Astronomers Discover First Ever Proof of Lava Tubes on the Moon

When humans travel back to the Moon and set up a Moon base, it’s not as simple as breaking out the hammer and nails here on Earth. However, a recent discovery of a cave on the lunar surface could be exactly the spot to set up shop.

00:00When humans travel back to the moon and set up a moon base, it's not as simple as breaking
00:08out the hammer and nails here on Earth.
00:10Astronauts will need a different kind of shelter, not only one that can provide oxygen on the
00:14atmospheric-less lunar surface, but also one that will shield them from the sun's harmful
00:18radiation, not to mention extreme temperatures, and that's why this recently discovered cave
00:22on the moon could be just what astronomers have been looking for.
00:25The initial data for this find was collected way back in 2010, however they recently re-analyzed
00:30the data using new techniques, with astronomer Lorenzo Bruzzone who worked on the new analysis
00:34saying that they have discovered radar reflections from the area of the pit that are best explained
00:39by an underground cave conduit, adding that it could even lead to a network of underground
00:43caverns that were once lava tubes.
00:46Bruzzone says that these caves have been theorized for over 50 years, but this is the first time
00:50ever they have seen them first hand.
00:52Unfortunately this area is not a high priority to land astronauts, but if there is a lava
00:57tube here, it means we might find them elsewhere too.
01:00And now astronomers have the techniques with which to do so, meaning a moon base is ever
01:04closer within our grasp.
