00:00Darren Palmer, Ross Arman, Terry Spirides in the second Ferrari. We go back to King, Trimble and Linton.
00:07Yeah, great mix of cars. They're different classes in the GTP ranks. Simpson and Kenny, Thorne and Toulon.
00:13The Nissan Skyline GT-R doing well. Cohen there too. Gardner at the Mazda 626. He was very strong in the class battle yesterday.
00:20Well, we're going to be joined by Grant Kenny shortly. He's decided not to run in this one and we'll talk to the former Ironman champion in just a few moments.
00:29Davis Cowley, Jackson, McGill. We're getting back to the smaller cars now in the class E category.
00:34Williams, Hughes, Dean and Canto. Now, you can take Canto out of that in the Maserati Ghibli.
00:39He has been excluded from the meeting having irregularities and problems with their turbo boost and it went beyond the regulations.
00:47So, the young Sydney sider is out of this one. So, bad luck for him. He was going all right yesterday.
00:51He got caught up in a bit of trouble, but here's another young driver excited about his drive in a Ferrari.
00:55Young Darren Palmer. It's where he gets set to go. The Courier Mail. GT production cars.
01:00Ten laps away we go. Jim Richards got away to a good start. So tuned into Ferrari of Palmer.
01:05Looking for a way through young Darren Palmer, but it's Jim Richards and Rodney Forbes.
01:09Now, Forbes would have and should have the inside line for the first chicane.
01:13We'll see how they end up. Oh, Ross Armand has gone sideways through the first chicane. Mayhem, but he's all right.
01:20Yeah, we see so often of that first chicane. Everyone under brakes charging off that line.
01:24Everyone's pumped up. Tyres are cold. Brakes are cold. They're coming flying in there.
01:28It's so often we see a bit of a drama. Fortunately, not too much damage.
01:32Oh, Grant Kenny does join us now in commentary. That was an anxious start there, Grant.
01:36Yeah, it was pretty interesting, wasn't it? Ross Armand yesterday was so pumped up after coming fourth.
01:40I think he just went out a little hard there and a little bit excited.
01:43How tough is that first chicane? How tight is it?
01:46It's quite tight. I think one of the things about it is, particularly after the start,
01:49is that it's a bit of chaos and so many cars around, you can't take your normal line through the corner
01:54and there's a lot of push and shove going on.
01:58Ross Armand went in very, very deep with a Palmer Ferrari.
02:02Nearly took out Forbes too as he went through the chicane. He ran straight over the top of it.
02:05Jimmie Richards went down the escape road and went straight on.
02:07Well, he had nowhere to go. He turned in. Here we go now from the replay.
02:11Look at Armand right up behind the Porsche. He actually hits Jim Richards, loses him.
02:15Palmer's inside wheel. It was locked up. He was going way too fast.
02:18And Forbes, how close was that?
02:20Good work by Rodney Forbes actually.
02:22Ah, Darren Palmer as well. The two guys off the second row. Bit of a head swell, I think.
02:26Jimmie Richards was the big winner though. Straight to the lead.
02:29Avoided contact except when he got nudged by Ross Armand. He leads the way from Rodney Forbes.
02:33Then we go back. It still looks like Palmer in the Ferrari F355.
02:38Well, Jimmie Richards the winner yesterday. A tremendous battle between himself and Rodney Forbes.
02:43And Rodney Forbes just managed to tip him on the line.
02:46Rodney was the fastest man in qualifying.
02:48We saw a tremendous battle amongst these two for the full 12 laps.
02:52Richards was leading on that last lap. Rodney Forbes did an absolute blinding move.
02:56Half a lap to go and won the race. It was sensational.
02:59But look how close they are now, continuing that qualifying form throughout Race 1 and here this morning in Race 2.
03:04Well, Grant, you've competed here at Service Paradise lots of times but not in a motor car.
03:08How was it yesterday? You did pretty well. I think you got second or third in your class?
03:11Yeah, third in class and tenth outright. Jimmie Richards got a stop go for that start incident.
03:16But I must say, I don't think he had a lot of options. I think that was a bit rough on him.
03:19That is a bit tough. He was trying to avoid all the carnage.
03:22Went down the escape road. We saw drivers doing that yesterday but they didn't get pinged.
03:26Richards is confident. There's that damage in the rear bumper from Armand's spin.
