Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for killing two African-American men. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. Reformed and fresh out of prison, Derek severs contact with the gang and becomes determined to keep Danny from going down the same violent path as he did.

00:11:59He
00:12:08You gotta fucking stand up
00:12:11So
00:12:26We've got a whole file on skinheads here skinheads all part of the same gang venice beach gang
00:12:37Yeah, that's it right there
00:12:41This morning we have a guest coming in and there he is
00:12:44Morning. Morning, sir. Hey
00:12:47Good to see you pal morning gentlemen. This here is. Dr. Bob sweeney
00:12:51He's principal over at venice beach high and for some time now
00:12:54He's been doing outreach work with gangs both in and out of the camp
00:12:58Now three years ago a local kid named derek vineyard was sent up for murdering a couple of crips
00:13:03Who were trying to jack his car?
00:13:05Well, bob taught vineyard back in high school and he's followed the case kind of closely
00:13:10It was a skinhead right? He was more like the skinhead the protege of cameron alexander who cameron alexander
00:13:19Here you go. Have a look-see
00:13:22Cameron alexander. Well
00:13:24He's a venice beach landmark. He's probably the biggest distributor and writer of white power literature and videos in la county
00:13:30He promotes white power bands. He writes reviews and in his spare time
00:13:34This guy writes hate columns. Does he have a record?
00:13:38He's pretty clean i've been trying to pin something to him, but it doesn't work trust me
00:13:43He's behind all of it
00:13:45He runs everything out of his house down by the beach
00:13:47There were no white gangs in venice beach before cameron alexander and derrick vineyard hooked up alexander found in derrick his shining prince
00:13:55Essentially, he used derrick to recruit a slew of insecure
00:13:59Frustrated and impressionable kids this kid vineyard. Well, he's got a lot of baggage
00:14:05As you'll see in this tape that we've gotten courtesy of nbc
00:14:16Earlier today la county firefighter
00:14:18Dennis vineyard was shot and killed battling a blaze and a suspected compton drugged in we're at the vineyard home right now and
00:14:24Lieutenant vineyard's oldest son. Derek has agreed to talk with us for a moment. Derek
00:14:29If you could come down here, please for just a second
00:14:32Look I know this is tough. But um, how do you feel right now?
00:14:37How do you think I feel
00:14:40I think it's typical typical how
00:14:44Well, this country's becoming a haven for criminals. So what do you expect?
00:14:48You know decent hardworking americans like my dad are getting rubbed out by social parasites parasites
00:14:56Blacks browns
00:14:58Yellow, whatever
00:14:59I don't understand you're saying that you think maybe your father's murder was race related. Yeah, it's race related
00:15:04every problem in this country's race related not just crime, it's like
00:15:08Immigration aids welfare. Those are problems in the black community the hispanic community the asian community
00:15:14They're not white problems. Derek. Aren't those really issues that deal more with poverty? No, you know?
00:15:19No, they're not products of their environments either
00:15:21That's crap minorities don't give two shits about this country that come here to exploit it not to embrace it
00:15:26What does this mean millions of white european americans came here and flourished, you know within a generation
00:15:31So what the fuck is the matter with these people? They have to go around shooting at firemen
00:15:37What does this have to do with the murder of your father because my father was murdered doing his job
00:15:41Putting out a fire in a fucking nigger neighborhood. He shouldn't have even given a shit about
00:15:45He got shot by a fucking drug dealer. He probably still collects a welfare check
00:15:50I'm, sorry
00:15:51Derek vineyard was quietly released from chino early this morning after serving three and some odd years
00:15:57Now I think this is something we got to keep an eye on if something happens to him
00:16:01Things could get very ugly down by the beach. Just keep it low
00:16:07Venice beach didn't always look like this
00:16:10It used to be a great neighborhood
00:16:12The boardwalk's always been a dump. But when my dad moved us out here venice was a nice quiet place to grow up
00:16:20Over the years though. It's just gone to hell
00:16:24The gangs are like a plague. They moved west from inglewood and south central and basically took over
00:16:30It ain't
00:16:47Hey, yo, is that that fool you were telling me about yeah, that's that motherfucker
00:16:52Motherfucker
00:16:59Yeah, man
00:17:11That's why derek started the doc
00:17:14He said white kids shouldn't have to walk around scared in their own neighborhood
00:17:19for a while there
00:17:20He really made it like it was ours again
00:17:22Throw the ball
00:17:25Come on curtis, we're chucking it up past the ball
00:17:35Look at this fucking jungle bunny. He does a spin move every time every time

00:22:31Three years without him just wondering
00:22:34Yeah, and then seven o'clock this morning we picked him up outside the gate

00:35:07Hey, let's go. Come on, we're not here to fucking socialize.
00:35:11Get the fuck out, man.
00:35:14Want a little toke?
00:35:18Curtis, what is that?
00:35:19Oh, come on, Derek.
00:35:21Wheaties for niggers. Put that away right now.
00:35:25Have a little self-respect.
00:35:28All right, listen up. We need to open our eyes.
00:35:33There's over 2 million illegal immigrants bedding down in this state tonight.
00:35:39This state spent $3 billion last year
00:35:43on services for those people who had no right to be here in the first place.
00:35:47$3 billion.
00:35:48$400 million just to lock up a bunch of illegal immigrant criminals
00:35:53who only got into this country because the fucking I.N.S. decided
00:35:56it's not worth the effort to screen for convicted felons.
00:36:02Who gives a shit? Our government doesn't give a shit.
00:36:07Our border policy is a joke.
00:36:09So is anybody surprised that south of the border they're laughing at us?
00:36:13Laughing at our laws?
00:36:15Every night thousands of these parasites stream across the border
00:36:18like some fucking piñata exploded.
00:36:20Don't laugh.
00:36:22There's nothing funny going on here.
00:36:24This is about your life and mine.
00:36:27It's about decent, hard-working Americans
00:36:29falling through the cracks and getting the shaft
00:36:32because their government cares more about the constitutional rights
00:36:35of a bunch of people who aren't even citizens of this country.
00:36:38On the Statue of Liberty it says,
00:36:40give me your tired, your hungry, your poor.
00:36:42Well, it's Americans who are tired and hungry and poor.
00:36:45And I say until you take care of that, close the fucking book.
00:36:48Because we're losing.
00:36:51We're losing our right to pursue our destiny.
00:36:54We're losing our freedom
00:36:56so that a bunch of fucking foreigners can come in here and exploit our country.
00:37:00And this isn't something that's going on far away.
00:37:03This isn't something that's happening places we can't do anything about it.
00:37:06It's happening right here, right in our neighborhood,
00:37:09right in that building behind you.
00:37:11Archie Miller ran that grocery store since we were kids here.
00:37:14Dave worked there, Mike worked there.
00:37:17He went under, and now some fucking Korean owns it
00:37:20who fired these guys, and he's making a killing
00:37:23because he hired 40 fucking border jumpers.
00:37:26I see this shit going on, and I don't see anybody doing anything about it.
00:37:30And he fucking pisses me off.
00:37:33So look around you.
00:37:36This isn't our fucking neighborhood. It's a battlefield.
00:37:39We're on a battlefield tonight. Make a decision.
00:37:42Are we going to stand on the sidelines,
00:37:45quietly standing there while our country gets raped?
00:37:49Are we going to ante up and do something about it?
00:37:52You're goddamn right we are.
