00:00If you feel it, chase it!
00:02Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:04And today, we're looking at moments where Glenn Powell left us saying,
00:07now there's a movie star with an affectionate nod.
00:10Feel the rain on your skin, no one else can feel it for you.
00:16Number 10.
00:17His cinematic debut.
00:18What was the first movie you saw Glenn Powell in?
00:21You might say Hidden Figures, where he portrayed astronaut John Glenn,
00:25or in the 80s throwback Everybody Wants Some.
00:27But no.
00:28You get a bunch of competitors together, and you're addicted to winning.
00:32Your introduction to Powell was actually a 2003 blockbuster
00:36you didn't even realize he was in.
00:38This is the arena of misfortune.
00:39If you want to get to level two, you're gonna have to battle a mech.
00:42Spy Kids 3D featured big names like Sylvester Stallone
00:46and established child stars like Daryl Sabera.
00:48Powell was waiting in the wings as long-fingered boy,
00:51whose fingers aren't that long.
00:52Just go out there in your battle mech and fight.
00:56His screen time isn't long either.
00:58But Powell immediately showcased a pizzazz that hungers for more.
01:01Thankfully, it wasn't game over for his career.
01:04As far as Powell has come, he reflects on the Spy Kids shoot as, quote,
01:07one of the best days of his whole life.
01:10Don't get too trashed, and I win bonus points.
01:12Number 9.
01:13His solo audition.
01:15Several rising stars were in the running for Han Solo in the 2018 prequel,
01:19including Glenn Powell.
01:20Like, I auditioned for, like, the Han Solo movie back in the day.
01:23You did?
01:25Yeah.
01:25Ironically, Powell previously auditioned for Cowboys and Aliens to play Harrison Ford's son,
01:30which ultimately didn't pan out.
01:32Likewise, the solo role went to Alden Ehrenreich.
01:34But Powell walked away with a funny story.
01:37Since much of the film centers on Han forming a bond with Chewbacca,
01:40the filmmakers had to see how convincingly each actor worked off a Wookie.
01:44Powell didn't get to read lines with Chewie.
01:46Instead, the casting director had a button that made a dog sound effect.
01:50You don't look cool in audition by any means.
01:52While Powell came close to piloting the Millennium Falcon,
01:55he blew his final audition.
01:57Fittingly enough, Powell would get a Han Solo moment in Top Gun Maverick.
02:01Hey, hangman.
02:03You look good.
02:04I am good, rooster.
02:06I'm very good.
02:07Number 8.
02:08A king among Scream Queens.
02:11Scream Queens only lasted two seasons,
02:13but it spotlighted several young stars on the cusp of stardom.
02:16Among them was Powell as Chad Radwell, whose name speaks for itself.
02:20Look, Chanel, I'm a psychology major,
02:23so I'm gonna break this down into terms that you'll understand.
02:26Chad merges the toxicity of fraternities and the elitism of golf
02:30into one preppy package.
02:31Yet we can't help but love Chad.
02:33His self-entitlement is complemented by a witty self-awareness,
02:37distinguishing Chad from the stock jocks we see in other college comedies.
02:41I'm Chad Radwell, and I always win, no matter what.
02:46While the writers clearly have fun crafting his dialogue,
02:48Powell infuses the character with a charisma that makes him hard to hate,
02:52even at his worst.
02:53His best scenes are with Emma Roberts' Chanel,
02:56who Chad isn't above cheating on.
02:58Of course, Chanel's no angel either.
03:00In a warped way, they deserve each other.
03:02Wait, what?
03:04I'm sorry, Chanel, that's just how the Radwells roll.
03:06We make our beds and we line them.
03:10We line them with our creepy neck brace scoliosis wives.
03:15Number 7.
03:16Turning the capybara into a meme.
03:18What's your favorite animal?
03:19It's a generic question that usually comes with a generic answer like dog or cat.
03:24Glenn Powell has a unique answer for an interesting reason, however.
03:31Despite appearing in Hidden Figures,
03:32Powell claims he, quote,
03:34basically didn't get invited to the premiere.
03:36He showed up regardless, happy to just be there.
03:38Maybe a little too happy, as somebody tweeted that Powell, quote,
03:42looks like a capybara who made a wish to become human.
03:45It wasn't long until the photo became a meme.
03:47Explain the story behind this great photo.
03:50Powell embraced his resemblance to the South American rodent,
03:53joking about it in various interviews.
03:55But this is why the internet's a great place.
03:57At this rate, we wouldn't be surprised if a studio greenlit a CG animated movie
04:01where Powell voices a capybara.
04:03You heard it here first.
04:05Number 6.
04:06Being deemed expendable by security.
04:08Spy Kids 3D wasn't the last movie that united Glenn Powell and Sylvester Stallone.
04:13You know what?
04:14I'm gonna come right on stage.
04:15The Expendables franchise has assembled an assortment of old-school action stars.
04:19In the third film, Powell injected new blood as the tech-savvy Thorn.
04:23In a cast featuring Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger,
04:26and Harrison Ford, among others, Powell stood out as a fresh face.
04:31Do you mind?
04:34This is the least of your worries.
04:35So fresh that a bouncer at the Cannes Film Festival didn't recognize him.
04:39It actually got kind of physical.
04:41Powell attended the festival to promote the film with several co-stars.
04:44The bouncer apparently didn't know what Powell was doing in the VIP section,
04:48making him leave with physical force.
04:50A decade later, Powell is able to laugh about it,
04:53especially since the bouncer would probably recognize him now.
04:56Are you sure you can do this, Thorn?
04:58I can do it, I can do it.
04:59Number 5.
05:00Getting encouragement from Denzel Washington.
05:02By the time he was a high school senior,
05:04Powell had already booked a few small roles in movies and TV shows.
