00:24:00 He doesn't.
00:24:01 Doctors feel that you've created
00:24:03 this character out of necessity.
00:24:05 You never stick up for yourself.
00:24:07 Charlie, why didn't you take a vacation when Layla left?
00:24:12 Why-- why would I?
00:24:19 You know, I-- wives leave their husbands
00:24:22 every day in this country.
00:24:23 There's no reason to shortchange the department.
00:24:25 I mean, it's not like I had the flu.
00:24:28 Have you picked up your medication, Charlie?
00:24:40 I'm really not crazy about it, though.
00:24:48 It only makes me so dry.
00:24:50 You have to take it anyway.
00:24:51 Dr. Rabinowitz assures us that if you do,
00:24:54 everything will be fine.
00:24:55 This is a bunch of crap!
00:24:57 No wonder you're the smallest state.
00:24:59 Little mind, little state.
00:25:00 Shouldn't even be a state.
00:25:02 It should be the District of Rhode Island.
00:25:04 Can you take these goddamn things off, please?
00:25:07 And could you stop looking at my ass?
00:25:11 Richard, what-- what's going on out here?
00:25:13 Well, uh, Colonel, her name's Waters, Irene P.
00:25:16 I pulled her over in '95 for a broken taillight.
00:25:19 I ran a check.
00:25:21 She's got an outstanding warrant in upstate New York.
00:25:24 Hit and run?
00:25:25 Hit and run.
00:25:26 Injured pedestrian.
00:25:27 Signed the complaint.
00:25:28 Oh, well, I think I might remember that.
00:25:31 That is ridiculous.
00:25:32 I've never been in an accident, not in my whole life.
00:25:35 Well, I've just gotten off the phone
00:25:37 with the New York State Patrol.
00:25:39 They don't seem to think it's so ridiculous.
00:25:43 Uh, how can we--
00:25:45 Were you in Messina, New York, last Friday, 2nd of May?
00:25:48 Well, yeah, I lived there.
00:25:50 But I didn't have any accident.
00:25:53 Look, I'm just driving down to Block Island to see my sister.
00:25:56 You seem like a nice guy.
00:25:58 Is there any way that you might let me handle this by mail, or--
00:26:01 Unfortunately, Miss Waters, I'm not the one you have to convince.
00:26:05 If there's been a mistake, you have to clear it up in Messina.
00:26:09 What?
00:26:10 Okay, wait.
00:26:11 Because of somebody else's mistake,
00:26:13 I have to get in my car and drive all the way back
00:26:15 to upstate New York?
00:26:18 No, ma'am.
00:26:28 We'll have one of our troopers escort you.
00:26:33 [phone ringing]
00:26:38 Hey, Hollywood, turn your fucking phone off.
00:26:40 Yeah.
00:26:41 You're an asshole.
00:26:42 Oh, hello, Irene. What do I do now?
00:26:44 Listen, I'm sitting at a police station somewhere in Rhode Island,
00:26:47 and they're shipping me back to Messina on some bogus crap.
00:26:50 Sound familiar?
00:26:51 Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down.
00:26:52 I don't have a clue what you're talking about.
00:26:54 Dickie!
00:26:55 Cut the bullshit!
00:26:57 Listen to me, okay?
00:27:02 It's over, Dickie. It's over.
00:27:05 So please just stop messing with me
00:27:08 and call your friends and tell them to back off, okay?
00:27:11 Look, I'm being a straight shooter here.
00:27:13 If you need help, I'll help you.
00:27:15 Just give me all the details, and I'll get to the bottom of it.
00:27:18 All right?
00:27:19 Messina, New York?
00:27:22 Man, goddamn, Daddy, that's damn near Canada.
00:27:24 I know, I know. It wasn't my idea.
00:27:27 I gotta go take this gal up north,
00:27:29 and then the colonel ordered me to take a week's vacation.
00:27:32 Why a week? Man, that's a long motherfucking time.