00:38:08Don't you know it's against the law to hire fucking border jumpers, you neck bastard?
00:38:19Hey, you see that?
00:38:21No, no, no, you don't need this. It's not going to hurt you.
00:38:24Please, no!
00:38:27I'm going to throw it at you, you fucking bitch!
00:38:33I think this bitch is going to bother me.
00:38:36Oh, man, this bitch stinks. Get her some clean vomit.
00:38:39She smells like fish and chips and guacamole.
00:38:48Oh, my God.
00:38:55Get out, man!
00:38:58Get the fuck out!
00:39:03Get the fuck out!
00:39:06Leave him alone, man!
00:39:09Leave him alone!
00:39:12Leave him alone, man!
00:39:15Get out!
00:39:22Get some of that in there.
00:39:25Throw it on, throw it on.
00:39:28That's a great color on you.
00:39:31A little bit of this one, huh?
00:39:34You're going to move up in the world, huh?
00:39:37Asshole!
00:39:40Come on, let's go. We're out of here. Everybody out.
00:39:43Now, now!
00:39:48All right, let's go, let's go!
00:39:51Come on, let's go, let's go, let's go!
00:39:54Let's go!
00:39:58No green card, no fucking work, comprende?
00:40:04Come on, come on!
00:40:13Come on, come on!
00:40:43We just didn't see it coming.
00:40:46Maybe we should have.
00:40:49The irony is that most of the stores that were destroyed during the riots were owned by black people.
00:40:53That's stupid, though. I mean, why trash your own neighborhood?
00:40:56Well, that's my point. It's an irrational act.
00:40:59It's like an expression of rage by people who feel neglected and turned away by the system.
00:41:05Exactly. I mean, it's like we had in Watts or the riots in Chicago in 68.
00:41:10Crap, I don't buy that for a minute. Calling a riot an irrational expression of rage, that's such a cop-out.
00:41:15It's opportunism at its worst.
00:41:17It's a bunch of people grabbing any excuse they can find to go and loot a store. Nothing more.
00:41:21You know, the fact that these people ripped off the stores in their own communities,
00:41:24all that reflects is the degree to which these people have absolutely no respect for the law at all,
00:41:28and certainly no concept of, like, community or civic responsibility.
00:41:33Wait a minute. White people commit crimes against white people, too.
00:41:37They're not offing each other in record numbers all over America.
00:41:40Look at the statistics, for Christ's sakes.
00:41:42One in every three black males is in some phase of the correctional system.
00:41:46Is that a coincidence, or do these people have, you know, like a racial commitment to crime?
00:41:51Not only that, they're proud of it.
00:41:53Well, maybe it says something about prejudice in the judicial system.
00:41:56Yeah. If you want to talk about criminal statistics,
00:41:58you might want to take a look at the social inequalities that produce them.
00:42:02Yap, yap. You know what? That's exactly what I hate.
00:42:04Because what you're doing, Davina, is taking one thing and calling it something else
00:42:07and just, you know, alleviating the responsibility that these people have for their own actions.
00:42:11You know, it's like saying, it's not a riot, it's rage.
00:42:14It's not crime, it's poverty. It's just nonsense. It's bullshit.
00:42:18You know, it's exactly what happened in this trial, too,
00:42:20because the media twisted things around so people got all focused on, you know, these cops
00:42:24and whether or not they were going to get convicted
00:42:26and whether Rodney King's civil rights had been violated.
00:42:29I mean, everybody lost sight of old Rodney King himself.
00:42:32I mean, the guy's a multiple felon by his own admission.
00:42:35He's high as a goddamn kite, driving 120 miles an hour down the highway.
00:42:39He gets pulled over by a bunch of cops, and he attacks them.
00:42:43He attacked police officers. That's the bottom line. And he walked.
00:42:46Yeah, and there's some yahoo there with a video camera who turned it on halfway through
00:42:50so that all we see is them hitting him.
00:42:52Exactly. You know, you've got Powell and Coon winding up and cracking him with billy clubs
00:42:56and Bersanio's kicking him in the back of the skull, so it looks severe, you know?
00:42:59And people are going, oh, this poor guy, this poor guy who attacked four cops,
00:43:02and those cops end up on the stand defending themselves
00:43:05for using absolutely standard textbook self-defense procedures.
00:43:09I don't think that the tape showed that at all.
00:43:11Oh, you didn't think so, huh? And what, you're an authority, Ma?
00:43:15Murray, what do you think?
00:43:18Well, I did think that the police used their clubs rather excessively.
00:43:22Who are you to say what's excessive? I think it was totally appropriate.
00:43:25I think they're in a better position to make that judgment call than you are.
00:43:28In fact, we as society grant cops a certain amount of authority to make those calls
00:43:32because we acknowledge that their job is difficult and dangerous, you know?
00:43:36Unfortunately, very few people, like, respect that or respect that authority.
00:43:40Look who's talking about respect here, Mr. Junior KKK.
00:43:43What?
00:43:44KKK.
00:43:45What? You know what? You want to go to college, Davina? You should learn to listen.
00:43:48Derek.
00:43:49I didn't say I respect the laws.
00:43:50Derek.
00:43:51I acknowledge a cop's authority.
00:43:52I don't respect any laws that let monkeys like Rodney King back on the street.
00:43:56Second of all, I am not, as you well know, a member of a low-rent, disorganized bunch of rednecks
00:44:01like the fucking KKK.
00:44:03Please.
00:44:04Take your head out of your ass.
00:44:06You've gotten off the point.
00:44:09I had a point, and it wasn't even a point.
00:44:11Do you have one?
00:44:12What is your point, Derek?
00:44:13All right, think about this. Think about this.
00:44:15If Danny had been walking across the street that night and Rodney King had plowed into him...
00:44:19Can we just drop this Rodney King thing?
00:44:22Mm-hmm.
00:44:26Who...
00:44:28Who would like some dessert?
00:44:32We're having a discussion.
00:44:33We're having a nice discussion, right?
00:44:35If Rodney King had been driving along, hopped up on a Chivas Regal and PCP and had killed Danny,
00:44:39you'd be singing a very different tune about the four of those cops.
00:44:41I didn't see him hit anybody in the tapes, and neither did you.
00:44:44He didn't happen to kill anybody, thank God.
00:44:46Put it down, okay? Allie's sleeping.
00:44:48If he had, though, I mean, come on, think about it.
00:44:50If that fucking monkey had run some kid over,
00:44:52everybody would have a very different opinion of this whole matter.
00:44:55You know, they'd be focused on Rodney King and not on these officers,
00:44:58but instead, he just attacked a few cops.
00:45:00And so, all of a sudden, it's hands across America for this fucking total son of a bitch.
00:45:04I mean, it blows my mind.
00:45:06We're so hung up on this notion that we have some obligation to help this struggling black man, you know?
00:45:10Cut him some slack until he can walk again.
00:45:13We have some obligation to help this struggling black man, you know?
00:45:16Cut him some slack until he can overcome these historical injustices.
00:45:20It's crap. This stuff you guys are saying just perpetuates it.
00:45:22All this liberal nonsense, you know?
00:45:24Everyone's turning and looking the other way while our country rots from the inside out.
00:45:28Christ, Lincoln freed the slaves, what, like 130 years ago.
00:45:31How long does it take to get your act together?
00:45:34Well, Jews have been persecuted for over 5,000 years.
