00:00:00And welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. Interleague baseball on MLB The
00:00:18Show. It's the Detroit Tigers taking on the All-Stars. John Shombie along with Chris Singleton
00:00:25and seeing the big bat in the lineup so far this year. Monte Irvin leads the team at OPS.
00:00:31So he's the guy that looks to slug and basically make things happen for them offensively. Just
00:00:36a machine in terms of production at the plate. He'll take his walks, he'll barrel up the
00:00:41baseball, hit the ball in the gap so that the ball over the fence. So talk about a guy
00:00:45going good. That's him right now. And he's a bat that you want to stay away from if you're
00:00:50the pitcher. Just about to get started. So here's the lefty, Bill Foster. What do we have on him?
00:00:59Well, he got into the eighth inning his last time out. Really pitching deep into games as
00:01:04of late. We'll see today how many innings he's got in him. Ty Cobb up now for the Tigers. Cobb
00:01:17having a really nice first season in the big leagues. Definitely a rookie of the year candidate.
00:01:29The pitch. And there's the strike.
00:01:39First pitch, 7-11. But why the kick to pitch? Ball on there.
00:01:47And a pitch. Lifted in the air out to left. Bell racing over to make the catch.
00:02:10Let's take a check of the Tigers lineup. It features one of the sport's true superstars, Lance Parrish.
00:02:19Simply put, one of the elite players in the game. Arguably the best player in the game.
00:02:24Just an absolute unbelievable talent. Always so much fun to watch him go out there and do his
00:02:29thing. Sit back and enjoy the show and hopefully he's able to do something special in this one.
00:02:35Sam Crawford up now for the Tigers.
00:02:42And first offering is fouled off.
00:02:55Out to short. Lloyd gloves it. Now the throw to first on the run. And a couple of quick outs.
00:03:04Batting third, the right fielder number six, Al Caline. Two out, space is empty.
00:03:13And up next for Detroit, Al Caline. And what a two-way player. Not just offensively,
00:03:18but as good a defensive outfielder as there is in the game.
00:03:23First offering and it just misses. That's what you want. It's a good miss.
00:03:28The next pitch misses. Now 2-0.
00:03:33Two outs.
00:03:37Left field, way back there. That's back.
00:03:41Pulls it in on the warning track. End of a half inning of play.
00:03:46On to the bottom of the first. No score after a half inning.
00:03:50No score after a half inning.
00:03:56Bottom of the first and pitching in this game, number 27.
00:04:01Well I'm looking to see if he can increase the amount of swings and misses and perhaps get more
00:04:06strikeouts because hitters are batting over 300 against him and that means guys are getting the
00:04:11barrel to the ball. Exit velocity has got to be pretty good when you have that kind of batting
00:04:16average. So he's going to have to find a way to do something different in this one.
00:04:19Bottom of the first and now James Bell.
00:04:25On the ground right side. Garinger handles the chance.
00:04:29Throws the first. One gone. Bottom half of the first.
00:04:33And let's take a look at the lineup.
00:04:50Next up, it's the first year shortstop, Pops Lloyd.
00:04:55Well in their win last game, this guy came up with two home runs.
00:04:59Obviously trying to keep the roll going here in this one.
00:05:03First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:05:13There's a strike. Everyone can have a little chuckle there. He's had such a great season.
00:05:18Rarely ever do you see that kind of swing.
00:05:22Wouldn't chase that time.
00:05:39Here's a two on.
00:05:42And strike two.
00:05:48Pitch is in the dirt and that's ball three.
00:05:59Righty to the plate.
00:06:03Fouled off again and it remains three and two.
00:06:07Line drive and that's a base hit out of the center field.
00:06:27Batting third. Stepping in the long ball threat, Josh Gibson.
00:06:38First offering misses badly for ball one.
00:06:41Good speed on the base pass. He handles the bat very well.
00:06:45I wouldn't be surprised if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run or run and hit.
00:06:53Throw over to first and he dives back in safely.
00:07:00Lloyd stands at first with one out.
00:07:02Here's the pitch. Runner goes. That's in for a strike.
00:07:10Throw there. Safe.
00:07:12Chris's wheels with a difference maker on that plate just got in there.
00:07:17Yeah, with Stadcast's help, we see his top speed on this stolen base and that's a big number.
00:07:22I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one.
00:07:27The 101. And another ball.
00:07:30Hitter's got some good opposite field power.
00:07:32What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield
00:07:37is that the base runner at second has a very good read
00:07:40and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit.
00:07:44Makes the catch and there's two down.
00:07:47Well, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there.
00:07:51I'm telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat.
00:07:57Number seven getting ready to hit.
00:08:07First offering misses the mark.
00:08:15Man on second, two down.
00:08:17Slice down the right side.
00:08:29Man at second.
00:08:33Well, triple digits on the gun.
00:08:35I know there are more guys that can reach that now than in the past,
00:08:38but it's still impressive to watch.
00:08:41And down on strikes.
00:08:43That ends the frame.
00:08:45We played an inning. No score.
00:08:58Welcome back. New inning getting started.
00:09:00Here's some real power at the plate.
00:09:02Number seven.
00:09:04Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average.
00:09:08But one of the things in today's game, the value
00:09:10the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties.
00:09:15Here comes a pitch.
00:09:17And a good fastball to start him off at strike one.
00:09:20They're so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris.
00:09:23And it's huge when you don't have to sit a guy or platoon him.
00:09:26When you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitcher's arms,
00:09:29you're a guy that it's hard to take out of the lineup.
00:09:32And I think it's very important today when everything is under the microscope.
00:09:36Making the calls behind the plate in this one is Woody Keller.
