00:00camp day yesterday in the W a five game slate where all five
00:07games tipped by new local time in their respective cities and
00:12at those venues what a day it was five games in the WNBA and
00:18it started j y at 11am Eastern Time in Connecticut between the
00:22top two teams in the W the New York Liberty, the Connecticut
00:26Sun who both entered yesterday 17 and four battling for that
00:30top spot at the top of the table that now belongs to the Liberty
00:347168 the victory for New York they even cover as a slight two
00:39and a half point road favorite in Connecticut a total of one
00:4258 and a half states under how big of a win was that for New
00:47York to take that number one spot in the WNBA.
00:51It was a great spot really quick folks shout out to the WNBA. We
00:55do this in women's college basketball as well. We call it a
00:57school day game where you get a lot of young kids that don't
01:00have the opportunity to go watch the college basketball. Shout
01:04out to the WNBA for taking a day a day and doing that across
01:07the country. Now when you look at the game in Elkinsville,
01:09Connecticut 7168 what was amazing to me Ben is a team in
01:13New York Liberty arguably the best offensive team metric wise
01:17in the WNBA won a game play a completely different way half
01:22court didn't shoot the ball. Well and lock down defensively
01:27they listen that they shot three of 13 from three. That is God
01:31awful. But when you have you know, Brandon Stewart dominating
01:35with 14 rebounds John Cole Jones giving you 11 rebounds. They
01:39lose the rebounding battle by two. But to me the biggest play
01:43the play of Sabrina and rescue big bucket down stretch up by
01:48one to put them up of three and then the game ceiling block. We
01:52talked about this big three or big four. If you want to call
01:56Bannister or even if starting five and we talked about
01:58Bonaji Laney Hamilton who come that did not play yesterday.
02:02They showed last night Ben. I thought for the first time an
02:05ability to win a grinded out game where they can't score
02:11offensively. You know what? I know it but we both watch a lot
02:14of W. It takes defense, especially in the playoff to
02:18win games. That's how the Liberty wanted and they now
02:21not only have a one game lead in the standings, but they've
02:24won both matchups versus the Sun both in Connecticut, which
02:28means the next two games and the regular season happened in
02:30New York next game. I do believe is next week.
02:34How about that 18 wins now for the Liberty and that was a game
02:36that was showcasing the two best teams right now in the regular
02:39season. If we segue over to the West Coast here a team that we
02:42might think is going to be the best team come playoff time.
02:45That's going to be the aces now sit at 14 and seven after their
02:47victory over the storm 84 to 79, which saw Asia Wilson coach
02:5224 and 20 yesterday best player in the WNBA. The aces rounding
02:59into form. What are we thinking about the aces performance
03:01yesterday?
03:02I mean, she she had a 24 and 20 game and she shot under 50% from
03:07the floor like that. That's the wildest thing guys. That's
03:10gonna be 30 and 20 that she could have had last night. But
03:14here's what I love. Not just the 20 rebounds, right? But the
03:17fact that she had the four blocks of three steals and two
03:20assists and got zero turnovers in 35 minutes. That is just a
03:26team when she plays like this. It is phenomenal. But we keep
03:30going back to it. And Ben always calls her the right name. The
03:34point God ever. I know they lost the game last week. But ever
03:38since Chelsea Grace come back, they have just rounded into
03:42form. They're in their right spots. And as much as Asia
03:45Wilson is playing well played phenomenal. It's the best play
03:48in the world. Hands down. It really to me has unlocked Jackie
03:53young, where she could go worry about scoring more. And then it
03:57could be Kelsey plummet to three point line. Jackie young high
04:00score yesterday besides Jewel Lloyd 27 points 10 of 19 for
04:04four and missed five of her misses were from three. She
04:07didn't even see the ball great either. But you said it best.
