen for Seattle,
00:54:59Mike Moore, preparing to come
00:55:01on if needed. Number 30,
00:55:03getting cranked up as well.
00:55:09And a 1-0.
00:55:11The
00:55:13go-ahead run
00:55:15aboard at first. Nobody out.
00:55:19Next offering is in for a
00:55:21strike. If you're a base runner, you've got to
00:55:23stay dialed in here. Look for anything
00:55:25in the dirt. Try your best to get
00:55:27in the scoring position.
00:55:31Righty to the play.
00:55:33Swing and a miss! Struck
00:55:35him out, and that's the first
00:55:37out. He came out of his mechanics
00:55:39here. Typically likes to shoot the ball
00:55:41the other way, but that time
00:55:43a little anxious.
00:55:51Here's the third baseman,
00:55:53Ken Kameniti. He's already
00:55:55homered in this game.
00:55:57First offering
00:55:59misses the block.
00:56:01One away,
00:56:03tie game.
00:56:05Go-ahead run stands at first.
00:56:07Runner on the move.
00:56:09Pitch in for a strike.
00:56:11Throw there.
00:56:13Safe!
00:56:31The pitch.
00:56:39And there's a
00:56:41base hit at the left.
00:56:43Oh, he throws
00:56:45it away! Throw comes in
00:56:47quickly, holds that go-ahead run
00:56:49at third, and there's still one
00:56:51away. I really like that
00:56:53swing, man. He didn't just push it the other
00:56:55way through the infield. He drove
00:56:57it that way, and it kind of makes me think he was
00:56:59in opposite field as he stepped into the
00:57:01box. Got a pitch he liked, and he got it
00:57:03done. Now a huge at-bat in this
00:57:05game coming up.
00:57:17Runner's on the move. A squeeze,
00:57:19and he gets it down.
00:57:21Tosses to the pitcher,
00:57:23covering the bag. That's an out,
00:57:25but the go-ahead run comes across.
00:57:27This is exactly how
00:57:29they draw it up. He gets the bunt down
00:57:31and makes it pretty easy for the runner from
00:57:33third to score on the play. I'll tell you what,
00:57:35they'll trade that out for the run every
00:57:37time. Nicely done.
00:57:39Here's Carlos Correa.
00:57:43He gets the intentional walk here,
00:57:45and now will force it any base with two gone.
00:57:47Well, it doesn't get much easier with this
00:57:49next batter, but I totally understand
00:57:51going with the intentional walk in that
00:57:53spot. He's just too dangerous at the plate
00:57:55right now, and there's a base open, so it gives you
00:57:57options defensively to get it out.
00:57:59Here comes the manager out of the dugout,
00:58:01and he'll make a move for the bullpen.
00:58:03Felix Hernandez is
00:58:05done, and the line not closed on him yet
00:58:07as he's responsible for the runners on
00:58:09base. Back with a new pitcher after this.
00:58:11So out of the bullpen for the
00:58:13Mariners, Mike Moore.
00:58:15And this guy can bring it velocity-wise.
00:58:19Not the easiest thing
00:58:21when you're talking about a guy that's, you know,
00:58:23perhaps is going to be in the rotation,
00:58:25but maybe a long relief guy to
00:58:27not start an inning, to come and do
00:58:29an inning with pressure on it and try
00:58:31to get yourself comfortable.
00:58:47Swings and pulls a foul
00:58:49to the right side.
00:58:53Next pitch is inside,
00:58:55and a count-even one-and-one.
00:58:57Looking for some insurance,
00:58:59or as our friends down in the South
00:59:01would say, insurance.
00:59:03No matter how you say it, we know what you mean.
00:59:05Boog, he never moved
00:59:07because he never had time to,
00:59:09but that kind of velocity,
00:59:11you'd prefer that pitcher work away.
00:59:13Here comes the
00:59:15ball, and it's in.
00:59:17It's in.
00:59:19It's in.
00:59:21Boog, he never moved
00:59:23because he never had time to,
00:59:25but that kind of velocity,
00:59:27you'd prefer that pitcher work away.
00:59:29And the right-hander deals.
00:59:31Chopped out in front of the plate,
00:59:33and he grabs it in foul ground.
00:59:55Kicks and deals.
00:59:57Kicks and deals.
00:59:59Swing and a miss,
01:00:01and that is that.
01:00:05Midway into inning number 7,
01:00:07and it's time to stretch.
01:00:09It's the Astros 2 and the Mariners 1.
01:00:19Back at T-Mobile Park, set for the last half
01:00:21of the 7th, now here is Edgar Martinez.