00:09:39Yeah, and Woody does a pretty good job back there, Boog.
00:09:42He's got a pretty fair strike zone most of the time.
00:09:45Maybe some inconsistency here or there.
00:09:47But usually he's back there doing a solid job.
00:09:53Two balls and a strike.
00:09:54Here it comes.
00:10:06The pitch.
00:10:06Fouls one away, and now three and two.
00:10:10Good zip on that fastball at the bottom of the zone.
00:10:13If he's there all day, it's going to be a tough one for the hitters.
00:10:19Got him swinging.
00:10:21And one out now.
00:10:22Well, when you commit to throwing an inside fastball to your glove side
00:10:26across the strike zone, especially with two strikes,
00:10:28if you're going to miss, you want to miss off the plate end.
00:10:32You do not want to leave it out over the heart of the plate.
00:10:34So that was excellent execution on that pitch.
00:10:37Really tied him up, and he couldn't get a piece at all.
00:10:40Number 20.
00:10:41Up now for the Tigers.
00:10:46Up the middle.
00:10:48Whips it to first.
00:10:49Two up, two down on the top of the second.
00:10:55Batting six.
00:10:56Mid-shortstop, Allen Trammell.
00:11:01Two out, space is empty.
00:11:02Two out, space is empty.
00:11:04And next to hit for Detroit, Allen Trammell.
00:11:07You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond,
00:11:11and this guy is at the top of the list.
00:11:15That one's in there, 0-1.
00:11:17Yeah, we go beyond just the fielding percentage and what it looks like,
00:11:22but the ability to have a range and close holes that are normally there
00:11:27against an average defender.
00:11:29This guy is special, and you can see it in his first-step quickness.
00:11:33Next offering is in for a strike.
00:11:41The wind and the pitch.
00:11:43That's off the mark, and the count is even, 2-2.
00:11:46Boogan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump,
00:11:50and defense shouldn't either.
00:11:52Hitting-wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics,
00:11:55but the thing that you can do consistently every single game
00:11:58is play great defense if you're talented in that way,
00:12:01and this is what this guy does.
00:12:03The wind and the pitch.
00:12:07Dives, and he can't hang on.
00:12:10He doesn't have a play, and he's on it first.
00:12:15Pretty much did the opposite of what you want to do with the pitch
00:12:18on the outside part of the plate like that.
00:12:19Just rolled over, but good hustle down the line and got the infield knock.
00:12:25Two outs, runner at first.
00:12:27Lance Parrish up now for the Tigers.
00:12:31First pitch, not close.
00:12:41Second inning here, no score.
00:12:47Here goes the runner.
00:12:49Pitch in for a strike.
00:12:51Go to second, ow!
00:12:53And that will end the inning.
00:12:54Don't try to get in a scoring position,
00:12:55but a great catch and throw to end the inning.
00:12:59That's the way to pick up the pitcher.
00:13:06Back here at the ballpark, and stepping in is the speedy.
00:13:13And the right-hander back to work.
00:13:17And he pumps it a strike.
00:13:19Don't impress that he went right after him on that first pitch.
00:13:22That's the key.
00:13:22Try to get ahead in the count,
00:13:24and you can play around a little bit more at bad expense.
00:13:28The 0-1.
00:13:32Swing and a tap, and it rolls foul.
00:13:42The 0-2.
00:13:46Swing and a miss.
00:13:47The velocity, you blasted it right past him.
00:13:50Tell you what, those are the types of guys pitchers really like to punch out
00:13:53when they're on the mound,
00:13:54because if they get on, just the distraction that they create
00:13:58with all that speed over on the base pass,
00:14:01it can take away your focus from the next hitter,
00:14:03and that's the last thing you want to do,
00:14:05is serve up a pitch that a guy hits over the fence,
00:14:08and it's a multi-run home run.
00:14:11Next to hit, number 14.
00:14:21No score here in the second.
00:14:23The 0-2.
00:14:27Next pitch misses inside, and now 2-0.
00:14:36One down, base is empty.
00:14:40Swing and a miss, now 2-1.
00:14:43Love to see it.
00:14:44Power versus power right there.
00:14:47The count 2-1.
00:14:50Yeah, that one is in for a strike.
00:14:54Off the mark there, 3-2 now.
00:15:11Left-hand batter waits.
00:15:14Got him.
00:15:15Two gone now.
00:15:19Back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame,
00:15:22and that's now three in a row.
00:15:23Yeah, he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches,
00:15:27throwing them where he wants to right now,
00:15:29so we'll see how long he can keep this streak going.
00:15:32Next to hit, number 30.
00:15:35First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:15:49Righty delivers.
00:15:52And it's even up.
00:15:55Nothing, nothing here in the bottom of the second.
00:16:02Next one off the plate inside, and it's 2-1.
00:16:07The pitch.
00:16:12And that's ripped into left, base hit.
00:16:19Showed some really nice patience in that at bat.
00:16:21Worked himself into a good count.
00:16:23Solid swing from start to end, on time with everything.
00:16:26Really good balance, nice extension,
00:16:29and he made it out front for the line drive knock.
00:16:31And now they've got some speed on first,
00:16:33so we'll see if they try to get him into motion.
00:16:35Runner at first with two away.
00:16:37And now, William Johnson.
00:16:40Good contact guy, good defender.
00:16:52Check on the runner.
00:16:53Back in safe, really close.
00:16:57Number 30 off of first with two away.
00:17:03And there's something you don't see very much in today's game,
00:17:07the pitch out.
00:17:20Runner on the move.
00:17:22Pitch misses inside, and it's safe.