03:31So Rich will go down to the penalty box.
03:33He's actually pulling into his pit. I think he may have a problem there.
03:37It was quite possible, I guess, after that nudge that he got.
03:39No, he's off again now. So I guess it was a stop go.
03:43I know he's done both. He's gone to pits.
03:47What was going on there?
03:48He's a long way back now. He'll have to come through the maze.
03:53Now, here's your cut out. Is Scott Jacobs in that car?
03:56Yeah, Scott's driving. Unfortunately, I had a couple of commitments this morning
03:59which meant that I couldn't get back to be gridded up in time.
04:02And one of the things I guess that people don't realise about this circuit is that the logistics is unbelievable.
04:08We're actually down at Marina Mirage and we're in the cars almost an hour before the race start.
04:12And I couldn't make that. So Scott's got to drive first time on the track here at surface
04:17and had to start from the back of the grid. So he seems to be doing alright so far.
04:22Robney Forbes. Bob Forbes' son. Former touring car great.
04:27Now doing a great job in this Porsche with Jimmy Richards out of the way.
04:29He's opened it up 2.5 seconds to lead over Darren Palmer in the Ferrari.
04:34He's on the leaderboard there. Perry Spirides in third.
04:36Vernon Richards. He's gone down the order. He's got a lot of work to do.
04:41Well, this is great for Perry Spirides in third spot in the second of the Ferraris
04:44because first qualifying it was 20th. Started yesterday's race 20th.
04:49Worked his way through the field and now he's been rewarded.
04:53Running in the top three. Had a bit of a tough run yesterday
04:55but things going well now for the buy-ride Ferrari.
04:57He got a stop-go penalty yesterday too and apparently for hopping over the kerb.
05:02He's had a lot better run today behind Darren Palmer in the Ferrari fragrance-sponsored car.
05:08Don't they sound superb to you, Murph?
05:10Best-sounding car out there. Super-sounding.
05:12Especially echoing off these walls around Surfers Paradise. They really are good.
05:163.5-litre quad-cam LOV8 with a six-speed transmission.
05:20They're producing about 380 brake horsepower and they rev to something like 8,000 RPM.
05:25It's phenomenal for a road car and they're very impressive in race trim as well.
05:29This category is something new for you at home.
05:31It's probably the most popular category in Australian motor racing at the moment.
05:35There are competitors coming from everywhere.
05:38Five different categories, A through to E plus A, B, C, D.
05:41They also have a sports car category as well.
05:44It goes on the various capacities of the car.
05:47Obviously these front-runners are in Class A.
05:49Now Grant Kenny joining us this morning.
05:52He's been running in a Subaru Impreza WRX in Class V.
05:56It is a fantastic category, Grant.
05:58It is. We've just had a tremendous amount of fun.
06:01Being out there and mixing it with these sort of guys really is a great experience.
06:07Jim Richards, he's got a problem for sure. He's coming back into the pits.
06:10That car is not running right.
06:12The hit that he got at the start line from Ross Arman didn't look like much of a touch.
06:16I think he's got some other problem with the car.
06:19Obviously he's not very happy with it.
06:21It's a shame.
06:22There's only a small dent on the back bumper so that can't be the reason.
06:25He had a great run yesterday. This is the debut.
06:27Well, yesterday was the race debut for this car.
06:30New Porsche 911 RS CS for Jimmie Richards.
06:33And it ran like a clock yesterday afternoon in that great battle with Rodney Forbes.
06:37Now he's really got a problem bringing it into pit lane.
06:39That's a great shame for Richo. He's looking forward to a big run here this morning.
06:43The guy on the left-hand side there just opening the door, that's Martin Klein.
06:46He's actually a fireman from Melbourne.
06:48He actually rebuilt that car, totally rebuilt that car.
06:50It was totaled at Target Tasmania from some previous owners.
06:54And they bought the car, they got the car.
06:56Martin totally rebuilt it for this meeting for Jim.
06:58Unfortunately things aren't going right.
07:00Didn't go right for him yesterday either when he was running second.
07:02He was in the lead and Rodney Forbes snatched the lead back.
07:05But 31-year-old Sydneysider, here he is.
07:07Rodney Forbes doing a great job.
07:09No challenge from the two Ferraris so everything goes right.
07:12He should do this one quite easily.