00:27:34 Well, he wants me to rest while I'm getting used to the medication.
00:27:38 Oh, come on. You don't have to worry about us, Daddy.
00:27:41 We're grown up now.
00:27:42 These two motherfuckers can do the shopping, I'll do the cooking.
00:27:45 You do the cooking?
00:27:46 You're the one who thought you got chipped beef from a toofie blowjob.
00:27:49 You had Chante Junior down or under, goddamn 400 pounds.
00:27:52 Fuck that.
00:27:53 You can't have that, Evan.
00:27:55 Okay, guys.
00:27:56 I'm not leaving till the morning, but you know the rules when I go.
00:28:00 No bitches after 11.
00:28:02 All right, Pop.
00:28:05 All right, bye, Daddy.
00:28:07 Love you, Daddy.
00:28:11 Who the hell's this Irene, honey, anyway?
00:28:14 She worked for me the past couple of years.
00:28:17 I hired her to be my golf course superintendent.
00:28:20 We got close.
00:28:21 No, you got stupid.
00:28:23 For the love of shit, these are the loose ends that can hang you, Dickie.
00:28:28 And me, too.
00:28:30 How much does she know?
00:28:32 She might have gotten wind of some things.
00:28:35 Yeah, well, we're gonna find out.
00:28:37 The complaint was signed by a guy named Peterson.
00:28:40 He's with the EPA.
00:28:42 EPA?
00:28:43 I thought they were in our pocket.
00:28:45 Well, not all of them.
00:28:47 Well, even though Charlie didn't wholeheartedly agree with the top brass,
00:28:52 he did as he was told.
00:28:54 Careful on the road, Charlie.
00:28:56 Okay, Colonel.
00:28:58 Hang on, ma'am.
00:29:04 Yep.
00:29:06 [ engine starts ]
00:29:08 This vacation is just what Charlie needs.
00:29:16 I bet he's a new man when he gets back.
00:29:19 If we let him back.
00:29:22 What do you mean?
00:29:26 Well, I mean that he's become a pretty big liability.
00:29:29 We have to let him go.
00:29:33 Let him go? But-- but, Captain, police work is Charlie's home.
00:29:36 I know, I know. Damn.
00:29:38 I know.
00:29:41 It's a great time of year to ride.
00:29:49 As long as you don't mind one or two bugs.
00:29:53 [ music ]
00:29:56 [ music ]
00:29:58 [ music ]
00:30:01 [ music ]
00:30:03 [ music ]
00:30:13 [ music ]
00:30:22 [ music ]
00:30:24 Oh, you can't beat the open road.
00:30:51 Oh, my goodness.
00:30:53 Jeez.
00:30:55 Those damn truckers.
00:30:58 You know, you'd think they'd call someone to come clean this up.
00:31:01 Poor thing.
00:31:05 Well, that's terrible.
00:31:07 Whoa.
00:31:09 By the looks of her, she's been here for a while.
00:31:12 Well, I doubt we're gonna be able to move her, but we should try.
00:31:16 You wanna get that end? Just give it a little push?
00:31:18 Really? Yeah. Yeah, we should give it a shot.
00:31:21 Okay? Okay.
00:31:23 Go ahead.
00:31:25 Just push as hard as you can. Yeah, okay.
00:31:28 [ grunts ]
00:31:29 Oh! Jeez! Whoa!
00:31:31 Okay, you just-- Oh, it's still alive.
00:31:34 Just stand back. I'll take care of it.
00:31:36 I'll take care of it. God, that's terrible.
00:31:38 Oh.
00:31:40 Now, don't-- don't look, okay? Yeah.
00:31:43 [ sighs ]
00:31:45 Well, old girl...
00:31:50 Your suffering's over.
00:31:53 [ gunshot ]
00:31:59 Oh, it ain't always easy doing Mother Nature's work.
00:32:05 [ grunts ]
00:32:06 [ cow moos ]
00:32:07 Oh, jeez!