00:17:25It's a stolen base.
00:17:27That was close, but Stackcast shows us why he so often
00:17:31seems to be on the safe side of these steal attempts, Chris.
00:17:34Yeah, you see that plus speed,
00:17:36and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag.
00:17:40Such a threat on the bases.
00:17:42There's the strike, 3-1.
00:17:44Back-to-back fastballs in.
00:17:45That last one called for a strike.
00:17:47Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there
00:17:49to try to finish you off.
00:17:51The 3-1.
00:18:00Swing and a miss at 100 miles an hour.
00:18:07And he deals.
00:18:10Base knock, center field.
00:18:13Cobb fires it to the plate.
00:18:15Tag, safe at home.
00:18:17And it's 1-0.
00:18:21Two consecutive base hits for these guys here.
00:18:24That's about as textbook as it gets.
00:18:25Got his stride blowed out of the way early.
00:18:28He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front.
00:18:31Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a team.
00:18:35So two down, and now the right fielder, Monty Irvin.
00:18:41Next pitch downstairs, and that's ball one.
00:18:51At the belt and fires.
00:18:57And that one missing low.
00:18:58Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first,
00:19:02he's in a favorable hitters count.
00:19:04Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in.
00:19:092-0.
00:19:10And there's the strike.
00:19:12Pretty rare location right there, right down the middle.
00:19:14This guy paints the edges.
00:19:16I'm not sure if you're going to see that pitch again as a hitter.
00:19:21The 2-1.
00:19:24And a foul ball.
00:19:39Bounced up the middle, sneaks through, base hit.
00:19:43Throw in, holds the lead runner at second.
00:19:462-1 now with Jule.
00:19:49Right there, it is a great pitch.
00:19:50Right there, he does a great job of staying in the big part of the field.
00:19:53Man, there are a lot of hits there.
00:19:58So the batting order turns over, and the batter now, James Bell.
00:20:06First pitch, and he just misses.
00:20:08Well, he's just given up three straight hits,
00:20:10and now behind in this count to this hitter.
00:20:13Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout.
00:20:15Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit.
00:20:20Two outs.
00:20:21A couple of base runners at first and second.
00:20:28Next offering upstairs.
00:20:29Tough spot right here.
00:20:30A couple of runners on.
00:20:32Two ball count.
00:20:33You can't nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch.
00:20:37If you leave something out over the plate, it's going to bring in some runs.
00:20:412-1, two outs.
00:20:43That one missed.
00:20:44Now 3-0.
00:20:50And the right-hander deals.
00:20:59Pumps in a strike, and now 3-1 the count.
00:21:12Yeah, there's ball four.
00:21:22Now that sets up a really big at-bat in this game.
00:21:25These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in.
00:21:30The batter will be the shortstop.
00:21:31Pops Lloyd.
00:21:34Well, he's so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations.
00:21:39If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open.
00:21:43And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:22:01Swing and a ball lifted in the air.
00:22:03Shallow left field.
00:22:05Base hit.
00:22:05One run is in.
00:22:07The tag, and that's out number three in and over.
00:22:12We played two full.
00:22:13The All-Stars with the advantage on the scoreboard.
00:22:16Two to nothing.
00:22:25And welcome back.
00:22:27Now, Lance Arish.
00:22:29This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively.
00:22:32Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate.
00:22:36Good game caller.
00:22:37Good at framing, but it's that big arm that really stands out.
00:22:42Foster back to work.
00:22:44That's in for a strike.
00:22:46When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate,
00:22:51it really shuts down the running game.
00:22:53Comes up empty on the swing.
00:22:55Going two now.
00:23:01And now one and two.
00:23:06The one-two.
00:23:09And a foul ball.
00:23:10He stays alive.
00:23:18One and two here.
00:23:20And now two and two.
00:23:26The two-two.
00:23:29Out to short.
00:23:30Lloyd picks it up.
00:23:32Zips it to first.
00:23:34Leadoff hitter gone in the third.
00:23:36And it's in for the Tigers.
00:23:38Charlie Gerringer.
00:23:40Batting at the second baseman, Charlie Gerringer.
00:23:48And next up for the Tigers, Charlie Gerringer.
00:23:52There you see his May and June numbers so far.
00:24:06Inside and it's 1-0.
00:24:08Is there a little wrinkle to that?
00:24:09I think there was.
00:24:11Yeah, a little slider action.
00:24:16Kicks and fires.
00:24:20Straighten him up a little bit.
00:24:27The wind of the pitch.
00:24:31Line drive, base hit right center field.
00:24:33Takes the turn.
00:24:34He's digging for second.
00:24:36And that's going to roll to the wall.
00:24:37Not stopping.
00:24:38He's going for three.
00:24:40And he's got himself a triple.
00:24:44These guys today are so great with handling velocity.
00:24:46They're seeing high speeds day after day.
00:24:49And a nice job of turning that one around.
00:25:02Here's the third baseman, number 24.
00:25:06First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:25:28In the air, out towards right center.
00:25:32Irvin pulls it down.
00:25:34Runner tagging from third.
00:25:35Now a relay to the plate.
00:25:37Not in time.
00:25:38He scores.
00:25:40And they trail by one.
00:25:42There you go.
00:25:42Nice little RBI there.
00:25:44It's a graded bat.
00:25:45Got the job done.
00:25:50Digging in, it's the speedy outfielder Ty Cobb.
00:25:54We talk about guys with good speed.
00:25:56And definitely he has it.
00:25:58But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris.
00:26:02It's the defensive side that I think the speed
00:26:05factors in the most.
00:26:08And a pitch.
00:26:12Slice the other way.
