00:00Okay, who's this guy? What's your name, big fella?
00:03Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at questions
00:06from the Inside Out franchise that eventually got answered.
00:10Naturally, there will be a few spoilers.
00:12Did you guys pick up on that? Uh-huh.
00:14Sure did. Something's wrong.
00:15Should we ask her? Let's probe, but keep it subtle.
00:19Number 10. Are there other areas of Riley's mind?
00:23The first film took us on an internal odyssey,
00:26from the razzle-dazzle of Dream Productions
00:28to the fathoms of the memory dump.
00:30While Joy and Sadness covered a lot of ground,
00:32they only scratched the surface.
00:34Wait, Joy, you could get lost in there.
00:37Think positive.
00:38Okay, I'm positive you will get lost in there.
00:42That's long-term memory.
00:44Endless warren of corridors and shelves.
00:47I read about it in the manuals.
00:48Much like a city, Riley's mind is constantly evolving,
00:52tearing down old structures to make way for new ones.
00:54The most prominent locale introduced in the sequel
00:57is the basement of Headquarters,
00:59where Riley develops her belief system and sense of self.
01:02The emotions are later locked away in the memory vault,
01:05where they encounter Bloofy, Pouchy, and Lance Slashblade.
01:08You are all banished here.
01:10Deemed unfit. Worthless.
01:13Don't you dare say that! You do not deserve to be thrown away!
01:17Other locations echo natural landmarks,
01:19such as the stream of consciousness and the sarcasm.
01:22Imagination Land is limitless, and so is the rest of Riley's mind.
01:27Medals, ribbons, everyone's a winner!
01:31I won first place!
01:32Me too!
01:33Number nine.
01:34Does Riley make new friends in San Francisco?
01:37Inside Out concludes with Riley accepting San Francisco as her new home.
01:41As she plays hockey, Joy mentions that Riley's made new friends,
01:44but we aren't given much insight beyond that.
01:47Inside Out 2 introduces Bree and Grace,
01:49the latter of whom embarrasses herself during a school presentation.
01:52Cool kids must prank at three o'clock.
01:54Did you see that? Look, they're judging us!
01:57Riley can relate to this, helping Grace along with Bree.
02:00Thus begins a beautiful friendship that's jeopardized
02:03when Bree and Grace tell Riley that they're going to a different high school.
02:06Although not the same as moving to another state, it's still a long distance.
02:10But we need new friends, or we'll be totally alone in high school.
02:13Out with the old, in with the new!
02:15Throughout the film, we see Riley struggle to juggle old friendships
02:18while trying to form new ones.
02:20In the end, Riley strikes a balance with her friends and within herself.
02:25Number eight.
02:26Will the personality islands continue to change?
02:29While Inside Out builds to a joyful resolution,
02:32it doesn't revert everything to the status quo.
02:34Riley's personality islands change, while additional ones crop up.
02:38I like Tragic Vampire Romance Island.
02:40Fashion Island? Everyone shut up!
02:43Boy Band Island. Hope that's just a phase.
02:45At the beginning of Inside Out 2,
02:47some islands are still going strong like Goofball Island.
02:50Others have been phased out like Boy Band Island
02:52and Tragic Vampire Romance Island.
02:55We don't see any of the islands crumble in the sequel,
02:57but we learn that they can grow and shrink.
03:00Family Island, for instance, is now overshadowed by Friendship Island.
03:04It's firmly established that the islands will keep developing with Riley,
03:08reflecting her priorities with each passing year.
03:10Hey, weird.
03:12Graham Cracker Castle used to be right here.
03:14I wonder why they moved it.
03:15Well, I would have sworn Sparkle Pony Mountain was right here.
03:19What's going on?
03:20Number seven.
03:21Does Riley see the boy from the first movie again?
03:24At a hockey meet, Riley bumps into a boy later revealed to be named Jordan.
03:28We're given a glimpse into Jordan's inner panic,
03:31although Riley's feelings toward him are left open-ended.
