00:00Every day, 12 Filipino women die from this disease.
00:05And every year, it adds up to 6,000 cases.
00:09In fact, this is the second most common cancer among women.
00:14We refer to it as cervical cancer.
00:19Cervical cancer is the occurrence of a malignant tumor in the uterus.
00:24Its common sun hero is called Human Papilloma Virus or HPV.
00:31It can be caused by having different sexual partners.
00:36There is pain or what is called hapdi when intercourse or having sex with your spouse.
00:45Or discharge, sometimes brown, sometimes red.
00:48When it gets worse, the vaginal bleeding gets worse.
00:52The most common symptom of cervical cancer is having vaginal bleeding even if there is no menstruation.
01:02This is what Edna first experienced when she was diagnosed positive for cervical cancer 12 years ago.
01:10It bleeds a lot.
01:12I have it regularly for two weeks.
01:14Two weeks I don't have it, two weeks I have it.
01:16My relatives told me that I might have it.
01:20There was a mini-pause so I didn't notice it.
01:23When it reached two years, my children told me that it was different.
01:30Just this year, Odessa underwent what is called a total hysterectomy
01:34where the entire cervix and uterus of the woman is removed
01:37to avoid the spread of tumors.
01:40However, those who underwent this operation are not yet pregnant.
01:45Because if you don't undergo the surgery, the uterus may return.
01:52To be honest, cervical cancer is a type of cancer that can be fought through early detection.
01:59Just like a regular pap smear.
02:03This is the part that is injected.
02:07Aside from this, HPV vaccine can also be administered,
02:10just like what we did for my children six years ago.
02:14When a woman reaches the age of 12 years and above, she can be vaccinated.
02:22My first vaccination for the anti-HPV vaccine is now complete.
02:28This vaccine is against the human papilloma virus, which is the main cause of cervical cancer.
02:34It has two booster shots that are injected every month
02:38and every six months after the first vaccination.
02:42The HPV vaccine is usually worth more than P3,000.
02:48Aside from abnormal bleeding,
02:49cervical cancer also has symptoms of discharge with a foul smell.
02:55This is what Angie experienced for the first time
02:58when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2010.
03:03The first thing I felt was a foul smell,
03:08like the smell of a fish.
03:10That's what the doctor told me before I got a pap smear,
03:16but it wasn't a pap smear, it was a biopsy.
03:20Like Edna, Angie also underwent a total hysterectomy.
03:24But for women with cervical cancer who still want to have children,
03:28it can be said that her cervix and uterus were not completely removed.
03:33In an operation called a radical trachelectomy,
03:36the part of the cervix that the uterus pierced is removed.
03:41It can be done, but of course, it depends on how bad the case is.
03:47If the cancer cells do not spread easily,
03:50it can also be said that she underwent radiation therapy
03:53where the cancer cells are killed in the body by X-ray or gamma rays.
04:00For now, both Edza and Angie are cancer-free.
04:04It is true to think that they were able to overcome this test of their lives
04:09through the right medicine.
04:12That's why their advice is to be aware of the symptoms of cervical cancer.
04:18For those who feel it, it is best to be guided by real experts.
