00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the standout moments from
00:09the first season of One Piece's live-action adaptation.
00:18Be on the lookout for spoilers ahead.
00:25Individually, we knew that Luffy, Zoro and Nami were capable of kicking a ludicrous
00:31amount of ass, but it's here we get to see them combine their talents as they battle
00:36their way through wave after wave of marines in their own backyard.
00:41This capped off one hell of a brawl against Axe Hand Morgan, in which we got to see Zoro
00:50utilise his three-sword style for the first time, as well as Luffy demonstrate just how
00:59painfully versatile his rubber powers can be.
01:06Luffy's inheritance of his iconic straw hat is one of his most defining moments, where
01:17he decides he'll become a great pirate that will one day even eclipse that of his hero
01:22Shanks.
01:23After surviving being kidnapped, drowning and being eaten by a sea beast, Shanks chooses
01:36to leave his precious headgear with Luffy as a symbol of his faith in his dream.
01:59It's an incredibly sweet and touching moment, where the almost paternal relationship between
02:04them really sells you on how vital a role model Shanks was for the future Pirate King.
02:18Fans could not be more pleased with the live-actions introduction and portrayal of One Piece's
02:24most famous clown.
02:26And why wouldn't they be?
02:27Jeff Ward slayed the role of Buggy, bringing a murderous charm and hilarity to the jester
02:33as only he could.
02:40The man held an entire town hostage as his captive audience, and nearly killed Luffy
02:45multiple times.
02:47And yet, we couldn't help but laugh and be engrossed by his every moment.
03:00Wrapping him around for the majority of the show's run was definitely a wise decision,
03:05because the tightrope between funny and fiendish that his iteration of the character is walking
03:10has been pitch-perfect so far.
03:31While he may not have a hill as a backdrop, Zoro's battle against Bucci and Sham is
03:36still a great display of the swordsman's skills.
03:39With Kaeya's mansion in lockdown, Zoro is forced to do battle against Kuro's cronies,
03:44in a pretty tight space at that.
03:47Still, a couple of kitties aren't anything to the pirate hunter, who utilises the stairs,
03:52banisters and every other surface to his advantage.
04:05The choreography really sells the scene, and while there aren't any tiger traps,
04:10seeing Makinew do cool shit with his swords always makes for a great time.
04:25Another villain portrayal that adds a fantastic spin to the original character, Alexander
04:30Maniatis is so deliciously wicked as the captain of the Black Cat Pirates, that seeing him
04:35parade around as both butler and eventual sociopath is an absolute delight.
04:41Though the pinnacle undoubtedly comes when Kuro lets the cat out of the bag, and reveals
04:46his savage nature.
04:48First by killing off Mary, then by stalking Kaeya like a serial killer.
05:13Even though he more than deserved the ass-beating he got from Luffy, we're sort of glad Kuro
05:18escaped, so we at least have the chance to see him flex his claws down the line again.
05:35After being tossed inside of a great well by Bucci and Sham, Zoro is left with only
05:40one option… to climb his way to freedom.
05:53Easier said than done, as escaping initially proves to be even too much for his innate
05:58strength.
05:59There, his slow ascendance is intercut with an extensive flashback.
06:14Where we see a young Zoro train with, battle and eventually forge a promise with his childhood
06:21to eventually become the world's greatest swordsman.
06:32The combat choreography, as well as the emotional resonance, might make this flashback the best
06:38of the live-action bunch.
06:40Especially as we see Zoro finally pull himself out of a death sentence.
06:54Just when you thought it was impossible for the world's strongest swordsman to become
06:57even more of a badass, they give him an introduction like this.
07:08While somewhat adjacent to the source material, the reveal of Mihawk as he slices through
07:13Don Krieg's armada is a literal spectacle.
07:17Nonchalantly slicing up pirates, taking down the Don like he was nothing, slicing an entire
07:23galleon in half.
07:32You couldn't ask for a better demonstration for the power differences in the world of
07:37One Piece, or a cooler messenger to deliver it.
07:56Undoubtedly the most iconic moment in the East Blue Arc, and all of One Piece in general,
08:05so to see it brought to life so faithfully, and with some powerhouse acting behind it,
08:10was just plain awesome.
08:21Devastated by Arlong's betrayal, and the abuse she suffered over the years, Nami breaks
08:27down and starts to stab at her tattoo, only for Luffy to intervene.
08:32Overcome, all Nami can do is break down and plead for Luffy to save her.
08:57And what does Luffy say in return?
08:59Seriously, the two actors were amazing here.
09:10Talk about ending on a high.
09:17Taking the fight to Arlong and his army of fishmen, the Straw Hat crew all got a chance
09:22to show off here in the best way possible.
09:25Usopp set Chew on fire, Buggy made a grand return, and less than gracious exit, and Luffy
09:45literally brought the house down on Arlong with one hell of a bombardment of gum-gum
09:50abilities.
09:55Though our highlight has to be Zoro and Sanji wiping out every fishman that comes their
10:00way, especially when the chef starts unleashing some devastatingly fancy footwork.
10:29If you're on your phone, make sure to go into your settings and switch on notifications.
10:38Becoming the strongest swordsman in the world is no easy feat, as Zoro discovered the hard
10:43way when he challenged Mihawk to a duel to the death.
10:54Confident in his strength and determined to fulfil his dream, the demon takes on Hawkeye's
10:59for the mantle.
11:09But as every One Piece fan knows, it turns into a one-sided slaughterfest as Mihawk reveals
11:14the quagmire between them.
11:31The battle between the two is brief but blinding, and absolutely nails the source material's
11:36tone and grandeur.
11:42We can't wait for that rematch.