01:00:23Edgar Martinez.
01:00:25A lot of times you're looking for a guy
01:00:27to get that tight run on base,
01:00:29but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game
01:00:31with one swing here.
01:00:35And the first pitch misses for ball 1.
01:00:37The Astros have some action
01:00:39in their pen. Number 54
01:00:41appears to be getting loose.
01:00:43Smith getting loose as well.
01:00:45Swing and a miss.
01:00:53Next offering is downstairs.
01:00:59The wind of the pitch.
01:01:03Swing and a bouncer.
01:01:07On to first, and the leadoff hitter
01:01:09set down to open the 7th.
01:01:11The batter, number 44.
01:01:13This designated hitter
01:01:15is right.
01:01:17Next is the designated hitter, Mike Cameron.
01:01:31Line drive, caught!
01:01:35Now batter,
01:01:37the left fielder,
01:01:39Jay Buehler.
01:01:43Next to him, Jay Buehler.
01:01:45He's already homered here in this one.
01:01:59In there, and it's 0-1.
01:02:01Well, as good as things can be,
01:02:03it can be a tough day at the office, even for the
01:02:05skippers, seeing the offense
01:02:07just sputter, not able to get anything going.
01:02:13And he's down 0-2 as he swings through it.
01:02:15The guy's going this good.
01:02:17He's retired seven in a row.
01:02:19You gotta step out of the box, fake bunt, do something
01:02:21to break it up.
01:02:25Next offering, down in the dirt.
01:02:27Dirt!
01:02:41Chases that one out of the zone,
01:02:43and that's the inning.
01:02:45And 1-2-3, go the Mariners.
01:02:47And they trail it here, 2-1.
01:02:49Don't know why that, you changed me.
01:02:51Don't know why that, you changed me.
01:02:55And welcome back.
01:02:57All set for the start of the inning.
01:02:59And stepping in is the speedy
01:03:01Jose Cruz.
01:03:05And the pitch.
01:03:09Just missed.
01:03:11Some activity in the Mariners' bullpen.
01:03:13Edwin Diaz,
01:03:15a right-hander with big strikeout stuff,
01:03:17is getting it fired up.
01:03:27Swing and a high fly ball to left.
01:03:29Buhner pulls it down,
01:03:31and there's one away.
01:03:41So digging in, Craig Biggio.
01:03:43He's on the verge of a milestone.
01:03:45His next home run will be
01:03:47the 300th of his career.
01:03:53That one's in there.
01:03:550-1.
01:03:57They say it's the best pitch in baseball.
01:03:59Strike one, you get ahead,
01:04:01only good hitter as well.
01:04:03Gives you a little bit more confidence
01:04:05to move through the at-bat.
01:04:09That one the other way.
01:04:11Base hit.
01:04:13Now with one away.
01:04:19Nice job of driving that pitch
01:04:21the other way on a line.
01:04:23You know, hitters, they take so many reps
01:04:25in the cages working on going to the opposite field,
01:04:27and it doesn't always translate into the game,
01:04:29but right there it did,
01:04:31and he did it perfectly.
01:04:33So next up for Houston, Luis Gonzalez.
01:04:35Move over to first,
01:04:37trying to keep him close.
01:04:43First pitch.
01:04:51First pitch doesn't find the zone.
01:05:09That one off the outside edge.
01:05:11Last two pitches have been down in the zone.
01:05:13Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball
01:05:15double play, but in this count,
01:05:17he's going to have to give in, elevate his pitches,
01:05:19and get back into this at-bat.
01:05:23That one missed, now 3-0.
01:05:25It's getting squeezed a little bit here late.
01:05:31One run game,
01:05:33one out, one on.
01:05:35There's the strike, 3-1.
01:05:55Here's the pitch,
01:05:57run around the goal,
01:05:59and that's ball four.
01:06:01Pretty easy walk right there,
01:06:03pretty easy walk right there.
01:06:05Last pitch wasn't even much to think about.
01:06:11So here's the Astros cleanup hitter,
01:06:13Jeff Bagwell.
01:06:15Hitter's got some good opposite field power.
01:06:17What I like about
01:06:19something being hit to the right side,
01:06:21into the outfield, is that the base runner
01:06:23at second has a very good read,
01:06:25and can determine whether or not
01:06:27he can score on that base hit.
01:06:33Now batting,
01:06:35number 17.
01:06:41So first and second
01:06:43with two outs,
01:06:45and next to hit for Houston, number 17.
