00:00Chelsea on the 6th of December 1997 marked the first home game of Christian Gross' regime at Spurs.
00:07The north London side were languishing in the bottom three and therefore desperate for points.
00:12Chelsea had no such worries.
00:14They were second in the league and eager to close the six-point gap on leaders Manchester United.
00:21The Swiss manager had already had the desired effect in his first game in charge
00:25when he delivered a first away win of the season at Everton.
00:29But Gross had to make do without skipper Sol Campbell who was missing with a shoulder problem.
00:33John Scales came into play at centre-back with Scottish international Colin Calderwood
00:37moving into the holding role in midfield and also captaining the side in Campbell's absence.
00:44Chelsea boss Ruud Gullit hadn't named an unchanged team all season
00:48and he made one alteration for this one.
00:51Following on from a 4-0 win against Derby,
00:53Tore Andre Floh came in for Mark Hughes with Gianluca Vialli left on the bench again.
00:59Chelsea had a great record against Tottenham.
01:01They hadn't lost at White Hart Lane since 1987.
01:05Your match commentator for this one is Gary Bloom.
01:13And we're underway, Chelsea playing from right to left in this first half.
01:18Chelsea have won six of their last seven games in all competitions.
01:23And Babayano affects a very, very solid challenge there on Rule Fox.
01:29England manager Glenn Hoddle among today's spectators
01:33of course the former manager of Chelsea and the former Tottenham player.
01:39Scales.
01:43Di Matteo.
01:46Sinclair.
02:00Chelsea trailed Manchester United by 3-0.
02:04Chelsea trailed Manchester United by three points early this morning.
02:09And since then that gap has widened to six.
02:12Schindler such an important figure for Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.
02:18Given that three-roll to attack Chelsea, that's Floh heading the ball on.
02:23Vega, this is Ferdinand.
02:25Fox to his right.
02:27Fox now.
02:29Schindler!
02:30What a save!
02:31Schindler!
02:32What a save!
02:37Well the football must have been little more than a blur to Edgar Hui.
02:43Schindler got every ounce of his weight into that shot.
02:52Tottenham have made a very bright start to this match.
03:02Ramon Vega.
03:07Ian Walker has been a virtual stranger to the football in the opening six minutes.
03:17Ginola now who was fouled there by Le Seu.
03:20Just had his ankles tapped.
03:24Suddenly there's a great appetite for the game by David Ginola.
03:28Ginola with a free-kick.
03:31Good effort by Ramon Vega who scored Tottenham's opening goal last week.
03:39And that was a header too.
03:40Good effort by Ramon Vega who scored Tottenham's opening goal last week.
03:48And that was a header too.
04:02Petrescu.
04:05Le Boeuf.
04:08White to Le Seu.
04:11Nielsen.
04:13Ginola.
04:20Di Matteo.
04:24It's a very, I was going to say, even game so far.
04:27I think probably you'd have to say Tottenham have just shaded it.
04:31They've had the better opportunities.
04:41Fox.
04:43Wise.
04:46Certainly in terms of goal-scoring opportunities Tottenham have shaded it.
04:52Petrescu.
04:54Drifted round Wilson.
04:56And here's Le Seu who's got him behind car.
04:59Flo.
05:00Petrescu.
05:01Great save by Walker.
05:03Both goalkeepers now have produced outstanding saves.
05:33Le Boeuf.
05:35Tries a shot.
05:36Another good save by Walker.
05:40Chelsea certainly have had two very good goal-scoring opportunities in as many minutes.
05:44Di Matteo.
05:45That's not as good.
05:51Well Ian Walker was almost surprised here by this long range shot by Frank Le Boeuf.
06:04But Christian Gross, even since his relatively recent arrival at the club,
06:08has made big strides with his Tottenham team, who are playing with confidence now.
06:13And as Everton found out last week, no pushovers.
06:19And here's Le Seu.
06:21He's got him behind car.
06:23And here's Le Seu.
06:25He's got him behind car.
06:27And here's Le Seu.
06:29He's got him behind car.