00:32:08 [ gunshots ]
00:32:11 [ sighs ]
00:32:13 Oh.
00:32:18 Do you believe that?
00:32:19 No, it's-- Ugh.
00:32:21 [ cow moos ]
00:32:22 Oh, my God in heaven!
00:32:24 [ gunshots ]
00:32:26 [ cow moos ]
00:32:27 [ grunts ]
00:32:29 Tell me what's wrong with you!
00:32:31 [ grunts ]
00:32:33 Let go! Let go, girl!
00:32:36 Undecreed of pastors. Come on.
00:32:38 We're clear-cutting a place in heaven for you.
00:32:41 Come on, help me out!
00:32:43 Do something!
00:32:45 I don't--
00:32:46 Let go!
00:32:48 [ cow moos ]
00:32:49 Let go!
00:32:51 Go!
00:32:52 [ cow moos ]
00:32:53 [ panting ]
00:32:55 [ groans ]
00:32:59 Well...
00:33:04 That was tough, but...
00:33:07 I think we did the right thing.
00:33:09 [ sighs ]
00:33:11 Patrol car, yes.
00:33:23 Okay, thank you.
00:33:25 Can I help you?
00:33:27 Yes, I'm officer Bailey Gates, Rhode Island State Police.
00:33:30 I have, uh, your prisoner, Miss Irene Waters, here.
00:33:33 All right. I'll tell them you're here.
00:33:36 Okay-dee-ray-dee.
00:33:38 What are those for?
00:33:51 Huh?
00:33:52 Oh, it's just this stupid thing.
00:33:55 I have to take a pill every six hours, or I feel... funny.
00:33:59 No big deal.
00:34:01 What's it called?
00:34:03 Advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage.
00:34:07 Huh.
00:34:12 Does your ass feel numb?
00:34:17 No, but...
00:34:20 it gave me unbelievable cotton mouth.
00:34:23 I meant from the ride.
00:34:25 Oh.
00:34:27 Over the years, my ass has taken a pounding.
00:34:31 Miss Waters, my name's Peterson.
00:34:33 This is my partner, Agent Beauchesne.
00:34:35 We're with the Environmental Protection Agency's Special Investigations.
00:34:39 The EPA?
00:34:41 What'd I hit? Bald-headed eagle?
00:34:44 We'll explain that to you, ma'am,
00:34:46 but right now we're gonna ask you to come along with us.
00:34:49 Well, why don't you just explain it to me now?
00:34:54 Well, ma'am, uh, we put your hit-and-run report out on the wire
00:34:58 in order to track you down.
00:35:01 Track me down for what?
00:35:03 Agent Beauchesne...
00:35:05 I want to remind you again, our station's at your disposal.
00:35:11 You're more than welcome to use any of our interrogation rooms.
00:35:14 We appreciate it, Lieutenant Geraghi, but we're all set.
00:35:17 All right, well, if there's anything at all, I...
00:35:22 (SLURPS)
00:35:24 Ah. Excuse me.
00:35:37 I just gonna...
00:35:39 get me a drink.
00:35:49 Ah. So, if I could, uh...
00:35:52 just get someone to sign this, I'll be on my way.
00:35:55 Yeah.
00:35:57 Well, Miss Watterson, good luck.
00:36:01 And, uh, hope everything works out great for you.
00:36:03 Thanks a lot, Charlie.
00:36:05 I haven't done anything wrong, and you know it.
00:36:10 What about the marijuana roaches you left behind
00:36:14 when you moved out of your apartment?
00:36:16 So I smoked some pot. What is that, a crime?
00:36:19 Uh-huh.
00:36:22 As is being an accessory to bribery, embezzlement,
00:36:25 tax evasion and racketeering.
00:36:27 What are you talking about?
00:36:29 Does the name Dickie Thurman ring a bell?
00:36:31 His company, Cedar Creek Limited,
00:36:35 has been under seal grand jury investigation for 18 months.