04:10They may not be the best team by record. But they are the
04:12defending champions. They are the best team in the WNBA. And
04:16they're still properly priced as a favorite to win the WNBA
04:19championship. Chelsea Gray did not play in the first 12 games
04:24of this season for Las Vegas after they won two consecutive
04:27WNBA titles. They had lost three straight a three game skid for
04:32the first time since the 2019 season, which just makes you
04:35laugh when you think about it. They had dropped four or five
04:38before Chelsea Gray returned on the bench. She's now back in
04:41the story five for Becky Hammond. You can see the
04:43dividends Jackie young leading score 27 points yesterday
04:47despite a 20 and 20 game 24 points and 20 boards for Asia
04:52Wilson. JY you saw the the odds there as it pertains to the
04:56standings. The aces have won eight of the nine games with
04:58gray back in the lineup 14 and seven but still the fourth best
05:02record in the WNBA. When you look at the top five, I'm not
05:07going to ask you about the tier of two plus 145. The ace is the
05:10favorites or the Liberty the second best number plus 170 to
05:14have a WNBA finals rematch from a season ago. This is my
05:18question. Can all five of those teams legitimately be in
05:22contention for a WNBA title or is it still just the two in
05:27front of everybody else? No, I think you got to look at at
05:31least the team of the group of four, right? So I'm going to
05:34throw Millicent in there who has won the Commissioner's Cup
05:37who has two wins over the New York Liberty already one on the
05:40road one at home, Connecticut defends like no one's business
05:44Ben, you know, and I know what their problem is. They don't
05:46shoot the ball well enough from three, but they will get you in
05:49a dogfight. They will muck it up and they will play the game
05:52their way. Seattle is intriguing because of the ability to score
05:57up to Lauren Medgar Burr a woman. Okay, it's got a Dick
06:00Smith. They're players as well. The team that I still think is
06:04lying in the weeds that could give a team a scare in the
06:07playoffs. It's Phoenix because of Brittany Griner size inside
06:13the shot making creativity of Khalil copper and obviously the
06:18all-around game of that Rossi Natasha cloud also as well that
06:23team is dangerous as well, but it is amazing because I think
06:27there's more parity to the league this year. There's more
06:30teams are going to be involved in the race. I think it's going
06:32to make it exciting, especially if the semifinals are the
06:35Liberty and the aces. I think the WNBA needs the aces to jump
06:40one of those spots.
06:41Listen last year by the time we got into the second half of the
06:44season where we are now, we're well past 20 games for all teams
06:47around the WNBA in a 40 game regular season. Of course,
06:50All-Star break on the horizon, the Olympic break on the
06:54horizon. But by the time we got to the second half last year, it
06:57was the aces. It was the Liberty and everybody else had a 12 to
07:00one number or higher. You saw those five teams. They're all at
07:04plus 950 or shorter should be more balanced six teams with a
07:09winning record, including Phoenix. Now 12 and 10 Khalil
07:12copper huge game yesterday, the Mercury putting up the century
07:15mark and a win against Dallas. Now to the teams in seven and
07:20eight the two rookies the debate of that the two rookies in the
07:24heat of the WNBA rookie of the year debate and the odds race on
07:29display yesterday on camp day in the WNBA, Indiana's Caitlin
07:33Clark, Chicago's Angel Reese, both adding historic
07:37performances yet again on a Wednesday afternoon. We start
07:40with the game in Indianapolis. We'll get to Caitlin Clark stat
07:43line in just a moment. But for a favorite team, JY that entered
07:47winners of six of their last nine and play much better
07:50basketball as a seven point home favorite against one of the
07:54worst teams in the W the Washington Mystics to lose on
07:58your home floor by 589 84. Despite a rally attempt in the
08:04fourth and final quarter, not necessarily a good site. How bad
08:09of a loss was this for the fever yesterday?