01:06:55Next offering is
01:06:57down low,
01:06:59and that is ball one.
01:07:03Two outs,
01:07:09couple of base runners at first and second.
01:07:17Next offering is
01:07:19in for a strike.
01:07:25Right hander
01:07:27kicks, deals.
01:07:33Swing and a miss.
01:07:43Swing and a miss
01:07:45as he was late that time.
01:07:47Well, that's today's style of baseball right there,
01:07:49right? Big time V-Law on the bump,
01:07:51and big time pop at the plate.
01:07:53And now two and two.
01:07:55And another ball.
01:07:57This is a really good feeling for a hitter.
01:07:59At this point in the ball game, you know
01:08:01that they don't want to walk you,
01:08:03so you're going to get a pitch to hit.
01:08:05You just better not miss it.
01:08:09The kick, the 3-2.
01:08:11Got him! That's the third out.
01:08:13Two left for the Astros
01:08:15as they're unable to add
01:08:17to their 2-1 lead.
01:08:25Number 54 gets the call
01:08:27from the pen. He has a great
01:08:29slider with tons of movement.
01:08:41Welcome back. Bottom of the 8th.
01:08:43And stepping in for the Mariners, number 13.
01:08:49The pitch.
01:08:51You know this guy's great speed is in the back
01:08:53of that pitcher's mind. If he can get on,
01:08:55it's going to give him one more thing he's got to think about.
01:08:57Movement in the bullpen.
01:08:59Billy Wagner, the closer of the staff,
01:09:01is getting loose to finish this one off.
01:09:09The tying run at the plate.
01:09:11And there's a ball.
01:09:27Here comes a pitch.
01:09:29Fouled off left side.
01:09:45And the righty deals.
01:09:47And it's even up.
01:09:57Going to get the tying run on base.
01:09:59And a swing and a miss.
01:10:01One out.
01:10:03Pretty big strikeout right there
01:10:05to start this 8th inning. Down one.
01:10:07Any leadoff base runner really makes this
01:10:09inning a bit more interesting.
01:10:11But now this offense has to switch from possibly
01:10:13trying to manufacture a run to
01:10:15needing to run into something or just trying to
01:10:17string multiple hits together to get a run
01:10:19across the plate.
01:10:23Number five.
01:10:25Sinks through it for strike one.
01:10:27Wow. Good luck catching up to that one.
01:10:39Next offering is fouled back.
01:10:51Right-handed reliever.
01:10:53Going to count one and two.
01:10:550-2 fastball way out of the zone.
01:10:57I think he's trying to speed him up.
01:10:59Got to stay back. Off speed's probably coming.
01:11:07And now it's one and two.
01:11:09And that one got a piece of him.
01:11:11He had two strikes on him.
01:11:13And he hit him.
01:11:15Well that can certainly jumpstart an offense.
01:11:17The hit by pitch right there.
01:11:19And now they have the opportunity to make it really hurt on the scoreboard.
01:11:21One down.
01:11:23Runner at first.
01:11:25And here's the catcher. Number two.
01:11:33He's home fans.
01:11:35They are making a lot of noise putting pressure
01:11:37on that pitcher out there.
01:11:41Triple digits on the gun.
01:11:43I know there are more guys that can reach that now
01:11:45than in the past but it's still impressive to watch.
01:11:47Over to first and he's saved.
01:11:51He's saved.
01:11:57Next offering is in for a strike.
01:11:59Good approach right there.
01:12:01You want to get something just a little higher
01:12:03that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play.
01:12:11And a pitch.
01:12:13And a swing and a miss.
01:12:15Too long.
01:12:17Such a challenge when a guy's got great
01:12:19velocity throwing a slider
01:12:21over 90 miles per hour.
01:12:23You want to be ready to hit that fastball
01:12:25but that late break just eats you up every time.
01:12:31Ichiro Suzuki digs in now.
01:12:33This guy one of the best contact
01:12:35men in the sport as well.
01:12:37Outstanding on the defensive end.
01:12:39First offering
01:12:41and it just misses.
01:12:49And that one missing low.
01:12:51Typically the outfield defense
01:12:53will play a little bit deeper
01:12:55just to keep the ball in front.
01:12:57Make sure that runner on first
01:12:59doesn't come all the way around the score
01:13:01and tie this ball game up.
01:13:03Next pitch misses
01:13:05and it's 3-0.
01:13:19Righty delivers.
01:13:41Had a strike right through there.
01:13:43That one at triple digits.
01:13:49Fouled off again.
01:13:51And it remains 3-2.