00:36:38 So how does that make me an accessory?
00:36:40 I laid some sod on Dickie's golf course, so what?
00:36:42 Tell me this. A big operation like the Cedar Creek Country Club,
00:36:45 how'd you get the job as the head greenskeeper?
00:36:49 By default.
00:36:51 This guy, um, Tedeschi or Tedesco,
00:36:54 he was hired before me, but he died.
00:36:56 Heart problem or something.
00:36:58 The feds believe that Irene knew more than she thought she knew,
00:37:04 and her life was in danger.
00:37:06 They explained that everything had been happening right under her nose.
00:37:10 Payoffs of government agencies,
00:37:12 threats towards those who stood in the way,
00:37:14 and her predecessor's heart attack.
00:37:17 Well, that was just cold-blooded murder.
00:37:21 Oh, man.
00:37:23 Can you excuse me?
00:37:33 Sure.
00:37:35 Piece of kit.
00:37:54 How much?
00:37:59 Uh, that comes to $13.95.
00:38:01 ( grunts )
00:38:03 You son of a bitch!
00:38:28 ( music playing )
00:38:30 Well, it was a good thing Charlie had told her
00:38:47 he was staying at the Chuck E. Cheese Lodge and miniature golf resort.
00:38:51 Charlie.
00:38:53 Irene finagled a key from the front desk and let herself in.
00:38:58 Charlie.
00:39:00 Charlie, what's going on here?
00:39:12 Oh, Irene.
00:39:14 Oh, oh, um, uh, Irene,
00:39:18 I was just, um, I was gonna, um, study your file
00:39:22 and try to find a loophole.
00:39:24 Did your lips get as chapped as mine on the ride down?
00:39:29 Never mind! I need your help.
00:39:31 There was a shootout down at the thing, and the agents are dead.
00:39:35 Dead?
00:39:37 Yeah, they were after me, Charlie.
00:39:39 Oh, God, see, this is Dickie's work. I know it.
00:39:42 So what are you gonna do?
00:39:47 We'll call the police.
00:39:50 What? No, you can't do that.
00:39:52 Dickie has those guys in his back pocket. That's why I came to you.
00:39:55 - What do you mean? - Oh!
00:39:57 Hey, this is serious shit.
00:39:59 You don't--
00:40:01 I'm outta here.
00:40:03 Hey, wait! No, don't do that. Come on.
00:40:05 Hold on. Just let me think for a second, okay?
00:40:07 You don't have to think, simply.
00:40:09 Just ask Charlie. This is the first place they're gonna look.
00:40:11 Damn it!
00:40:14 [car door slams]
00:40:16 So where are we going, anyway?
00:40:23 You'll see.
00:40:25 Well, they went on the lam for a bit,
00:40:29 and then Charlie made a couple of phone calls.
00:40:32 [dog barking]
00:40:35 [car engine revving]
00:40:37 Take it easy, now.
00:40:44 Don't worry. I'll take care of it.
00:40:47 Hey.
00:40:49 - Good work, Bailey Gates. - Thanks.
00:40:51 I'm sorry I had to meet you all the way out here.
00:40:53 No, that's okay. Just as well.
00:40:55 Poor gal's a little paranoid. My kids are like that.
00:40:58 Somewhere along the line, they just get this idea
00:41:00 that the cops are the bad guys, and--
00:41:02 [grunting]
00:41:04 Listen, I don't know what's going on,
00:41:11 and I didn't tell the feds anything.
00:41:13 Dickie told me you were street smart. Huh?
00:41:16 Why the hell would you run back to this idiot?
00:41:19 Drop the gun, moron.
00:41:26 You're being videotaped.
00:41:30 What are you talking about?
00:41:32 There's a camera on my bike.
00:41:34 - Hey! - [gasps]
00:41:37 Hard to hit a moving target, isn't it?
00:41:40 [both grunting]
00:41:45 Score.
00:41:58 Good move. Get in the car.