00:26:13That's a base hit.
00:26:20That pretty much split the zone down the middle.
00:26:22And those are the ones where you gotta make them pay.
00:26:29Two outs, runner at first.
00:26:31Sam Crawford now at the plate.
00:26:36And that's in there for strike one.
00:26:40Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position.
00:26:45Just really impressive.
00:26:46Because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat.
00:26:49Automatically, that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit.
00:26:52Or they may have extra bases.
00:26:54And he just takes it away.
00:26:56Next offering is in for a strike.
00:26:58Cobb leads off first with two down to the inning.
00:27:05Next offering misses.
00:27:07And the count one and two.
00:27:08And what makes him even quicker is the fact that he's so dialed in on the pitch
00:27:12as it's moving through the hitting zone.
00:27:14He can see how that hitter's lined up.
00:27:15What he's trying to do.
00:27:17And where that pitch is going to end up.
00:27:19Which gives him that really quick first step.
00:27:21And that's why he makes so many great plays.
00:27:24Got it.
00:27:24Good job at damage control right there.
00:27:28So they pick up a run on two hits.
00:27:29No errors and a man left.
00:27:31We move on to the bottom of inning number three.
00:27:34The All-Stars top two to one.
00:27:41Bottom of the inning.
00:27:42Here's the catcher.
00:27:43Josh Gibson.
00:27:45And this is a guy that doesn't just impact the game defensively.
00:27:49They count on him to deliver.
00:27:51He's the first guy at the ballpark.
00:27:53He's got to study opposing hitters.
00:27:56He's got to get familiar with his starting pitcher for that night.
00:28:00And he's getting in the cage to take his swings.
00:28:02That's a whole lot.
00:28:03And so many times goes unnoticed.
00:28:15Right-hander kicks deals.
00:28:18And that's outside.
00:28:36The wide to kick the 2-0.
00:28:48And that's a fair ball.
00:28:51And that one's going to get into the corner.
00:28:55Into second easily with a lead-off double.
00:28:57When you fall behind in the count,
00:28:58you've got to come into the zone.
00:29:00And then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard
00:29:02like you did right there.
00:29:08And that's a fair ball.
00:29:09And that one's going to get into the corner.
00:29:13Into second easily with a lead-off double.
00:29:16And now the first baseman, number seven.
00:29:26Now that's number seven.
00:29:30In there for strike one.
00:29:42The pitch.
00:29:43That one off the mark.
00:29:45And that's ball one.
00:29:51The pitch.
00:29:53Misses outside.
00:29:54And it's 2-1.
00:30:02And here it comes.
00:30:04And there's a ball.
00:30:05Get ready for some action here.
00:30:07Good RBI guy at the plate.
00:30:08Runners in scoring position.
00:30:10And a hitter's count.
00:30:13Runner at second.
00:30:14Nobody out.
00:30:21Swing and a line drive.
00:30:22Base hit out of the center field.
00:30:24Cobb fires it to the plate.
00:30:27In there.
00:30:28He scores.
00:30:29It's 3-1.
00:30:31Well, patience and discipline paid off right there
00:30:33as he got into an advantage count.
00:30:35Got a fastball.
00:30:36Middle of the plate.
00:30:37Jumped all over it.
00:30:38Absolutely smoked that ball.
00:30:39So digging in.
00:30:41Number 15.
00:30:45Now that's number 15.
00:30:49In there and it's own one.
00:31:03Kicked Sandeos.
00:31:05Line drive.
00:31:06Base hit.
00:31:09Lead runner to second.
00:31:10So 2-1 and nobody out.
00:31:12That's now three hits in a row for the offense.
00:31:15Pretty much a model swing on that one
00:31:17as he ripped it into the opposite field gap.
00:31:18And I'm sure he's going to be watching that one back on video
00:31:21because that's the kind of swing you want to bottle.
00:31:23So many positives that led to that knock.
00:31:27Number 14 digs in now.
00:31:31And it's in.
00:31:32Number 15 digs in now.
00:31:38That one's in there, own one.
00:31:50And a pitch.
00:31:52No outs.
00:31:54Runners at first and second.
00:32:00Ground ball right side.
00:32:02Could be two.
00:32:04Goes to second for one.
00:32:06That was a much-needed double play right there.
00:32:08It gives him a really good shot at minimizing any further damage in this inning.
00:32:22Now it's the second baseman.
00:32:24Number 30.
00:32:26Feels like it's less common today
00:32:28that you see a guy like this.
00:32:30The speed component.
00:32:32The contact component.
00:32:34But lack of power.
00:32:40And that's in there for strike one.
00:32:42He just has to understand
00:32:44that his skill set is unique
00:32:46and he's very valuable.
00:32:49He just has to understand
00:32:51that his skill set is unique
00:32:53and he's very valuable for any ball club.
00:32:55If he does that, he'll play a long time in this league.
00:33:07And that one sliced foul.
00:33:10And a pitch.
00:33:12And a pitch.
00:33:14Next offering misses down and away.
00:33:16Next offering misses down and away.
00:33:32And a weak ground ball to the left side.
00:33:34Sends it across to first.
00:33:36What a play to end the inning.
00:33:38and the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It's now a 3-1 ball game.
00:33:55Welcome back. John Chompy with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Al Kaline.
00:34:08And a pitch. And there's a strike on the outside corner. He'll want just off the inside edge.
00:34:30Here comes a pitch. Good eye right there.
00:34:38There's a strike up high. It's two and two.
00:34:49The pitch. And down on strikes he goes. One away.
00:34:55Number seven will hit next. First offering and it just misses.
00:35:14Swing and a miss.