05:08Powell was still contemplating his future when he was cast in 2007's The Great Debaters.
05:13Nonviolence is the mask civil disobedience wears to conceal its true face.
05:18Director and star Denzel Washington would help cement Powell's career path.
05:22Although Powell didn't have the largest role as a Harvard debater,
05:25Washington recognized his potential.
05:27Wow, look at that guy. A long time ago.
05:30He even introduced Powell to his agent, Ed Lomato.
05:33During Powell's freshman year at the University of Texas,
05:36Washington and Lomato convinced him to pursue acting full-time in LA.
05:40Lomato passed away in 2010, but his instincts about Powell proved correct.
05:44The same goes for Washington, who hasn't hesitated to remind Powell that he owes him.
05:49But Denzel really gave me the confidence. He said he got it and, like, and do it.
05:53So, um, I'm really glad I took that advice, yeah.
05:55Number 4.
05:56Reaching new heights as Hangman.
05:59Powell's career so far can be divided into two eras, before and after Top Gun Maverick.
06:04If it ain't Phoenix.
06:07Here I thought we were special, Coyote.
06:09He originally auditioned to play Goose's son Rooster,
06:11competing against Austin Butler, Nicholas Holt, and Miles Teller.
06:15That role naturally went to Teller,
06:17but Powell was offered another part as Rooster's rival Hangman.
06:20There's more than one way to fly this mission.
06:23You really don't get it.
06:26On this mission, a man flies like Maverick here, or a man does not come back.
06:32No offense intended.
06:33Powell initially hesitated to play such an unlikable character,
06:37describing him as Navy Draco Malfoy.
06:40However, Tom Cruise wanted to work with Powell to flesh out the character.
06:43The producers took Powell's input to heart,
06:45expanding Hangman's role and giving him more of an arc.
06:49What happened?
06:50Well, I flew as fast as I could.
06:52Kind of like my ass depended on it.
06:54While he mirrors Iceman to an extent,
06:56Hangman's evolution throws a few curveballs that leave you rooting for him by the climax.
07:00It was the moment Powell officially skyrocketed to A-tier.
07:04You give him hell!
07:06Number 3.
07:07Wrangling Twisters
07:09After Top Gun Maverick broke records,
07:11Powell seemingly became the go-to guy for legacy sequels.
07:14In Twisters, he was upgraded to co-lead with Daisy Edgar-Jones.
07:18Oh, she's perfect!
07:20She's gorgeous!
07:22Like its 1996 predecessor,
07:24this disaster film primarily succeeds thanks to the chemistry between its leads.
07:28Edgar-Jones and Powell don't nearly feel like stand-ins for Helen Hunt
07:31and the late Bill Paxton.
07:32Powell, in particular, brings his signature energy to the role of Tyler Owens,
07:36a storm chaser who's smarter and more sentimental than he looks.
07:40You don't face your fears.
07:47You ride them.
07:48It's been argued recently that social media stars have killed the movie star.
07:52Powell is the counter-argument.
07:54In Twisters, Powell proves once and for all that he's a certified movie star,
07:58ironically playing a character who has a YouTube channel.
08:01Is that it?
08:03Nope.
08:03Number 2.
08:04His chemistry with Sidney Sweeney.
08:06In 2022, Powell presented an MTV Movie and TV Award to Sidney Sweeney.
08:11They didn't get a chance to talk,
08:12but Sweeney thought Powell might be a good fit for a movie she was getting off the ground.
08:16Let's just get through tonight for them, okay?
08:18Hell, she's your sister.
08:19I'm sure the relationship won't last long.
08:21She's your friend.
08:22I question why they're even together.
08:24Then I'm gonna get a drink and toast to never seeing you again.
08:27Cheers to that, bro.
08:29Casting can make or break a film like anyone but you.
08:32On paper, you can dissect why Bea and Ben aren't exactly the healthiest romantic pairing.
08:37When you have Sweeney and Powell as the leads, though, it's hard not to be won over.
08:41Gonna do the line?
08:44That's king of the world.
08:45You're king of the world.
08:49Jack, I'm flying!
08:51Okay, we can stop there.
08:52This modern Shakespearean romantic comedy became 2023's sleeper hit,
08:56with its success extending well into 2024.
08:59The chemistry between Powell and Sweeney hasn't been limited to the film, either.
09:03I gave her an award at the People's Choice Awards.
09:06MTV Awards.
09:10From interviews to SNL, these two are bringing back the movie star and the rom-com.

09:34Number 1.
09:35Hitting a bullseye as a hitman.
09:38No film thus far has provided a better showcase for Powell's range
09:41than Richard Linklater's Hitman.
09:43Congrats, Gary.
09:44You just got promoted to contract killer.
09:50Well, when do you reschedule?
09:53He's not even here yet.
09:54Loosely based on a real person,
09:56Powell is not only convincing as modest college professor Gary Johnson,
09:59but also the revolving door of hitman personas he adopts while working undercover.
10:04So, how are you?
10:08I'm fine.
10:09I'm fine.
10:09As over-the-top as the premise sounds, Powell keeps the film surprisingly grounded.
10:14His chemistry with co-star Adria Arjona also knows no end.
10:18So we agree to the terms.
10:19What do I say?
10:20Powell co-wrote the screenplay, further demonstrating his knack for crafting characters.
10:25Where many actors accept whatever high-profile role comes their way,
10:28we're glad that Powell has been more selective,
10:31pursuing projects he's passionate about and helping to make each one better.
10:34Hitman is Powell's best piece of pie yet, and all pie is good pie.
10:41Would you describe Glenn Powell as a movie star?
10:43Let us know in the comments.
10:45This was just me just joking around with brisket.
10:47Do you agree with our picks?