00:45:37Are you saying that it's wrong to feel sensitive about anti-Semitism?
00:45:41Oh, forget that. I'm with you. I'm with you all the way, baby.
00:45:45I'm so sick of these liberal hypocrites.
00:45:47Oh, here we go again. I love this part. This is great.
00:45:50Well, look at the way that they scapegoated Chief Gates.
00:45:52I mean, you tell me they would have come down that hard on black Willie Williams.
00:45:55No way, because that videotape was the set-up to get rid of Gates.
00:45:59No. No, you cannot. Don't interrupt.
00:46:01Excuse me, I was talking. I listened to you.
00:46:04Don't interrupt her.
00:46:05Who the hell do you think you are?
00:46:06She's right in the middle of making a point.
00:46:07Who the hell do you think you are?
00:46:09Stavina, sit down. Sit down!
00:46:11Be quiet! Shut up!
00:46:13Sit down!
00:46:14Derek, calm down.
00:46:15Shut up! Shut up!
00:46:16Don't tell him to shut up!
00:46:17No, sit your ass down.
00:46:18You move.
00:46:19No, sit down. Shut your mouth.
00:46:20Derek, move!
00:46:21No!
00:46:22God damn it, Derek, move!
00:46:23Sit down, shut your mouth, and give your girlfriend some respect.
00:46:25Derek, what are you trying to prove?
00:46:27Murray, stay out of it! Come here!
00:46:29Hey, where do you think you're going?
00:46:31Get back!
00:46:32Derek, let her go!
00:46:33Derek, let her go!
00:46:34I'm finished with you. You need to learn some fucking manners, Stavina.
00:46:37Shut your fucking mouth!
00:46:39Shut up!
00:46:40Stop!
00:46:42She can't breathe!
00:46:44Let her go!
00:46:46Are you going to apologize?
00:46:48Are you going to apologize?
00:46:50Are you?
00:46:51You're a fucking asshole.
00:46:52I hate you!
00:47:03What are you doing, Derek? This is your family.
00:47:05Right, my family. My family.
00:47:07So you know what? I don't give two shits about you or anybody else or what you think.
00:47:11You're not a part of it, and you never will be.
00:47:13That has nothing to do with it.
00:47:15Oh, it doesn't? You don't think I see what you're trying to do here?
00:47:17You think I'm going to sit here and smile while some fucking kike tries to fuck my mother?
00:47:21It's never going to happen, Murray.
00:47:23Fucking forget it. Not on my watch. Not while I'm in this family.
00:47:26I will fucking cut your Shylock nose off and stick it up your ass before I let that happen.
00:47:31Coming in here and poisoning my family's dinner with your Jewish, nigger-loving, hippie bullshit.
00:47:41Fuck you! Fuck you!
00:47:43Yeah, walk out!
00:47:45Asshole, fucking Kabbalah-reading motherfucker.
00:47:48Get the fuck out of my house!
00:47:55See this? That means not welcome.
00:48:02What did I do?
00:48:03You disgust me, you know that?
00:48:04What did I do?
00:48:05You disgust me!
00:48:06What did I do?
00:48:07Bringing him to our table and crimping your hair and your dress.
00:48:09What did I do?
00:48:10Don't touch me!
00:48:11What did I do to you?
00:48:12You're all tarted up.
00:48:13What did I do to you?
00:48:14How could you bring him to my father's table?
00:48:15How could you go from dad to that?
00:48:17Aren't you ashamed?
00:48:18I'm ashamed that you came out of my body.
00:48:23Go run to your fucking kite.
00:48:25Go run to him.
00:48:34I'm proud of you, baby.
00:48:43I'm so sorry, Yara.
00:48:45I'm so sorry.
00:48:47I'm so sorry.
00:48:49I'm so sorry.
00:48:51I'm so sorry, Doris.
00:48:53I really am.
00:49:02He's gone.
00:49:04He's just a boy.
00:49:06Without a father.
00:49:09Doris, you don't know the world your children are living in.
00:49:21Goodbye.
00:49:51Goodbye.
00:50:09Hey, you all right?
00:50:13Take this, you fucking bitch!
00:50:15No, no, no. Come here.
00:50:16Fuck you!
00:50:17Sabina, calm down.
00:50:18Let go of me!
00:50:19Calm down. Calm down.
00:50:20Dad!
00:50:21Fuck you!
00:50:22I'm sorry.
00:50:24I would never hurt you, you know that.
00:50:26Come on.
00:50:27I screwed up.
00:50:28I lost control.
00:50:29It's not you.
00:50:30I'm sorry.
00:50:31Come on.
00:50:32I'd never hurt you guys.
00:50:33I'd never hurt you.
00:50:34You know that.
00:50:35I'd do anything for you.
00:50:36I don't believe you.
00:50:38I trust you, Dad.
00:50:41Hi.
00:50:43Hi.
00:50:44What are you doing out of bed, huh?
00:50:46You want a plane ride?
00:50:47Yeah.
00:50:48Going for takeoff.
00:50:52Woo-hoo!
00:50:54Woo!
00:50:55Oh, no.
00:50:56Oh, no, no.
00:50:57Crash!
00:50:58Woo-hoo!
00:50:59Better go to Mom.
00:51:01Oh, she's a crazy flyer.
00:51:03Give me a hug.
00:51:04I love you.
00:51:05I love you.
00:51:06I love you.
00:51:07I love you.
00:51:08I love you.
00:51:09quez.
00:51:10Sorry.
00:51:11Can I give you a hug?
00:51:12Oh, yeah.
00:51:13Okay.
00:51:14I'll feel too hot?
00:51:15No, it's my chest, it's hot.
00:51:16Just what are you up to?
00:51:17I'm just thinking.
00:51:18Yeah, there's a lot of that going around.
00:51:19I don't even know how we got here sometimes.
00:51:30I feel like I let you all down, Melanie.
00:51:34I don't even know what had happened.
00:51:36Mom, it's okay.
00:51:38It's cold in here. I wonder you're sick.
00:51:41No, you don't get sick from the cold. You get sick from the germs.
00:51:44No, you get sick from smoking.
00:51:48You're going to quit. It's not good for you.
00:51:56What are you looking at me like that for?
00:51:59When are you going to let that beautiful hair grow back?
00:52:03The day you quit smoking.
00:52:06The day you quit smoking.
00:52:11Deal.
00:52:13I better get Ali to bed.
00:52:15You say goodnight to Mom?
00:52:17Then you have to go to bed. Come on.
00:52:19Goodnight, Mama.
00:52:21Goodnight, baby.
00:52:23Alright, goodnight.
00:52:36Goodnight.
00:52:57I go back to that night again and again in my mind.
00:53:00I try to stop it from happening.
00:53:02I want you out of this house.
00:53:05It's fine. I'll be gone in the morning.
00:53:07You can move in with me.
00:53:10In my mind, I imagine what would have happened if I hadn't gone to that room and told her.
00:53:17Let me get down!
00:53:19No, Nelly!
00:53:36Fuck!
00:53:38Nigga, you just fucked with the wrong bull.
00:53:41Come here!
00:53:43You should have learned your place on the fucking basketball court.
00:53:46But you fucking monkeys never get the message.
00:53:49My father gave me that truck, you motherfucker.
00:53:52You ever shoot at firemen?
00:53:54You come here, you shoot at my family?
00:53:56I'm going to teach you a real lesson now, motherfucker.