07:14Here is the Class B leader, Mark King, the Mitsubishi Evo III.
07:19He really does have that car wound up too.
07:21He was doing some fantastic times yesterday.
07:23Had a bit of bad luck down at Sandown, did the engine there.
07:26But he's really giving it some now.
07:30Now of course there was a one-hour endurance race at the Tickford 500 at Sandown.
07:34There will also be a three-hour endurance race at the FAI 1000 Classic at Bathurst on November 14 and 15.
07:40We'll see you in that one.
07:42Yeah, we will actually.
07:43We've now got Autobahn on board and Kenwood who are helping us out as well as Falcon with tyres.
07:49So now that we're starting to build the budget up a little bit, we've got enough at least to get down there.
07:54So far it's been a bit of a hard road.
07:56But really looking forward to Bathurst.
07:58I know it's a very daunting track but it's very exciting.
08:01Something I'm really looking forward to.
08:02So how long before we see the Grant Kenney two-car V8 supercar team at Bathurst?
08:06Well, we're working on it.
08:07But I think once Grant Kenney learns how to drive a bit better then we'll go from there.
08:11But I've been pretty happy so far.
08:13One of the things I like to be able to do is to get to know a track a little bit quicker.
08:17I guess that all comes with experience obviously.
08:19And at this stage for me it's been, you know, I'm fairly slow to start with.
08:23But I wind up by the time it comes race day I've been reasonably competitive.
08:27So I just want to get that wide a little bit better first.
08:30Here's a good battle with the smaller capacity cars.
08:32These are the Class E cars, the Suzuki Swift GTIs.
08:35And it is Williams and McGill.
08:37Now, Murph, we saw Aaron McGill have a good win yesterday.
08:40But he's got his work cut out for him here with Nigel Williams.
08:43These cars are so close, these little Suzuki Swifts.
08:45And the rules obviously limit them to what they can do with these cars.
08:50And these guys are having a great fun out there on the circuit,
08:53which is a pretty daunting circuit, as Graham was saying before.
08:56But they're doing a great job.
08:58There's a weaving going on there, trying to break the slipstream.
09:01He's all over the place.
09:02A lot of horsepower to play with there.
09:04Yeah, I wouldn't be doing that. It's a waste of straight line speed.
09:06Oh, McGill's going to get him.
09:07Yeah, McGill's got the outside.
09:09More speed.
09:10Oh, he'll get another turn here, he says.
09:13Exciting coming under brakes down to the first chicane.
09:16Great little cars.
09:17Interesting tactic, Suzuki GTIs.
09:20Only 835 kilograms.
09:22A bit of a five-stick run, I wouldn't take up that tactic.
09:24You do your own thing.
09:261.3-litre, four-cylinder engine,
09:29producing a small amount of power, about 74 kilowatts.
09:33They have been absolutely dominant in Class E.
09:36Oh, McGill, that's a good move up the inside.
09:38Got a little bit of a tow coming out of there.
09:40He's got a bit of drive out of the turn.
09:42And covering himself down under brakes into A and A corner.
09:47Good little battle going on.
09:48It's a shame.
09:49A couple of years ago, we saw a Suzuki GTI Cup
09:51or a Suzuki GTI Patrol Series
09:53with everyone running in these cars.
09:54They ended up with a field of 35 or 40 cars,
09:56and it was just like this.
09:58Plenty of biffo.
09:59Everyone running side-by-side, mirrors coming off,
10:01bumpers getting bent.
10:02It was fabulous racing.
10:04It's an interesting situation to be in, in this category too,
10:07because for us in Class B, after about 10 laps,
10:10we're starting to get lapped by the Ferraris and Porsches.
10:13And I jumped out yesterday behind a Ferrari
10:16to get a little bit of a ride down the straight,
10:18but I tell you what, the Subaru is a great car,
10:20but it's no match in horsepower.
10:22You needed a grappling hook or something like that.
10:24That's right.
10:25I nearly reached out the window.
10:26Throw it out and grab on.
10:27You say that's probably the strength of this category, Grant,
10:30is that when you're out there in a Subaru,
10:32you're out there mixing it
10:33with the likes of Rodney Forbes and Jimmy Richards.
10:35It really is good fun.
10:37As we battle on through,
10:38this is the Courier Mail GT production car race,
10:41and Rodney Forbes is your race leader from Palmer Spiridis.
