00:00Hello everybody, and welcome to another episode of War Thunder.
00:03As you can see, I'm showing some footage of the recent floats event.
00:09Basically, it's an event where, well, as the name says, only float planes are really allowed.
00:16For example, the PBY... well, two on each side.
00:20The PBY-5A Catalina, the one with the wheels for some reason,
00:26and the O2SU-1 or 3 for the Americans, and the H6K for the Japanese, and the F1FM.
00:36None of the nations actually have any...
00:40I'll just call their names float planes at the moment.
00:42So, yeah, unfortunately only America and Japan.
00:46Like I said, only two on each team, or two aircraft in each lineup, sorry.
00:52It's sort of a mixed battle, so you have American and Japanese on each side.
00:56Now, basically the aim of the game is to land and capture these points
01:03on the aircraft carriers, which you do by landing near the aircraft carriers.
01:09You've got these boats around them, heavy cruisers, that sort of stuff.
01:16They're hostile at first to, I think, everyone.
01:19But once you cap the point, it goes to your team.
01:23So it becomes a friendly cruiser to you, and an enemy one to the enemy.
01:28As you can see, everyone just tends to bomb them, so that never really helps.
01:34I don't think I bombed any myself.
01:36I might have gone to bomb one or two, just to get the points before anyone else bombed them.
01:41If I got around to it, you can see I'm just sort of landing the aircraft, and...
01:44Big explosion to the left as the carrier's taking a direct hit.
01:49Starting to sink, it's in flames.
01:52Cap in C.
01:53But more about the event.
01:56Obviously, you're quite vulnerable when you're trying to land,
01:59because all float planes can carry bombs.
02:02Especially the PBYs and H8Ks.
02:05PBY gets four 1,000-pound bombs.
02:08H8K gets two 800-kilogram bombs.
02:12You can get...
02:13Well, you're just seeing now, I've just been obliterated by an F1M2 on takeoff.
02:20It's a small little plane, but when you're capping, you can't really avoid that sort of death.
02:27I did sort of skip forward a little bit, I think.
02:32Because there was quite a bit of flight over there.
02:38So I'm just sort of diving down to deal with some of the enemies.
02:41It's hard to actually tell when they're landed or not.
02:43So I usually drop the bombs anyway, because they respawn in like 40 seconds.
02:48There's not really any place where I'm going to need them that quick.
02:53KI-10, just for the AI, just randomly popping up.
02:59More about the aircraft themselves.
03:01The O2-SU and the F1FM2 are quite similar aircraft.
03:07Both float planes both have a single caliber machine gun in the front,
03:12small caliber machine gun, and both have a rear gunner.
03:16Again, pretty low caliber machine gun.
03:21PBYs, they don't have particularly good guns, but they have lots of bombs and quite good armor.
03:27And you've got the H8K, reasonably good bombs, but also has a 20mm turret in the back.
03:35Which is quite...
03:37Well, it's not so bad nowadays, but when I first started playing War Thunder,
03:41when it used to be tiers 1 to 20, the H8K was in tier 1 along with the bioplanes.
03:48So, along with the PBY.
03:50So, for all you people complaining about bomber spam today,
03:54remember us who first started the game and had to deal with bomber rushes and bomber spam in tier 1,
04:03and could only stop it with bioplanes?
04:05I mean, you know, now you can stop them with jets and cannon armed aircraft.
04:11Try stopping 10 PBYs or H8Ks,
04:17or H6Ks, sorry, with one or two 7.7mm caliber machine guns.
04:26On, you know, a tiny reserve map.
04:30Well, you can see I've been bad up quite badly.
04:33I've been chased by an F1M2.
04:37Sort of turning around to deal with the PBY.
04:42And completely obliterated by a H6K.
04:47Which you can see, you know, the bombs are pretty powerful.
04:51Well, the first one didn't do anything, the second one just obliterated the target.
04:57In my second game, which I'll probably be showing in a minute,
04:59well, it was actually my first game, but because of the way it started,
05:02I forgot to record, so I was halfway in the battle already.
05:05I thought it'd look a bit confusing if I just started halfway through
05:08at the beginning of the video,
05:09but the next part I do use it as a gunship sort of thing.
05:15I managed to get a hit with my bomb, I think.
05:19Not much of a hit.