00:35:29Ball to strike. Fastball almost got him there.
00:35:34Two balls, one strike.
00:35:44To the right side and that chance handled in plenty of time. The first two quick outs here
00:35:50in the top of the fourth. Well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air.
00:35:54Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Number 20 up now
00:36:00for the Tigers. Singing you gotta appreciate a guy who's this good defensively. I mean watching
00:36:06him track balls on the outfield it is beautiful. Next offering is down low. Ball one. And I would
00:36:16say that most great defensive outfielders it's kind of natural there is some work that you can
00:36:22do to it to improve your game but ultimately you either have it or you don't.
00:36:29Next pitch inside three balls no strikes.
00:36:42And a four pitch walk. It's tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but
00:36:49now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter but he needs to get back into the strike
00:36:54zone and start pitching with conviction. There's one guy that I can think about Boog who started
00:37:01as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for
00:37:07the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that's all
00:37:13he ever played in his life was the outfield.
00:37:22Throw to first. Backstanding. He's in there safely.
00:37:36Tying run at the plate. Got a curve drops in for a strike.
00:37:40And a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next
00:37:46pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact. Swing and a miss and that is that.
00:37:55One left for Detroit and it remains a 3-1 ball game.
00:38:11Ready to go. Bottom four. Now the third baseman William Johnson.
00:38:19It's good speed at the top of the order here you want to get it on see if you can get a stolen
00:38:22base maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. First pitch and he just misses.
00:38:30Righty to the plate.
00:38:34And it's one and one.
00:38:35And the righty deals.
00:38:53Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One down. Well that's a curveball that people like to describe
00:38:59as a hammer or Uncle Charlie and you can see why. It's not a looping slow curve.
00:39:04He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end.
00:39:12Now it's the right fielder Monty Irvin.
00:39:18First offering misses the mark.
00:39:28Called strike right there.
00:39:44Next one misses. Now two balls and a strike.
00:39:54But why the kick the pitch?
00:39:59And that one lifted in the air center field. Cobb on his way over and there's two away.
00:40:06This is important if he can go one two three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team.
00:40:15Digging in is the switch inning outfielder James Bell. This is a guy you got to keep an eye on
00:40:20when he digs in. Definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time and he's pretty good
00:40:26at it Chris. Yeah and he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the
00:40:31speed because of the ability to put down that bunt. Oh one down.
00:40:39Now you see even sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat the shift.
00:40:47And one and two.
00:41:01And a swing and a miss and good work there as he gets a one two three.
00:41:17Back here at the ballpark all set for the start of the inning and here's the catcher Lance Parrish.
00:41:23The catcher Lance Parrish.
00:41:33The pitch and there's a foul ball.
00:41:46The 0-1 is outside and it's a ball and a strike.
00:41:54The wind and the pitch. Swing and a miss and they count one and two.
00:42:05And he deals.
00:42:10Playing two balls two strikes.
00:42:15And a swing and a miss and that's the first out. Well he showed a lot of conviction with the
00:42:21fastball there not just because of the velocity but also the ability to command it on the inside
00:42:26part of the play. The last thing you want to do in two strikes is just get too far in there and
00:42:31it gets away and hits the batter so when I see a two strike fastball bunch up a guy like that
00:42:36it tells me there's a lot of confidence in that pitch. Carringer the next to hit takes outside.
00:42:45And that one pulled foul.
00:43:05The pitch. Swing and a miss chased it out of the zone. Pretty impressive we haven't seen that pitch
00:43:12from him much but he's got a really good feel when he throws it. Left hand hitter waits.
00:43:21Out to short. On the run throw to first. Two up two down.
00:43:30Now batting number 24.
00:43:32Number 24 up now for the Tigers. It's interesting he plays kind of a power spot defensively but
00:43:43runs pretty well so when you're looking at that position you're not expecting someone
00:43:48that has maybe above average speed but he does. Two down nobody on and he gets tied up right there.
00:43:56And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed
00:44:02it makes the whole team that much better. Next pitch inside and it's one and two.
00:44:09And now the lefty stays alive.
00:44:23And down on strikes. Out number three. Down in order go the Tigers and they still trail it here
00:44:31three to one. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it's the shortstop Pops Lloyd.
00:44:46And the right hander back to work.
00:44:50Swing get a ball popped up and it drops in. Around first and hustling for second the throw in
00:44:57in there just beat the tag it's a double. Well here we are third time through the order and this
00:45:02is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner
00:45:08than he anticipated. Josh Gibson the next to hit one for two. Now batting catcher
00:45:26jump in the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:45:44The 1-0. That one in triple digits. Meanwhile activity in the bullpen. Number 17 getting
00:45:52loose for A.J. Hinch. Number 15 a right hander loosening up as well.
00:46:04Next pitch misses way outside.
00:46:10Lloyd at second with nobody out.
00:46:12The next offering misses three and one now.
00:46:31That smash towards center. Kyle puts it away. Runner tagging for third and he's in safely at
00:46:40third with one out. Man he smoked that fastball. It's all over it. It's just frustrating when you
00:46:45can't get it to fall. Maybe next time off he'll find a hole. Stepping in number seven.
00:46:59Hard hit to third. Base hit and a run into score.
00:47:06What if they're looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle.
00:47:09Just one of those seen high base hits through the infield and just kind of rolled over on
00:47:13it a little bit but sometimes those can find a hole and get you enough.
00:47:20Man at first with one gone. Now here is number 15. Now batting. Number 15. That one pulled foul.
00:47:40So
00:47:57yeah the right hander deals and a foul ball. He stays alive.