10:44Culin and King, Mark King, the first Class B car,
10:47and he's in the top five.
10:48He's doing a great job.
10:49Beric Linton leads the sports car category
10:51from Thorne, Cohen, Scott Jacob and David Ratcliffe.
10:55Have a look back.
10:5611 through 15, Chris Sexton, Davis, Gardner, Jackson and Simpson.
11:00More of the GTPs right after this.
11:06Welcome back to the 98 Honda Indy.
11:08This is GT production car time,
11:10and this is your race leader, Rodney Forbes,
11:12the Sydney sign-up in the Scuderia Veloce Motors.
11:15Porsche 911 RS CS.
11:17He's doing a great job.
11:18He really battled hard with one of the greatest names
11:21in Australian motorsport yesterday,
11:23but unfortunately, that guy is sitting on the sidelines now.
11:26It's Jimmy Richards, and he's with Barry Sheen.
11:28Jimmy, never a dull moment? What happened?
11:30No, well, it's the start of the race.
11:32We all got off to a pretty good start,
11:34despite Mr Bishi, just as we put the brakes on,
11:36ran to the back of me quite hard
11:38and actually pushed me through the chicane.
11:40And I think the clerk of the course,
11:42without going for the replay,
11:44just thought that I'd driven through it for no reason.
11:46He should have maybe waited a lap
11:47and had a look at the fact that I was actually pushed through it,
11:50and maybe the race could have continued.
11:52But we'd damaged the exhaust pipe in the accident,
11:54so we really, you know, that's why we've stopped,
11:56because the exhaust pipe's dislodged
11:57and it's blowing hot air under the back of the car.
12:00Thanks a lot, Jimmy. Pleasure.
12:01I'll have to agree with Jimmy there.
12:03It's not his fault that he went through the escape road.
12:05Well, the exhaust in the Porsche is actually right behind the bumper.
12:07It sits in the bumper, so that's right.
12:09Also, if it is rubbing on the exhaust, it can get hot
12:11and it could catch fire,
12:13so Jimmy obviously realised that.
12:15But, yeah, I agree with you.
12:16He was pretty harshly done by there.
12:18He didn't deserve to have a black flag for that.
12:20Second-place man, Darren Palmer in the Ferrari.
12:24He's some 8.1 seconds behind our race leader, Rodney Forbes.
12:30And Perry Spirides in third, some 13 seconds back behind this man.
12:33So, as we saw yesterday, apart from that battle for the lead,
12:36the field becoming quite spaced out around this long circuit.
12:39He's a young guy who's done quite a bit of racing.
12:41He's just returned from the USA,
12:43where he spends a bit of time with just three laps left to run.
12:46He's been running in a category called the Formula Mazda Series over there.
12:50He's come back to Australia and jumped in the Ferrari F355.
12:54Here's the second of those cars, Perry Spirides,
12:57who was pinged yesterday for excessively jumping the curves,
13:00but he's kept it all pretty on line today,
13:03and he's running third outright and third in Class A as well.
13:09Yeah, Perry was looking to have a run in the car at the three-hour,
13:13or the one-hour, I should say, stand-out of the Tickford 500 support race.
13:18So, the Ferrari getting plenty of work in the GTP Series this year.
13:23Two of them running,
13:24and they've certainly built a very strong fan base,
13:27very enthusiastic about the Prancing Horse.
13:33These guys were running pretty hard yesterday, too.
13:35It's interesting, once again, from being in a slower car,
13:38having the opportunity to see quite quick cars coming through from the mirrors,
13:42you're always watching,
13:43but then to jump in behind them through some of the corners,
13:46and it's interesting to note that some of the Class B cars in particular,
13:50even Class C cars, are almost as quick through some of the tighter turns,
13:54but, of course, really lacking horsepower on the run out.
13:57That's what I was getting to earlier, Grant,
13:59saying that you're in Class B, a Subaru,
14:03and in all due respect, a relatively inexperienced driver,
14:06but you can get out here and have a go and mix it with these guys,
14:09but you're not racing against them overall,
14:11you're racing in your own separate categories,
14:12and I think that's one of the strengths.