08:13It was a bad loss. And let's be honest, then they did not look
08:17like a team that was ready to play a team that was down by 14
08:20points at the break down almost 20 after three and it took a
08:25feverish rally in the fourth quarter just to make it a game
08:28and a team that has struggled on a defensive end of the floor
08:32giving up 89 points in the game last night. That's not something
08:35you want to do giving up 51 points in the first half. That's
08:38not the effort that you Chrissy signs and that team needs to
08:41have if they're wanting to be taken seriously as a team that
08:44could make a playoff run. Now I will say this. They're one of
08:47the worst teams in the WNBA the Mystics but do know folks after
08:51going. Oh and 12 to start the year. This team is six and five
08:55in their last 11 games. They have given team some tough
08:58games. I know a New York Liberty game. I think that they were I
09:02think they were close in they only lost at Minnesota by seven.
09:06So they took the sun to overtime. So I'll go to the
09:11most team is playing much better basketball, but still been after
09:14the way that that fever team won against the Liberty over
09:17weekend. That is not a good look at home seven point favorite
09:21to turn around and lose a game to the Mystics.
09:24To the one that game the fever now sitting on the season with
09:27nine wins, you know, another team with nine wins right now
09:30have to pick up a W yesterday. That's the sky. They went 78 to
09:3369 over the dream, which included Angel Reese getting 11
09:37points 13 rebounds and three steals to keep that double
09:40double streak alive, but coach not without some controversy
09:44here.
09:46Yeah. Well, I'm going to conspiracy theory. I'm going
09:50into the Dottie right side playbook. Do it. It's simply
09:54put folks back in the day. There was a football game. Aaron
09:58Rogers going back to pass Michael Strahan needed a sack
10:02to break the old play. What Brett thought see I hey, I got
10:06the team, right? It was a press and what he should have rolled
10:10rolled out left. He rolled out right and here he is sack and
10:15he gets the record. So now we look at Angel Reese and folks
10:19very simply put I don't care what anybody says if you're up
10:23seven with under seven seconds to play. Why are you calling
10:27for the ball? Like the game is over. What do you need the ball
10:31for? Oh, I know you got nine points. But what do you need?
10:35You need someone from the other team to step up to the plate
10:38and help you her name. Tina Charles. Come on down to the
10:41congregation because you're in this to your Fowler and then
10:45you go to the line and everybody's happy and everybody
10:48said, oh, what about Taylor Clark and the coach left her in
10:51no, no, no, no. These are not the same seven point lead six
10:57seconds left. Game is over. If you get in a ball, don't touch
11:02her. It's stop padding. And I don't care what anybody says
11:05about it.
11:07It's really not a conspiracy theory. It was as clear as day
11:10to see what was happening. Kennedy Carter had the ball in
11:13her possession under 10 seconds left was going to dribble out
11:17the clock when Marina Mabry came down the floor for Chicago called
11:20for throws it into Angel Reese. She is found with six seconds
11:24Tina Charles kind of ducked out of there the veteran that likes
11:27to help out the young rooks in the WNBA one of her teammates on
11:31Atlanta put her arms up at the rest like what are you blowing
11:33the whistle for in a game where we're down by seven with six
11:37seconds left to Angel Reese's credit. She had to hit both
11:40free throws and she did. I don't think it diminishes her 13 game
11:46record double double streak now at 14, but it does allow you to
11:51poke some holes in how this record came to be Caitlin Clark
11:55yesterday 29 points 13 boards are 13 assists rather five made
12:00threes five boards five steals three blocks the only stat line
12:03we've ever seen in the history of the WNBA or the NBA to put up
12:08those kind of numbers now a stronger favorite Jay Wyatt minus
12:12850 to win Rookie of the Year. Do you agree with the odds
12:16movement here in the final 30 seconds of this segment?
12:19The quote the famous WWF ref for managers like turn out the
12:24lights. The party's over. It's done. Caitlin Clark Rookie of
12:29the Year. Wow, that's where we stand right now. Many might
12:34debate that statement but Jay why we appreciate it a beta why
12:38a beta hey to the break for Jay why more in the early line up
12:41next.