00:48:09Kicks and fires. That one the other way, makes the grab, two down.
00:48:20How about it? Number 14.
00:48:27And at first, number 14 getting ready to hit. He is quite an athlete.
00:48:33I mean, you look around the other sports, basketball, football,
00:48:36you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports too.
00:48:45First pitch, and he has to get out of the way.
00:48:57Two outs.
00:49:01When you get ahead in the count, there's no doubt that the success rate goes up,
00:49:05and that's what he's been doing. It's made a big impact for him in recent games.
00:49:14This one high in the air to left center.
00:49:19Cobb makes the catch, and that'll do it.
00:49:22So one run in the inning on this base hit, it's now a 4-1 ballgame.
00:49:36And welcome back. All set for the top of the sixth, and here is Ty Cobb.
00:49:42Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts, and they are available to pitchers,
00:49:47but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball,
00:49:50and is kind of different from the players that we see day in, day out.
00:50:06Cut.
00:50:16The wind of the pitch.
00:50:18Cut out and missed. Struck him out, and one away.
00:50:22Dominating strikeout there on just three pitches,
00:50:25and that's what a good power pitcher can do to you.
00:50:27He's hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone.
00:50:30Sometimes he bats over before it really begins.
00:50:36Digging in, Sam Crawford.
00:50:44First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:50:56Left-hand batter waits, and that one fouled off.
00:51:06And a pitch.
00:51:09This one smoked out to left.
00:51:12Bell pulls that one down, two away.
00:51:18Now batting, the right fielder, Al Kaline.
00:51:23Al Kaline, up now for the Tigers.
00:51:27First pitch, and he just misses.
00:51:33And he deals.
00:51:37Well, it's been a very impressive outing so far.
00:51:39His command has been a big part of it.
00:51:42Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone,
00:51:45which is exactly what a pitcher wants.
00:51:48He's got a lot of control.
00:51:50He's got a lot of control.
00:51:52Outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants.
00:52:012-0.
00:52:04Breaking ball through there for a strike.
00:52:06It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today.
00:52:10Good fastball, excellent slider,
00:52:12but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there.
00:52:16Makes the grab on the run-up, and that will end the inning.
00:52:20On to the bottom of inning number six.
00:52:23The All-Stars out front here, 4-1.
00:52:33Back down for the bottom of the sixth,
00:52:35and there's a new pitcher on the mound, number 17.
00:52:38On for his 20th appearance of the year.
00:52:41At this point in the ballgame, we're talking about middle innings,
00:52:44and a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen.
00:52:48We'll see just how many outs he's able to give his skipper.
00:52:51There we go, bottom of sixth.
00:52:53Now it's going to be number 30.
00:52:57The wind of the pitch.
00:53:00That one out to right.
00:53:02This looks like extra bases.
00:53:04Around first, heading for two.
00:53:08And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double.
00:53:11First pitch swing in, went up there with a plan to be aggressive.
00:53:14When you pop a ball up like that,
00:53:15you don't expect it to get you a knock too often,
00:53:18but right there, somehow he got it to drop in behind first base,
00:53:21and that's where no one could get to it.
00:53:29So a man aboard.
00:53:31Here's a speed threat, William Johnson.
00:53:33Now batting, third baseman, William.
00:53:37First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
00:53:46That one pushed foul.
00:54:00Stays alive.
00:54:16Squirts away a little bit.
00:54:18Down a second, but he dances back in safely.
00:54:22Number 30 leads off second with nobody out.
00:54:29That one the other way.
00:54:31Hauls it in for the out.
00:54:34That one the other way.
00:54:36Hauls it in for the out.
00:54:44Now batting, right fielder, Montee Irvin.
00:54:51And now the right fielder, Montee Irvin.
00:54:54See, he's got a history of coming through in the big spots.
00:54:57I know, I like to talk about,
00:54:59I'm not sure whether Clutch actually,
00:55:01I know, I like to talk about,
00:55:03but you look at the numbers,
00:55:05and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots.
00:55:14Late swing, fouled off.
00:55:20Runner at second here, one gone.
00:55:28Right side, hard hit.
00:55:30Gathers and throws to first.
00:55:33And that is out number two.
00:55:35Fastball grew right down the middle,
00:55:37usually a lot of damage done with that pitch.
00:55:39A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air,
00:55:41maybe drive it into the gap.
00:55:48So the lineup flips over,
00:55:50and now here's a speed threat.
00:55:52Outfielder, James, a strikeout and a walk.
00:56:01First offering, misses the mark.
00:56:15And here it comes.
00:56:18In the air, left field, number 20,
00:56:20drifts towards it, and that'll do it.
00:56:24I travel by car, town to town, city to city,
00:56:27trying to reach the people and sell my CDs.
00:56:30This is my grind, it's what I'm committed to.
00:56:32If it don't sound good, maybe it ain't for you.
00:56:38We go to the top of the seventh,
00:56:39and here's the first baseman, number seven.
00:56:42The Tigers in striking distance, but have some work to do.
00:56:46Boog, it starts with the leadoff man.
00:56:48Need a good at-bat out of him right here.
00:56:50Foster, back to work.
00:56:53Tapped at the plate, but it's a foul ball.
00:57:01The 0-1.
00:57:04Swing and a miss, as he was out front that time.
00:57:08Activity in the bullpen, number 24, up and throwing.
00:57:12Number 23, the hard-throwing right-hander, up as well.
00:57:17That's towards center, number 15.
00:57:20Ranging back, makes a nice running catch.
00:57:24And a quick out, number one.
00:57:26Now batting, number 20.
00:57:32Number 20, up now for the Tigers.
00:57:35Number 20.