00:53:58Put your fucking mouth on the curb.
00:54:02Put it on the curb right now!
00:54:08That's it.
00:54:10Jack, no!
00:54:16Say goodnight.
00:54:19Fucker.
00:54:27Drop your weapon! Put your weapon on the ground!
00:54:30Put your hands up!
00:54:32I said get your hands up!
00:54:34Now turn around!
00:54:38I said get your hands up!
00:54:40I said get your hands up!
00:54:42I said get your hands up!
00:54:44Now turn around!
00:54:48Now turn around!
00:54:56Put your hands behind your head!
00:55:02Get down on your knees right now!
00:55:18Get down on your knees right now!
00:55:49I'm sorry.
00:55:51I'm sorry.
00:55:55Let's go.
00:56:19Who's that? She ain't going to open the door?
00:56:21I don't know.
00:56:22There's someone right fucking there looking at us.
00:56:24Danny, it's for you.
00:56:26I'll be right there.
00:56:40Open the door, Danny.
00:56:42It's fucking freezing.
00:56:44You're going to be sick.
00:56:47Come on, Danny.
00:56:55Be quiet!

00:58:27so Sweeney's making me write another one.
00:58:30Hmm.
00:58:32Good old Sweeney.
00:58:34He never stops trying, now, does he?
00:58:36Well, he's one of those proud-to-be-nigger people.
00:58:38I hate those guys.
00:58:40I already meant Danny.
00:58:42He's not proud.
00:58:44He's a manipulative, self-righteous Uncle Tom.
00:58:48He's trying to make you feel guilty
00:58:50about writing about Adolf Hitler.
00:58:52Yeah, some nigger,
00:58:54some spick writes about Martin Luther King
00:58:56or fucking Cesar Cami Chavez.
00:58:59Gets a pat on the head, huh?
00:59:01Yeah.
00:59:03Well, you can see the hypocrisy in that, can't you?
00:59:07Definitely.
00:59:14No, listen, listen to me.
00:59:17I want to see you, okay? I do.
00:59:20But I got to take care of something tonight.
00:59:23Okay.
00:59:25You understand?
00:59:27Yeah. I'm here. When you're ready, I'm here.
00:59:34Would you do something with me?
00:59:36Anything.
00:59:38Leave with me.
00:59:40Leave where?
00:59:42Leave here. Leave all this.
00:59:44Just come with me.
00:59:46Why would you want to leave? They worship you.
00:59:48You're like a god to them.
00:59:50I mean, if you think that we had it good before,
00:59:52wait till you see what it's like now.
00:59:54Listen, listen, I don't want all that.
00:59:56Everything I've done here has fucked it all up.
00:59:58Do you understand?
01:00:00You think what you did was wrong?
01:00:02Oh, baby, oh, come on.
01:00:04Those niggers got exactly what they deserved,
01:00:06and we all know that.
01:00:08I understand you just got out,
01:00:10but no one's gonna hurt you.
01:00:12No one can even touch you.
01:00:14I mean, there's a small army out there.
01:00:16We're not gonna let a bunch of spooks kick its ass.
01:00:18You're not listening to me, okay? I'm not scared.
01:00:20I don't want it anymore.
01:00:22I'm done with it. I'm through with this.
01:00:25It's...
01:00:27It's bullshit, Stacy.
01:00:29Listen, you don't need this, Stacy.
01:00:31Come on, trust me.
01:00:33If you want to be with me, just trust me.
01:00:35Come with me.
01:00:37Come on.
01:00:39You're nuts. You are nuts.
01:00:41No way.
01:00:43I don't think you realize what's been going on here.
01:00:45We are ten times what we were,
01:00:47and we are bloody organized.
01:00:49I mean, it is like nothing you have ever seen.
01:00:51This was a mistake. This was a mistake.
01:00:53Wait a second. Wait a second.
01:00:55What was a mistake? Stacy, just say good-bye.
01:00:57Say good-bye. This isn't you.
01:00:59I know you.
01:01:01You don't know anything about me, Stacy.
01:01:11Hey, are you Danny's brother? Yeah.
01:01:13You tell him Lizzie's looking for him.
01:01:15Lizzie. Thank you.
01:01:19We'll let the niggers, kikes, and spicks
01:01:21grab for their piece of the pie.
01:01:23Can't blame them.
01:01:25Of course, they're going to have to fight together.
01:01:29And if we scare the fuck out of people
01:01:31and a few people get killed in the process,
01:01:35so be it.
01:01:37You going to put that in your paper, Danny?
01:01:39Hey, man.
01:01:41Well, look who's here.
01:01:43The return of the soldier.
01:01:47What are you doing here, Danny?
01:01:49Come on, man. I had to check it out.
01:01:51You knew I was going to come.
01:01:53Let the kid alone, Derek.
01:01:55He knows when to go to bed.
01:01:59Go wait outside.
01:02:01Come on, Dan. I'm not doing anything.
01:02:03Come on. There's this little blonde girl.
01:02:05She's sitting out there. She keeps asking for you.
01:02:07She's dying. Come on.
01:02:09Okay, well, I got to check out.
01:02:11Go easy on her. All right.
01:02:15Wait for me right outside.
01:02:20All right.
01:02:22Take it easy.
01:02:24Chill out.
01:02:26You're on safe ground.
01:02:29You don't have to watch your ass around here.
01:02:33Come on. Sit down. Relax.
01:02:37You know, I'm sorry.
01:02:39The party was a little quick,
01:02:41but we're just so damn glad you're back, Derek.
01:02:43It's only natural you should feel a little funny.
01:02:45I don't feel funny, Cam.
01:02:47You know, you made the fat kid a little nervous.
01:02:49He thinks the joint messed with your mind.
01:02:51It did.
01:03:00Go, Victoria!
01:03:02Yeah!
01:03:04Go, Victoria!
01:03:06Yeah!
01:03:08What?
01:03:10What?
01:03:12You see, things have changed
01:03:14since you've been gone, Derek.
01:03:16You talk about organization.
01:03:18Wait till you see what we've done with the Internet.
01:03:20We've got every gang from Seattle to San Diego
01:03:22working together now.
01:03:24They're not competing anymore.
01:03:26They're consolidated.
01:03:28The only thing we lack is a little overall leadership.
01:03:30And that's where you come in.
01:03:32Because people out there,
01:03:34they've got a lot of respect for you, Derek.
01:03:36When you're ready, you ought to come and talk to me about it.
01:03:38Well, you can forget about that.
01:03:40I'm done with it, Cam.
01:03:42Yeah, well, I know you
01:03:44grew out of that shaved-head bullshit a long time ago.
01:03:46But I like your hair the way it is now.
01:03:48You see, that's what I mean, Derek.
01:03:50We're thinking bigger now.
01:03:52No more of this fucking grocery store.
01:03:54You're not listening to me.
01:03:56I am done with it.
01:03:58All that bullshit out there and all your bullshit, too.
01:04:00I'm out.
01:04:02I understand how you feel.
01:04:04I mean, you've just done some hard time.
01:04:06Don't you fucking talk to me about hard time.
01:04:08You don't know a thing about it.
01:04:10Hey, I've done mine.
01:04:12I've told you my prison story.
01:04:14You did two months, and then you rolled over on two kids
01:04:16and let them go down for you.
01:04:18So don't feed me your fucking lies, Cameron.
01:04:20All right.
01:04:22This is stupid. I'm done.