06:31And here's Le Seu.
06:33Chelsea are finding it out this week.
06:36Fox.
06:37Nielsen in support.
06:38Nielsen.
06:40Ginola.
06:45Twice now.
06:53I think Le Boeuf may be slightly fortunate to escape a caution there.
07:00Two minutes to go to half-time.
07:01Tottenham trail 1-0.
07:03Sinter with a free kick.
07:04It's 1-1.
07:07Ramon Vega's done it again.
07:13Perfect Swiss timing.
07:19Ramon Vega, who headed the opening goal last week against Everton,
07:25has had his spurs level here.
07:27No one picked out his leap at the back post.
07:30And Tottenham quite deservedly are level.
07:41Ginola.
07:49Wise.
07:54And this is Le Seu.
07:55Good cross by Le Seu.
07:57He really does cross the ball quite superbly.
08:00And that's the half-time whistle.
08:03And the half-time score from White Hart Lane is Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea.
08:13Surprisingly, Chelsea have lost four of their last five away games.
08:20One wonders what they'll do in this game.
08:23One wonders what they'll do in this second half.
08:30Calderwood.
08:32Calderwood playing in central midfield and captaining Tottenham.
08:35Won it back.
08:39Le Seu.
08:48Ramon Vega.
08:50Who, for the second successive week, has scored for Christian Gross.
09:04I suspect that Christian Gross is asking Chris Hewton
09:08to relay the instructions onto the field.
09:11And Darren Anderton warming up now for Tottenham.
09:20Rather hefty challenge by Alan Neilson on Dennis Wise.
09:38And Le Boeuf with the free-kick.
09:41Trying to pick out Thore-André Flo. Unable to do so.
09:44Sinton.
10:03Ramon Vega.
10:04Missed out.
10:05This is Zola.
10:08Zola.
10:09Ramon Vega.
10:10Missed out.
10:11This is Zola.
10:14Petrescu.
10:17Nicholls at the far post.
10:19It's gone in!
10:23Chelsea take the lead within two minutes of the start of the second half.
10:30Petrescu
10:31laid this on.
10:32Lovely cross.
10:34And headed in by Roberto Di Matteo.
10:39Le Boeuf.
10:47Le Boeuf.
10:56Leso.
10:58Zola.
10:59Oh dear.
11:03Zola tried to get out of the way there.
11:05I think it was Rule Fox who tried to dispossess him.
11:08And in trying to avoid Fox's challenge,
11:11might have inadvertently just stepped on him.
11:19That foul by Fox gives Chelsea the free-kick.
11:24Leso.
11:25Zola.
11:32Le Boeuf.
11:34Petrescu!
11:36Oh, that's a great goal!
11:39What a superb pass by Frank Le Boeuf.
11:45And the most sublime of touches here
11:48by Dan Petrescu.
11:50The man will be facing England in the World Cup Finals.
11:54Glenn Hoddle's team beware.
11:56One wonders whether this game is already beyond spurs.
12:26And now Le Boeuf has taken a bit of a kick-kick.
12:32Well, that goal by Dan Petrescu was absolutely delightful.
12:52Fox.
12:57Edinburgh.
12:59Ferdinand.
13:01Wilson helping it forward.
13:04Oh, and Justin Edinburgh followed through on Ed Dehoy.
13:09And it's getting a bit of a ticking off from referee Dermot Gallagher.
13:17Zola.
13:19Di Matteo.
13:27Darren Anderton.
13:44Le Boeuf.
13:57And it looks like Chelsea will narrow the gap on Manchester United
14:02at the head of the Premier League.
14:13Here's Petrescu.
14:18Flo.
14:20You just have to admire this Chelsea football.
14:22This is Flo.
14:23And what a goal.
14:27It was a wonderful move by Chelsea.
14:30And tall Andre Flo scores his second goal of the game.
14:34And Chelsea make it 4-1.
14:43Zola helped the ball into his path.
14:46And he drove the ball past Walker.
14:56Nicholls.
14:59And Le Seu can attack Tottenham again.