00:57:39Number 20, up now for the Tigers.
00:57:51Puts it in the air, out towards left-center.
00:57:54Brings it in with a nice running grab.
00:57:57And they're two outs.
00:57:59For batting, number three, shortstop.
00:58:03And now, Alan Trammell.
00:58:15In there for strike one.
00:58:17Some guys are just more confident.
00:58:19They can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher.
00:58:21They don't care if they fall behind 0-1.
00:58:25Next offering misses.
00:58:27And the count is 1-1.
00:58:39Kicks and deals.
00:58:41Look out!
00:58:43And it hit him.
00:58:44Well, it's safe to say he won't be getting invited to the charity golf tournament this offseason.
00:58:49Now, here is Lance Parrish.
00:58:53Parrish.
00:59:03First offering, and it just misses.
00:59:06Trammell, off a first with two away.
00:59:13Next pitch misses, 2-0.
00:59:23And now the lefty.
00:59:25There's a strike.
00:59:30Moved to first.
00:59:32Back in there standing.
00:59:43The pitch.
00:59:45Liner snagged it first!
00:59:49Tigers lead one.
00:59:51And this is still a 4-1 ballgame.
01:00:03Welcome back.
01:00:04Here's the shortstop at the plate.
01:00:06Pops Lloyd.
01:00:08Chris, his skill set straight out of the mid-80s.
01:00:11Good contact, not much power, and he can run.
01:00:14He always uses the wheels to his advantage.
01:00:17His biggest challenge in this day and age is to not get caught up in trying to hit home runs,
01:00:22because so many people are.
01:00:26Strike two.
01:00:27I think baseball's starting to understand that those guys are valuable like they once were.
01:00:32They need them in this game today.
01:00:35Pitch misses there.
01:00:36Now 1-2.
01:00:44Fouled off, he was late.
01:00:47Strike two.
01:00:57Line drive.
01:00:58He can't get there.
01:00:59That should be extra bases.
01:01:01Makes the turn and heads for second.
01:01:03Now the tag at second, and he's out, trying for two.
01:01:08Gotta love the hustle and the attitude there to try to stretch that single into a double,
01:01:13but unfortunately thrown out at second base.
01:01:15He was so close to being in scoring position.
01:01:19And now the catcher comes up to hit.
01:01:21Josh Gibson.
01:01:25That hits the dirt, and that is ball one.
01:01:38The pitch.
01:01:41And now it's even up.
01:01:43He got away with one there, but he knows he can't go into that spot very often against a guy like this.
01:01:50Here's a 1-1.
01:01:53Out to short.
01:01:54Trammell.
01:01:55Hoping to pick it up.
01:01:56On the run, sends it over to first.
01:01:58And that's an out.
01:02:02Seeing an impressive jump throw from the hole at short.
01:02:05Let's see what StatCast has to say.
01:02:07Now he's just showing off out there.
01:02:09I mean, I don't know if fans realize how much arm strength you need to make that throw.
01:02:14This guy's got a rocket of an arm, and that was on full display right there.
01:02:18Just an awesome job.
01:02:20Stepping in, the long ball threat, number seven.
01:02:25And the first pitch misses for ball one.
01:02:39Kicks and fires.
01:02:42Swing and a foul back.
01:02:43That's out of play.
01:02:54Next pitch is inside, and it's 2-1.
01:03:10Two outs.
01:03:13And that's down and away.
01:03:27And that's in there at the knees.
01:03:35And that's ball four.
01:03:37Boog, if I were him, I'd be nibbling around the plate as well.
01:03:40I mean, this guy is just capable of hitting pitches outside of the zone and driving them a long way.
01:03:46And stepping in is the speedy number 15.
01:03:56Swings through that one, 0-1.
01:03:58Well, as a left-handed hitter, you kind of expect that breaking ball from the lefty.
01:04:03So you just want to track it and get an idea, because you know it's going to come into play later in the at-bat.
01:04:180-2 now.
01:04:20And ball one.
01:04:21I don't like to say he wasted a pitch.
01:04:23I think that was a purpose pitch.
01:04:25Change the eye level, have him look up.
01:04:27Now go back exactly where you want to go.
01:04:33And a ball and two strikes.
01:04:35And a foul ball, he stays alive.
01:04:47Next pitch in the dirt.
01:04:49And the count is 2-2.
01:04:500-2.
01:05:02Got him looking.
01:05:03Inning over.
01:05:14Back here at the ballpark.
01:05:15We're at the top of the eighth.
01:05:16And now it's going to be Charlie Gerringer.
01:05:19The second baseman.
01:05:21The pitch.
01:05:24That misses the zone.
01:05:251-0.
01:05:29And a pitch.
01:05:32Two balls, no strikes.
01:05:33The count.
01:05:37And a pitch.
01:05:41That one's spoiled.
01:05:42And the count now, 2-1.
01:05:49Here comes a pitch.
01:05:52That one fouled off, 2-2.
01:06:04And now the count filled up, 3-2.
01:06:10And a payoff pitch.
01:06:12Fouled off again.
01:06:14And it remains 3-2.
01:06:20The wind and the pitch.
01:06:23The punch out there.
01:06:25Leadoff man is out here in the eighth.
01:06:27Well, really nice job of finishing the hitter off right there.
01:06:30Gloveside command, fastball firm to the outside corner.
01:06:34Tell you what, very difficult to do anything with that pitch, even if you do swing.
01:06:50Number 24 up now for the Tigers.
01:06:57And first offering is fouled off.
01:07:12The pitch.
01:07:14Strike two.
01:07:20And a pitch.
01:07:23Swing and a miss.