01:14:05And a pitch.
01:14:07That one drilled left field.
01:14:09Nice grab.
01:14:11That one was good.
01:14:14That one drilled left field.
01:14:16Nice grab.
01:14:18That one was ticketed for the gap
01:14:20but couldn't get through security.
01:14:22Great job there of Leapy
01:14:24making the catch and ending the inning.
01:14:32Back now
01:14:34and on the mound the closer, number 22.
01:14:36And he'll do his best to keep this close.
01:14:40Tino Martinez
01:14:42getting loose there.
01:14:44He's now in the game at first.
01:14:48New inning getting started.
01:14:50Now at the plate, Ken Pemaniti.
01:14:58And he deals.
01:15:00That one's in there.
01:15:02It's 0-1.
01:15:05Kicks and fires.
01:15:07There's a strike.
01:15:18And a pitch.
01:15:21And a pitch.
01:15:37And that's downstairs and outside.
01:15:45The pitch.
01:15:47That's down and in.
01:15:51And a pitch.
01:16:03Left-hand batter waits.
01:16:05Good plate appearance there.
01:16:07Able to take the walk.
01:16:09That's a tough one to swallow right there
01:16:11if you're on the mound.
01:16:13You're ahead in the count 0-2
01:16:15and you just couldn't find a way to put him away.
01:16:17It's going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him.
01:16:21He's going.
01:16:23The kick and the pitch.
01:16:25Runner goes.
01:16:27This one popped up.
01:16:29Foul ground, first base side.
01:16:31And that's a foul ball.
01:16:39It's 0-1.
01:16:41Good eye right there.
01:16:43One ball, one strike.
01:16:46One ball, one strike.
01:16:52And here it comes.
01:16:54So a foul ball makes it 1-2.
01:17:01Crowd locked in right now.
01:17:03One run game here in the ninth.
01:17:16One and two now.
01:17:18Altuve waits.
01:17:20And now 2-2.
01:17:22This is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers
01:17:24because he fouls off so many pitches
01:17:26and grinds out the at-bat.
01:17:28I'm sure there are some times where a pitcher
01:17:30would rather just give up a first pitch single
01:17:32than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter.
01:17:36Swing and a miss.
01:17:38Struck him out.
01:17:40One gone here.
01:17:42First strikeout for him in this one.
01:17:45And that splitter is maybe the go-to pitch
01:17:47when he's looking for a swing and miss like that.
01:17:49He throws it quite a bit and
01:17:51that's a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter.
01:17:55Now Correa up to hit
01:17:57for the fourth time tonight.
01:18:04First pitch and that's in for a strike.
01:18:06First pitch and that's in for a strike.
01:18:14One run game here in the top of the ninth.
01:18:22Next pitch misses inside.
01:18:24One ball, one strike.
01:18:32Kicked Sandeos.
01:18:34That's a count one and two.
01:18:49And a ball evens the count.
01:19:01The pitch.
01:19:04On the ground at first.
01:19:06Could be two.
01:19:08To second there's one.
01:19:10Back to first, double play.
01:19:12And that's it for the inning.
01:19:142-3-4 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth.
01:19:16It's the Astros 2 and the Mariners 1.
01:19:26Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm
01:19:28to start the bottom of the ninth.
01:19:30Billy Wagner trying to protect this lead.
01:19:34Back here at the ballpark.
01:19:36We head to the bottom of the ninth.
01:19:38And now for Seattle, number 29.
01:19:50The pitch.
01:19:52And that's outside.
01:20:05Next pitch is outside.
01:20:07Oh an interesting situation.
01:20:09One swing you can tie up the ball game.
01:20:11But if you're patient and work a walk
01:20:13then you bring the game winning run to the plate.
01:20:15And a pitch.
01:20:20I almost feel like he's frustrated a little bit.
01:20:22He wants to be challenged.
01:20:35At the belt and fires.
01:20:37That clips the corner.
01:20:48And now the lefty.
01:20:50Foul back our way.
01:20:52And that's out of play.
01:21:05And the tying run is on base.
01:21:08They're not ready to go home quite yet.
01:21:13Substitution being made at first.
01:21:15On the pinch run, Alex Rodriguez.
01:21:20No outs, runner at first.
01:21:22Digging in, Ken Griffey Jr.
01:21:25This is what stat nerds like myself
01:21:27might call a high leverage situation.
01:21:30Yeah but I'm not sure what the numbers say
01:21:32but clearly an advantage could change
01:21:34the course of this game dramatically.
