MCMC to provide guidelines on potential Maxis and U Mobile merger, says Fahmi

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will provide guidelines to Maxis Bhd and U Mobile should the two telecommunications companies agree to merge, said Fahmi Fadzil.

When asked about the potential merger on Tuesday (July 17) , the Communications Minister clarified that the same procedures and processes used for the Celcom-Digi merger would apply to Maxis and U Mobile, adding that the ministry would not intervene, as Maxis' proposal is a commercial decision.

00:00What do you think about the offer to buy a mobile phone?
00:07The offer is a commercial decision. We don't interfere.
00:12We are neutral, whether it is good or not.
00:16If both parties feel the need,
00:23MCMC, as the body of Cowlesley, will investigate.
00:28Previously, when Cellcom and Digi were merged,
00:34MCMC gave some guidelines and conditions,
00:41including the submission of a number of spectrum bands
00:46to both companies,
00:50the issuance of certain units of business
00:55to ensure a healthy competition in the telecommunications industry.
01:04Similarly, if any companies want to merge,
01:11we at the Ministry and MCMC will see
01:15that there is no aspect of dominance,
01:20or a party that dominates the entire sector.
01:25So we need to ensure that the competition exists and is healthy.
01:31This is the priority for MCMC.
01:34Are the procedures and processes the same?
01:36The procedures and processes are the same.
01:38But I don't have an opinion
01:42whether it is good or not for the market and users.