14:14Yeah, it is a tremendous category,
14:15because it's also relatively inexpensive,
14:17and when I say relatively, I mean it's the key word there,
14:21relative to supercars, V8s, you know,
14:24but it is a chance to get out there and race,
14:26so the cars within class can be very competitive,
14:29and even if it's not a car in your class,
14:32because of the control situation,
14:35there's very limited opportunity to do anything with the car,
14:38so really what you buy is what you've got to race with in many ways,
14:42and it's sometimes affected by the availability of tyres for that particular car,
14:46so you may have the horsepower on somebody,
14:49but if that particular car came out with a narrower tyre or a higher profile,
14:53then you're really limited to what's available on the market,
14:56so it becomes very difficult to sort of compare apples with apples,
14:59even within the class,
15:00but at the same time, the racing can be very, very tight,
15:03you know, particularly in yesterday's race,
15:05I think it was a lot tighter than what it's stretched out to be today,
15:08and, you know, with the requirement to run the same tyres
15:12that you qualified on through the two races as well,
15:15probably seeing a little bit of performance difference there too
15:18between the different tyre manufacturers.
15:20Carol Jackson in the Honda Civic, running second in class, D.
15:24Kelvin Gardner, who you got a quick shot of before in the Master 626,
15:27is the leader of that class.
15:29Here's Carol, currently 14th out right, doing a good job too.
15:32Heading for the pits too, she's got some sort of problem,
15:35the car looked OK, no smoke coming from it,
15:38but unless she got a stop-go penalty, which I don't think she did,
15:42Heading for the pits this time, with only two laps to run too,
15:46so that's disappointing.
15:47Here's Rodney Forth leading the race, light to blaze.
15:50He's had a fairly uneventful race there by himself,
15:53unlike yesterday with him and Jim Richards battling it out,
15:56but Rodney's done a great job, as I said yesterday,
15:58really impressed with the way this young guy's driven.
16:01I mean, he hasn't had the experience of some of the other drivers out there,
16:04and he's done a super job.
16:06Well, he has had a taste of V8 supercars, hasn't he, Greg?
16:09He put a deal together with Glenn Seaton to run the second Ford credit car,
16:12it didn't really come off,
16:14but I'm sure that he'll be back aboard a Holton or a Ford supercar before too long.
16:19Well, he's picked the right car to be racing at the front here,
16:22the Porsche, usually a very reliable car,
16:24obviously Jim Richards has had a problem with his,
16:26but that was due to an incident,
16:28and this car, a really nice car to drive, it stops superbly,
16:31it handles very well, engineered to perfection,
16:34and they just keep going all day long,
16:36and he's doing a great job out front.
16:38This category represents a great stepping stone for drivers like Rodney Forbes,
16:42who was the 1997 New South Wales Formula Ford champ,
16:45he won the Formula Ford race at last year's Bathurst,
16:50so whether they want to go straight to V8s or whatever they want to do,
16:54this category provides that stepping stone,
16:56sort of that middle ground, which is great.
16:58Yeah, well, Formula Ford teaches so much about racing,
17:01the race craft, as we call it,
17:04it's such a competitive class to learn all the skills that's required,
17:08and then getting into something like this,
17:10if he's interested in getting into V8 supercars,
17:12GT production is a similar form of touring car racing,
17:17and this teaches him all about tintops,
17:19and so he's doing the right thing.
17:21Rodney Forbes on his last lap now,
17:23and he's really winding it back to a 2.10.58 he just did last time around,
17:26the gap between himself and Darren Palmer,
17:28dropping down to just over five seconds,
17:30it was down to eight or nine seconds at one stage,
17:32so Rodney's going to cruise it home.
17:35He's done a good job too.
17:37So, Grant, looking forward to the FIA 1000 Classic?
17:39Absolutely, yes, I think it's going to be a very interesting week.
17:42I've certainly enjoyed my time here at Indy,
17:44but I know that the Bathurst circuit is something really to excite yourself.
17:49Have you been up there and driven around there yet?
17:51I've, about 15 years ago, did one lap around there at the speed limit, of course.
17:55Things have changed.
17:56Yes.
17:57I do intend to go down there and spend a bit of time around the circuit
18:00prior to it being set up, just to become familiar with it,
18:02and I think that that's the least I could do at this stage.
18:05The rest of it's going to be pretty daunting at that time.
18:07Just watch out for the cars with the blue lights.
18:09Oh, yes.