05:21As you can see, floats definitely doesn't play like any other arcade match.
05:26I mean, like I said a minute ago, using the H6K as a gunship is usually frowned upon,
05:31but in floats there isn't really much else you can do.
05:35You can try and cap things, but with the amount of bomb-laden aircraft
05:40and, you know, all kinds of aircraft trying to take you down, it's quite hard.
05:46You can see I'm just taxiing around the enemy spawn.
05:49Some parts of the mission actually remind me of an old game I used to play,
05:55Battle Stations Midway, and another game, I'm trying to remember what it was,
06:02Medal of Honor Pacific Rising or something like that,
06:05in the Pearl Harbor mission, so you're just sailing around Pearl Harbor
06:09on both of the games and you've just got these Hulking ships,
06:13you know, huge compared to your own boat or yourself, and you're just
06:16sailing past them.
06:18They're just sinking, blowing up everywhere.
06:21Oh, it's just hectic.
06:23You see there, that guy's basically touching the water and he's trying to take me out.
06:28Managed to get in the air.
06:30Heavily damaged now.
06:32This was actually...
06:34Oh, I've actually run out of fuel.
06:35This was actually recorded yesterday, I think it was yesterday,
06:40depending on when this comes out,
06:42when we had that patch which basically broke all the guns and made everything impossible
06:47to shoot down.
06:49I can tell my elevators broke because I've managed to take off again straight after landing,
06:53and yeah, it lands so hard I break the tail off.
06:59So I'm just sitting there having a leisurely sit down while the plane just glides off somewhere.
07:06Just ready to get out, short swim to shore, and back to the base.
07:11So that was my second match, basically.
07:13Well, yeah, my second match.
07:16This is my first match I actually did.
07:19You can see I've done the H8K, H6K.
07:23Like I said, it would always spawned halfway through.
07:25You may see some of the same people, but he's...
07:30I can't see him.
07:30Yeah, Made in Scotland's in the background.
07:32He was in both the matches.
07:33He was the one who bombed me in my PBY in the next match, the match we've just seen.
07:39So I've just taken out one aircraft,
07:42just using the H8K, H6K as a gunship,
07:46which again is usually frowned upon in most game modes,
07:48but in floats it's pretty acceptable as far as I can tell.
07:52Pretty fun as well, just trying to...
07:55Just pulling up next to PBYs and other H6Ks
07:58and just blasting away with 20mm cannons and 50 caliber machine guns.
08:03It gets very hectic very fast.
08:08The main aim is to obviously try and cap the capture zones,
08:16but obviously once you...
08:19Well, because of all the bombings,
08:20you basically cap the first one or two straight away,
08:24and then you just basically try and stop the other team from capping anything else.
08:29It's not much chance to land once you've got into the aerial combat
08:34and all the bombs are dropping.
08:37So H6K in front of me, drop bombs.
08:40Again, you're getting packed pretty quick
08:43and it's quite hard to tell if the enemy's landing or not.
08:45And you saw in my PBY,
08:47I actually dropped a bomb and managed to get a hit on an aircraft that was airborne,
08:50so not a complete waste of time.
08:54You know, I'd rather drop the bomb and miss than not drop it and turn out.
08:57I could have got a hit.
08:59I managed to critically damage a H6K.
09:02Um, I don't know what that critical damage is,
09:04because usually it pops up critical damage,
09:06like elevators broke or something,
09:08but occasionally you just get critical damage and it doesn't actually say what.
09:13You can also see I've got pilot unconscious.
09:15Um, it was actually updated a while ago.
09:17Some aircraft get, um, two pilots.
09:20Um, well, because basically what was happening,
09:23you had the B-17 with your pilot and your co-pilot.
09:26The pilot would be killed and the co-pilot would just sit there
09:29while the plane plummeted to the ground.
09:30And, um, basically you wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
09:35So it was changed a little while ago, so the co-pilot can take over.
09:39It is rare to kill the pilot and not kill the, um, co-pilot,
09:43but it can happen that aircraft destroyed.
09:48So that's a H6K down.
09:50Probably the one I killed the pilot on earlier.
09:52I think my bomb damaged another aircraft.
09:56We're doing quite well.
09:56I think we may have won both matches.
09:58I can't quite remember.
10:00Um, I think we definitely won this one.