03:35Okay, bye.
03:37Their relationship is further explored in the short, Riley's First Date.
03:40The question mark in that title should be stressed as every character,
03:44especially Riley's parents, tries to decipher if this is indeed a date.
03:49I know what you're doing here, Jordan.
03:50You don't think that I know what you know, but I know, you little punk.
03:52He's not good enough for Riley.
03:54No one is!
03:55Go back to jail!
03:56In any case, Riley's dad does a 180 after finding out Jordan is into ACDC.
04:01While Riley's self-conscious around Jordan,
04:03it's still unclear if she shares the same feelings.
04:06We're given confirmation in Inside Out 2,
04:08with Jordan prominently featured on Mount Crushmore,
04:11although this is his only appearance in the sequel.
04:14Hey, what's she looking at?
04:16Probably your dumb hat.
04:19Number six.
04:20How will puberty impact Riley?
04:22Guys, what's puberty?
04:24I don't know.
04:25It's probably not important.
04:26Unlike Riley's emotions, the audience, or at least the older crowd,
04:30knows what puberty means.
04:31We still weren't entirely sure what the red button on the control panel would do.
04:35As Riley turns 13 in the sequel, we see her go through physical changes.
04:39Riley outgrows her rainbow shirt and gets a pimple,
04:42but this isn't what triggers the puberty alarm.
04:45It sounds off in the middle of the night,
04:47with puberty hitting Riley like a literal wrecking ball.
04:50Okay, let's clear it all out.
04:52It's demo day!
04:55Although this happens in a flash,
04:56puberty isn't an overnight process.
04:59The demolition crew leaves much incomplete,
05:01with the emotions needing to navigate around the mess.
05:04Speaking of emotions, Riley's mind suddenly gets more crowded,
05:08which is what officially commences puberty.
05:10Oh, I'm sorry.
05:12We wanted to make such a good first impression.
05:14What do you mean, we?
05:15Number five.
05:16Can joy express other emotions?
05:19Sadness.
05:21Mom and dad, the team, they came to help because of sadness.
05:30Joy had an emotional breakthrough when she realized the importance of sadness,
05:34igniting the waterworks.
05:35Some felt like this was out of character,
05:37but it demonstrates why joy and sadness are closer than we assume.
05:41Sometimes we feel better after a good cry,
05:43and even when coping with loss,
05:45we can take joy in knowing that something so beautiful can move us to tears.
05:49Crying helps me slow down and obsess over the weight of life's problems.
05:54If joy can experience sadness,
05:56we wondered if she could convey other emotions.
05:59Inside Out 2 finds joy at another low point.
06:02This amounts to an angry outburst and more tears,
06:05earning sympathy from fear, disgust, and even anger.
06:08It goes to show that happiness isn't necessarily being positive all the time.
06:12To be truly joyful, you need to share every feeling.
06:15Sadness, it's up to you.
06:17Me?
06:18Sadness?
06:20I can't, Joy.
06:21Yes, you can. Riley needs you.
06:24Number 4. Do the emotions have complete control over Riley?
06:28Come on, Riley, get it together. Come on, Riley, get it together. I'm not good enough.
06:33It's been argued that since the emotions have so much authority over what Riley does,
06:38she isn't responsible for her own actions.
06:40Although emotions are integral to decision-making,
06:43Inside Out 2 gives Riley more independence.
06:45She really wants to make the varsity team,
06:48to set up herself to make new friends in high school,
06:51and she's putting more and more pressure on herself.
06:54Anxiety attempts to take over headquarters,
06:57which inevitably results in Riley spinning out of control.
07:00Even after Joy calms anxiety down and returns Riley's sense of self,
07:04her panic attack continues.
07:06It dawns on Joy that for Riley to become well-adjusted,
07:09they can't control her sense of self.
07:11Riley needs to develop another sense of self that isn't so black and white.