01:04:24Now, you go cool off.
01:04:26Get laid. Do something.
01:04:28Get your head on straight. Then I'll talk to you.
01:04:30Yeah, but it doesn't even really matter if I don't, does it?
01:04:32Because you've got the next crop all lined up and ready to go,
01:04:34you fucking chicken hawk.
01:04:36Excuse me?
01:04:38You prey on people, Cam.

01:04:44but I am on to you now, you fucking snake.
01:04:46Hey, Derek, watch it. Be careful.
01:04:48Remember where you are.
01:04:50This is not some fucking country club
01:04:52where you can waltz in and out of here.
01:04:54Shut up! Shut the fuck up!
01:04:56I came in here to tell you one thing.
01:04:58I am out. Out! And Danny is out, too.
01:05:00And if you come near my family again,
01:05:02I'm gonna fucking kill you.
01:05:04Well, excuse me, but fuck you, Derek.
01:05:06You can't come barking threats at me.
01:05:08But Danny is a good kid.
01:05:10He's not some whining pussy like you.
01:05:12He needs my help, and I'm gonna give it to him.
01:05:14If you come near Danny again,
01:05:16I will feed you your fucking heart, Cameron.
01:05:18I won't have to.
01:05:22He'll come to me.
01:05:24I'm more important to him now than he'll ever be.
01:05:32You're a fucking dead man, vineyard.
01:05:38Oh.
01:05:50Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
01:05:52Where's Cameron? Where the fuck is he?

01:10:07All the wrong people knew who I was anyway,
01:10:09so I figured I'm just going to put up a fight.
01:10:38Fuck.
01:10:46Fuck.
01:11:07Fuck.
01:11:38Let's see.
01:11:52Don't fuck with me, all right?
01:11:54I'm the most dangerous man in this prison.
01:11:57You know why?
01:11:59Because I control the end of it.
01:12:08All right, we pick them up over here,
01:12:10and we sort them over there.
01:12:11And I hope you can work out, all right?
01:12:13Because the last guy they sent me didn't wear no drawers,
01:12:16couldn't read the sizes in the drawers,
01:12:18and used to sniff the drawers, all right?
01:12:20We got two sizes, medium and large, all right?
01:12:23All you got to do is put the mediums with the mediums,
01:12:25and the large with the large, all right?
01:12:27Now, look here, I know it's a boring job,
01:12:29but it's better than that last shit they had me doing.
01:12:31I spent two years in the kitchen,
01:12:33scrubbing hot-ass pots and pans.
01:12:35That, you don't want to do, all right?
01:12:38So, man, you should be happy as shit that you land this job, all right?
01:12:40And you tell them what the hell they have you do up in the joint.
01:12:45By the way, uh...
01:12:48What you in for?
01:12:52Probably robbing some old lady, huh?
01:12:55Cheers, man.
01:13:01I'm tired, man.
01:13:06Okay, I know your kind, right?
01:13:08Bad-ass peckerwood with an attitude.
01:13:12But let me tell you something, man.
01:13:14You better watch your ass.
01:13:16Because in the joint,
01:13:18you the nigga, not me.
01:13:24I was a year in.
01:13:26I thought I was cruising.
01:13:28Then everything started getting complicated.
01:13:55Hey.
01:13:57What the fuck is that?
01:14:01What's that all about?
01:14:03It's just politics, man.
01:14:05Favors, you know.
01:14:08He's doing favors for that fucking spic?
01:14:12Mitch has got a little something extra on the side with them boys, you know?
01:14:17You're kidding, right?
01:14:19No.
01:14:21That's bullshit, man.
01:14:23I should say something to him.
01:14:25What the fuck is he thinking?
01:14:27Mitch is the only reason why you're not a corpse right now.
01:14:29Remember that.
01:14:30You know what? I don't fucking give a shit.
01:14:32I can take care of myself.
01:14:34He shouldn't be doing that.
01:14:36I'm getting sick of it, man.
01:14:37There's a lot of fucking hard talk around here
01:14:39and not a lot of follow-through.
01:14:43I think you better chill out on the preaching bullshit, okay?
01:14:47We're getting a little tired of that shit around here.
01:14:50Ease up on it.
01:15:21What are you doing here, Doris?
01:15:23I was in the neighborhood.
01:15:25Yeah, well, look, I told you, I don't want you all coming up here to see me.
01:15:28I don't care what you told me, okay?
01:15:31I need to talk to you now.
01:15:51So how is everyone?
01:15:53Devina's great.
01:15:55She's, uh, getting straight A's almost,
01:15:58and, uh, Allie's walking.
01:16:01She's starting to talk a little.
01:16:08How's Danny?
01:16:10Danny?
01:16:12Danny...
01:16:14He held you up so high.
01:16:18He held you up so high.
01:16:21He thinks you're the greatest.
01:16:24He's always bragging about you to Cameron
01:16:28and all his new friends.
01:16:33He's starting to remind me of you.
01:16:35Jeez, don't sound so worried, all right?
01:16:38I'm sure he's fine.
01:16:40I mean, he's 16 years old, Doris.
01:16:42He's not gonna be a little angel forever, you know?
01:16:44You think because I watched my firstborn fuck up his entire life
01:16:48that I can sit here and see my baby falling down the same toilet?
01:16:52You know what? I can't fix all this shit from up here, okay?
01:16:55Don't bring this shit up to me,
01:16:56because all it does is make me feel bad.
01:16:58I'm trying to get through this, and you're just making it harder.
01:17:00You think you're the only one due in time, Derek?
01:17:03You think you're here all alone?
01:17:05You think I'm not in here with you?
01:17:15Fuck.
01:17:20Come on, man, look.
01:17:21Every day, I watch you go through these sheets
01:17:23like you're gonna get to the end of them.
01:17:25Look, nigga, will you chill the fuck out?
01:17:27Goddamn!
01:17:29No matter how fast you get through them, man,
01:17:31they're gonna keep bringing them in and bringing them in
01:17:33and bringing them in.
01:17:34And for a marauder, that ain't gonna do a damn thing
01:17:36but give you a fucking heart attack.
01:17:38And you know what? Let's go with me.
01:17:40But you know what you gotta do?
01:17:42You know what? Let's go with me.
01:17:43But you know what?
01:17:44You're gonna give me a goddamn heart attack, too.
01:17:54I know, I know.
01:17:55I'm just a dumb, stupid nigga, right?
01:17:57What do I know?
01:18:00I know I ain't the one getting mad at them damn sheets, though.
01:18:04Matter of fact, the only sheets I get mad at?
01:18:06I'll tell you.
01:18:09All right, boys, this is what we're gonna do.
01:18:11We're gonna hate some niggas.
01:18:12That's what we're gonna do today.
01:18:13We're gonna hate some goddamn niggas.
01:18:15That's all we're gonna do is hate some niggas all day.
01:18:17I don't even know what a nigga is, but you know what?
01:18:19We're gonna hate him.
01:18:20My cousin Derek is in the pen right now
01:18:22working next to a nigga, driving him nigga crazy.
01:18:38See?
01:18:46See?
01:18:47That's the ticket.
01:18:49Nice and easy.
01:18:52Now we can ignore each other in peace.
01:18:58Hey, what are you doing?
01:18:59You know what he tells me?
01:19:00He goes, it's better than the pig I just tried to fuck.
01:19:09Fuck him, too?
01:19:17What's up?