00:42:01 Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:42:05 Would you mind telling me what the hell you were thinking back there?
00:42:12 Calling that cop was unbelievably stupid.
00:42:15 Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:42:17 Tweak the high end in your emotional EQ, sweetpeak.
00:42:20 The funky chicken was Charlie's dance.
00:42:23 I'm a tango man myself.
00:42:26 [upbeat music]
00:42:28 As you can imagine, there was some explaining to do.
00:42:35 So Hank, as he called himself,
00:42:39 found a quiet spot and spelled out the whole darn mess.
00:42:43 Okay, so what you're saying is that you're not Charlie.
00:42:47 Come on, you've seen Charlie in action.
00:42:49 The guy's like origami. He folds under pressure.
00:42:51 When the big game's on the line, he's busy riding the pine.
00:42:55 Okay, wait, wait, can you just--
00:42:57 [sighs]
00:43:02 It's simple.
00:43:04 Charlie's a mouse that got you into the maze.
00:43:07 I'm the rat who knows how to find the cheese.
00:43:10 Name's Hank. Hank Evans.
00:43:13 Four little girls.
00:43:16 So it's true. Charlie is a schizo.
00:43:20 I wouldn't know. I stay out of his business, he stays out of mine.
00:43:23 Look.
00:43:26 Just because I rock doesn't mean I'm made of stone.
00:43:32 I feel your fear.
00:43:35 It's coming through like static on my heart radio.
00:43:38 Hank?
00:43:41 Hank.
00:43:43 I really, really appreciate your help,
00:43:46 but is there any way that maybe we could get Charlie back out here
00:43:50 for a little huddle?
00:43:53 No problem.
00:43:55 While you're at it, why don't you climb that pole over there
00:43:58 and take a big steamy piss on the power lines?
00:44:00 Look, I'm not here to twist your niblets.
00:44:02 I'm here to save your life.
00:44:04 But if I'm gonna do that, I'll need total unanimity.
00:44:07 Okay.
00:44:14 Sound good, candy pants?
00:44:17 Hank, don't call me that.
00:44:20 Man, how the hell can they call Pluto a planet?
00:44:34 What motherfucking planet has an elliptical orbit?
00:44:36 Man, this shit don't make no sense.
00:44:38 Motherfucker!
00:44:40 That motherfucker Vince Foster was murdered.
00:44:42 I told you that shit!
00:44:44 Man, look, will you quit hacking into them goddamn Pentagon files, man?
00:44:47 Ain't no Nevermind with them crooked politicians be killing.
00:44:50 You need to do your goddamn studying.
00:44:52 Man, what did Dyer tell you about Schnuga, huh?
00:44:54 Shit, yeah, man, look, man, you keep fucking around,
00:44:56 you're gonna get that scholarship to Yale taken away from you.
00:44:58 Be stuck up there at Stanford, man,
00:45:00 with them goddamn slang blade motherfuckers.
00:45:02 [laughing]
00:45:04 Shit, motherfucker, you'd be lucky to get accepted to Duke
00:45:06 getting a 1430 on your SAT.
00:45:08 Motherfucker, you know I had the flu.
00:45:10 The flu, my ass!
00:45:12 1430!
00:45:14 Man, you're talking some shit now.
00:45:16 Now, you see, man, that's probably one of them Ivy League song bitches right now.
00:45:19 Shut your big-ass head up and get to the door, man.
00:45:21 Don't fuck with me.
00:45:23 Get out of the way, boy, get some of this shit.
00:45:25 Hey, Captain.
00:45:27 Fellas.
00:45:29 The fuck is going on, man?
00:45:31 This is Agent Anaselli.
00:45:33 Gentlemen.
00:45:35 What's happening, Captain?
00:45:37 You've got a problem. Pack your bags.
00:45:39 [door closes]
00:45:41 We're locked and loaded.
00:45:47 Got enough stuff to hold us over for 72 hours.
00:45:49 [laughing]