07:15The emotions will always be there to guide her,
07:17but only Riley can determine who she is, who she wants to be,
07:21and how she views herself.
07:23I'm the worst!
07:26Well, that's a preview of the next 10 years.
07:28Number 3. What's Riley's deep dark secret?
07:32Working on the original Inside Out,
07:34the filmmakers thought about including a vault where Riley stores her secrets.
07:37The idea didn't make the cut, but it was revisited in the next movie.
07:41We are suppressed emotions!
07:45When the emotions are locked in the memory vault,
07:47they encounter Riley's deep dark secret.
07:49Interestingly, this looming figure bears a resemblance to the titular Dark
07:53from Netflix's 2024 release Orion and the Dark,
07:56a character voiced by Paul Walter Hauser,
07:58who also lends his talents to Inside Out 2's embarrassment.
08:02Unlike that more outgoing Netflix character, though,
08:05Dark Secret is not ready to face the outside world,
08:08opting to stay in the vault after assisting in the jailbreak.
08:11Those who remained after the credits were rewarded
08:13with the Dark Secret dropping the bombshell he's been bottling up.
08:16Riley burned a hole in the rug.
08:18While nothing earth-shattering, it is hilariously anticlimactic
08:22and relatable for any kid who ever felt enormous guilt
08:25over something relatively small.
08:27I was the same way, remember?
08:30He's just afraid.
08:33Yeah, I know what it's like to be afraid too.
08:36Number 2. Does Joy remember Bing Bong?
08:39Bing Bong makes the ultimate sacrifice for Riley,
08:42fading into the memory dump.
08:44Riley might not remember her imaginary friend, but does Joy?
08:47One might assume that Joy also forgot about Bing Bong,
08:50as she doesn't mention him in Inside Out 2.
08:52A subtle Easter egg suggests that Bing Bong is still on Joy's mind, however.
08:56I know you.
08:57No, you don't. I get that a lot. I look like a lot of people.
09:01No, no, no, I do. Bing Bong!
09:04As Joy sleeps one night,
09:05a figure resembling the familiar pink pal can be spotted.
09:08According to production designer Jason Deamer,
09:10quote,
09:11everyone wanted to bring back Bing Bong.
09:13These facts and opinions look so similar.
09:16Don't worry about it. Happens all the time.
09:18Rather than undo the character's bittersweet fate,
09:21the crew found a compromise.
09:22Deamer confirmed, quote,
09:24Joy hasn't forgotten Bing Bong,
09:26so Bing Bong is in Joy's cube, done in origami.
09:29Even when they completely forget something,
09:31it may be buried deep inside.
09:34I'm okay now.
09:37Come on, the train station is this way.

09:55Number 1. Are There Other Emotions?
10:05The folks at Pixar are aware that people have more than five emotions.
10:09Inside Out was going to acknowledge this with up to 27 emotions
10:13potentially being in the film.
10:14For the sake of simplicity, the filmmakers narrowed it down to five.
10:18Since Riley was still growing,
10:19it seemed that there might be room for other emotions to enter the equation.
10:23Inside Out 2 delivers on this with the arrival of anxiety,
10:26envy,
10:27embarrassment,
10:28and ennui.
10:29Ennui, it's what you would call the boredom.
10:32Well, come on up here, ennui.
10:36Am I saying it right?
10:37Ennui, no.
10:38Oh, nicknames!
10:39I'm gonna call you weewee.
10:41Nostalgia drops by as well,
10:43although as the other emotions tell her,
10:44she's a few years too early.
10:46This implies that even more emotions are waiting in the wings.
10:49It's also established that grown-ups aren't limited to five emotions,
10:53although some don't pop up as frequently as others.
10:56She's never acted like this before.
10:58What should we do?
10:59We're gonna find out what's happening,
11:00but we'll need support.
11:01What Inside Out questions do you still have?
11:04Let us know in the comments.
11:06You take such good care of Riley.
11:08Thanks, I try.
11:09Okay, let's do a sweep.