01:19:33He was taking it from the Mexicans
01:19:35and dealing it out to his own people.
01:19:37He didn't believe in shit.
01:19:39None of them did.
01:19:51Hey!
01:19:52Hey, vineyard!
01:19:54Come on.
01:20:06What?
01:20:08Come on, man, don't look at me like that.
01:20:11You know what that smells like, right?
01:20:13Come on, man, don't tell me this smell doesn't remind you of a woman.
01:20:18God, I miss the smell, man.
01:20:21I mean, the job I had on the outside wasn't much better than this one.
01:20:24But at least I got to go home every night
01:20:26and lie down next to this sweet smell, man.
01:20:31God, I miss that.
01:20:34You got a woman?
01:20:36Yeah, you got a woman, man.
01:20:37Let me give you some advice, all right?
01:20:40She comes to visit you.
01:20:43Whatever you do, no matter what,
01:20:45don't let her leave here in a fight, man.
01:20:47Don't let her walk out of here with a bad attitude,
01:20:49because if you do, you'll spend the next week
01:20:51wondering if she's out there getting her fuck on with somebody else,
01:20:54you know what I'm saying?
01:20:55So when she comes in to see you, man,
01:20:57it's nothing but sweet talk through that glass, man.
01:20:59Send her away floating, all right?
01:21:01Because it's not like the real world, you know what I'm saying,
01:21:03where you can fight, but it's cool to fight
01:21:05because you can make up and have that make-up sex,
01:21:07you know what I'm saying, that angry sex,
01:21:09that sex with an attitude,
01:21:11where you just lay on your back
01:21:13and let her take out all that aggression on you.
01:21:15All guys know that, man.
01:21:16That's that good sex.
01:21:17That's that pow, pow, pow.
01:21:19Let her get on top, and she's going to punish you first, right?
01:21:22You've been a bad boy, huh?
01:21:24You've been a bad boy, and I'm going to punish you.
01:21:26I'm going to put it on you.
01:21:28Don't you ever let me catch you
01:21:31looking at another woman.
01:21:34Yeah, yeah.
01:21:35I may forgive you if you bring it.
01:21:37I think I can.
01:21:38I forgive, I forgive.
01:21:40Oh, right there, right there.
01:21:42You're hitting it, my spot.
01:21:43That's it, right?
01:21:44Yeah, yes, yes.
01:21:45I forgive you.
01:21:47I forgive you.
01:21:48I forgive you.
01:21:51I love you.
01:22:10How do you figure the Lakers
01:22:12to ever be a bigger dynasty than the Celtics?
01:22:14The Lakers are like a flare-up, a fluke.
01:22:16Are you crazy?
01:22:17You know what I mean?
01:22:18Like one good coach for four years.
01:22:19The Celtics are like a dynasty.
01:22:20Oh, come on, man.
01:22:21The Celtics were like the ugliest team
01:22:23in the history of sports.
01:22:25A dynasty of ugly motherfuckers, man.
01:22:27Look at Kevin McHale.
01:22:29James Worthy?
01:22:30The guy has a head like a melon.
01:22:32No, he had ladies.
01:22:33I can't even talk to you.
01:22:35I don't even know what you're saying.
01:22:36You are tweaking Boston Celtics.
01:22:39How many is that?
01:22:41That's enough.
01:22:42No? All right.
01:22:53I lost count, man.
01:22:55Doesn't matter, man.
01:22:57Who's counting anyway?
01:23:06All right, so I want to know something.
01:23:09What the fuck landed you in here?
01:23:11You didn't kill anybody.
01:23:12You're too skinny for a gangbanger.
01:23:14Oh, ain't that a bitch, all right?
01:23:15Don't judge a book by its cover, man.
01:23:16I can throw these things, all right?
01:23:18You know what I'm saying?
01:23:19Yeah, whatever, whatever.
01:23:20Come on.
01:23:21Come on.
01:23:22What'd you do?
01:23:23Come on, man.
01:23:24It's none of your business, all right?
01:23:25It's embarrassing, all right?
01:23:26It's none of your goddamn business.
01:23:27Come on.
01:23:28What?
01:23:29Embarrassing?
01:23:30Everybody in here is embarrassed.
01:23:31You think nobody in here got away with anything?
01:23:33What'd you do?
01:23:36Look, man, I stole the TV, all right?
01:23:40You stole the TV?
01:23:41What's embarrassing about that?
01:23:42I stole the TV from a store that was right next door
01:23:44to a donut shop, all right?
01:23:46I run out, the store owner's running behind me,
01:23:48yelling, bam, I run into three cops, all right?
01:23:51Oh, see?
01:23:52See, I told you it was embarrassing.
01:23:53You laughed.
01:23:54Wait a sec.
01:23:55Wait a sec.
01:23:57That doesn't make sense.
01:23:59No, you didn't get six years for stealing a TV, man.
01:24:02Come on.
01:24:03I go in the store.
01:24:04I come out.
01:24:05Police officer grabs my arm.
01:24:07The TV falls on his foot and breaks it.
01:24:09They said I threw the TV at the officer.
01:24:11Assault.
01:24:12Six years.
01:24:13Come on.
01:24:14Tell the truth.
01:24:15You chucked it at him or something.
01:24:17Like I said, I came out of the store, grabbed my arm,
01:24:21and it fell on his foot.
01:24:29Come on, now.
01:24:30What you got for me?
01:24:31What you got for me?
01:24:32Huh?
01:24:33There you go, baby.
01:24:34There you go.
01:24:35That's what I'm talking about.
01:24:38There you go, baby.
01:24:47Bam!
01:25:08Oh, shit!
01:25:10Oh, fuck you!
01:25:11Oh, come here, pal!
01:25:13Hold him, hold him!
01:25:14You better stand up.
01:25:16Oh.
01:25:17Oh.
01:25:18You want to be a nigga sweet boy?
01:25:20Fuck you!
01:25:21We gonna treat you like one.
01:25:24No!
01:25:25Come on!
01:25:26No!
01:25:27You wanna be a nigga, sweet boy?
01:25:29Fuck you!
01:25:30We gonna treat you like one.
01:25:32No!
01:25:34Come on!
01:25:50Fuck you!
01:25:51That was real sweet.
01:25:58Fuck you!
01:26:22Fuck you!
01:26:32How is he?
01:26:34Only took six stitches.
01:26:52Fuck.
01:27:18Man, what the hell are you doing here anyway?
01:27:21Well, I came to talk about Danny, but we don't have to do that right now.
01:27:24I brought you some books.
01:27:28Well, what about him, you know? Don't keep me in suspense.
01:27:32He's headed right where you are.
01:27:35You know what? My mother already laid this trip on me, man.
01:27:39Danny's not my responsibility, you know?
01:27:41What do you expect me to do with that? It doesn't help me.
01:27:43Am I supposed to feel guilty?
01:27:45I don't want you to do anything.
01:27:48I need to know the truth about how you feel.
01:27:50What, do you think I want him in here? I mean...
01:27:53I don't know. I don't know what I feel. I'm all...
01:27:58I feel a little inside out.
01:28:01I don't know. There's some things that...
01:28:04that don't fit.
01:28:06Well, that happens.
01:28:09Look, Derek, you're too damn smart to be floating around here
01:28:12pretending you don't see all the holes in this bullshit.
01:28:15Hey, listen. You know what? I said I was confused.
