00:35second in 1928. The story of the novel is set in Los Angeles, California. It is a very
00:46complex story with various characters who continue to double-cross one another. Throughout
00:54the narrative, various secrets continue to be revealed. The title, The Big Sleep, is
01:02a euphemism of that title. It evidently refers to rumination in the book about sleeping,
01:11The Big Sleep. The Big Sleep made it to the list of Le Mans 100 Books of the Century in
01:21the year 1999. In the year 2005, The Big Sleep made it to the Times list of the 100 best
01:33novels. Plot Summary. It is the month of October. Philip Marlowe happens to be a private investigator.
01:49He is called to the house of General Sternwood, an elderly wealthy man. Sternwood informs
01:58Detective Marlowe that a bookseller named Arthur Gager has made an attempt to blackmail
02:08his wild young daughter Carmen. He also informs the detective that Carmen had earlier been
02:17blackmailed by a person named Joe Brody. He then tells Marlowe about his other older daughter
02:27Vivian, who is married to a man named Rusty Redding, but her married life is loveless.
02:37He tells the detective that Vivian's husband, Rusty Redding, has disappeared. While Marlowe
02:46happens to be going about, Vivian begins to think whether Marlowe has been hired to find
02:53Redding, but Marlowe does not tell her anything. Having left the house of Sternwood, Marlowe
03:03goes to investigate Gager's bookstore. He meets Agnes the clerk. The investigator concludes
03:12that the store is a pornography lending library. Marlowe follows Gager to his home. Standing
03:22outside his house, he sees Carmen Sternwood enter the house. After a while, there occurs
03:30a scream followed by gunshots and the sound of two cars speeding away. Marlowe rushes
03:39into the house and finds Gager dead and Carmen drugged. She is netted in front of an empty
03:48camera. He puts clothes on her and takes her phone. When he comes back to Gager's house,
03:57his daughter Dottie is not found there. He leaves the house hurriedly. The following
04:04morning, he is summoned by the police. They inform him that the Sternwood car was found
04:12driven off a pier with their chauffeur dead inside the car. Looking at the scene of the
04:19accident, it seems that the chauffeur was hit before the car entered the water. The
04:28police ask Marlowe if he is looking for Reagan. Marlowe comes to the bookstore and keeps his
04:36eyes on the store. He finds that the inventory is being moved to Joe Brody's home. Vivian
04:45comes to meet Marlowe and she informs him that Carmen is now being blackmailed with
04:51the nude photos from the night before. She also says that she had gone gambling at the
04:59casino of Eddie Marlowe. And then at that, Eddie's wife Mona ran off with Rusty. Marlowe
05:13goes back to Gager's house and finds that Carmen is trying to get into the house. They
05:20try to find the photos there, but she says that she does not know anything about the
05:26night before. Suddenly Eddie Marlowe enters and he informs them that he is Gager's landlord.
05:35He is looking for Gager. Marlowe wants to know why Marlowe is there, but Marlowe tells
05:41him that Mark should not be afraid of him. After that Marlowe visits Brody's house and
05:50he finds Brody with Agnes, the clerk from the bookstore. Marlowe tells them that he
05:57already knows that they are taking over the lending library and they are trying to blackmail
06:03Carmen with the nude photos. Suddenly Carmen forces her way into the room. She has a gun
06:10in her hand. She demands her photos, but Marlowe calms her down and takes her gun. He makes
06:18her leave. Marlowe asks Brody a few questions and then pieces together the full story. It
06:27transpires that Gager was blackmailing Carmen, but the family driver did not like it. So
06:34the driver sneaked in and killed Gager and took the film of Carmen. Brody followed the
06:41driver and stole the film and then hit him and possibly pushed the car off the pier.
06:48Suddenly there is a sound of the doorbell. Brody is shocked at it. Marlowe chases the
06:55doorbell and catches Gager's male lover. He had shot Brody thinking that Brody had
07:03killed Gager. It transpires that Gager's male lover had hidden Gager's body to remove
07:11his own belonging, to remove any suspicion coming his way. Although the case is over,
07:18Marlowe is still perplexed because of Regan's disappearance. According to the police version,
07:27Regan simply disappeared with Mona Marle. She is also missing and Eddie Marle would
07:34not risk committing a murder there. He would be the obvious suspect. Marle contacted Marlowe
07:42and he calls him to his casino. Marle seems to be nonchalant about everything. Vivian
07:49also happens to be present in the casino. Marlowe guesses that there is something between
07:54Vivian and Marle. Marlowe drives Vivian home and there she tries to seduce him, but he
08:03does not accept the invitation and stops her at one of his. Having reached home, Marlowe
08:10finds Carmen has already sneaked into his bed. He rejects her too. Harry Jones happens
08:18to be Agnes's new partner. Harry Jones wants to meet Marlowe and offers to sell him the
08:26location of Mona Marle. Marlowe tells him that he will meet him later.
08:35Can you know is Marlowe's deadly henchman. He suspects Jones and Agnes's intentions and
08:42he kills Jones first. Finally, Marlowe meets Agnes and receives the information. He goes
08:50to the location in reality. It is a repair shop with a home in the back. The henchman
08:57can you know an out-huck, a garage man attacks him and knocks him out. When Marlowe opens
09:06his eyes, he finds that he is tied up and Mona Marle is also there with him. Mona informs
09:13Marlowe that she has not seen Rusty in months. She says that she has hidden out to help Eddie.
09:23She insists that Eddie did not kill Rusty. Mona frees Marlowe and he shoots and kills
09:30Kennedy. The following morning, Marlowe meets General Starnwood. General wants to know about
09:37Rusty's whereabouts. While coming out, Marlowe gives her gun back to Carmen. She wants to
09:47learn how to shoot. Marlowe and Carmen go to a vacant field. She tries to kill him but
09:54he has loaded the gun with blank cartridges. Marlowe brings Carmen back to her house and
10:02then he informs Vivian that he has just the truth. He tells her that Carmen went to Rusty
10:09and he refused her so she killed him. Eddie Mars had been backing Giger. He helped Vivian
10:18conceal it by inventing a story about his wife running off with Rusty. After that he
10:25started blackmailing her himself. Vivian confesses that she did it to save her father. She promises
10:34to Marlowe that she will have Carmen institutionalized.