18:10Here's Darren Palmer, second outright in the Ferrari F355,
18:13the Ferrari Fragrance sponsored car,
18:16doing a good job, the 23-year-old Queenslander.
18:19He's a lot closer to Rodney Forbes than what he was yesterday,
18:22and he's managed to drop Perry Spirides off the back as well.
18:25Sure has.
18:26Spirides is almost half a minute behind this car,
18:2929 seconds last time around for the other Ferrari in the race.
18:33Son of Ross Palmer, of Palmer Tube Mills fame.
18:37I don't think he spent much time in the Ferrari either.
18:39In fact, I think this is his first race,
18:41so he's probably done a pretty good job there.
18:44This is Rodney Forbes.
18:45He's bringing it home, a couple of corners,
18:47then half the length of the main straight, and he's home.
18:49So it's been a very successful weekend for Rodney Forbes,
18:5231-year-old Sydneysider.
18:54He's come here in the GTP class,
18:56did a little bit of Porsche Cup racing earlier this year as well.
18:59Well, he couldn't have done better.
19:00He couldn't be in pole position in two race wins.
19:02You can't ask for more than that.
19:03I think it may be his first time here too,
19:05so his experience on the circuit is probably fairly limited.
19:07Finish time, checkered flag is out.
19:09Well done, Rodney Forbes.
19:10He wins the Courier Mail GT production car race here at 98 Honda Indy.
19:15Darren Palmer flashing across the line in the Ferrari 355.
19:18They're the top two in Class A.
19:21Now, currently, Mark King is still leading Class B.
19:24He'll be making his way to the line.
19:26But there's Rodney Forbes.
19:27Well done.
19:29A really good win.
19:31Now, currently, Grant Kenny, your car,
19:33with Scott Jacobs behind the wheel,
19:35is running second in class.
19:36Not bad.
19:37Yeah, he'd be pretty happy with that, I'm sure.
19:39And I was just noticing the time.
19:40He's got down to about a 2.23 or so, which is a great effort.
19:45I think the best we managed yesterday was almost 22 flat.
19:49But as I said earlier, Scott's never driven this circuit,
19:51so it does take a little while to get to know the track,
19:54particularly, I don't think it's the best situation
19:56to learn the track under race conditions.
19:58Perry Spiridi's coming across the line.
20:00He'll pick up third outright in the Ferrari 355.
20:03Now, just to get back on an earlier incident,
20:05that first corner incident, Ross Armand,
20:07he obviously pulled off straight after that incident,
20:10so he didn't continue and finish at the back of the pack
20:14with Jimmy Richards as well.
20:16Yeah, great class battle.
20:17King up there, Class B, Linton, Class S.
20:21Radcliffe, once again, dominant Class C in the V6 Camry,
20:26and Thorne in that Suzuki GTI.
20:30So a tremendous mix of cars and classes,
20:33as we always see in the GTP battle.
20:36Well, here's a pretty good battle.
20:37Ian Berwick-Linton making his way around that,
20:39as he will be.
20:40And Michael Simpson in the second BMW.
20:43He's sitting second in that sports car class.
20:47Jerry Linton too strong.
20:49Fair bit of paint traded between the BMWs yesterday.
20:51Actually, it was quite an interesting race.
20:53I was sitting right behind them, and it was very entertaining.
20:55Well, Michael Simpson's done a ton of laps around this Indy circuit.
20:58He's a former HQ racer who did very, very well in that category.
21:03Here is Mark King coming home in the Mitsubishi Evo III.
21:07He's been unstoppable in this category.
21:10A really, really quick competitor.
21:13And he won this category yesterday, and will do it again today.
21:18He had the World Rally Car Championship winning car.
21:22And the Evo III, Evo IV, Evo V,
21:24they continue the Mitsubishi World Rally Car program.
21:27And this is just an example of how quick this car,
21:30not only in the forests, but also on the tarmac.
21:32To do the roundup further back through the field,
21:34Calvin Gardner took out Class D,
21:36and it looked like Williams over Gillian E.
21:38But this is your top five on the McDonald's scoreboard.
21:40Rodney Forbes in for the win.
21:42Darren Palmer, Terry Spirides, John Tulen, and Mark King,
21:45as we thank Grant Kenney for coming on up.
21:47We'll be back right after this.
