00:00I can't believe summer's almost over.
00:05We'll be back in school before you know it.
00:09At least someone's excited.
00:11Dear Tim and Moby, school starts soon and I'm feeling nervous.
00:16Do you guys have any tips to make things easier?
00:19From Nicole.
00:20Hey, Nicole.
00:22It's completely normal to feel nervous about going back to school, or to have other big
00:27feelings like excitement or fear.
00:30There are so many new things to get used to.
00:35New teachers, new classmates, and sometimes a whole new school.
00:42Plus the last few school years have been full of changes and interruptions.
00:47So it makes sense that you might be feeling stressed out.
00:50You might even get headaches or butterflies in your stomach.
00:56It's just a saying, Moby.
00:58I mean that tingly feeling you get when you're nervous or scared.
01:02It usually disappears once you're settled in.
01:05It may take time to adjust, so be patient with yourself as you ease back in.
01:11For a lot of kids, including me, the first day is the most nerve-wracking.
01:16To make it as smooth as possible, do your prep before school starts.
01:21Review your schedule so you know what to expect.
01:24Then make a day one plan.
01:26Decide when you'll wake up, what you'll eat for breakfast, what you'll bring, and how
01:30you'll get to school.
01:32Plan to do something calming the night before, like listening to music.
01:36And open up to friends and family about how you're doing.
01:39Share what you're looking forward to, and what you're nervous about.
01:43Naming your emotions can make them less overwhelming.
01:47Yeah, I'm curious about my new teachers, too.
01:51You may be wondering if yours will be really strict, or give you more homework than you're
01:56used to.
01:57But just remember, your teachers are there to help you.
02:00They want learning to be fun and interesting, just like you do.
02:05Set yourself up for success by paying attention in class, and asking questions when you don't
02:10understand something.
02:12It can also help to adopt a growth mindset.
02:15That's the belief that with practice and hard work, you can get better.
02:19Being blank during tests or struggling in math aren't, like, permanent parts of who
02:24you are.
02:25When you find yourself thinking, I can't, or I don't, try adding the word yet.
02:32So I don't understand variables becomes, I don't understand variables yet.
02:38When you're ready to do your homework, get organized.
02:41If you can, set up a quiet, comfortable spot, just for work.
02:45Store all your supplies there, so you won't go looking for them and get distracted.
02:49Then, when you sit down, your mind will go right into learning mode, cause that's where
02:53you do your work.
02:55You may not have the perfect study space, or you might have to share, and that's okay.
02:59Get creative, and set things up so you can get your work done.
03:03Yeah, it's always great to see old friends after the summer.
03:07But keep your mind open to new friends, too.
03:10Especially kids who are new to your school, and could use a friendly face.
03:15Who you hang out with may shift from grade to grade.
03:18And meeting new people is one of the best parts about going to school.
03:22Joining teams and clubs is one good way to connect with new friends.
03:26Plus, you'll get to explore your interests.
03:29I joined the Lego club last semester.
03:32And the TaeKwonDo club.
03:33Oh, and the Edwardian cosplay club.
03:36Right, you want to stay open to getting involved, but be sure to reflect on how it's going.
03:41If it's too much, you can always pull back.
03:44A big transition, like a new school year, is a great time for self-care.
03:49That means eating balanced meals, exercising, getting enough sleep, and doing stuff you
03:54enjoy.
03:56If you're stressed or anxious, try recording your thoughts in a journal, or talking it
04:01out with a friend.
04:02It can help to do some deep breathing, or even meditation.
04:06Our mindfulness movie has tips.
04:08And if you need extra support, you can talk to your school counselor or another trusted
04:12adult.
04:13I'm not wearing my cruise wear on the first day of school.
04:17I think I'll go with something more me.
04:20Maybe a white t-shirt with a cool quirky icon on the front.
04:25That's the ticket.
04:26You know, I think I'm finally over this summer thing.
04:30I'm sick of sleeping in late and having all this free time.
04:35Shh, I'm trying to trick myself.