10:03I mean, we've got all three captains.
10:05The red bar at the top is already halfway down.
10:07So, yeah, we did quite well in this, in these matches.
10:12Just zooming around trying to blow up all the enemies.
10:16Can't, can't remember if I got shot down in this match or in the end.
10:18Um, I think I did right, right near the end of the match.
10:23Um, but like I said, um, this was when the patch that, um,
10:27basically broke all the cannons and machine guns was around.
10:30So obviously, if I tried to do the same today,
10:34probably go very different to this.
10:37Um, for those of you who don't know, basically, um,
10:40there was a patch brought out and, um, it did fix a lot of things.
10:43Like the ER-2 can now take off without bomb load and, um,
10:46with the max bomb load, sorry.
10:48Uh, planes got, um, flight model fixes.
10:51Um, you can knock down trees and ground forces, but, um,
10:54in the attempt to, in the attempt to fix the, uh, I forget the name,
10:59the bomber spam, um, basically 20mm cannons and stuff
11:02weren't doing enough damage to bombers.
11:04The damage models were a bit mucked up and they tried to fix it
11:08and instead made all cannons basically useless.
11:11So trying to shoot with cannons yesterday was just, uh,
11:16it would be like hit and then 10 sparkles,
11:18a hit, then another 10 sparkles,
11:20and eventually you'd get a kill.
11:21Um, yeah, things were very difficult yesterday.
11:25Um, but it did make for fun floats,
11:27because usually it'd be obliterated quite quickly,
11:30but instead managed to do very well.
11:34Um, I believe that has been fixed today.
11:36Mostly the problems with the patch, which is good.
11:38Um, so like I said, would definitely have a different result
11:42if I tried this again today.
11:45Um, you can see I've lost my elevators.
11:47I think I got quite close to crashing at near this point.
11:50I can't remember if I actually did.
11:53Just flying over B trying to not crash.
11:56Um, hang pretty close to some mountains around here, I believe.
12:00We're still winning.
12:01The enemy team are trying to cap, but they're just not going to do it.
12:05I mean, they might cap one if they're lucky,
12:07but it's basically game over for them now.
12:10It's just flying around trying to get as many kills.
12:13Um, the event does give you 20% extra silver lines and RP.
12:17Um, so if you're watching this and you want to get some RP for these aircraft,
12:21um, or silver lines,
12:23then, you know, you can have fun and earn while doing it.
12:27Earn some extra points.
12:29I would definitely recommend this event to anyone.
12:31Um, definitely one of the funner events out there.
12:36Just sort of, just missing some of the trees.
12:40Sort of heading back towards B.
12:42Um, the enemy have almost capped,
12:44or they've managed to take C from us, but again, not going to save them.
12:49H6K, at this point I was checking out the battle ratings,
12:52because, um, I can't remember what, um, made me do this,
12:56but, um, turns out the Japanese actually have a slightly higher battle rating than the Americans.
13:00The, um, I think it's the H6K is, um, higher battle rating than the PBY,
13:05higher battle rating than the PBY, which, um,
13:09so, I don't know, the PBY has better defensive armament,
13:12but the PBY has much better bombs.
13:15I think it's something like four 1,000 pound bombs,
13:18which is pretty, you know, big.
13:21So, um, I don't know what made me check,
13:23but, you know, I was a bit surprised at that.
13:25It's only a tiny difference, but still,
13:27I would have thought the PBY would be quite a bit higher.
13:31I think at this point I knew I wasn't going to make it.
13:34Um, but we sort of, somewhat landed, um,
13:39yeah, we lost the town,
13:40and yeah, everything went very bumpy for the next few minutes,
13:43but, um, for a few seconds,
13:45but we managed to land it,
13:48just sort of turning ourselves into a mobile gun platform.
13:51I think that was my intention in the first place,
13:53um, could be wrong,
13:54or it might have just been I went out of control finally.
13:57I did pick an F1M2, but it was basically the end of the match.
14:01So, yeah, that was basically my day on floats,
14:05or my matches on floats.
14:06Um, wanted to put something out,
14:08because I haven't done War Thunder in a while.
14:09I'm doing some guides for War Thunder,
14:12um, a guide on how to get RP more effectively.
14:16Uh, probably going to do something on patch 1.43 when it comes out.