01:07:24Struck him out.
01:07:26So he's gotten deep into this game.
01:07:29And at least so far, not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
01:07:39And now the center fielder, Ty Cobb.
01:07:45Ground ball right side.
01:07:49Off balance throw, in time.
01:07:51And the Tigers retired 1-2-3.
01:07:54Home half of inning number eight straight ahead.
01:07:57The All-Stars with the lead 4-1.
01:08:04On to the bottom of the eighth, and here is...
01:08:07With this kind of lead, he can swing freely.
01:08:09Try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do.
01:08:13And a pitch.
01:08:16In for a strike.
01:08:17It's 0-1.
01:08:18Activity in the bullpen for Detroit.
01:08:20John Hiller preparing to come on if needed.
01:08:29Left-hand batter waits.
01:08:32Swing and a ground ball out to short.
01:08:35Throws across the diamond.
01:08:371-up, 1-down.
01:08:39Now that's number 30.
01:08:46Number 30 digs in now.
01:08:58Beck's pitch downstairs, and it's 1-0.
01:09:05And here it comes.
01:09:06And here it comes.
01:09:09Way high.
01:09:18The wind of the pitch.
01:09:21And a foul ball makes the count 2-1.
01:09:30A wide kick to pitch.
01:09:33And that's in for a strike.
01:09:371-1.
01:09:42This one in the air, center field.
01:09:45Cobb makes the catch, and there's two down.
01:09:52Now batting, third baseman, William Johnson.
01:09:57William Johnson, now at the plate.
01:09:59He's someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed,
01:10:03but he can absolutely move, and it is a factor in his game.
01:10:11First pitch, and he just misses.
01:10:14This guy's definitely a plus runner.
01:10:15But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time.
01:10:19Never takes a break.
01:10:20It's guys like that.
01:10:21Even though they don't have the elite speed,
01:10:23the fact that they're consistent with it,
01:10:25they make moves on the base paths.
01:10:34The other way.
01:10:35And that's just foul.
01:10:43The wind of the pitch.
01:10:46That misses.
01:10:47And that's ball 3.
01:11:00Swing and a miss.
01:11:01He was late.
01:11:02Strike 2.
01:11:03They can live up in the zone all game if guys will chase it.
01:11:07That's just too much velocity.
01:11:08Hitter's got to look down in the zone.
01:11:12Bounce back to the mound.
01:11:15Gets it to first.
01:11:16That's the third out.
01:11:17Inning over.
01:11:32We're back.
01:11:33It's the top of the ninth.
01:11:34And there's a new pitcher on the mound.
01:11:35Rube Foster.
01:11:37Not many pitchers have it,
01:11:39but he'll break out a screwball from time to time.
01:11:43All set to start the ninth in this one.
01:11:45Now the number 2 hitter, Sam Crawford.
01:11:51The pitch.
01:11:54See the velocity.
01:11:5697 with that fastball.
01:11:58Foster.
01:11:59A very difficult guy to get hits off of.
01:12:02It's really rare for teams to string stuff together against him.
01:12:05He wins every pitch.
01:12:07And for a hitter,
01:12:08sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches.
01:12:12Back to right.
01:12:14Irvin as he glides to his left.
01:12:16Pulls it in on the run.
01:12:18And there's one down.
01:12:25Al Caline.
01:12:26Caline up now for the Tigers.
01:12:29Unless he beats himself,
01:12:31somehow can't find it,
01:12:33doesn't have the control command that day,
01:12:35he can pretty much forget about it.
01:12:37First pitch doesn't find the zone.
01:12:42And the righty deals.
01:12:45And it's fouled away.
01:12:57Next offering is downstairs.
01:12:59As a hitter,
01:13:00there's even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake, right?
01:13:03Yeah.
01:13:04And you're hoping that somehow, some way,
01:13:06whether it's a hit by pitch, a walk,
01:13:08something bad happens.
01:13:10Because outside of that,
01:13:11stuff is just too good to fail.
01:13:16Next offering flips the zone,
01:13:17can't even a two.
01:13:19It's been tough for the offense so far,
01:13:20but you can't get frustrated.
01:13:22You gotta find a way to shake it off,
01:13:23go up there and relax.
01:13:25That's the only way you're going to be able to put runs up on the board.
01:13:41In the air to left center.
01:13:44Racing makes the catch.
01:13:47That's out number two.
01:13:52And next will be the Tiger cleanup hitter.
01:13:54Number seven.
01:13:57And he's got deception in his delivery.
01:13:59And it's not that he's trying to deceive the hitters.
01:14:01He just has this natural flow
01:14:04that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up.
01:14:06It gets on them a little bit quicker than they anticipate,
01:14:09even though they know what the velocity numbers are.
01:14:12Next one is off the play.
01:14:14And the count is 2-0.
01:14:20That one missed.
01:14:25Let's see if he gives them anything to hit here.
01:14:29Swing and a foul.
01:14:31Pushed off to the right,
01:14:32and that will get out of play.
01:14:38And the 3-1.
01:14:41They're down to their final strike.
01:14:43While so many hard-throwing relievers in the game these days,
01:14:46you would think that guys have made the adjustment,
01:14:49but I don't know if you ever get used to it.
01:14:51Just pumping gas out of the bullpen
01:14:53so hard to play catch-up.
01:14:58Down to their final strike.
01:15:01And a swing and a miss,
01:15:03and that is the ball game.
01:15:05Another outing, another save.
01:15:07That's his 20th of the season,
01:15:09and this was a good example of why they rely on him
01:15:12so heavily in these postgames.
01:15:144-1 the final here today.
01:15:16For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew
