Natural solution: why nature is our best water manager to tackle climate change

Climate change, pollution, and ever-growing demand are putting a huge strain on our water resources. But could the natural world help us? In this Crash Course, we explore how Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly being used to tackle floods, droughts, and water scarcity.

00:00The water cycle is under mounting pressure, but could the natural world hold the key?
00:12Nature-based solutions are increasingly used to improve water availability, quality and
00:17protection. Self-sustaining, they boost biodiversity by making room for rivers and restoring wetlands
00:24that reduce flood impacts and improve water quality. Reforestation and sustainable farming
00:30to help retain moisture and stabilize local climates. And in cities, green roofs, permeable
00:37pavements and urban wetlands improve air quality and storm water management.
00:43Countries like Belgium, Spain and Germany are investing heavily in nature-based solutions.
00:49The EU has also provided 600 million euros to 76 projects in 71 countries. For every
00:57euro invested in nature restoration, the return in social, economic and environmental benefits
01:05is higher. It seems then that working with nature rather than against it offers us the
01:10best chance of building a more sustainable water future.
