Short video filmed at Edinburgh Castle firstly of an event paying rememberance to the men and woman whose lives were affected by the conflict of the Falklands War followed by a recording of a British Legion Beating Retreat, a regular event that usually takes place annually.

Question of the Day:
Have you attended a Beating Retreat? Let me know within the comments section below.

Every year on Edinburgh Castle's esplanade, a Scottish themed Beating Retreat takes place involving many civilian pipes and brass bands. Also taking place in early Spring 2007 was a special remembrance memorial event to pay respect to those people whose lives were affected by the events that took place during the Falklands War. Although I was too young to remember this event not being born until 1989, I still wanted to document the two events while trying out my Hi8 camera I had been gifted by a member of the Edinburgh Cine and Video Society.

Here is some background information on the some of the events that took place during of the war Falklands. By Late March, 1981, Argentina had been in the middle of a devastating economic crisis where there was large scale rioting against the military Junta that had been governing the country since 1976.

The ongoing tension between the two countries over the islands grew larger on the 19th March when a group of hired Argentine merchants raised their Argentine Flag at South Georgia which in hindsight was the first offensive action in the war. The Junta of the Argentine Military thought that the UK would reinforce it's South Atlantic Forces but instead they ordered the invasion of the Falklands Islands.

00:55On May the 29th and 14th of June, 2007,
00:59I went along to two important events
01:02paying tribute to those who fought in the Falklands War.
01:05380 veterans took part in a parade
01:08which started from Johnston Terrace
01:10down the Royal Mile to St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
01:14The parade was led by the Royal Marines of Scotland
01:17along with many ex-servicemen and standard bearers.
01:21The Royal Navy was also present from Her Majesty's ship Exeter
01:25which was docked in Leith for their five-day visit.
01:28A beating retreat took place on Edinburgh's Castle Esplanade.
01:35The ceremony featured the massed pipes and drums
01:38of ten Legion branches with the Royal British Legion Central Band.
01:4336 colours were also shown.
01:46These events are Scotland's way of paying their tributes
01:50to the people who died in the 74-day conflict.
01:53The events have been organised by the Royal British Legion Scotland
01:57which also hopes to recognise the achievements
02:00of those who helped liberate the islands of the Falklands.
02:11The pipes and drums now play a tune called
02:14The Green Hills of Tyrol,
02:16coached by drum major Mike Lively and pipe major Frank Orr.
02:27The Green Hills of Tyrol
02:57During the Falklands War, 255 Britons died,
03:08755 were wounded and many more suffered mental wounds.
03:13The war began when Argentine troops invaded the Falkland Islands,
03:17South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
03:21The war was triggered by the occupation of South Georgia by Argentina
03:26on the 19th of March 1982,
03:29followed by the occupation of the Falklands
03:31and ended when Argentina surrendered on the 14th of June 1982.
03:38War was never actually declared by either side.
03:41The initial invasion was considered by Argentina
03:44as a re-occupation of its own territory
03:47and by Britain as an invasion of a British overseas territory.
03:53The war cost a thousand lives on both sides
03:56and the impact the war has had is most noticeable
03:59within the families of those who fought in the conflict.
04:03Now the pipes and drums play The Heights of Durgai.
04:24It was a fair challenge filming this event
04:27as there were lots of crowds standing in front of my camera.
04:30However, I tried my best and battled my way through.
04:34All the bands present on that evening had only met several hours before
04:38so I had not much time to rehearse.
04:40With the dedication of the band members,
04:42the display went ahead without a hitch.
04:45It was a very windy night, quite cold,
04:48but I was determined to keep filming the event.
04:51Unfortunately, my battery ran out, so I had to stop filming.
05:16Another tune now is the 79th version of The Heights of Durgai.
05:20The 70th name, farewell to Gibraltar.
05:50The 70th version of The Heights of Durgai.
06:20The 70th version of The Heights of Durgai.
06:50The 70th version of The Heights of Durgai.
07:20The 70th version of The Heights of Durgai.
07:39The Central Band of the Royal British Legion was also present
07:43and are seen here playing Voice of the Guns.
07:46The Central Band was led by Sergeant Major Roger Burt.
07:51As the events come to a close,
07:53I look forward to making many more films on future events to come.
07:57I've always had a passion for marching and music
08:00and I fairly enjoyed myself this year.
08:03So long until next time.
08:16Thank you.
08:46Thank you.
09:16Thank you.