15:09Le Seu just bumped off the ball by Ruel Fox.
15:22Schindler's won the ball.
15:23This is Ferdinand.
15:25Les Ferdinand sums up Tottenham's afternoon really.
15:29A lack of quality finishing has been the culpable difference between the two teams.
15:34And when Ferdinand had a rare sight of goal, this was the best he could muster.
15:47Zola.
15:49Di Matteo.
15:54It'll come to Frank Sinclair.
16:02Petrescu.
16:03Di Matteo.
16:05Just the wrong side of the upright.
16:11You've always got that feeling that Chelsea could score a couple more goals
16:15should they so desire.
16:17And at the moment they're using the Tottenham goal more or less for target practice.
16:29Good flick on by Ferdinand.
16:45Le Beuf.
17:13Le Beuf.
17:16Di Matteo.
17:19Ferdinand, it's very crowded in there.
17:28Calderwood's made a mistake.
17:30Zola.
17:32As support from Dan Petrescu.
17:34Nicholls is arriving.
17:35Still Zola.
17:36Nicholls.
17:37It's another.
17:41That mistake by Colin Calderwood.
17:43Cruelly.
17:45Rammed home.
17:46Eventually by Mark Nicholls.
17:51Five goals for Chelsea.
17:57Calderwood made the mistake.
17:59He was exposed here by Zola.
18:01But just waiting for support.
18:03Release the ball at the ideal time.
18:14Rule Fox.
18:17Darren Anderton.
18:20Ed Dehoye is probably Chelsea's man of the match.
18:24Another fine save by the Chelsea keeper.
18:36Petrescu.
18:37Zola.
18:44Chelsea inevitably first to the ball.
18:48Di Matteo.
18:52Sinclair.
18:55Wise.
19:04Dennis Wise once again.
19:08Le Beuf.
19:14Then it's keep ball for Chelsea at the moment.
19:17Petrescu.
19:18Flo.
19:19Who's looking for his hat trick.
19:25And now Tottenham can break out in defence.
19:28Chelsea guilty of ever elaborating that.
19:35And this is Schindler.
19:37Le Beuf brings it out of defence.
19:40Flo is onside.
19:43Is this his hat trick?
19:45It is, you know.
19:47What a way for Chelsea to round off
19:50this incredible performance at White Hart Lane.
19:54And once again it was a superb pass
19:57by Frank Le Beuf.
19:58Which released Flo.
20:00And look at that for a team goal.
20:02Flo still had a lot to do here.
20:06And look how he helped the ball
20:09with ease past Ian Walker.
20:16So a hat trick last week for Gianfranco Zola.
20:19One for Andre Flo this week.
20:24And a hat trick this week.
20:28And a hat trick this week.
20:31Oh, and there's one or two cries
20:33if you're not fit to wear the shirts
20:36by the Tottenham supporters to their own team.
20:46Christian Gross will have a very
20:49uncomfortable few days till Tottenham play again.
20:53And a hat trick this week.
20:56And a hat trick this week.
20:58Uncomfortable few days till Tottenham play again.
21:01This isn't just a defeat.
21:02It's a humiliation.
21:11White Hart Lane already half empty now.
21:15Only people staying in their seats are the press.
21:19And the Chelsea fans.
21:20Everybody else is home for an early cup of tea.
21:25And this will go down in history
21:27as one of the blackest days in Tottenham's history.
21:31Final score, incredibly from White Hart Lane.
21:34Spurs 1, Chelsea 6.
21:38Well, under Christian Gross, Spurs eventually managed
21:41to pull away from the relegation zone.
21:44The club re-signed Jürgen Klinsmann on loan
21:46and his goals managed to haul them to safety.
21:49They finished in 14th place on 44 points.
21:53Chelsea stayed in the title shake-up
21:55till the end of January, at which point they were still second.
21:59But a poor run saw them slip back
22:01and also led to the dismissal of Ruud Gullit as manager.
22:05Gianluca Vialli took over
22:07and the Blues finished a mixed campaign in fourth place.