01:28:17I didn't say I didn't believe in it.
01:28:18All right. That's why you have to stay open.
01:28:21Right now, your anger is consuming you.
01:28:23Your anger is shutting down the brain God gave you.
01:28:26God, you know, man, you've been talking about what's going on in me
01:28:29since I was in high school.
01:28:30How the fuck do you know so much about what's going on inside me?
01:28:33No, I know about me.
01:28:35I know about this place.
01:28:37I know about the place you are in.
01:28:40What do you know about the place I'm in?
01:28:42There was a moment...
01:28:44when I used to blame everything and everyone.
01:28:48For all the pain and suffering and vile things that happened to me,
01:28:52that I saw happen to my people.
01:28:56Blame everybody. Blame white people.
01:28:58Blame society. Blame God.
01:29:01I didn't get no answers because I was asking the wrong question.
01:29:05You have to ask the right question.
01:29:07Like what?
01:29:10Has anything you've done made your life better?
01:29:18No.
01:29:34God, help me.
01:29:38Just help me.
01:29:41Get me out of here, you know?
01:29:44I'm up in four months for a new year.
01:29:48Put in a word for it.
01:29:50I already have.
01:29:51So you're out there then, what?
01:29:53I don't want to fuck up my family anymore.
01:29:56I'll go as far away as I can get.
01:29:59That's not good enough.
01:30:01You want my help, you gotta do better than that.
01:30:04My help is not unconditional.
01:30:07But running just ain't good enough.
01:30:13I'm sorry.
01:30:44Fuck him.
01:30:45Fuck him.
01:30:46Fuck him.
01:30:47Let the niggers have it.
01:30:50Yo, what's up, D?
01:30:52Yo, what's all that bullshit you put in the mess hall, man?
01:30:56Are you out of your fucking mind?
01:30:57Are you fucking crazy?
01:31:00D, look at me, man.
01:31:02You can't make it in here on your own.
01:31:03Look, I'm not afraid of those fucking pussies, okay?
01:31:06There were six of them and they jumped me.
01:31:07That's not gonna happen again.
01:31:09I hope they fucking try.
01:31:10Look, man, I'm not talking about your pecker with friends.
01:31:13They're protecting your stupid ass.
01:31:15You dissed them in public.
01:31:17Now you're on your fucking own.
01:31:19Yo, man, I'm talking about the brothers, all right?
01:31:22They're gonna fuck you, toss a salad, then smoke your motherfucking ass.
01:31:25Oh, oh, oh.
01:31:26Why don't you tell me something I don't already know?
01:31:28You think I haven't thought about that?
01:31:30They're gonna come for me.
01:31:31They're gonna come for me.
01:31:32There ain't nothing I can do.
01:31:35What can I do, man?
01:31:36What can I do, man?
01:31:42So I was right back where I started.
01:31:44Every day I was sure it was my dad.
01:31:48Every time I stepped out of my cell.
01:31:50Every time I got in that shower.
01:31:56I figured it was only a matter of time before they made a move.
01:32:02I just hoped it'd be quick.
01:32:06I just hoped it'd be quick.
01:32:36They never came.
01:32:39I couldn't figure it out,
01:32:40because I knew some of them were itching for it.
01:32:42But after a while, I just put my head down
01:32:44and read the stuff that Sweeney sent me,
01:32:46and I kept to myself.
01:32:51The last six months in that place, I was like a ghost.
01:33:07What's up, man? You getting out?
01:33:13Come on, man. What the fuck you waiting on?
01:33:14Get the fuck on out of here, man.
01:33:18Yeah, you know, I got this funny feeling.
01:33:20Oh, yeah? What's that?
01:33:23I'm thinking maybe the only reason I'm getting out of here in one piece is you.
01:33:28Come on, man. Get the fuck out of here, man.
01:33:30You think I'm gonna put my neck on the line for some crazy-ass peck of wood?
01:33:34Yeah, right.
01:33:36Stupid.
01:33:44That's what I thought.
01:33:50I owe you, man.
01:33:52Man, you don't be shit, all right?
01:33:57Yes, I do.
01:34:07You'll be out of here in no time.
01:34:09Come on, man. It's a piece of cake, man, all right?
01:34:13Just take it easy on the brothers, all right?
01:34:15The brothers!
01:34:27Goddamn it.
01:34:31Sorry, Darren.
01:34:33Sorry, man.
01:34:35I'm sorry that happened to you.
01:34:39No, I'm not. I'm lucky.
01:34:42I feel lucky, because it's wrong, Dan.
01:34:47It's wrong, and it was eating me up. It was gonna kill me.
01:34:51And I kept asking myself all the time,
01:34:53how did I buy into this shit, you know?
01:34:59And it's just because I was pissed off.
01:35:01And nothing I ever did ever took that feeling away.
01:35:06I mean, I killed two guys, Danny. I killed them.
01:35:11And it didn't make me feel any different.
01:35:14It just got me more lost, and I'm tired of feeling pissed off, Danny.
01:35:19I'm just tired of it.
01:35:22And I'm not telling you what to do.
01:35:25I'm really not.
01:35:27But I need you to understand.
01:35:31Because I love you, and you're my best friend.
01:35:37Do you understand?
01:35:39Yeah, I understand.
01:35:44All right.
01:35:48Whew!
01:35:50Shit.
01:36:01Shit.
01:36:06Hey.
01:36:08Uh, everything okay?
01:36:10No, everything's great. Great. Yeah.
01:36:13You wanna sleep in our room?
01:36:15Sure.
01:36:20All right, come on. Let's go.
01:36:31Okay.
01:37:01Come on.
01:37:32Come on.
01:37:51You wanna take a shower with me?
01:38:01Sure.
01:38:27It's hard to look back and see the truth about people you love.
01:38:32I think if you asked Eric why it all went the way it did and where it all started,
01:38:36he'd still say it started when our father was murdered.
01:38:40But the truth is, it started earlier.
01:38:43All right. Are we all meeting together for the game tonight?
01:38:46Yes, definitely.
01:38:47All right, Ben's burger is 7 o'clock, then we go watch the big guy play.
01:38:50Okay. Yeah.
01:38:52Second up for the game?
01:38:54Oh, yeah, I'm always ready for that.
01:38:56I got an English exam, third period, and I'm having a heart attack. I'm not ready.
01:38:59What's the matter, Fred? You gonna get a B?
01:39:02Might do you good. B minus.
01:39:05Don't laugh.
01:39:06I'm telling you, this guy is different. Dr. Sweeney, this guy's unbelievable.
01:39:10Unbelievable. I've never had a teacher like this. He's got, like, two PhDs.
01:39:13I don't know what he's doing teaching in our school. He's not like other teachers.
01:39:17What's he got you reading?
01:39:19We got this essay exam on this book, Native Son. All in this one book.
01:39:22Native Son? What's that? I don't know that.
01:39:24Well, that's a big surprise.
01:39:27What? I read?
01:39:29I mean, they don't teach Tom Clancy in school.
01:39:34Well, they don't.
01:39:36So what is it? What is this Native Son? What is it?
01:39:39It's like this book about this black guy, you know? We're doing this whole black literature unit.
01:39:45What is it? Black History Month?
01:39:47No, it's just like this guy Sweeney, you know? It's part of the course now.
01:39:52Yeah.
01:39:56What?
01:39:58Nothing. It's just, you know, it's everywhere I look now.
01:40:03What?