01:21:37With a single base runner because of all the power
01:21:39they are dangerous
01:21:41to tie this thing up or take the lead.
01:21:44In there for strike one.
01:21:46Just amazing to me how many closers
01:21:48and back end relievers just throw
01:21:50absolute gas these days.
01:21:52I never would have had a chance.
01:21:58So now with one swing
01:22:00this guy could end it.
01:22:21And a breaking ball drops in for a strike.
01:22:23Well it looks like he's wanting to work
01:22:25the upper part of the strike zone.
01:22:27What does that mean?
01:22:28The pan better be working for the hitters.
01:22:30Adjust that side a little bit.
01:22:31Give yourself a chance to hit.
01:22:36Wagner checks on first.
01:22:38Back standing.
01:22:39He's in there safely.
01:22:51And now the count is even.
01:22:59Trying to keep the game alive here
01:23:01in the bottom of the ninth.
01:23:08Next pitch is downstairs.
01:23:28Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty.
01:23:40One run game. Bottom nine.
01:23:42Stays alive.
01:23:453-2 on the way.
01:23:47Outside corner. Got him looking.
01:23:49He can't believe it.
01:23:51Really good battle right there.
01:23:53That final pitch probably could have gone either way.
01:23:55He was hoping he'd get ball four.
01:23:57Instead the umpire rings him up
01:23:59for the backwards kick.
01:24:02Stepping in the long ball threat.
01:24:04Edgar Martinez.
01:24:06Known for his late inning heroics.
01:24:12In there and it's own one.
01:24:17He's got it.
01:24:19He's got it.
01:24:21He's got it.
01:24:23He's got it.
01:24:25He's got it.
01:24:27He's got it.
01:24:29He's got it.
01:24:37Tying run at first.
01:24:39The winning run at the plate.
01:24:45Next offering is in for a strike.
01:24:47Well he didn't like those first two pitches.
01:24:49Now in an 0-2 hole.
01:24:51He's going to have to battle.
01:24:53Hope he gets a mistake.
01:24:55One guy that was really great
01:24:57Paul Cabrera.
01:24:590-2 now.
01:25:01And a foul ball.
01:25:03He stays alive.
01:25:05Just missed.
01:25:07If he's able to connect on that.
01:25:09Look out.
01:25:17Next one misses.
01:25:19And it's 1-2.
01:25:21Straighten him up a little bit.
01:25:27And a foul ball.
01:25:41And a 1-2 again.
01:25:43Stays alive.
01:25:571-2 here.
01:25:59And downstairs.
01:26:13And a swing and a miss.
01:26:15Now only one out remaining.
01:26:17Stood absolutely no chance
01:26:19on that slider right there.
01:26:21And I don't mean to laugh,
01:26:23but that's a tough one.
01:26:25Pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch.
01:26:27It looks like a fastball middle end.
01:26:29Kind of has cutter action.
01:26:31And it just bunches you up
01:26:33to where you can't get your hands through
01:26:35and the barrel to it.
01:26:37Not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early
01:26:39and you spit on it.
01:26:41Now it's going to be Mike Cameron.
01:26:43And first offering is fouled off.
01:26:55Oh yeah!
01:27:03And that's it for a strike.
01:27:05That's a big run over there at first base.
01:27:07He's got some speed. Let's see if they send him.
01:27:13A one run lead.
01:27:15And the home team trying to pull it out.
01:27:17Next pitch is popped up.
01:27:19He pulls it down.
01:27:21Ball game.
01:27:23And the Astros hold on to win a tight one
01:27:25as this one ends as a one run ball game.
01:27:27It's always nice to grab the opener of a series.
01:27:29You come into a new ballpark
01:27:31and just sometimes things aren't as comfortable
01:27:33as what you've been used to.
01:27:35The mound doesn't look straight.
01:27:37The background isn't what you like.
01:27:39But they didn't let any of those things distract them.
01:27:41In fact, they look like they're going to be
01:27:43a little bit more comfortable.
01:27:45They didn't let any of those things distract them.
01:27:47In fact, it looked like they were playing a home game.
01:27:49Excellent job to set the tone for this series.
01:28:15Are you ready to win this?
01:28:17Not just another easy ride.
01:28:19Don't lose your faith.
01:28:21Don't lose your place.
01:28:23You'll choose your way.
01:28:25Whoa.
01:28:27How high?
01:28:29How high?
01:28:35Fans, our final line score tonight.
01:28:37First for the victorious Astros.
01:28:39Two runs on five hits.

01:28:43That's what I'm talking about.
