A dad goes the extra mile and dives to catch his pregnant wife's craving - sea urchins.

Ash Davis', 30, favourite food has always been the roe inside a sea urchin but her craving intensified when she fell pregnant.

Her husband Louis is a keen diver and completes the 10 to 12 hour process to find the urchins from the sea floor and prepare it.

The roe - the sex organ of the urchin - has to then be eaten fresh that day.

Louis, a full time time content creator, from Northland, New Zealand, said: "The sea urchin - it's a delicacy.

"We eat the roe - the sex organ.

"That's my wife's favourite food.

"It intensified during the pregnancy.

"It's not a straight forward process to go and get it - you can't just go and get a takeaway.

"It takes 10 to 12 hours to go to the sea and get what she wants.

"She'll eat it the day it comes out of the ocean."

Ash and Louis - who have Anakiwa, three, and Kānoa, one, together - are expecting their third child in the new year.

The couple both grew up fishing and diving for fresh fish in the Pacific ocean and say it has always been a major part of their diet.

Louis said: "We eat as much of our own seafood as we can."

Louis, a keen diver, enjoys going out to find his wife her favourite food.

He said: "It's my hobby.

"I go on the boat with a buddy.

"I have to go to the many spots.

"I have a very thick wet suit and I descend to the sea floor using my breath. I pick and cut them off rocks on the sea floor.

"I take what Ash needs for that day. We never freeze them."

Louis then cracks them open using spoons.

He said: "It's the ugliest thing. I collect all the roe and put it in a jar.

"They all flavour up together.

"It tastes like you ran your tongue along the sea floor. It's salty, very rich and very dominant.

"I would say 99 per cent of people spit it our or vomit.

"It's a unique flavour."

Louis says many people online have been concerned about his wife eating fish while pregnant.

He said: "There is a list of thing people say you can't eat - one of these is fish.

"Our people have eaten fish for years. They are taken by own hands and later eaten.

"For us it is pure and fresh."

Louis says taking the urchin - an evasive species - also helps the marine eco-system.

He said: "The greatest place on the planet is the ocean.

"Few people get to spend time underwater.

"It's the most majestic thing on our planet."

00:00Ash is pregnant and she has a very specific pregnancy craving.
00:04It's a little bit difficult because it has to be fresh, it has to be big and I have to get it with my own hands.
00:09Ideally it would just be ice cream or a burger or something, but for her it's a delicacy that we call kina.
00:15Despite what people think about the Pacific Ocean, it is very cold at this time of year.
00:20And if it wasn't for the overwhelming amount of love that I have for my darling, I would not be doing this.
00:27In saying that, I don't have a baby inside of me, so I'd go to the ends of the earth for her crazy little cravings.
00:39I'm just going to try some kina.
00:41It's so creamy.
00:43How long did it take you to shower?
00:45About 10 minutes, they were huge.
00:47Were they? Were they a long spike?
00:49Yeah.
00:51Let me see.
00:55Mmm, that's so good.
00:58Wait, so I doubled it?
01:00Huh?
01:01You're taking it down.
01:03I'll double it.
01:09Today?
01:10Mmm.
01:12That's so creamy.
01:15Yum.
01:21Good.
01:24My spoons can't make that one.
01:26Oh, they can.
01:51Good.
02:12That one, that one was ready to reproduce.
02:21Mmm.
02:28If you're watching this, I hope you've never been to New Zealand.
02:32I hope I'm the first dad that looks like me you've ever seen.
02:36My name's Louis, and I'm on a mission to tell the whole world a little story about how much I love my family.
02:43I want you to see me love them, be silly, playful, affectionate, for this story to be so huge
02:50that any stereotypes about dads that look like me don't stand a chance.
02:55This is a wholesome story, one of goodness, and I don't need much from you.
03:00You've already done the hard part by watching this video.
03:03The only thing I need is you to press follow.