01:40:06This affirmative black action.
01:40:09Honey, a few new books doesn't qualify as affirmative black action.
01:40:14Hey, read the book. Ace the guy's test. Just don't swallow everything he feeds you.
01:40:18You know, just because you see it on the evening news.
01:40:20No, but like what?
01:40:21All this stuff about making everything equal. It's not that simple.
01:40:24Look, now you got this book, Native Son.
01:40:26You know, what happened to the other books in the course?
01:40:28They're not any good anymore because Mr. Two PhD says they aren't?
01:40:33Huh? I mean, you got to trade in great books for black books?
01:40:36Does that make sense? Huh?
01:40:38You got to question these things, Dare.
01:40:40You got to look at the whole picture.
01:40:42You know, we're talking about books here.
01:40:45You know, we're talking about books here.
01:40:47But I'm also talking about my job.
01:40:49I got two black guys on my squad now who got their job over a couple of white guys
01:40:54who actually scored higher in the test.
01:40:57Does that make sense? Huh?
01:40:59Yeah, sure, everything's equal now.
01:41:01But I got two guys watching my back, responsible for my life,
01:41:05who aren't as good as two other guys.
01:41:07You only got the job because they were black.
01:41:09Not because they were the best.
01:41:11That sucks.
01:41:12Yeah, is that what America's about?
01:41:14No, America's about best man for the job.
01:41:16You do your best, you get the job.
01:41:18You know, this affirmative action crap.
01:41:22I don't know what that's about.
01:41:23There's like some hidden agenda or something going on.
01:41:27You see what I'm saying?
01:41:28Yeah, I do.
01:41:29I don't know, I didn't think about it like that.
01:41:32Well, this guy though, I don't know, he comes on like so strong,
01:41:37it's kind of hard not to listen to him, but I don't know,
01:41:40maybe some of what he says is kind of...
01:41:42It's bullshit.
01:41:44Yeah.
01:41:46Yeah, maybe.
01:41:47No, no.
01:41:48It's nigger bullshit.
01:41:53You see that, don't you?
01:41:54Yeah.
01:41:56You gotta watch out for that.
01:41:57Yeah, I know, I get what you're saying, I will.
01:42:02Good boy.
01:42:05Probably.
01:42:06Don't worry about it.

01:44:15I'm gonna watch the sun come up.
01:44:18I don't know if I've ever done that.
01:44:21Anyway, we're gonna try to pick things up and start over.
01:44:25It won't be easy, but we're all together again,
01:44:29and I feel good.
01:44:32I'm not sure if this paper is what you wanted,
01:44:35if I hit the social significance
01:44:37or whatever you're looking for,
01:44:39but for what it's worth, thanks a lot.
01:44:56Wow, you look great.
01:44:59Look at you.
01:45:01Yeah, got to dress up for the parole officer.
01:45:05Is she cute?
01:45:07She is a fat guy named Hector.
01:45:09So I'm out of luck.
01:45:13Well, I just got to check in.
01:45:16Then I'm gonna see about getting my old job back.
01:45:18Great.
01:45:20Good morning.
01:45:21Hey, hey.
01:45:24Your sister's gonna help you out.
01:45:27You look great. Welcome to Hector.
01:45:29Thanks.
01:45:35You do look good.
01:45:37I feel silly.
01:45:39You look good.
01:45:43Feel good?
01:45:47Yeah, yeah, I feel, you know,
01:45:50a little...
01:45:52I'm getting there, I'm getting there.
01:45:56Listen, I don't know...
01:45:59I don't know if it's okay that I'm here.
01:46:06I want to be here.
01:46:20I want to be here.
01:46:27Give me the paper.
01:46:28Cool.
01:46:46What do you want?
01:46:47Maple bar and a large milk.
01:46:49Thank you.
01:46:56Let me get a coffee, maple bar and a large milk to go.
01:47:00Right away.
01:47:09Hey, Derek.
01:47:11Hey.
01:47:12Derek, we need to talk.
01:47:14What's going on?
01:47:16Alexander and Seth Ryan are at the ICU at St. John's.
01:47:19They were jumped last night near Ben's Burgers.
01:47:21How bad?
01:47:22Well, it looks like they're gonna live.
01:47:24And they got lucky.
01:47:26Somebody's gotta lose, though.
01:47:30Now, what?
01:47:32We were kind of hoping that maybe you'd, uh...
01:47:34Well, you talked to your old crew.
01:47:36No, come on.
01:47:37This is not a good thing.
01:47:38Now, if there's anybody they're gonna listen to, it's you.
01:47:40No, no, I hate to tell you, but I'm out, okay?
01:47:43Those guys are probably gunning for me now.
01:47:45Look, we're asking for your help here, Derek.
01:47:47What, did you tell them I was gonna do this?
01:47:49Yeah.
01:47:55Come on.
01:47:56This has got nothing to do with me anymore.
01:47:58Yes, it does.
01:47:59It has everything to do with you.
01:48:00Come on.
01:48:01What are you doing to me?
01:48:02I mean, what are you...
01:48:03You know, I'm doing my best.
01:48:04I know.
01:48:05I'm going like this just to keep my family in the clear.
01:48:06I know.
01:48:07Don't ask me to fix this whole fucking situation.
01:48:08I'm not asking that.
01:48:09It was there before me.
01:48:10You help create it?
01:48:11You wanna take a break now?
01:48:13If you take a break, you'll find no peace.
01:48:15The way to find peace is to stick.
01:48:19It's not gonna make a fucking bit of difference.
01:48:20It might.
01:48:21Not a bit.
01:48:22It might.
01:48:24Do you know what you're asking me to do?
01:48:26Do you really know?
01:48:27Yes.
01:48:28I'm asking you to do whatever's in your power to do.
01:48:31Oh, man.
01:48:42All right.
01:48:46You know what you're gonna do?
01:48:47You're gonna get me shot by a bunch of white boys.
01:48:48All right, Dad.
01:48:49Yeah.
01:48:51We're all gonna have a laugh at that when you pay.
01:48:54All right, I'm gonna take him to school.
01:48:56I'll be back in a half an hour.
01:48:58Come on.
01:48:59Hey, you...
01:49:01You got something good for me this morning?
01:49:03I'll give it to you, Dr. Smith.
01:49:04Yeah, okay.
01:49:05All right.
01:49:30This is so bad for Seth, man.
01:49:33I wonder how bad they got fucked up.
01:49:35I don't know.
01:49:37I'm glad they're not dead, but other than that, I don't care.
01:49:41Should we visit him?
01:49:42Visit him? No.
01:49:43No, definitely not.
01:49:44Definitely not.
01:49:45Just stay out of it.
01:49:47Listen, too.
01:49:49I saw a car cruising by the house last night
01:49:51when I pulled out of there with Seth.
01:49:53If you get home before me, I'll call you.
01:49:55Okay?
01:49:56When I pulled out of there with Seth.
01:49:58If you get home before me today,
01:49:59just give a look around the street, all right?
01:50:01Make sure there's nothing going on.
01:50:04Oh, man.
01:50:05This is bad.
01:50:09They're after you, man.
01:50:10It'll cool off.
01:50:12If I made it through Chino,
01:50:13you know, this would be a piece of cake, right?
01:50:17You gonna be okay?
01:50:19Yeah, yeah.
01:50:22Okay.
01:50:24What are you gonna do?
01:50:25I don't know.
